Kotarou wa Hitorigurashi (Kotaro Lives Alone) is an anime that quietly pulls at your heart. It looks cute and light at first, but it slowly reveals deeper emotions without ever feeling overwhelming. Even when it touches on sad themes, it somehow still feels warm and comforting. Kotaro himself is honestly amazing. Seeing such a small kid live on his own is heartbreaking, but what really gets me is how determined and independent he is. The people around him, especially Karino and the neighbors, may not be perfect, but their growing care for Kotaro feels natural and real.
Also, I dont understand when people hate it and use the words, "This kid is 4 years old, it's not realistic" It's not supposed to be realistic. That's the point. The anime isn’t trying to be super realistic—it’s more about…

If you're looking for a slice of life anime, this one is definitely a decent choice, lots of cute moments between the characters while also adding in moments that are rather bittersweet in between. My friend and I enjoyed it a lot when watching the show and it's definitely rewatchable. Watching Kotarou and how he interacts with the adults around him was also nice, just giving perspective into how he views the world and vice versa with the supporting cast.
With the art, I did enjoy it, not really mind the sharp edges as the art style feels more unique in it's own way. Only thing that was jarring for me was the eyes on some of the characters though it was easy to get past it while watching the show. I do wish the show did a bit more of showing and not telling though as sometimes it feels li…

If you like comforting slice of life animes you’ll like this one! it’s pretty interesting too, watching him learn about different aspects of life.
The art style is pretty good and the characters all have some sort of development based on their relationship with Kotaro. It is a little bit sad at times but i’d say it’s more bittersweet than anything. Kotaro is a pretty smart cookie for a 4 year old.
Kids will love this show too my 1 year old niece was glued to the laptop whenever I put it on! Kotaros strength is probably his unusual intelligence for being so young and karinos is definitely how unexpectedly caring he can be at times. I think the art style is very cute and fitting for a story like this one! If you’re considering watching you should definitely do so!

Kotaro Lives Alone depicts as a character-driven exploration of childhood resilience, loneliness, and the small victories of human connection. The story centers on Kotaro Satō, a four-year-old boy living alone in a rundown apartment. Despite his tender age, Kotaro exhibits an extraordinary level of independence. He pays rent, cooks simple meals, and navigates daily life with meticulous care. This setup creates a narrative where precociousness and subtle humor meet poignant reflections on trauma and isolation. The narrative gradually reveals Kotaro’s backstory, hinting at familial loss, neglect, and a past filled with emotional hardship. Interactions with neighbors, particularly Shin Karino, a struggling manga artist, provide moments of warmth and human connection. Other residents of the ap…

It's boring. It's cringe. It's just bad. Worst and the most boring anime I've ever watched.
It's supposed to have comedy and it's supposed to be sad. Guess what? It's neither. The mc is boring and really ungrateful to the people around him. He makes me cringe. Wasted my time watching this. It's supposed to be sad because he is all alone and his parents don't care about him and he wants to live alone and be independent. His way of trying to be independent is cringe. I saw this rating and went in expecting something good but all I got was a bs show.

One day, manga author Shin Karino is greeted by four-year-old Kotarou Satou, his new next-door neighbor, who gifts him a box of tissues. In Karino's eyes, Kotarou is an odd kid: he speaks in an extremely formal manner, and he lives alone in his apartment—no parents or relatives in sight. But Kotarou neither seems to mind, nor wants to rely on people.
Feeling sympathetic toward Kotarou's circumstances, Karino decides to follow Kotarou to a bathhouse in case something might happen to him and there he comes to understand the little boy is not so different from him. Little by little, Karino—along with the other residents of the apartment complex—grows fond of Kotarou and his antics. At the same time, Kotarou himself might have found something akin to a family in his unique neighbors.

This anime is a good starting point for long time anime watchers who have stopped watching anime for a while. Kotaro lives alone has a relax and cozy pacing in terms of storyline, character development not much but there is some growth in the main characters. For me, the main themes of this show are found family and neglected children. If anything I wished the anime didn't end and has a second season, it has the same vibes as Gakuen Babysitters but not as much cutesy. I recommend watching this for a good cry.
The storyline is quite unique as it's not everyday you follow the life of a 4 year old who is really quite self aware, it is a tad bit unrealistic for a 4 year old to be this smart. However the situations that were presented in the show was quite realistic and some viewers might eve…

I’ve decided to write my first review on this show because I think just putting a 10/10 doesn’t do it justice. This show resonated with me so deeply and I am sitting here crying and thinking about it.
Here are some reasons for why you should watch this show:
- I am someone who works with younger kids for my job. This was such a refreshing view on the intelligence of children, because they are so much smarter than people give them credit for.
- The small and subtle ways that outsiders can detect abuse in the home is important and I think this show touches on a few of those signs really well.
- The main supporting cast is so well thought out and I really enjoyed how different they all are
- I am such a sucker for the “found family” trope
- It tackles serious subjects regarding people of…

"Kotarou wa Hitorigurashi" is about a 4-year-old kid living alone and interacting with his community. At first glance, it seems like an ordinary slice-of-life anime, but it actually delves into themes of domestic violence, broken families, and child neglect.
What's special about this work is that the author doesn't depict the domestic violence directly to shock the audience. Instead, the story hints at heartbreaking reasons behind the child's strange behaviors while living alone. This subtle approach is more challenging because the author needs a deep understanding of an abused child's psychology to create convincing plot points. Therefore, I think it's a remarkable piece.
Initially, I dropped the anime after the first episode, thinking it was just a funny slice-of-life show and it's not…

I initially went into this anime expecting something lighthearted—a fun, silly slice-of-life series that I could casually enjoy. And to be fair, it absolutely delivers on that front with plenty of charming and humorous moments. The animation style, quirky characters, and playful tone give the impression that you're in for a feel-good experience.
But what completely caught me off guard was the emotional depth woven into the story. Beneath the surface of laughter and whimsical day-to-day interactions lies a profoundly touching narrative that carries real emotional weight. It’s not just heartwarming—it’s heartbreaking in ways I wasn’t prepared for. There were moments that genuinely left me in tears, and I found myself thinking about certain scenes long after the credits rolled.
Kotaro, the…

This shows somehow triggers PTSD most of which never happened but yet somehow relatable. It's a story about a child filled with mental scars as if his whole existence is a scar to himself.
This is my first time writing a review and am not gonna just give individual ratings on art style, animation, characters etc. But the overall rating would be undoubtedly a solid 10/10 (laugh all you want, but I'm not gonna be a cheapskate). The story that revolves around Kotarou Satou, an alone, neglected, strong willed, kind and caring child. This show reflects the dark side of family feuds, it shows just how traumatizing child abuse, negligence etc. can be . A child filled with scars of traumas living alone and yet being caring and showing empathy than most of the adults is so saddening and sometimes…

First: childcare along with slice of life genres are basically far enough to make one happy.
Story: pretty emotional story plot along with all the cutest moments that one could have with children
Characters: first preference is karino, bcz he's pretty honest at his career with manga. Next sure is kotaro the way he address everyone with sir and lady regardless of same or above age people. Respect, fun, humanity, kindness, love everything is explicitly beautiful in this story .
Episodes: I just finished this anime in one week but worthy of all the 10. None of the episode is lagging or boring..everything is very much into it. At the last episode I never wanted to end as like every other favorite anime yet this one has a twist bcz kotaro had taught me one thing today, 'no matter how much eve…

This is my first review on MAL. This show deserves that. My wife and I were looking for a change of pace anime to get away from the action of the other shows we had been watching. This is no doubt the best show we could have chosen for that. If you are an empathetic person or had hard times growing up, this show will make you cry just about every episode. The character development is great for there only being 10 episodes. I know a lot of people will probably hate on the animation style, I personally liked it. I would recommend this show to anyone.

Kotaro Lives Alone is a type of story I stive to write myself.
The loveable and sympathetic characters, how the dialogue means EVERYTHING no matter what a character says and the deep introspection the audience experiences (especially those who have experienced the same things as Kotaro) really highlight this anime.
Sure the artstyle is a bit odd but I like it, it sets it apart from other animes and adds a another layer to it!
If this show was animated like another animes it would have taken away from Kotaro as a character imo.
Because Kotaro is animated in such a striking, almost uncomfortable way (the eyes being a prime example) it makes you kinda forget Kotaro is very very young as we're so used to baby characters having a wide…

"Kotaro Lives Alone" is a rollercoaster of emotions that had me oscillating between the warmth of human connection and the chilling emptiness of solitude. It's rare for a series to evoke such a gamut of feelings, but this one managed to pull at every heartstring.
From the outset, the plight of Kotaro, a young child living on his own, is enough to break anyone's heart. Every episode drew tears from my eyes as I watched him navigate the challenges of loneliness, hunger, and the myriad hardships of his life. The depths of his resilience and vulnerability were both heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure.
Shin's character evolution was a highlight for me. His journey from an indifferent individual to someone who genuinely cares showcased the transformative power of empathy and human…

It may look like a childish anime, but it has a very deep meaning. Through Kotaro we begin to experience all of kinds of relationships, parenting and adulthood hardships and every kind of everyday life hardships. On the other hand it might feel like we are the main character Kotaro, despite being left alone he still finds happiness in life and positivnes in things. I think thats the main message of the anime, dont let other things or people ruin your day and despite all kinds of hardships, face it.
For the art it was very simple, because the emphasis was on the story.
I really recommend it to anyone, who wants to watch a quite short but cute anime, which has nevertheless deep meaning.

I came expecting all comedy, but turned out to be really different than what I was expecting
It really is a beautiful anime, it's an emotional, funny, adventurous journey of kotaro's daily life
kotaro might surprise you of how smart he is, sometimes you forget he's just a kid
I also know that some people may relate to kotaro which made this anime even better, to open people's eyes of things that can happen in real life, yes some people don't have a clue of these things and it's good that it has a nice ending
I also like how the story doesn't only focus on kotaro, yes the maun character is kotaro but they also showed that other people went through similar situations, it showed how each of these people made their choice and built their lives upon that choice
I also like hoe kotaro influ…

I just want to start off by saying i watched this when i was four months pregnant and had no idea i was four months pregnant, and after i found out, my reactions to this anime made SO much sense! I was seriously bawling my eyes out hard. And the heavy themes are even more poignant since Ive given birth to my own little boy. Yes the anime has some flaws and i just seriously cannot get behind the "one piece" ish art style the characters are so silly looking, but im really glad i got over it and gave it a chance. I dont need to get into it and break it down other reviews have probably already got that covered i just wanted to note this probably will hit harder if your a parent, or in my case, expecting! Its a good hindsight of children and what you should and shouldnt do to mentor one in your…

This was one of my first Slice of Life anime's I have watched and it peaked my interest from the preview that Netflix shows. This was one of the most enjoyable shows I have seen.
Story: 9
The story is a very heart-warming and enjoyable story with lots of loveable characters that have great storytelling behind each of them even with only 10 episodes in the season. The episodes are sort of split in two almost like two 15 minute shorts put into a 30 minute episode. The adventures and escapades of Kotaro and his neighbor Karino shows a side of society that most people forget about. The hardships kids and young teens go through when put into foster care and how they deal with not having parents. Doing things like going to school and seeing kids with parents while they themselves do not and ho…

This anime touches on heavy topics such as child neglect, abuse, and family estrangement while maintaining a veil of innocence. It gave increased purpose to the moments and scenes you would typically see in some slice of life anime. The four year old Kotaro moves in and the neighbors struggle to figure out why some kid is out here living alone without parents. As the characters grow and develop relationships with each other, we find out more about Kotaro's past, and how he draws on lessons and motivations of the past to move forward.
Enjoyment: I thought it was good overall.
Story: 6/10
Slice of life anime often struggle with story elements, but I thought the story was fine here. The unraveling of Kotaro's backstory as he builds relationships with other characters is engaging.
Art: 5/1…
