Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions

Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions

Introduction

Fear, survival, instinct. Thrown into a foreign land with nothing but hazy memories and the knowledge of their name, they can feel only these three emotions resonating deep within their souls. A group of strangers is given no other choice than to accept the only paying job in this game-like world—the role of a soldier in the Reserve Army—and eliminate anything that threatens the peace in their new world, Grimgar. When all of the stronger candidates join together, those left behind must create a party together to survive: Manato, a charismatic leader and priest; Haruhiro, a nervous thief; Yume, a cheerful hunter; Shihoru, a shy mage; Moguzo, a kind warrior; and Ranta, a rowdy dark knight. Despite its resemblance to one, this is no game—there are no redos or respawns; it is kill or be killed. It is now up to this ragtag group of unlikely fighters to survive together in a world where life and death are separated only by a fine line. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Calm and relaxing Background music in between the episodes. Love the watercolour animation. But even after all of this - storyline is very weak and boring. In the name of action of it has low level goblin fights .. Not a single episode has an actual real action packed fighting scenes. Story - The biggest problem is the pacing. Nothing fucking happens. The characters enter this fantasy world with no memories, join a party, fight weak monsters, struggle to make money, cry about their problems, and repeat the process. drama here feels so cringe and dramatic , all they were doing just crying over dead characters . Drama - seriously ,The Deaths This is probably the biggest thing people praise about Grimgar. "Anyone can die!" Yes, and? A character dying doesn't automatically make a story emoti…

Grimgar un monde de cendres et de fantaisie The amount of complexity and novelty that this twelve episode isekai has is incredible. What starts of as a predictable plot quickly gets turned upside down. The main cohort has to learn how to cooperate, deal with the emotional toll that comes from taking the life of creatures (that wish to survive just as much as them), live together and scrap by each day to be able to eat and fulfil their fleeting desires (eating meat, buying new underwears). The author of this story and the director of the anime aren't afraid to show the ugly and "boring" parts of life such as dealing with grief, introspecting and getting to know your teammates better. The amount of self-aware anime protagonists like Haruhiro can be counted on a single hand. He asks himself…

Grimgar is the best take on the fundamentals of isekai I have seen to date. It's like the writers sat down and said "Let's make a realistic isekai", and then proceeded to deliver on that mission statement in its entirety. Goblins aren't just fodder; they are real challenges for our newbie characters. Fighting and tactics don't come naturally; characters have to use their brain and everything at their disposal. Difficult topics like death and inter-party issues aren't glossed over; the characters have to work through their troubles. I best summarize the show in this cold-ass sentence: Grimgar is adding reality to a genre that has forsaken it. Isekai's pitch is 'how would you manage in a foreign world that's fantastical?'. Most isekai's do a shit job of answering this question in favor of…

Its so fucking peak 😭 This has to be one of the best isekais out there easily. I cannot find one issue with this show, other than the pacing (arguable) and the fanservice. The characters are all so amazing, they each feel like your basic stereotypes at first, but then by the end, you can't find one actual reason to hate them. The background is so fucking beautiful, I can deadass feel and see each stroke that went into making this masterpiece. Some of the best backgrounds I have ever seen in any anime. The music is amazing and fits each scene so perfect, my eyes felt watery at times just being lost in a trance at how beautiful the music sections are complemented by the background art. I cannot glaze this series enough, it embodies what modern isekais are missing: heartwarming moments, dram…

It’s really bad. I’ve watched a lot of bad anime. But this makes 0 sense. It has the pacing of a 100 episode anime that’s only 12 episodes, so basically nothing happens the entire time. The fight goblins. And they are so weak. A team of 6 can barely fight off one goblin at the beginning. They get a little stronger. But nothing special. The magic is lacklustre. The fights are boring and short. I have nothing positive to say about it. I gave it a 4 because maybe someone will like it for the eternal cliffhanger of why they were brought there and from where. The art style is not to my taste either.

((Review: English - Español)) ** English= This is an out-of-the-ordinary isekai. It’s a show where the main focus isn’t action or adventure, but rather exploring the characters' fears, insecurities, and interpersonal struggles. On top of that, the animation is some of the best I've ever seen—I absolutely loved it, and it felt incredibly realistic. If you're looking for a slower-paced isekai that centers on the daily lives of the characters along with their insecurities and fears, I highly recommend giving it a watch. It’s just a shame there’s no new season on the horizon, because the anime was left incomplete. ** Español= Este es un isekai fuera de lo normal. Este es un Isekai donde la idea principal no es la acción ni la aventura, sino mostrar a los personajes en sus temores, insegurid…

Ill try not to spoil this show as much as possible. Grimgar is honestly a gem of its own. It doesnt try to be the run of the mill isekai where a person killed or transported by some entity to a world and they magically get the strongest ability. Grimgar as show is unique not only to itself but to the isekai genre as a whole. Its not just one person who gets transported, but an entire group of people, although we are not told how they were transported, all we know that they are stripped of their memories of the past world they lived in, and are forced to live this fantasy life without a clue of why and that their own goal is to survive as this isnt a dream but their new found life. Characters in this show dont do unrealistc movements and magically become powerful, we are actually shown th…

This anime stands out even among other Isekai titles, but honestly, I haven’t seen anything like it within this specific style before. It represents more of an Isekai 'Slice of Life' approach, perfectly depicting the actual life of adventurers. Unlike most series where the protagonist is 'OP' (overpowered), here everyone is a beginner, and they grow gradually. The character development and the synergy between the protagonist and his teammates are among the best I’ve seen. Each character starts as a typical trope, but as time passes, they break out of those stereotypes and evolve into something new. In the first season, the plot and the story were perfect. It had emotional depth, character growth, and world-building. Although we didn’t see a vast amount of the world, it was paced perfectly…

This anime is great and here is why: 1. The first eye catcher is the art style, which has a nostalgic vibe. Especially the backgrounds are beautiful and feel lively. The watercolor style remind me of Ghibli movies. 2. In comparison to other shows, nothing feels rushed. The pacing is so laid back it feels like a nice stroll through a park. While there are fight scenes, the story never forgets to show the characters having a proper meal, a casual chat, or a good rest. 3. The protagonists actually have to train and spend money to learn skills. They struggle just to maintain a stable life. None of them were born with an "overpowered" trick up their sleeves. 4. Even the lowest-ranking enemies aren't portrayed as mindless monsters, but as individuals who also want to survive. Throughout the…

I just finished my rewatch of Grimgar as I wanted to see if it was as good as I thought initially the 2nd time around. I am happy to report Grimgar is just as good as I remembered if not better from a second watch through as I missed a lot foreshadowed in the earlier episodes! Not only is the art amazing in this series but the way that they deal with pain, loss, and the strength to move forward is something to be admired. Overall this anime has a very interesting plot that I'm excited to continue with the LNs and very short lived manga. The characters dynamics work as a group and I love that no singular character in their party is stronger than another. It brings a good power balance to the isekai genre that is severely lacking. So in conclusion if you are looking for a realistic iseka…

Hai to Gensou no Grimgar, or Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash is one of those rare Anime that's in a class of its own. Your typical Isekai beginning, yet manages to do something that no other Isekai has done before. It's the only Anime I would ever rate 10/10. Based on Story, Visuals, Sound/Music, Animation and Characters. And it certainly excels at all of those. The characters are interesting, well drawn and well animated. Every scene feels special, like you're watching a unique painting each scene. Even the sound design for ambiance is amazing and compliments the scenes, the music is well made and fits in perfectly. The fighting scenes feel grounded in reality and are extremely well animated. Every swing of a weapon looks like it has actual weight to it. None of the characters ever feel lik…

This is how you make an Isekai. That's it. That's the peak of the formula. No overpowered MC. No "tragic gooner past" used for cheap drama. No cheesy harem, just normal mfs like us thrown into an uncaring world. The characters are raw, fearful, and their progress is painstakingly slow. Everything they gain is earned by sheer training or hard worked money. They struggle with doubt and grief, like we all do if realistically we were thrown in world like this that's why it makes their small victories feel monumental. They try. They doubt. They fail. But they prevail. If you are tired of generic Isekai shit, this series is mandatory. It makes us relate more to the main characters Except of you're a D1 gooner

Are They The Correct Goblin Slayers Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash Is despite its awful name, a pretty interesting Isekai, about team building and enemies really not wanting to die. at the heart of the anime there's the story about a little team of newbie Adventurer, that has to get together and learn to do teamwork to kill the Goblins. And it's done well, and a characters each have their personalities, that is maybe not the deepest, but is well characterized. the fights are good and interesting, they don't showed the enemies as harmless being, you kill to get XP, they have the will to survive and will fight to the last. The backgrounds are beautiful and always look stunning, and the character art is so pretty, despite not being the most detailed. all of the design of the anime is really w…

Story – 4/10 Grimgar sets out to portray a more grounded and emotional take on the fantasy genre, but it often feels empty. The pacing is slow, and the worldbuilding is minimal to the point of being confusing. While the premise had potential, most of the episodes feel like mood pieces rather than actual story progression. Characters – 4/10 The cast is balanced in terms of RPG roles, but their behavior doesn’t match their supposed training or the danger of their situation. They struggle with even basic coordination in combat, and their reactions to life-or-death encounters often lack intensity or urgency. There’s some growth over time, but it takes too long to get anywhere meaningful. Animation – 6/10 The watercolor backgrounds are beautiful, but the actual animation is limited. Combat la…

I am normally very critical of shows I am reviewing, and I go into depth on the issues the anime faces with production, pacing, artstyle, etc. None of that applies to Hai to Gensou no Grimgar, which has exceeded my expectations in every manner possible. I usually hold reservations and judgement for after I finish the show, unless it fails in obvious manners, but it was hard to not be excited moving into this show given the reputation it has in the culture. From the execution of its premise to the unflinching brutal reality faced by the characters, this show feels nothing like a conventional story / anime. We are taken along for the ride, able to witness how survivors manage to scrounge by, in a manner which I have not seen done this well before. My only gripe with the show is that the sh…

This isekai is totally different from what we have out there, although it is quite gradual in the story and I believe it could be a little more agitated and faster which would make the progress of the story more interesting, here the characters do not break the system with some "hack" like infinite power, innate ability, preservation of memories of the previous life, they were simply summoned and will have to fight and survive in this new world and that is a big difference, each character has their own personality and does not follow any kind of cliché, they are very humanized, for those who like isekai it is a mandatory anime and I hope there is a second season in the future and until then the deal is to read the manga

In short, this anime is an "okay" drama that got lost somewhere between shounen and seinen. Is it worth watching? Yeah, it is. A bit too ecchi for my taste, but still watchable. The art design is really pretty, but the animation itself is nothing special—just "okay." As for the story, it focuses more on relationships than on fights. And even though grinding plays a role in the plot, it's mostly used as a dramatic element. Since it’s an anime that emphasizes relationships, you’d expect better character development. You can tell there’s an effort to make that happen, but it’s not very effective—at least not in the beginning. The anime does get better in the second half, especially in the final episodes. If it keeps the same pace as the ending of the first season in future seasons, I’ll keep…

I said it before and I'll say it again. I'm not the greatest when it comes to reviews, so this won't go into details. 1. The production of this anime is exceptional. Kudos to all involved. 2. Great music, great animation. So glad that I bumped into it. Thoroughly enjoyed watching it. 3. Plot is a bit weak and conversations between characters feel like they drag a bit too long serving no purpose to the story. 4. If it was a bit more substantial, I would gladly give it a 10. There was a lot of potential. It's a shame it stopped. I'd love to see a new season with more action.

This anime is a masterpiece in general Characters: The focus in this show are about the MC and the weak party he’s in, facing real adversities The character development is refreshing especially for the MC, we felt his growth through trial and error and made him feel authentic and real. They all have their own clear weaknesses, strengths, doubts, fluctuation of self-esteem and because of that they naturally rely more on the leader of the party All of these elements make us relate to them which is something crucial for human connection, they had to slowly discover how to balance out their strengths and personality, it still often fall short as teamwork is about coordination and not about individual strength. It’s like making a pizza and they each add one ingredient with another but at th…

First of all, it's really weak as an anime. Boring dialogues, meaningless conversations, and poor environment design are all points that discourage you throughout the anime. But most importantly, the wrong choice of voice actor for the main character. The main character, Haruhiro, is a young boy with an average physique, while the voice chosen for him is a relatively mature voice suitable for young people with a larger physique and older age. This inappropriate choice makes it impossible for you to feel a connection with the main character throughout the anime, and the inconsistency of this voice with the character bothers you. Perhaps if this were not the case and a voice actor suitable for the character's appearance was chosen, it could cover the other weaknesses that I mentioned at the…
