The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

Introduction

On a cold December day, Kyon arrives at school prepared for another outing with his fellow SOS Brigade members. However, much to his surprise, he discovers that almost everything has changed completely: Haruhi Suzumiya and Itsuki Koizumi are nowhere to be found; Mikuru Asahina does not recognize him at all; Yuki Nagato is a regular human; and Ryouko Asakura has mysteriously returned. Although he is no stranger to the supernatural, Kyon is disturbed by this odd turn of events and decides to investigate on his own. Finding himself to be the only person that is aware of the previous reality, Kyon is now faced with a difficult choice: to finally live the normal life he has always wanted, or uncover a way to turn back the hands of time and restore his chaotic yet familiar world. Honestly, this show was a roller coaster. It went from good to bad to amazing. About the story, there isn't much to say about season 1. every episode was pretty good, the cultural festival and the computer game episode being my favorite. Season 2 is where it starts going downhill. Even tho it was something unique, the Endless Eight arc was annoying. Seeing it the first and second time is okay, but eight times sucked. Having only one or two changes in each episode just wasn't enough, and kyon also didn't really take the situation seriously. Other than that, the rest was okay. One thing both seasons lacked is that there wasn't really much focus on some characters like Yuki. The movie basically changes that. Yuki was always an interesting character. Even tho she is a humanoid interface with…

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is the perfect cap-off to an already amazing series. If anyone has seen It’s a Wonderful Life, this movie almost feels like the anime version of that idea. The little spin is that instead of showing a world where someone was never born, we follow our main character as he becomes trapped in a reality where small changes have completely altered the world around him. Everything feels familiar, but different enough to be unsettling. It is the kind of premise that immediately pulls you in, especially after spending so much time with the SOS Brigade across the series. What makes this movie so powerful is how much it rewards anyone who has watched The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya from the beginning. So many pieces of the story connect back to Kyon’s past ad…

This movie is that really delicious cake you were promised after doing your chores. It's the reward you get after finishing two seasons, 8 god-awful episodes, and an unsatisfying 28th episode finale. The Disappearance of Harui Suzumiya is the oh-so perfect curtain call to the entire series. A masterful work of art and a heartwrenching plot that will leave you divided between two possible endings (I would have chosen the altered one). Of course, you're required to watch all two seasons before watching this one, since you'll be completely lost if you don't. For fans who finished both seasons, the movie does start pretty quickly. The prologue itself is like your typical Harui Suzumiya episode. I rarely give 10/10s but after investing so much time into the series, and after getting attached to…

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya felt like a reward for my patience after watching the first two seasons. The movie moves to a completely different level, both emotionally and in the way it delivers its message. What I loved most is the main idea of the film: strangeness can give life meaning. The calm, normal world shown in the movie felt empty. It made me realize that chaos, uncertainty, and even discomfort are not bad things—they are what make life feel real and meaningful. The emotions in this film are quiet but very strong. It doesn’t force sadness or drama. Instead, it slowly builds a feeling that stays with you. When the movie ended, I felt a strange mix of wonder and sadness, and I couldn’t fully explain why. For me, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is not just an ending. I…

THIS WAS ACTUALLY GOOD. The best part of the Haruhi Suzumiya franchise. If you've seen seasons one and two, you MUST give this a watch. Even if you hated the show (like me, I gave the two seasons a 5 and a 4), the movie is actually so good. The movie gives you everything that you wish the show had given you. Actual plot that goes somewhere, unexpected twists, emotional involvement, it's great. The movie is long but it's over SO fast. They do an amazing job at keeping you hooked. There wasn't a second of boredom in this film, and that's saying a lot considering how long it is. It's truly an amazing film, I'd recommend it in a heartbeat to anyone who has seen the show or to anyone willing to put themselves through the much worse show to get to the good stuff (this). Unfortunately, to watch…

An absolutely incredible anime. No matter how many times I watch it, I’m always deeply moved and amazed by the sheer quality of this movie. Every aspect—characters, music, story, and the finer details—are beautifully crafted and complement each other perfectly. The TV series itself is also fantastic and truly enriches the experience. To fully appreciate this masterpiece, I highly recommend watching the original series first—The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Season 1 and 2. Pay close attention to the story and characters as they develop. Then, watch this movie. You’re in for an extraordinary experience that’s truly unforgettable. I really enjoyed following the story development in this movie — even with a runtime of over 2 hours and 30 minutes, I never felt bored at all.

This movie is a rarity in media. There are a lot of stories where some fans would say "oh it gets good at the end, you just need to get through the first many hours to get to the good part". This movie is the one where it's true. The 2nd season is infamous for the 8 "Endless Eight" episodes and the anime seasons themselves have its weird 2009 rerelease episode order. Any other anime (including this before the movie released) would be absolutely ridiculed for what Endless Eight was. But, what are considered the 8 worst episodes of the 2nd season, are possibly the most important episodes for this movie. You have to be a certain type of weird to appreciate Endless Eight, me being one of them as the 8 episodes are a unique experience, but by keeping it up and watching all 3 hours, your appreci…

You know, I had my fair share of problems with The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, even though I think it's overall a solid anime. Too many experimental themes and plotlines, practically unnecessarily convoluted timeline/watch order, and I never really felt like it had that big WTF type of moment (except for the God Knows scene but that scene is kinda random honestly and isn't really relevant to the main story) that made it stand out. That is, until I watched The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. I'm not joking when I say it is worth to watch the entire 28 episodes of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya just for this movie. This movie has one of the most well thought-out and intriguing plot, with some fantastic plot twists that really sucks you into the story that constantly keeps me on the…

What to say about this masterpiece? Haruhi Suzumiya's film is incredible, I would even say that it is much better produced than the anime series, which is also very good. The theme of melancholy and nostalgia present for those who watch the anime nowadays also makes its presence felt in the film, in addition to the excellent development of the characters, especially Haruhi and Kyon. The animation is very well produced and in the same style present in Kyoto Animation's anime, especially in anime from the 2000s to the early 2010s. Anyway, what I can say is that I would recommend this film to anyone, but as long as you've watched it all seasons of Haruhi Suzumiya as you will understand the movie from the moment you watch both seasons of the Haruhi anime. For those who currently watch the seri…

Have you ever wondered why this series is called ‘The MELANCHOLY of Haruhi Suzumiya’? If you only watch the original two seasons of the anime, you may be left without an answer. It is this film-length sequel, Disappearance, which encapsulates that melancholia and is one of the best anime movies ever produced. This review will be spoiler free. Who is Erik Satie? You may or may not have heard the name, but you have certainly heard his work. The Trois Gymnopedies, a series of three piano compositions, are his most famous; they are also a major inspiration for modern ambient music. Many, however, associate Satie’s Trois Gymnopedies with the feeling of melancholy, or more specifically, the melancholy of modern life. So what does this have to do with Disappearance? Trois Gymnopedies features p…

I originally wanted to write a really long review discussing the entire show and how brilliant this movie is at addressing everything, but I don't really think it's needed, and I don't think anyone would really care lol. This is a retrosepective on the first two seasons, but only for the sole purpose of trying to explain why this movie is so special. It's important to note that I'm mostly talking about the story here, the music, animation, and voice acting are all 10/10 amazing. Season 1 is a bunch of fun slice of life and mini adventures with one amazing arc that is nearly perfect. It doesn't reach the peaks of monogatari series, but it combines themes and storytelling from it and others lns like bunny girl senpai into something really consistent and special that is a cut above the rest.…

I was honestly surprised by the fact that this was, at the time of writing, #219 on the LetterBoxd top 250. This was above Your Name, The Lion King, Truman Show, and many more amazing movies. But honestly, it deserves to be up here. In the first 2 seasons of this show, I gave it a 7/10 (3.5/10). Season 1 was alright Season 2 was great! Only half the season though, the other half was, um, Endless Eight :vomit: This movie? This movie was out of this world... I will get into why. First off, the world-building. This studio, Kyoto Animation, also made Clannad and Clannad After Story. Clannad was mid, but Clannad AS was amazing due to the fact that Clannad did all the world-building. The same goes here. The first two seasons were mid. But here the movie built upon all the world-building…

What an experience of a movie. And what a turn it made from season 2 of the TV series! I had given the second season a 4/10 and didn't even finish the last 5 episodes. After some months of cooling off, I managed to finish it (I still would only give it a 5/10) because I was curious about the sequel film and didn't want to watch it without the proper context. But having just watched it, and feeling very emotional (and puzzled but in a good way) about the ending, I give it a solid 9/10. It was very well made. Not only is the animation and music superior, but the deep philosophical tone given to the story made it quite captivating and engaging. Sometimes the 2nd season would make attempts at smart dialogue, but it mostly came off as pseudo intellectual, especially coming from Koizumi. The mov…

The Disappearance serves as a great conclusion to the epic saga that is Haruhi's story, so much that it to me stands out alone as one of the best anime films period, and perfect viewing along with the Winter season. This review comes after my second go-around with this movie - my first time being before I watched it's prequel 'The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya' and this time after I have caught up with the events of the show. For fans of the show, this is essential viewing as it thematically concludes the story and wraps up important character arcs established in the show. There are many references and overlaps with previous episodes which re-contextualizes those original events in new and interesting ways. You get to see the main character's world turned upside-down and try to grapple wi…

Score: 10/10 Best Girl: Haruhi of course! 100%! Rewatching this film was a delight. It hit all the marks I wanted to see perfectly. If you wish to watch the film: I’d definitely recommend the series first because it’s important for character development & it really pays off in this film. I found that the first time I saw it I was on the edge of my seat really wanting the character to succeed. Now I didn’t rewatch the series this time so there were a few references, etc and ties that I think would have been better after watching the series. Some time in the future I’ll have to rewatch both together again. Maybe next Christmas.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu Wow... I loved this movie so much, I actually didn't expect myself to like it until i binged the whole movie and then looked at the time and realised it was 2am lol. There isn't any spoilers in this review so read if you would like :) STORY The story is amazing! Im not spoiling anything so i cant really say much, but i in fact haven't even seen the series.. The movie was suggested by one of my friends so i thought i would try it out. I didn't get confused at any point only with one of the characters so in the end it didn't matter if i saw the series or not really, but i will take into consideration to watch the series because i did love the characters and idea of the whole movie. ART For a 2010 movie, wow.. I don't really focus on art-styles of animes as th…

It will be a short review with a bit of SPOILERs, so you have been warned... I will ask you to watch this Anime only if you have watched The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, as otherwise you will not get what the hell is happening. For me, it's one of the best post Anime movie, which actually brought a big part into closure, the feelings of MC, Kyon, as well as the second most important character in the show, Yuki Nagato. It's always Yuki who has to do the most work, let it be the 7 days arc or other arcs, and we also wonder does she really feel anything, this movie answers those questions. Watching Disappearance of Nagato Yuki is best, as it takes us into the world where Kyon decided to let it be, but it's for another time. Apart from story, everything else is great too. The Animation, In…

When I first started this series I enjoyed it as I would with any other 6-8/10 rated anime. Season 1 was good but didn't like hit me in the heart or anything, season 2 was a bit different but carried on the same thing and I kinda felt a bit bored, I just wanna make a note that I watched this series in the chrono order ( I had no idea it's different from the release order until I finished it :p ) and wasn't really excited for the movie as I thought it will be just the same, but I was wrong and I realized that those 2 seasons were only just an appetizer and preperation for the real deal : the suzumiya haruhi movie, it was literally an emotional rollercoaster and hella of a ride, it had the perfect plot for such a series, I liked everything about it, from the great music to the awesome monolo…

one of the best anime movies ive seento date, it takes all the good parts of the series without the flaws and perfect execution with kyoanis superb animation, soundtrack, visuals(obviously). it started off slowly and it set up the perfect foundation for what came at the second half of the movie. you will be on the edge of your seat the whole time trying to figure out the reasons for these bizarre events and how they connect with each other. characters that dosent have much focus suddenly gain alot of development. one of the best 160 minutes i have spend in my life, the movie is soo good that it can even surpass the imfamous endless eight arc! a full 10/10 from me
