I honestly think this isn't as bad as people said it is, but I do have quite a bit of problems.
First and foremost is the animation, which many people have complained about and yes, the CGI sticks out like a sore thumb, but it's charming in a way. I get that they were trying to make the action more like the manga, but at least try and have the pacing of the 1997 series and have slow moments.
The pacing here is just way too fast for my liking and feels almost like an abridged version of the series. It definitely should've had a few additional minutes to improve the pacing issues.
The things that I did like were the music, which was phenomenal, the voice acting in the dub, which was really good since it's the same voice cast as the 1997 series, and some of the animation was actually re…

I absolutely love Beserk, but the animation (specifically the weird 3D rotoscope-esque stuff) is terrible and distracting. As a fan of the series, I think non-manga readers will enjoy walk away from this piece feeling confused and without answers. Far too much is left out - if you are interested in Beserk, watch the 1997 series and read the manga. The rating I've given here was elevated primarily by my bias as I was already a fan going into watching this. There are a few scenes I liked, and the non-3D animation was fine. If the entire film was in that style I certainly would've rated it much higher. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this, especially not to unindoctrinated viewers.

Let's keep this short. I have no problems with the audiovisual design or the voice acting. And it's Berserk's story and characters, which are great.
Would be 1 point higher if there was less cut content and it would be a 10 for me if on top of that it had Junketsu no Maria level of combat and armor realism.
Instead, it's even worse than in the manga. For example, what the hell was that scene with just hitting with like 10 overhead slashes in a row and the other guy just holding out the axe horizontally in the same position the whole time?
Why wear that heavy and expensive lamellar armor when you can still be easily skewered to the hilt with a normal arming sword by a normal person? Why wear that shiny and REALLY expensive plate breastplate when a bolt from a small crossbow easily penetrat…

This needs some explaining and this could get lengthy.
But it needs to be done really.
Quick note; I watched a American-English dubbed version instead of the original Japanese version. This could have been part of why it gives me mixed feelings as you will read. Often the English dubs are really cringe and makes a mess of the original. So please keep that in mind, it could be the case here as well.
Now I won't talk about the story directly so no spoilers are given away.
But I can talk about the story progression, which is all over the place.
You get a lot of snippets of the past and the present at different times to see. However nothing is really in order, nothing is really following common sense either. This makes it most of all very difficult to follow. Now if this was done in a more de…

If I had to describe this in a few words, it's basically a recap of some of the events of Berserk, but with a mix of Cgi and another art form. Not to say it's a bad recap or anything, but it's only really there for those that either read the original manga or watched the original 25 episode anime that came out way earlier.
The good parts to this are that the animation is good for when it was released. Granted it's nothing too special these days, but still enough to be watchable. The scenes it does recap are pretty faithful to how they originally look (Need I remind I watched the 25 episode version before I read the manga, don't quote me there.)
But the mixed parts are what drag it down for me at least. The recap scenes while faithful are missing a few important scenes that make the conte…

This movie was quite fun to watch and looked better than I expected it to be. Animation was quite alright. CGI was used very often, but it was implemented either well or properly into the whole show. Music was pleasant to listen to (even if it was not anything special), and voice acting was top-notch. Voice acting from Japan once again did not disappoint.
Why such low score, then? Let me explain it later on in this spoiler free review. But before that I must say once again that this movie was fun to watch to me. I'd lie if I said it wasn't. However few problems affected the overal score to the point that it'd be unfair to put my personal enjoyment over elements that were either objectively bad, or that I saw as bad myself.
My main issue with Berserk: The Golden Age Arc I - The Egg of the…

To preface, I have read the manga before watching this, so a lot of my review will be talking about how well the material is adopted, rather than how it is by itself. Most other works I wouldn't do this but Berserk the exception in that the manga itself has such a high quality that any narrative change will probably be for the detriment. This will have slight spoilers.
Story: Because the movie is only 70ish minutes, I understand and am disappointed in the details they couldn't show in the order they were told in the manga. While it felt coherent because they left out details that don't make the cut, not having it makes fights not as impactful and not knowing the reason for doing things. Except for Guts' upbringing and the talk on the ramparts after one of the first battles, most of the im…

“Berserk” despite not needing introduction is a manga adaptation with Studio 4oC at the front of animation and what an expectation did they were expected to meet by animating one of if not the best manga ever drawn. And comparing to the 3D animation disaster that is “Berserk (2016)” it did a decent job.
As far as animation goes, despite not being absolutely appalling, I can comfortably say that it was far from the quality that a manga like “Berserk” deserved. Some actions were clunky and not very detailed, the art-style was a lot less impactful or terrifying. The fights were mediocre and not that overwhelming as it was supposed plus, the emotions and terrifying moments that exist don’t flow or express themselves as well.
The plot is really…

The first in a trilogy of movies which follow the Golden age arc which is probably the most famous and well loved Berserk story. It's the origin of Guts, a hard as nails swordsman who joins a group of mercenaries called The band of the hawk and his relationship with it's charismatic leader Griffith. It all takes place in a semi-realistic medieval setting but it progresses to include supernatural and full on horror elements.
The movie isn't very long at 77 minutes so if you've seen the 1997 anime series which is based on the same arc then it might be a bit jarring at how quickly the story plays out and how it skips over important moments.
Just think of it as a streamlined version of the arc. The characters aren't as deep as they are in the series but it works fine for a what it is and the…

This review is for those who’ve never watched/read Berserk. The opening of the movie was interesting, there is something about Guts eyes and the the directing from that point forward was amazing. there is a lot of bloodshed. After the end of the first scene you would think that Guts is unconquerable, he kinda is but there will be someone ahead of him. From that point on the story is more about Griffith and Guts’ friendship or is it a leader/follower relationship. Watch the movie, its pretty entertaining.
Personally I am a huge Berserk fan!! I’m kinda disappointed because I really wanted to see more of the manga in the movie. Though the directing was amazing. Its pretty much a recap of the first 10 episodes or so of the anime. It had good graphics but I really wished that they would make i…

A pretty bad adaptation of one of the greatest manga arcs of all time. I do think adapting this arc as a movie trilogy provides more positives than negatives. Although it would suffer from some cut content (which in turn would affect the characterization and thematic depth) due to not being able to adapt everything in comparison to a TV series that has more time, it would be able to reach the extremely high artistic standards of the manga.
Berserk has some of the greatest art in any comic book, which makes it one of the hardest manga to adapt properly (also in part because of other aspects, like how it uses the comic medium to its full potential). A TV anime would not be able to do it justice because of the limited budgets and extremely tight schedules that plague a lot of shows in the i…

Their is allot you can speak of for this movie but immediately I noticed the animation. I generally don't consider myself a snob when it comes to CGI or sensitive to framerates, but this animation was UNNACEPTABLY choppy. This was not something i got used to, and if they where truly unable to render more smooth animation in time, they should have simplified the models! It is no exaggeration to say the cut scenes in the 1999 Dreamcast game where easier to watch than this, if only cause they worked within their limits. Even if it's not, this felt like a rushed job, not just a low budget one. Regardless of the rest of what i say here, this alone makes it something I cannot recommend while the manga and other anime exist.
-The story is very cutdown, leaving much to be desired. it does have go…

I am writing this review for all three movie parts. I watched them back to back.
The first two movie parts are fine, but the third.. just god aweful. Apparently you REALLY need to watch the other shows and read the manga to understand this movie.
Music:
The music was like... all over the place. The intro music is weird....Not a fan of the music in the last episode.
Characters:
The characters weren't bad. They were all pretty well defined and had specific characteristics. Story:
The story of this show, was just garbage. The first two points in the score are for the first two episodes. Both of those 1 hour episodes were good, and had a great back story that connected with each other well. The problem was the third episode, or the third movie. It was two hours long, and had barely any con…

Berserk: The Golden Age Arc I: The Egg of the King
Director: Toshiyuki Kubooka
Original Creator: Kentarou Miura
Many die-hard Berserk fans have been waiting forever for another Anime adaptation of the greatest Manga of all time - Kentarou Miura's Berserk ever since the original 1997 Anime adaptation ended on a huge cliffhanger. Many people wanted a second season that would continue where the '97 one left off. However, instead we got a retelling of arguably the greatest arc in Manga of all time - the Golden Age arc of Berserk. Many people hated this film comparing it to the Manga. However, as a stand-alone film, it is fantastic and here's why.
Story (10/10): The story of the film is a copy and paste of the story in the early volumes of Ken…

This review covers the whole Golden Age Arc trilogy
To put it bluntly, this is not the best adaptation of the Berserk manga. The 1997 TV anime did a far better job at capturing the soul of the source material. Yes, that adaptation made several changes, but the hope, fear, ambition, friendship, betrayal and tragedy survived intact. I can't quite say the same for this one. The greatest flaw of this trilogy is that it mostly misunderstands what Berserk is about. The first two movies eagerly rush to the next large battle or major plot point, forgetting to pause and take a breath every now and then. The action and violence are a large part of the appeal of Berserk (I won't lie, that was what got younger edge-lord me into the manga), but the heart of the original story is in the quiet moments b…

If you haven't seen the 1997 anime of Berserk or read the Manga, don't even bother watching this anime until you do. This isn't really a movie, it's more of an elongated re-cap of the events of the Golden Age arc of Berserk. For me, I really enjoyed it because I watched the 1997 version of the anime back in the day, and I really loved it. But, I didn't get around to this anime until now, so this felt like a blast of nostalgia for me. Because so much time has passed, this was like a beautifully animated (for 2012) reminder of what I liked about Berserk and I see it as a set up to a completion of the anime that never finished coming down the pipe.
With that being said, you will not like this anime if you aren't familiar with it. It gives no character backstory, it gives very little in the…

Berserk, Berserk, Berserk… what more can be said about Berserk? I figured one more review couldn’t hurt.
This is for the Golden Age arc movies released from 2012-2013. I never watched the original anime series nor have I or frankly ever will watch the latest series to be released, but I have come to understand that the movies serve as a bridge between some of the evens in the original anime and the latest anime to air.
Off of first impressions, the anime is beautiful. The art and cinematography are amazing, much better visually than the original anime, which isn’t difficult considering the anime first aired in the 90′s. The animation is modern and they even utilize CGI and Cell Shading in some moments which are a bit strange but don’t take too much away from the overall vision and flow…

No spoilers and I will keep it somewhat short.
Oh boy, this is a very touchy subject, reviewing berserk especially these remakes, either you hate or love it. Me, I am more like it is okay but meh.
The movie summaries the many first episodes of the original series and being a movie with a shorter running time it makes it necessary to cut some scenes. Overall I must say that it kept the feel of berserk but being more superficial because the interacting between the supporting characters are almost gone which gives the movie of somewhat a feel of being a very lonely world, as if only griffith, Guts, Casca and enemies were there.
I would say on the other hand if you are a new comer or one who doesn´t like more older animes then this might be a good gateway to the berserk franchise, but I myse…

The story was okay but it was a bit rushed (although it is understandable because they are trying to fit in so much content) and it misses a lot of the friendship between Guts and The Band Of The Hawk that really made me care about the characters in the manga. The art was surprisingly good and the sound was alright. I think my enjoyment came from reliving the start of Berserk in an animated format instead of just reading it. So to wrap things up I do not think that Berserk: Ougon Jidai-hen I - Haou no Tamago is as good as the manga but it is definitely still worth watching or even collecting if that is your thing!

This is essentially the same story that is told in the 1990s Berserk.
There may have been some cuts here and there, but my memory is fuzzy. I watched the original Berserk anime nearly fifteen years ago so not everything is fresh in my mind. I do, however, remember some key plot points. But I do understand if there had to be cuts made to fit parts into a one hour sixteen minute runtime.
The animation in this show is top notch, and though I've heard tell that many consider this to be an inferior version because of the 3D used in this adaptation, I find those to all be spurious allegations. The artwork in this adaptation of Berserk is a bit better than the original series.
A huge disappointment, however, comes in the soundtrack. That's to be expected given that this adaptation is done unde…
