Gurren Lagann

Gurren Lagann

Introduction

Simon and Kamina were born and raised in a deep, underground village, hidden from the fabled surface. Kamina is a free-spirited loose cannon bent on making a name for himself, while Simon is a timid young boy with no real aspirations. One day while excavating the earth, Simon stumbles upon a mysterious object that turns out to be the ignition key to an ancient artifact of war, which the duo dubs Lagann. Using their new weapon, Simon and Kamina fend off a surprise attack from the surface with the help of Yoko Littner, a hot-blooded redhead wielding a massive gun who wanders the world above. In the aftermath of the battle, the sky is now in plain view, prompting Simon and Kamina to set off on a journey alongside Yoko to explore the wastelands of the surface. Soon, they join the fight against the "Beastmen," humanoid creatures that terrorize the remnants of humanity in powerful robots called "Gunmen." Although they face some challenges and setbacks, the trio bravely fights these new enemies alongside other survivors to reclaim the surface, while slowly unraveling a galaxy-sized mystery. I want to say that the story of this anime isn't something you should take too seriously or try to find logic in, because at some point it feels like the anime itself is telling the viewer, "Forget about logic and just watch." And honestly, the story isn't complicated on the surface either. We have giant robots fighting each other, but what makes Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann such an entertaining show is the energy and excitement that it has in every episode. The further it goes, the stranger and more ridiculous everything gets. The robots get bigger, the fights get crazier, the characters get more energetic, even emotions like love reach their peak, and it feels like everything just keeps getting more and more epic. There's a lot of exaggeration in this anime, but that same exaggeration is w…

[Hood Review] WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM!? (You will understand later) So when I first started watching this anime, I’m not gonna lie it was extremely rough. It felt like a typical old-school anime, and it’s hard going from newer anime like 2021 and up, then trying to jump back into something older. The animation definitely took some getting used to. But once I got around episode 8, I was hooked. The anime has a different twist to it, and even though I’m not really into mecha anime like that, the storyline was actually super good. It’s extremely fast-paced, but even with everything moving so quickly, I still ended up loving the characters. The character development for the main protagonist was extremely well done, and you actually get attached to the characters as the story progres…

It was an absolute peak of a show. I won’t say I’ve never seen anything like this before, because I’ve seen similar shows with that never-give-up mentality, but Gurren Lagann has its own unique way of showcasing everything. It’s incredibly fun to watch and has some crazy-good action scenes. The animation is amazing. Gurren Lagann has a bold, energetic animation style that focuses more on expressive movement, exaggerated poses, dramatic camera angles, and powerful impact than realistic or perfectly consistent drawings. Its animation can shift from simple and comedic to rough, intense, and highly detailed during action scenes, giving each sequence a strong sense of personality. The mecha battles constantly push the sense of scale and spectacle, while the dynamic movement and creative visual…

Gurren Lagann in a nutshell is a very fun anime with some great action and animation. I’ve never been the biggest fan of mecha anime but this one does distinguish itself from the rest, mainly regarding the mechs they use and the mechanics that come with it. The story is pretty simple, in a nutshell the human race live underground, and a pair of guys named Simon and Kamina breach through to the surface where they meet a girl Yoko and are faced with enemies called Beastmen. The story is executed pretty well, without giving too much away, the story is split into two major parts and I enjoyed both of them. The ending of the first part had me shook and I didn’t expect it. The main villains of both parts of the story Lordgenome and the Anti Spiral were also engaging villains. However, the firs…

Went into watching this with great expectations, considering the generally very high opinion on the anime. I was sorely disappointed. The first half of the series is as bog standard as a battle syônen as they come, with the whole shebang of supporting cast, villain, conflict, and the lot. It is not meant to be demeaning, in fact this part is what carries the score for the anime, and up to its first resolution of the underlying conflict, it is pretty enjoyable. It even has more lighthearted moments that help with the pacing and with easing a little the tension; the humour is in general what you can expect for the genre, but it kind of works overall. The problem lies in the second half. Throughout the second half of the series, any possible tension there could be left is dead and gone. Any…

I really don't like battle shounen. And I like mecha even less. However, a fansub group had bothered to make a fan translation of this old anime in my obscure language and took its name from it, so I thought it might have something in it. Expected battles in some apocalyptic wasteland, and perhaps some buried mystery akin to Fallout. The vaults, that is, the underground villages, were explored less than I had hoped for, but the backstory managed to surprise. So wow. Just wow. This anime managese to surpass itself, and then surpass itself even more, and then surpass itself even more, multiple times again. Indeed to drill through the ceiling. And there is also laugh factor and memorable quotes, as the intensity is insane. It's not good per se, but the wow factor and jaw opening factor i…

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is about everything that is good about humanity. Its about fighting back against oppressors, that even from humble beginnings you can create something great. Its about following in the footsteps of the people that are lost along the way. Its about doing whats right, even if the right decision is the hardest one. Its about a better tomorrow, taking one step forewards so our children can take two. Everything that Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann stands for is admirable. Progress is what humanity is designed for. Progress will always defeat anything that tries to reverse it. Life should be united in the maintenance of life. For families, friends, society, comrades, and those who have fallen. If life can continue than it should, and its everyones responsibility to he…

Gurren Fucking Lagann. What a show this was. This is truly 2000s anime at its peak. Great (and funny) fan service, INCREDIBLE animation, inspiring story (but not corny) and seriously one of the best endings to an anime I've ever seen. You can separate this into 2 halves, the first one was solid, good but nothing mindblowing. The second half takes this show into another stratosphere and the last 4 episodes are just kino. In my opinion, the best mecha show ever made. The cast is great, and for a show that's supposed to be a "simple shounen" the character development is really good, not just the main characters, but the side characters too. My only complaint with this show would be I wanted more romance, after the first half there really isn't that much romance, which I think could have str…

A beautiful show about determination, perseverance, and standing up to oppressive forces. If you want 26 episodes of a show that you'll cherish for years to come, where the only thing as memorable as the cast, is the beautiful soundtrack. The pacing is amazing too, i never found myself bored, but never felt overwhelmed. The art style is a solid 8/10, and every eyecatcher gives me an urge to screenshot it and use as a wallpaper. A lot of the Mech designs will seem weird or goofy at first, but a few episodes in, they'll grow on you. I recommend this show even more if you are in a stage where all you watch are depressing shows, i watched this right after I read "The Horizon" by Jeong, Ji-Hoon, and it left a great impression on me since then.

Quick review here; It's hard to describe this anime. As a first thought I would say: it's a big hit or miss. Nowhere inbetween. If you can turn off your critical thinking and give yourself up to the tsunami of feelings which Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann will give you, waste no time and watch it. This anime is from a much simplier time, where screaming big words, and the clash of two gigantic titans made everyone smile. Similarly to JoJo's, some of those 'big words' will be reused so many times, they becomse iconic, instead of staying laughing matter. The characters are over the top. Extreme, but not clishé. Same goes for the story, in a world with many big, empty spaces for the battle of titans. Sometimes it gets darker, but never looses it's composure, never. Happiness goes up and down, a…

It is not perfect, I of course have my gripes on it, but no show, anime, whatever is. What it is is an amazing action story that ties everything up in a neat little bow, which not many can do. It has shallow lows and extremely high highs, which not many animes are, all which make me believe it is deserving its flowers, 9.4/10! Gurrenn Lagann though a little rocky at times has a beautiful art style befitting of the light-heartedness and later positive theming the story holds and is a show that has applicable themes and plot to everyone into which 99% of the population can find enjoyable.

[EN/PT-BR] [EN] "My drill is the drill that creates the heavens" Epic battles, incredible animation, funny moments, memorable characters, and an excellent finale in space. Find out if I'm talking about "Kill la Kill" or "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann." Due to the huge amount of mecha anime that exist, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find one that acts in this genre and is authentic. Gurren Lagann is a great example that it's possible to pilot a giant robot and be original about it. Whether it's its gripping story, memorable characters, or jaw-dropping transformations, the anime excels in each of these aspects and keeps you entertained with the insane fights. The fights, being the main focus of the anime, are impeccable. The tension of seeing a more powerful enemy, the gratifying…

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is one of my favourite anime series, and it remains that way after re-watching. Here's what I loved about the anime: STORY (10/10) - Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann has a unique premise in the mecha anime genre. - Humans living underground while the surface is controlled by humanoid CREATURES is a premise unheard of in mecha anime. - Both of its story arcs are among the best-written in anime. - The first story arc develops the world-building and characters of the anime series, while already offering fast-paced action scenes that are very exciting and among the best in anime. While maintaining a light-hearted tone, it also dealt with real issues such as loss and depression. - The second story arc of the series is one of the best-written story arcs in anime. It is set…

Gurren Lagan is the anime that dared to ask "what if hype moments and aura also had good writing?" It seems we'll never know. I only picked up this show because I had multiple friends insisting it was peak, only to find out after dropping it that all of them had the same experience of getting around 15 episodes in and dropping it because it was boring as shit. And yeah, I did that too! Gurren Lagann is a show that tries to be many things (character focused action, political thriller, post-apocalyptic brawls) but the only one that ends up being consistent is just cool fighting for the sake of cool fighting. And don't get me wrong, I'm fine with a good fun series, JoJo is my second favorite anime. The issue I have with how GL tackles this is that it also very clearly tries to go for a well…

I’m not usually into these type of genre’s in the anime, but after hearing great things, I watched this show all the way through and it was amazing. At first, it seems like a typical battle with machines on a barren landscape, but halfway through, everything changes. The story explores deep, relatable themes with a mix of lightheartedness and intensity. The ending was so powerful it almost moved me to tears. The core message is clear: willpower and love are stronger than you think. If you’re unsure at the start, stick with it, things get intense. With an ending so satisfying and bittersweet giving you the proper closure you needed for letting go of such a perfect experience. If you haven't watched it do so now.

Possible the best piece of media I have ever seen. From the characters to the visuals such a unique blend of goofy yet master class writing, one helluva ride through and through, amazing story beats and some of the best battle scales I've seen in an anime. The visuals of this anime are fucking amazing, the mech designs are so incredibly unique and each of them have a good amount of charm to them so they aren't copy and paste unlike many other mech animes, the designs of Gurren laganns different forms is never underwhelming and always a peak point within the story, and not to mention the last form which I wont spoil BUT GODDAMN The stories way of showing human perseverance through the writing mixed with the literal combining of mechs and people for more "Spiral" power is one of the best…

I'm a changed man...this anime gave me the hope to live to achieve my best instead of rotting in depression or vanity... Kamina defined the indomitable human spirit to believe in urself...and Simon brought that to his reality... Sometimes we lose our reason to live...desires, relations, existential crisis lol.... This anime gave me hope just to live in the present to try my best and believe in others and myself... Not all the goals we chase and the relations we believe in may not end great just like the story tells but the way we do it matters the most. "Believe in the you that believes in yourself"...Keep living on holding onto that spirit and effort!!

Absolutely overrated. Before I get into women-centric views, let me address the glaring inconsistencies and poor writing decisions. First. The first half and the second half are completely different shows. Sure they have the same vibe and art and cartoon logic and setting but too many characters take shit turns in their direction for the sake of melodrama. There's a guy who was more or less the same as Simon in terms of mental state but somehow after a seven year time skip became a brooding pragmatist even though he experienced the exact same things as the rest of the team and the exact same talk no jutsu as everyone else did at the end of the first half; the funny glasses girl (who was mere eyecandy as a sister to the Kamina spinoff) is his diehard simp for NO REASON. The very convenient…

Gurren Lagann is a wild, over-the-top, and emotionally charged anime that grabs you by the heart and punches through the ceiling with sheer determination. It starts in an underground village with a timid boy named Simon and quickly escalates into a galaxy-spanning battle of wills, spirit, and mechas. What makes Gurren Lagann so memorable is its relentless energy and larger-than-life attitude. Every episode seems to top the last, with increasingly insane battles, stirring speeches, and an unforgettable cast. Kamina is the definition of hype, and Simon’s growth from a scared kid to a true hero is genuinely inspiring. Visually, it’s a treat—vibrant, chaotic, and stylized in all the right ways. The soundtrack, especially “Libera Me from Hell,” is iconic and perfectly matches the show's inten…
