Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Introduction

Dreams are doomed to die in Night City, a futuristic Californian metropolis. As a teenager living in the city's slums, David Martinez is trying to fulfill his mother's lifelong wish for him to reach the top of Arasaka, the world's leading security corporation. To this end, he attends the prestigious Arasaka Academy while his mother works tirelessly to keep their family afloat. When an incident with a street gang leaves David's life in tatters, he stumbles upon Sandevistan cyberware—a prosthetic that grants its wearer superhuman speed. Fueled by rage, David implants the device in his back, using it to exact revenge on one of his tormentors. This gets him expelled from the academy, shattering his hopes of ever making his mother proud. After witnessing David's newfound abilities, the beautiful data thief Lucyna "Lucy" Kushinada offers to team up with him, handing him a ticket to salvation. However, associating with Lucy introduces David to the world of Edgerunners—cyborg criminals who will break any law for money. Edgerunners often lose their lives, if the cyberware does not break their minds first; but in his fight for survival inside a corrupt system, David is ready to risk it all. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Wow, rewatching the original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners after sitting through that sequel is like getting a direct massage to the soul. It's like watching one of those satisfying transformation videos where a super dirty homeless guy takes a bath and gets a haircut, but instead of some second-hand simulated enjoyment, every pore of your own body gets washed down and chromed up till sparkly. Not much I even really want to say about specifics, but Edgerunners knows how to efficiently use its small amount of time. I am stunned by the quality in direction; every minor decision adds on top of another and creates one of the best available in the anime medium. Zero time waste--must watch recommendation

As a player of the tabletop RPGs (Cyberpunk 2020 and Cyberpunk RED), I find Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to be a great adaptation of the brutal, cynical reality of Night City. The anime perfectly captures the daily struggle of street-level mercenaries, corporate oppression, and the dark inevitability of the franchise's universe, where the system always wins. It delivers a deeply emotional and visceral ride, though it suffers from severe pacing issues and inconsistent production values that hold it back from absolute perfection. The narrative successfully nails the core theme of a cyberpunk tragedy, but its 10-episode limit forces the plot to sprint through major time skips and character progression. This breakneck speed prevents the world from breathing, creating a story that feels incredibly r…

I know this is a bit late but I really wanted to write a review to show how much I appreciate this work of art. Really. Cyberpunk Edgerunners 1 had me shattered for 2 weeks after watching it. Aside from ATLA, no series or anime ever made me as emotional. The characters as well as their fate are just perfectly written and fit the dark dystopia precisely. I think I dont even have to mention the soundtrack, I've been listing to some of the songs even untill today. Especially I Really Want to Stay at Your House always keeps giving me the chills, even today. The animation can't really be doubted, Studio Trigger really cooked right there, the visuals and the excessive gore just make a seemless syimbiosis between cruelty and beauty. TRULY ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS EVER!

I have watched this one fairly late, but I am glad I have watched it exactly now since I feel like I am able to resonate the storytelling of this anime far better than I would have before. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was an anime I approached with skepticism at first due to low episode count and my distance towards cyberpunk genre, but this anime expresses emotional wavelength and storyline so precise and smooth that the episode count feels a lot more than it actually is. It knows exactly when to pace up and to slow down while not feeling rushed. While many recent anime air with 12 episodes and still need a second or third season to barely reach a stalemate, Edgerunners manages to tell a story that starts and ends in 10 episodes without feeling incomplete or rushed. I also liked how this anime…

I can’t express how awe struck I am with this show, everything from the writing, to the direction, both of art and the action sequences, to the MUSIC DIRECTION (arguably the best part) is just done so masterfully, with so much love, thought, efforts and care put into them Starting off with the overall setting and atmosphere, its so beautifully tragic, everything in night city represents the peak of how a hyper-capitalistic world and city would look like, with corporations fighting over tech/economic and social power to rule and expand their operations, no matter the cost borne, as long as it doesn’t overpower the profits, nothing matters, Their cruel and clever nature are at the very epicenter of Night city and kick off the story as a whole, Everyone is selfish, everyone is cruel, trust i…

Damm. I'm at a loss for words It genuinely hit Just wow, enough to make me shed a tear Apparently I have to say some things that make sense so, here's some text to fill it, just a general feeling, not mine so don't mind reading: I honestly just finished the final episode, and I am still sitting here completely blown away, trying to process everything I just watched. I usually don’t write reviews, but Cyberpunk: Edgerunners affected me so much that I felt an absolute need to log on and give it a well-deserved perfect ten. Going into it, I wasn’t sure what to expect since video game adaptations can be so hit-or-miss, but this show completely shattered every expectation…

I think there's a lot of great parts about cyberpunk but god the story is so laughably bad. I feel like this anime struggles to really capture the characters. I think the biggest flaw is David's motivations not really being strong enough and most of the characters are somewhat underdeveloped. The reason could be episode count but I dont think that is the biggest reason. I just think the writing isn't very good. This feels like one of those animes that people hype up because they haven't watched alot of anime iykyk. I think the music and OST are like an 8/10 - 9/10. The the story is like a 3/10. I think its worth a watch but dont get fooled by the people that rate this a 10.

I thought I was going to watch a stylish cyberpunk action anime but I didn’t expect it to affect me this much. The story follows David who gets pulled into the dangerous world of mercenaries and cybernetic enhancements after his life suddenly changes. I liked how the series shows the consequences of chasing power in a world that doesn’t really care about you. The characters are one of the strongest parts of the anime. David, Lucy, Maine and the rest of the crew all have their own dreams and flaws. Their relationships feel genuine which made the emotional moments hit much harder. The animation is incredible and the visual style fits Night City perfectly. The action is fast and brutal but the quieter scenes are just as memorable. The soundtrack also fits the mood really well. It’s only t…

A fantastic heart wrenching story, lovable and believable characters, well crafted world building, and matching memorable music. If there is one gripe viewers may have, it would be the longing for more. More episodes, more time with these characters... This Edgerunner shaped hole, is what brings people back to this show. For how short Edgerunners is, it is unbelievably impactful. Both in its message and exploration of presented themes, this show delivers. After finishing the show every rewatch feels like a bittersweet remembrance, of a bygone time. If you feel like a shedding a tear tonight, Night city awaits you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: There is no need to k…

Honestly so nostalgic coming back to this. So far the only anime I’ve ever finished, and was so amazing it stayed in my mind up till now, where a recent cyberpunk kick has gotten me more or less obsessed with the universe. Such beautiful and faithful locations and action, and full of references that any fan of this world would appreciate. This was a joy to watch for the insanely compelling characters that interact in ways that make the world feel so alive and complicated. I love cyberpunk, and this show is an amazing representation of not just the video game, but the spirit of the original ttrpg.

This show was so nuts man. My watching experience for this show was the most "they had us in the first half, not gonna lie" kind of experience I've ever had cuz oh my god that second half hit so hard. As someone who probably processes stuff slower than the average person, I had a really hard time following what was happening for the first half of the show because they just throw so much at you at such a fast pace. I get that they had to do that if they wanted to make this show 10 episodes long, but just a little more context (and maybe a couple more episodes) probably wouldn’t have hurt and definitely would’ve enhanced the viewing experience. Once you get past episode 6 and understand everything that happens up to that point, the show gets a little more processable. Up to around episode 7…

This show really suffers from a 10 episode cap. That is its biggest issue I believe. I feel like the show would have been much better if it had a few more episodes to flesh out the characters and plot. With the current limit of 10 episodes the plot feels like whiplash, majority of the cast are not fleshed out, and the ending leaves much to be desired. The plot is solid until the finale. The finale felt very forced and some of the plot elements made no real sense. I still do believe this is a worthwhile watch. The illustrations are vibrant and the world setting, my first true dive into the Cyberpunk world, is amazing.

Solid show. Rebbeca easily makes this show being the most bad-ass, sisterly-advice-giving, wholesome but crazy character you could think of. Main character is also interesting, but becomes significantly less relatable after episode 6. The last four episodes kinda add a bunch of senseless, unnecessary violence imo, (and I'm saying that in comparison to all the violence in the first 6 episodes that I feel is perfectly fine for the story). Nonetheless, the ending remains impactful and it's a story I'd even be willing to re-watch (and already have a couple times. Definitely recommend, as long as you're okay with some gruesome scenes here and there!

This show is near perfect. The world building and atmosphere of night city, complimented by beautiful and trippy animations amplified the cyberpunk persona the show embodies. This show really hit deep for me because I saw aspects of our modern day society in night city. Elaborating on this would take me too long unless you want an essay lol. The story follows David, who, after experiencing a life-altering event, makes one wrong choice after another. His lack of maturity causes him to make reckless choices that end up hurting himself and the ones he’s grown attached too. David’s character development shines in these moments as the do the other characters. The supporting characters all felt well-rounded, with each one contributing to the dynamic in their own unique ways. These characters a…

This anime wasn't that bad, although I really expected it to be better. People praise it most for its stunning animation, which I agree is really good and nice to look at, but for me animation isn't such a decisive factor when it comes to enjoyment. The first thing to point out is its amazing setting which seems endless and can be experimented with. The idea of a few of big corporations striving for power and control over the city and its people is one I really enjoyed. The characters and story, on the other hand, are a bit more mediocre. Sure, the character designs are great but there isn't a lot of depth to them, excluding David and Lucy to some extent, which does make sense since the anime is so short. The story and everything else that was trying to be said through it felt a little bi…

Cyberpunk Edgerunners — I Am NOT Okay 10/10. Moving on. Ok fine I'll elaborate. The action goes insane. The characters are great. The romance is actually written well which in this day and age deserves a medal. The animation is gorgeous. The music made me want to show up at someone's house unannounced to process my emotions in company. And then there's episode 6. I'm not talking about it. I refuse. All I'll say is that I was not ready and neither will you be and the show does not care even slightly. And the ending. I have been watching anime long enough to know better. I really have. And yet somehow I still expected things to work out. They did not work out. I was not okay. I am still not okay. I came in expecting a fun action anime. I left traumatized. 10/10 would let it ruin my day…

Wow. I have never seen a Studio Trigger anime before, and this one blew me away. If you want to watch an action anime with Michael Bay explosions and brutal storytelling, then this is one of Trigger's perfect batches. A must recommend for people who want to watch anime. Please do (unless you want them to have low expectations). The animation is absolutely phenomenal, almost stylized. The visual effects were what pulled it together, along with exaggerated expressions that make everyone look psychopathic. The use of fish lens perspectives is novel charm I cherish from Trigger. A neon chaotic hellscape bridging between light and dark to pull your emotions. My only problem is the abundancy of still frames, where a static scene will have no motion for 5 seconds or more, which felt disappointin…

Undoubtably a very good anime, a great one even, but marred by overhype and the rabid Cyberpunk 2077 fandom. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a story set before the events of the game: Cyberpunk 2077 but both stories are very much isolated from each other and not required to know either to enjoy the other. I also highly recommend watching this in English as there are a lot of made-up slang and terminologies that sound more natural and immersive in English whereas a lot of this might get lost in translation if you were to simply read it while hearing it in another language. David Martinez, a teenage boy from the slums loses his Mother in an unrelated but common altercation and discovers the Sandevistan: a cyber implant that gives its wearer superhuman speed. The use of this implant gets the att…
