the animation is genuinely beautiful, and i really appreciate how some scenes were adapted from the manga. there are moments that feel much more emotional and meaningful in the anime, with added details that make the overall atmosphere feel more impactful. the magic system is also one of my favorite aspects of the series. i love how it works, it makes magic feel like a craft that requires knowledge and practice rather than just an ability someone is born with, and i love how much potential that creates for the worldbuilding. i also appreciate that the magic system isn't completely detached from the society built around it.
unfortunately, these aspects aren't enough to make me particularly invested in the story. my biggest issue is coco and the way the narrative handles her actions and the…

Witch Hats, Wasted Potential xD
A 13-episode anime that ends before anything interesting actually happens. It serves as an introduction to a creative world that nonetheless feels lifeless. This is arguably the least engaging first season of a potentially interesting series, as it ignores everything that makes the premise compelling..........
Plot:
"Coco dreams of becoming a sorceress, although magic is only available to the initiated. When she discovers the secret of its operation, she unknowingly brings about a tragedy. Under the tutelage of the wizard Qifrey, she begins to learn magic, learning its possibilities, limitations, and dangers." --If I had to summarize this anime with a comparison, I would say it's "Harry Potter + Star Wars as medieval fantasy," but it push…

The only problem is that the plot writing always relies on characters either acting recklessly or just sitting there and watch crises happen for no reason. They react to situations weirdly and feels manipulated by the author. That said I couldn't deduct more then 2 points as this show is produced way too well.
You might not like it if you get irritated easily from people acting silly or childishly, or hate it when authors manipulate their plots too deliberately.
If you like the art of anime production, is a fan of cool world-building, like distinct and charming characters, you're in for a treat.

This season is like Megumi from JJK, “Potential man”,
Now the show is good, it’s setting up some interesting themes, moral dilemmas, characters, world building, etc. Plus, the magic system is so cool and creative. Furthermore, it’s beautiful with great visuals and it’s so whimsical and gripping. it really does have potential to be one of the GOATs.
However, if I’m rating this season alone, I can’t really give it higher than a 7, as we haven’t really had any pay off yet. Plus, I really disliked how they ended season 1, I was so confused thinking that there was another episode, it just randomly stopped with no resolution with what felt like a cliffhanger for the next episode.
Now this isn’t a knock on the show, I haven’t read the manga so I don’t know where it’s going, but with a couple…

The premise of this story is that all characters are supposedly radically good. The problem with the writing is that the author doesn't really allow conflict to develop in a natural way. It's always coming from the outside, which makes everything rather predictable, even more so because all of them are terribly cliché. There's a modicum of complexity at the end of the season, but not enough for compelling character writing and storytelling. The character that surprised me the most is Brushbuddy. Yes, it's that bad on that front. That being said there might be potential if things start to develop with more nuances of grey in later seasons.

I'm going to start this review rather blunt. In my honest and humble opinion, this anime is quite overrated. But that is by no means me saying it is bad, I simply think it isn't as good as I was initially led to believe it was by those speaking about it and the review score.
--- What I Liked ---
The initial concept is good. I love the idea of this forbidden magic that only those privy to knowing it understand. It does feel rather realistic. Historically, the ability to read and write was not only rare amongst commoners because education was not like it is today, but (to oversimplify a bit) it was also often pushed against by those in power as it was seen as a dangerous ability for those beneath them to have as it could backfire on them, so naturally that kind of logic would apply to som…

8/10 ~ woah
Its rare that we get a world that just feels so fresh, yet so familiar. Its hard to explain, Once you get past the awe of the stunning visuals of the show, you start to realize how much sense the magic system has, yet how alien it feels compared to all other fantasy. It almost feels like science mascaraing as magic to both the audience and the outside... muggles.
It is the rare show where it lets kids be kids, but doesnt feel like its a show for kids. The show tackles some adult topics and really is written for all age audience. I am very excited to see where future seasons takes us!

Tongari Boushi no Atelier is an anime based on one of the most acclaimed mangas in the last 10 years, made by Kamome Shirahama. The story follows a 10 y.o. girl named Coco, who is obsessed with magic and wants to be a witch, but a disaster involving a mysterious book brutally affected her mother. Qifrey, an experienced witch, witnessed everything and wanted to borrow Coco’s memories because she used a forbidden magic, but she promises to keep it in secret and the teacher accepts, allowing the girl to learn how to be a witch in order to cure her mother. It sounds like a truly wonderful story, however, as the episodes were released, I started to feel more and more disappointed. Why? Read my review for more.

Witch Hat Atelier is a beautiful fantasy series with a wonderfully creative magic system that instantly sets it apart. It captures that magical-school charm that made Harry Potter so appealing, while creating a world that feels completely its own. I quickly grew attached to the cast, especially Agott, Qifrey, and Coco, with Riche also getting some welcome attention later on. The opening episodes are especially captivating, and while the pacing becomes slower afterwards, I still enjoyed the more character-focused approach and the time spent exploring the world. The season does end at an awkward point, but it mostly left me excited to see what comes next rather than disappointed with where it stopped. On top of that, the production is exceptional, with stunning visuals, beautiful lighting, a…

Overall it's a very solid adaptation of a phenomenal story, but it definitely needed a few more episodes. There are a lot of very, very good additions (some of the earlier episodes cleanly outdo the source material due to these), and naturally there was a lot that had to be cut. The main thing that drags the adaptation down in my eyes is that much of what was cut (especially pertaining to the main character) are things that continuously get brought up and built on throughout the story - lines or scenes that may have been 'inconsequential' enough to be cut for the first season that will end up breaking very important scenes down the line with their absence.
The pacing also gets a little crazy towards the end. The last few episodes feel very cramped. The setup for the arc is heavily trunca…

The animation for Witch Hat Atelier is great, but otherwise the show is massively overrated, it baffles me how highly rated it is.
The show tries to convey a serious story, but at the same time it's very childish while it portrays a bunch of whiney little witches. A lot of the characters are annoying, coco in particular. I guess nearly killing her own mother wasn't enough to knock some sense into her and change her attitude into a more serious one. Overall she's a fool hampered by her own addiction to the idea of magic. It doesn't help that the show constantly tries to portray her childish infatuation with magic, with the sparkling eyes and all.
Let's talk about Qifrey for a moment, how has he not questioned how coco found out about the first test and how she went to take it? The story s…

The starting of the anime was really good (especially episode 1). Then somewhere around I felt like the anime is not worth the hype. I was constantly thinking -
- Do I like any of the characters?
- How can it be compared to the mighty animes such as Frieren or Orb?
I don't like the characters Coco or Qifrey. But neither I got to understand other characters deeply. But around episode 10 or so, the anime delivered. I really liked the backstory of Tartah and Richeh. I can finally understand why people see potential in this anime.
Solid 9/10 anime. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but its a good watch.

It presents a fascinating world of magic, showcasing a completely unique approach to the craft; the animation is beautiful, and the love put into its creation really shines through.
The protagonist is a standout; her perspective on magic is compelling, allowing you to connect with her right from the start, and you can clearly see her growth as the episodes progress.
The supporting characters are solid. each seems to have their own backstory, though I feel the focus was perhaps too heavily placed on one individual, leaving other storylines somewhat sidelined; still, I hope we get to learn more about the others later on.
We don't see much of the villains, but they seem to have a lot of potential; they hold a completely different view of magic, effectively making them rebels or outlaws.

Because people have been so eager to compare this story to Frieren, naturally, my expectations were high and they were not met. I only finished the season because I was watching it together with others.
The magic system
I can't deny that it's somewhat unique, but in order to bring something new to the table, it sacrifices the most appealing aspect of magic: it's coolness. Here the most important requirement of being good at magic is drawing circles and lines prettily. Also memorizing as many as possible. It's kind of like learning kanji... I admit it would be cool if I could do magic by drawing kanjis but I would suck at it so it wouldn't be too much fun. Anyway I can tell that the writer is trying hard to show creative ways you can use this power and that there's more to it then just dr…

I like how the story uses magic as a political structure that’s inseparable from the rest of the world. Ordinary people are excluded from knowledge about magic even though, in reality, everyone can learn it. Is this a form of authoritarianism, I wonder?
The Pointed Hats have a reason for controlling magic because there was a disaster caused by its use in the past. However, protecting people from danger has also turned into a monopoly on knowledge. The Brimmed Hats oppose this system, but opposing the system doesn’t necessarily make their methods right. This makes the conflict more complicated than good vs. evil, which is very good for me.
Coco is a protagonist who wasn’t born with some special talent. She learns through practice and gradually understands that knowledge with power comes w…

I'm remaking this review again because I just reread it and realize just how confusing and unnecessarily long it is lol, well anyways.
If you've been living under a rock and have never heard of this anime back in spring, it's basically the one hailed as part of the big 3 of the fantasy genre alongside Frieren and Dungeon Meshi, and I got to say, I feel like it doesn't quite live up to the hype it had.
To expand on this let's look at the anime itself. You got a world where everyone can do magic via drawing, but it is kept hidden from regular civilians as to not repeat the chaos of what happened back then when magic had no restrictions. Our mc Coco traces a magic book and bam her mom gets petrified and she gets taken in by the witch named Qifrey to be an apperentice, honestly a great way to…

Okay. Watched this with my daughter (13yo)
We were both very excited since it was about witches, magic, beautiful art, and high reviews - check check check.
We started watching n watched n watched and finished the S1.
We both agreed that its wasn't ALL that at all!
We came from watching Wisteria - sword and wand. And it was waaaay more fun and exciting and happening than this show.
Story: is ok. But literally is it the pace or just something was missing like it wasnt properly glued. Kinda slow pacing as well.
Also, its kinda political, about prejudice of who should have access to magic and who decides that. Its honestly super annoying - some small group of humans deciding who gets to learn magic or have their memories wiped.
Overall, it just becomes Not enjoyment, but rather annoying to…

Modern anime is a different ball park, the 1st episodes just get more and more intense with every new series. there's always so much that happens in such a short period of in-world time. I’m immediately taken aback and littered with questions. I guess that's the point... I'm just glad the quality only seems to go up from there, as far as WHA goes.
WHA is dangerously addictive thanks to the beautiful animation, art and the sea of cliffhangers it drowns in; of course the series ended on another one... I'm mildly concerned with how the newer seasons are going to progress now that we know this is clearly not where it ends. there is no huge story ark in this show, just characters learning, growing and exploring
The characters are very fun, interesting and loveable. which makes the series easy…

Really like the idea of drawing magic. It's such a cool way of doing a magic system and makes the actual process of using magic more interesting to watch. Cool soundtrack and animation too, there were quite a few moments where I just liked how everything looked and sounded together.
Story was a bit predictable though and you can kinda see where things are going, but I think it's still worth a watch. It has really cozy medieval aesthetics too which I liked a lot. The towns, rooms, clothes and just the general setting have this warm fantasy feeling to them that makes it pretty easy to get into.
I was noticing the patterns in the interiors too, like how they have cushions and stuff that are embroidered, patterned fabrics, little decorations and all these small details in the background whic…

It must be complicated to make a magic based setting nowadays because of how commonly used it is, even more if you want to be somewhat original about it, yet Atelier manages to do it somewhat by mixing it with arts, as in its world, it is a common energy present anywhere that anybody can use by literally drawing the magic circles of the spells, but for the sake of it not falling into wrong hands, its way of functioning and using remains hidden and controlled by the “witches”, which in this case it encompasses wizards, mages, it is all the same thing.
Yet the protagonist, a little girl named Coco, finds out how it works and uses a spell indirectly taught to her by a, later known, dark magic arts user, working as the main antagonist of the series of sorts, and accidentally hurts her mother…
