First off, the trigger warning about physical and mental health at the beginning of the anime is totally real... at least for the first 3 to 5 episodes or so.
At first, a lot of people probably won't like the anime because it tells the harsh truth about how so many die-hard fans of certain works or people actually feel. It’s cruel, and it hits the nail right on the head so hard that a lot of people feel called out and see themselves projected in it to the point that it hurts. But I feel like that's the whole point of the early episodes, and it does it perfectly.
Now, the second part focuses more on the characters themselves, their personalities, and their backstories. I think for many people, this is where the anime’s score drops—it definitely doesn't deserve a 10 anymore. The "streamer…

Listen, I'm the biggest defender of so-called "pretentious" shows. For Evangelion, Tatami Galaxy, and Monogatari, I'll be like that meme of the soldier in front of a child in a bed being pierced by a rain of armaments. But Needy Girl Overdose, maybe in some sense superficially similar to those shows, misunderstands everything that made them actually good. It's an experimental and avant-garde show because for the first time in the anime industry they let a 14 year old write the script. And maybe even then it'd be an insult to avant-garde art to be used on a show as vapid and empty as NGO.
The average NGO episode follows a formula of establishi…

Animation and all the dopamine hitting things were cool but my
oh my
whoever wrote the christianity symbols is clearly someone who does not understand or know much about Christianity !!
it's like no wonder the characters are written that way...
look it may have not been for someone like me that is religious and actually believes theres God
but i have to say if your gonna write a story about whatever and want to put negativity towards Christianity you have to know your research first..
I never write a review but it amazes me that show made by these producers and hosted by these studios can be created when the writing twist things or just simply gets things wrongs with Christianity.
Someone wrote a better review then me saying the same thing if you haven't read that one.
You wouldn't real…

what a total disappointment.
there were some really good scenes in a few episodes that were more ame focused, and the visuals for most of the show were okay.
i genuinely hated the karamazov polycule by the end of it. i wanted to give the 3 new characters the benefit of the doubt, their designs were ok, but this whole over the top kpop performer type vtuber streamer collab group competition bs really is genuinely just so dumb. completely uninvested me in the plot and it really deviates from the game too much. guess im an oldhead hag like kangel now but it really is just not for me.
nechika was a real nothingburger, denpa loli got extremely annoying (she was better out of her costume pre streamer life), and michika came off as really pretentious. kaches character was totally wasted too, a…

I remember wondering if I should actually watch this one, somewhat worried if it would simply ride off the name of the game. Fortunately, that was not the case.
I don't actually think it's a show about being famous on the internet or being a performer, per se, which is actually good! It's more about the psychology and thoughts behind the idea of the people we idolise, the way people navigate power structures, and what it truly means to be different.
Are we to depend on people with power until we can get enough for ourselves and use it? How much worth does the bold-faced hypocrisy of unhappy "self-sufficient" people have if it allows them to bring happiness to others? How can their words mean more than an illusion if they do not adhere to them themselves? Is the answer to be found in othe…

Needy Girl Overdose is a show that is fascinatingly bad, which in the world of anime is its own sort of backhanded compliment. Every season there is a tidal wave of the same dull shows doing the same dull thing, and most are skippable or droppable for the same reason we chose to skip or stop watching paint dry. NGO is absolutely not like that–it loudly and boldly finds innovative ways to be awful, to a point where it achieved an infamous spot on my list: the sub-4s that I actually finished instead of dropping.
The strange thing is that on paper this is the kind of show I should love. Avant garde psychological artsy-farsty shows with a strong directorial style are my bread and butter. Two of my favorite shows of the past five years are Sonny Boy and Shiboyugi, and those shows get the same…

This show takes a while to get going, but once it's going it goes good. A lot of the messaging is what you make of it, with the show effectively having two main ways to interpret it. If you consider the streamers as streamers, and listen to the commentary about the differences between normal people and those who they idolize, and the pressures that come with it before the show pivots into implying that it really isn't that much harder for the average person then I'd say it's alright. Not really a message that needs to be said, but a good show with fun characters and imagery. However, if you interpret the streamers as instead just being mentally ill then the story works a lot better. Positioning the streamers more as outsiders, because they are, and interpreting the thematic messaging more…

The show is so mired in symbolism that it's difficult to understand how much is/was real, how much is metaphor, and how much never happened. This is further complicated by how insistently the show references obscure philosophy and media that most viewers have never even heard of, let alone read/watched/listened to. This ambiguity isn't executed well and there's never any payoff to it. Eventually, you just accept that when reality gets all warped and characters enter another meta discussional space, you may as well just tune it out because it'll probably never be clarified — and they often weren't.
These frequent scenes seem to exist just to lecture the viewer. In fact, the bare-bones plot is a slave to these meta spaces, and seems to exist just as a vehicle to drive the viewer to the next…

This is one of those anime where you’ll either be completely on board or absolutely hate it. There really isn’t much middle ground.
If you’re looking for a coherent, straightforward story, this isn’t it. The series becomes increasingly meta and abstract, often prioritizing symbolism and psychological themes over conventional storytelling. It also deliberately pushes the boundaries of what many viewers will find comfortable.
Content warning: the anime contains explicit depictions and discussions of suicide, sexual assault, and self-harm. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.
I enjoyed it for what it was, but I completely understand why others would dislike it. It’s a very polarizing series, and whether it works for you will depend almost entirely on your tolerance for experimental story…

I have never disliked a show enough to write a review until now. Let me try and answer a few questions you may have on wondering if you should watch this or not.
1 ~ I liked the NSO game and KAngel. Is this show about that?
-> No. It is "about" (really the show isn't about anything and nothing happens) these 3 caricatures of denpa/otaku subculture being rich and famous streamers and how much they know about the meaning of life and epic obscure references in place of original creativity. I could not, as hard as I try, over-emphasise how cringe these references are, since a solid like 1/4th of this show consists of references.
2 ~ Oh, well are they interesting characters? Do they grow and form relationships and change?
-> No. They lecture you about the same things the whole show, and in-bet…

Sparkling and chilling. Somewhere between a masterpiece and the worst experience of your life. But despite its aggressive surrealism and bubblegum-flavored misery, the story has a strong, consistent throughline of hope and compassion.
It also punches you right in the face a lot.
On paper, it might not seem like anything new. The series explores the messy, hideous, parasocial realities of streamers being used as icons of comfort and community, being vilified and idolized with all the same zealotry and senseless hatred we had in prior religions.
But this series goes deeper and darker than most other attempts I've seen on the topic. Listing trigger warnings would take a dozen paragraphs. It has everything that could possibly upset you, me, your uncle, or anyone else. It will inflict discom…

if you feel like youre emotionally 15 and into edgyslop laced with yamikawa aesthetic, this is exactly the anime for you. anime who is completely so wishy washy with their own ideals and always goes half ways addressing every issue ever. there's no story, there's no plot, there's no nuance. its all just shots of "wow this could be potentially cool" but the placing of the scene is so awkward. this anime is just reference after reference after reference after reference and carricature stereotype of people in humanity and internet. its a very one sided view thats filled with immaturity of someone who refuses to grow up (which makes sense how nyalra is like on his hazedenki blog lmao). having a character who wants to be a 'kid' forever by staying in the internet is one thing, having ALL charac…

when an anime adaptation of needy girl overdose was announced, my expectations were already relatively low. i was never a huge fan of the original game, precisely because it suffered from many of the issues that its fans insisted on treating as virtues. while the premise of exploring internet fame, parasocial relationships, mental health, and the constant quest for validation was interesting, i always felt the game was more concerned with crafting a striking aesthetic than with developing those ideas in a truly meaningful way. still, a part of me believed the anime might leverage the source material's inherent limitations and transform it into something more cohesive. after all, an adaptation doesn't simply have to reproduce its source; it can reinterpret, expand upon, and rectify its flaw…

I didn't believe this would turn out into a good adaptation, maybe I would if it was a short OVA, but I was still left disappointed.
My biggest problem with the NGO adaptation is that, not only is it not really an adaptation, but it fails at delivering anything.
This anime lacks direction. Seriously. It wants to be psychological, Idol, Romance, Mahou Shoujo?, Denpa and whatever is convenient but the end result is a mess that isn't sure what it wants to be.
The original game was a simple psychological experience focused on streaming culture, the problems of the internet and the unhealthyness of Ame.
The anime despite also having these, suffers from having them taking the backstage as they focus on making it a mediocre Idol drama and introducing a bunch of characters "Karamazov" that rea…

This is horrible. I questioned my own knowledge and understanding while watching this; it's really stupid. As a denpa fan and someone interested in literature, this anime feels like trying to talk to a 13 year old adolescent about life while their biggest problem is their crush rejecting them. I am fairly sure that the writer doesn't even know what they are talking about. some bits makes sense and are disturbing (not in a bad way, considering this is some sort of dark psychological anime), but its flaws are bigger than its good sides for me, so I cannot recommend it. There are way better denpa anime out there, go watch them. At least they make sense.
ps. I dont usually use mal, i just logged in to write a review so i dont add the things i watch here.

If you want to analyze an anime like you analyze English literature in high school, it’s a perfect anime for you. For my classical readers out there. This anime felt like reading Bleak House by Charles Dickens. Some will get it, some won’t, but for those who do get it, you’ll have to watch and interpret every single detail this show has.
Needy Girl Overdose is a representation of a video game focused on the dark side of social medias in general. If you have not played the game, I believe it’s still relevant to understand what kind of girl Ame is. I watched it, completely clueless to the lore of the game and couldn’t get into it at first because the characters are not likeable at all. We do get introduced to three new characters that compete against KAngel, and they’re a literal nightmare.…

I was really excited for this as a huge fan of the game but every week that went on I slowly realized, man there is really nothing valuable being said or added to any of the characters arcs aside from kache slightly. If i wanted to just be watching high people trip out I’d just do drugs with my friends. I have a hard time relating to any of them because they are just characters. Its like an edgy 13 year old tried to make something deep but cant see anything outside of their own problems. Theres no deeper exploration of any of the characters mental statuses and it all comes off as shallow and preachy. I dont even feel like rooting for the main group cause they feel so pretentious.

+ Very inspired visuals! The visual style and editing are a bit reminiscent of Studio SHAFT, where title cards and still frames are used as an unconventional means of communicating story information and character psychology.
+ Episode 3 is terrific, delving into Ame/KAngel's troubled childhood and showing how mentally unstable people become streamers in the first place.
~ Unfortunately, instead of focusing on the self-destructive tendencies of online streamers, the show is centered on a war for superiority between KAngel and streaming group Karamazov, which makes for a FAR less compelling story.
~ The writing completely falls apart in later episodes. Episode 9 devolves into a fist fight, whereas Episode 10 spends most of its runtime on a Shonen-style action scene. While action can be a fun…

I'd recommend playing the game or at least know the summary of it before watching this anime. Also, take note that it's quite a yapfest so you need to listen to the entire thing to understand the message it's trying to portray. Feel free to skip this one of you're not into that kinds stuff.

The message of Needy Girl Overdose is clear and straightforward. That one can never live alone without any connections. Having someone or something that reminds whenever you're going too far, that you have t. This is basically the tldr of what the series is trying to emphasize towards its viewers, and all i can say is that it was demonstrated quite well, not without any issues ofc. Mainly there's only 1 for me, perso…
