I was intrigued enough by the older iterations of Kyousougiga to see what they had come up for this series and wow is it extraordinary. The ambition and scope of the story alone is awe-inspiring, especially considering it's also well executed. I admit that while the first 6 or so episodes initially amused me, I was only somewhat above average in my enjoyment of the show. Then episode seven starts the crescendo, punctuated impressively by Koto's yell, climaxing during the final two episodes. Everything falls into place in episode eight, my favorite episode by far, and the payoff was absolutely immense. The somewhat mundane pace in the beginning was carefully crafted with a clear direction. It sets up your expectations and then blows them all away with a Koto punch to the gut. This show is a…

Kyousou Giga represents the abstract in many creative ways, particularly through its animation. The visuals are striking and imaginative, offering a unique experience that stands out in the medium. However, the story, to put it mildly, is very confusing. For example, why are there two characters named Koto? There’s no clear plot point explaining the significance of the Mother Koto or why her daughter shares the same name. It often feels like things just happen in this anime without any meaningful explanations to tie them together.
The Japanese voice acting is generally good, with most performances fitting their characters well. The exception, however, is the Chief Priest. His voice just doesn’t match his aesthetic at all, which creates a jarring disconnect. This anime reminds me of works…

One of the most bizarre and misunderstood shows you will ever watch, but watch you must because it is a wild ride. tbh, i originally watched the OVA/ONA of this show and didn't really get down with the story. But, when this show dropped, I decided to give it one more shot, and holy sh..t it did not disappoint.
I love how the story intertwines some of the earliest concepts of Japanese animation and create an entirely clever story.
One thing to note, if you have access to the accompanying live content where the ladies go around to the temples where the stories are suppose to take place, do yourself a favor and watch those. It really does help fill in the gaps on the smaller details that non-Japanese natives might not catch.

I am moved. Kyousougiga emulates so many works that I am deeply fond of. From Eva's unconventional character build-ups to FLCL's signature humour, adding in bits of Gainax's flair and even hints of Shaftism. But perhaps the most noticeable analogue is Ikuhara's Penguindrum. Not just in the way Kyousougiga swaps background characters with literal cardboard cutouts, but mainly in the themes it shares surrounding family and how, in the face of inexplicable ideas like fate or, in this case, divinity, that familial bond triumphs over all else. It's a confounding and conceptual but ultimately an immensely profound journey.
Kyousougiga firmly follows the idea that "rules are meant to be broken" both in the story and the series itself, to the point where it eschews conventional narrative structur…

All the babes in this anime already have boyfriends!
I can see how some people might be into Yase, but she has mommy issues, and is part demon so I would advise against asking her out if you value your life.
That pretty much leaves Shouko as most eligible bachelorette. Shouko’s dedication to her work may make her seem unapproachable, but I’d be willing to bet she’d be willing to go out with just about anyone if they could keep those kids out of her hair for a day. So there’s your in.
Kyousou Giga feels like a lot of care was put into making every aspect of it. I wanted to like it more than I did, but had a hard time motivating myself to watch it.
Found myself struggling to understand what I would later come to realize was a thin, relatively easy to understand plot that only seemed complica…

The experience of watching this anime was simultaneously beautiful and bizarre. Kyousougiga is dripping with gorgeous and imaginative art design, animation, and shot composition, all of which is bursting with color and life. Accompanying this, however, is a story that feels like a bewildering, disjointed mix of mythology and postmodernism that is akin to a raging bull which the viewer must somehow manage to cling to. In this way, it is hard to say much at all about this anime as a unified work, but it must be attempted regardless, even if it broadly defies analysis. Beginning with the story, it's almost impossible to choose a place to begin. The basis of this story is rooted in a mythological story structure, with the interactions of gods and spirits and the interplay of morality throughou…

This anime is a complete experience. I can only hope to gain something more than what this anime offers. Every aspect of it is impeccable, art by itself, flawless. The most important thing to me is the story and I think that that's the most difficult aspect to flawlessly deliver on, which this anime does, for me at least.
So, this is a masterpiece in my book. It reminds me of the anime Shiki and Shinsekai Yori because of the level of quality that the whole package that the anime is has. These three anime are different, but it can't get better than what this anime is, or those two are, there can only be variations in how the package of perfection is delivered, for me at least.
You know how with the real-life media what is provocative or negative is what's most often talked about because i…

Looking back at the reviews, I understand why it's score is what it is: on release, and for some time thereafter, it's visuals must have been breathtaking.
However, we've entered an era of animation such that, compared to what we have now, a lot of Kyousou Giga looks unrefined. It's still overall good and I enjoy the sound design and music, but it is no longer good enough to carry a show that is otherwise lacking.
To be honest, the plot is convoluted, the characters are interesting at first but undynamic in the long run, and instead of being on the edge of my seat as the mystery of their world unwinds as with Evangelion or Revolutionary Girl Utena, I just lost interest. I found watching the last two episodes to be laborious.
There are still many fantastic moments and some real gems o…

“Life, what is it but a dream?” - Lewis Caroll.
Kyousogiga is like that one random YouTube video that you get recommended out of the blue, yet you watch it out of spite and end up having the most wonderful time. It’s a story about family, love, home, loneliness, and life itself. And yes, these messages and themes are a dime a dozen in all of media, anime especially. But in every saturated medium, there will always be that one show that sticks out, one that genuinely is filled with passion, one that tries something different with itself, that is Kyousogiga. It might be a story told countless times, but here, it’s executed in a way unlike anything before. A great way to put it is: Kyousougiga is to stories about family and love, what FLCL is to stories about coming-of-age and adolescence.…

Kyousougiga is a very unique anime with lots of charm. It has the heart of a Miyazaki movie, visual boldness resembling Akiyuki Shinbo's works (think Bakemonogatari meets Madoka Magica), and a crazy story like... well, I can't even think of a comparison there. The story can be a little hard to follow in the beginning, but that's part of the intrigue. In every episode you gain a bit more insight to the characters and the world-building. I was also particularly impressed by the beautiful soundtrack that really enhances those emotional moments.
I could talk about the story, but I think it's better to go into this anime cold without knowing anything about it. The first couple episodes might feel like sensory overload with little making sense, but if you're patient I think the payoff is quite…

Story - To me it feels like one of those very anime-like stories I don't care for where it's less about the actual telling of events or actual things happening and more about having a scene where someone cries and feeling emotions. I just don't really jive with that kind of media so for me it just didn't do much. I didn't feel very attached to any of the characters, not that they were unlikable or bad but most of them are so one note or bland that I just didn't feel an attachment to them as people. A little more humanity all around would have helped elevate it a lot I think.
Art - The one thing this anime does quite well is show off a beautiful and consistent style. It makes me wish everything else was as good but it never felt like it cheapened out or had to cut things for budget. From b…

Kyousougiga really surprised me with how good it was, I honestly thought it was just going to be an ok anime with a really good art style that would be fun to watch for 10 episodes. But the anime delivered way more than I expected it to especially within 10 episodes, definitely worth the watch.
It's not the typical shonen anime that people normally watch either, it's surprisingly unique even for an anime and the world building/ characters you meet in the show are all very well written and enjoyable. The sound track is the only thing that I don't think is 100% perfect but honestly I'm just nitpicking because all of the tracks from the show are perfect for what they're meant to be, it's just that there aren't any super memorable songs.

This anime is a hidden gem. Not very popular because its meaning is missed in the world of religious illiteracy.
Any person who has dived into the occult, even minimally. may understand the purpose and motives of the characters. It ultimately seeks to motivate the human to imbue his own presence with a forgotten angst amidst the great field of wonders, the cosmos.
You will see inside, 'the Watchers' from the Book of Enoch and several other angels. The 13th plane which is revealed from the get-go as the Mirror World, is an analogy of physical existence. The 13th Archangelic Order which was supposed to be Archangels with knowledge of good and evil, who would inherit the Earth, is... us. Our lives can be a stepping stone between demon and Buddha... which one will we become? The answer is with…

Long story short, this show could have been made into a movie with all the fluff cut out.
It really does feel like Kyousou Giga is basically a person saying "well, what if we made this movie into a 12 episode show?" The story is super dragged out, long winded, and incongruous.
We are told the backstory of everyone's past, as if they actually mattered to the show or story at all. It's quite fascinating how little world building there is and how much the story is about diving into the past. Plus, the characters in the show aren't exactly made with depth. You could sum up their personalities quite quickly, to be honest. So why would I care about their past? The story progresses at a pace in which they don't ever reach a point of me caring about the character and the story also never reache…

I've had this anime on queue on cr since pretty much forever, I intended to watch it until someone mentioned it had similarities to Mawaru Penguindrum, which I hated because it felt shallow and had lots of tropes I dislike, and consequentially dropped. Well, so just to start, no they are not similar at all, and I wish I had watched it earlier (beware of recommendations, I guess?).
Story: This is a story of a family and the bond between them. A story about growing up, accepting responsibility, learning to love yourself and let others stand by your side. And monsters.
I've seen several reviews mention the plot is convoluted, which I don't think it's the case. It's just that the storytelling is non-linear, so you get flashbacks and revelations, but they all make sense and a…

Kyousou Giga. The most bizarre family complex anime of all time. Started as one of the most confusing anime ever, but then ended up as an anime that's so simple. Kyousou Giga is like when you forget something that you're not supposed to forget, so you feel like shit, but then you remember it when it's already too late. But since it's not that important, you feel relieved and shit at the same time for forgetting something so simple.

Kyousogiga is a family drama that juxtaposes Buddhist folklore and mythology with a colorful, urban fantasy setting. The resulting world is similar to Uchouten Kazoku's, though Kyousogiga is much louder and more action-oriented. It tells a non-linear story of an unusual family whose children live in a state of arrested development--both literally and figuratively--due to abandonment by their parents, and the ways in which they cope with their purposeless lives. It takes a chaotic, un-self-aware youth stumbling into their home to break them out of their stupor, and shake up the hermetic fantasy city that they live in. Ultimately, Kyousogiga's message is a little too ham-fisted, and its emotional conclusion is a bit over the top, but the ride there is thoroughly enjoyable thanks to explosive…

OBVIOUS SPOILERS BELOW
I’ve been trying to vary things up with my reviews recently – moving away from the general discussion of music, character plot in a formulaic fashion. Thankfully, all these elements of Kyousou Giga has been discussed to death in these reviews, so I’m going to diverge and talk a bit about what I do and don’t like in this show – any of those more detailed elements are otherwise easily found. I should also clarify that this is largely a criticism. Kyousou Giga is quite positively reviewed, and the majority of the popular reviews here fail to identify some of its major weaknesses – something I hope to address here.
First of all, looking at the narration, I’ve got to recognize the nonconventional (and nonlinear) style. It’s no mystery that I’m a fan of nonchronological…

Dammit anime industry, why are you sabotaging yourself like that?
Kyousougiga could have been a show ranking alongside highly acclaimed titles such as Tatami Galaxy, or Furi Kuri. It had the themes, the budget, the set-up, and the liveliness to achieve greatness.
… And messed it all up.
First things first; the 2013 version is a remake of the older one from the previous year. No reason to watch that one, other than scratching your head with Toei doing 3 versions of the EXACT same thing so close to each other (since there is an even older single episode set in the same universe).
Upon watching THIS version, be prepared to see 90% of the plot in the first episode. I am not kidding; the first episode is basically one huge infodump; introducing a cast of a dozen people, a bizarre setting whe…
