Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl

Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl

Introduction

Six months ago, Sakuta Azusagawa had a chance encounter with a bunny girl in a library. Ever since then, he's been blissfully happy with his girlfriend: Mai Sakurajima, that same bunny girl. However, the reappearance of his mysterious first crush, the now-adult Shouko Makinohara, adds a new complication to his relationship with Mai. To make matters worse, he then encounters a middle school Shouko in the hospital, suffering from a grave illness. Mysteriously, his old scars begin throbbing whenever he's near her. With Shouko's bizarre situation somehow revolving around him, Sakuta will need to come to terms with his own conflicting feelings, for better or worse. With a girl's life in his hands, just what can he do? [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I didn't go in with crazy expectations but I was a bit disappointed. I don't know, I suppose I've lost interest in the franchise but I'll keep watching. For me, the characters didn't feel as engaging this time around (tbh I lost a bit of interest after the first few arcs of season 1) but the situation was a difficult one that offered a lot of possibilities in terms of where things could go and in terms of drama. Just feels like the writer(s) have a lot of pretty good ideas but the end result could be better. I liked young Makinohara and I get that the idea is Sakuta doing all he can for a girl suffering in a tough spot, but the romantic drama to me always feels second place to everything else and not in a very good way. Just seems like a lot of moments could be made easier if he was open…

Story: This movie is about a girl named Shouko. She has an illness – an incurable one, I think – and the MC tries to save her. Sorry, I cannot go into detail because this is a spoiler-free review. Animation: The animation doesn’t need much explanation, good as usual. Music: In my opinion, it’s nothing outstanding. The music isn’t bad at all, just decent. Storytelling: Storytelling is by far the greatest strength of this movie. I think it’s way better than season 1 of the Anime. Characters: Very charming. Emotions were conveyed perfectly. The interactions between all the characters, mainly Mai and Sakuta, are realistic and natural. Of the three currently available movies, this is the best one. Go watch it!

This movie is what made the series go from a solid 8/10 to a 10/10 for me. Some might call it a tearjerker, but I still firmly believe this is the peak of anime, even six years after first watching it. It is just such a perfect addition to the story and an absolute emotional rollercoaster at that. Granted, a 10/10 is always gonna be irrational and something very personal, maybe even stemming from nostalgia or a weird personal connection to the show - and you can always find something to criticise - but for me, it definitely deserves it's spot on my Top 1. The story is absolutely amazing. Adapted from light novel volumes 6 and 7 (which are also so good!), this movie perfectly captures the source material. It very well might be confusing for some at first, but it really isn't that hard t…

Good lawdy, this movie takes the setup of the series that preceeds it to a whole new emotional level. To be honest, I had to restart this after the first half an hour because I really wasn't enjoying what they did with Sakuta's character on first watch. He felt a little different (less bold) from the series and it was messing with me. However, upon full rewatch this movie turned out to be absolute gold. Although the writing is a little less witty and humorous than the series is, they refocus all their plot strength towards tugging at your heartstrings instead. To be honest I was nearly in tears for a large part of this movie and for good reason. If you had any emotional attachment to the characters from the series then this movie is a rollercoaster! Anyways, in true Rascal fashion the wri…

I genuinely fell in love with this romance anime from the first season, Puberty Syndrome is a unique addition to the story as a break from the romance, even though first season is using this heavily I didn't mind it. And it only got better with this movie, it had everything, really. Everything about this was told perfectly, and I REALLY didn't exact that to happen with Mia, but it did and the way Sakuta fixe everything was really satisfying. Also I think it's important to mention that this was the first time I genuinely cried watching any type of movie or tv series, without forcing or anything, tears just started on their own and only then did I realize how great this movie actually was. In the end I also want to mention that, if it wasn't obvious by now, my expectations were blown away b…

Flabbergasted. Holy SHIT Never have I ever bawled my eyes to a movie before yet alone a series (i cried 5 times), I'm not a very emotional person in general, but this movie ABSOLUTELY BLEW ME AWAY! (also, I'll post a recommandation at the bottom, try that anime if you liked this movie just as much as I did) Where do I begin? It's been around 6 months since Sakuta met Mai, but Sakuta encountered something, his childhood crush. She practically saved his life, and inturn he "saved" hers I really don't want to spoil anything, if you go headfirst to this movie, you'll be blown away, PLEASE watch this movie after finishing the original 13 episode anime. my personal reviews character's and their developement: 10/10 art: 8/10 emotional impact: 10/10 pacing: 8/10 (probably the weakest part of…

This movie was incredibly emotional! Sakuta's character truly flourished in this movie, revealing a genuine human side to him. One of the greatest moments in the film is a challenge in which he struggles to decide whether to save Makinohara or live and be with Mai. This scene perfectly captures his inner conflict and growth, making me love his character even more after the show. On top of that, the film’s music and animation beautifully capture its emotional peaks. I can't lie, I almost cried multiple times during this movie, but still, the movie had a few things missing to execute that. The movie wasn't perfect, it felt rushed, especially by the ending, and the music didn't have enough emotional buildup to land as powerfully as they could have. Despite that, the story's theme of love, g…

To me, this felt like just another episode of the series—only this time, packed with a lot more crying. It wasn’t bad by any means, but as a movie, it felt a bit underwhelming. If you go in with high expectations, there’s a good chance you’ll leave disappointed. It’s better to treat it like an extended episode rather than a grand cinematic finale. That said, one thing worth highlighting is Sakuta’s character. In this movie, he comes off far more kind, mature, and self-sacrificing than how he was initially portrayed in the series. Still, in true Sakuta fashion, he ends up brushing it off and sticking with Mai-san, just as expected. In the end, it's classic Bunny Girl Senpai—emotional, grounded, and introspective. Don’t expect mind-blowing twists or climactic drama. Instead, expect a touch…

This was one of the first romance anime I ever watched, and while I’ve always appreciated it, I hesitated to give it a perfect score. For the last two years, I had it at a solid 9/10. But after rewatching it last weekend, I can confidently say—it’s the best romance anime I’ve seen. The TV series sets the stage beautifully, but the movie truly delivers. The emotional weight hits hard, and the feelings portrayed are both relatable and realistic. You can really understand the dynamics between the characters and watch their emotional growth in a way that feels genuine and powerful. The movie includes a few plot twists—some may see them coming, but they’re still executed in a way that keeps them impactful. Visually, it looks great, and the atmosphere carries the emotional tone perfectly. Ove…

I love so much the so-called Japanese virtual tourism, as well as any good quality work that allows me to experience it. Whether it's a video game like the well-known series Yakuza / Like a Dragon, of which I'm a big fan, or a good quality anime which is particularly capable of letting me feel like I just teleported myself into a beautiful Japanese modern city or rural town, it is always very welcome. If, in addition, this anime is also capable of sharing a plot that is based on slice of life, romantic emotions and feelings, while being set in the classrooms of those typical lovely Japanese schools, that seems to be the perfect candidate to become an all-time favorite title of mine. Even more, if this anime is set in a wonderful Japanese place like only Kamakura can be, a small seaside to…

- German translation below - Story: 15 % 8.5/10 The anime movie to the anime can clearly score with its story. There are highs and lows, it is emotional and not only rounds off the anime but makes it even stronger in terms of quality. At this point, unlike the anime, it is not a patchwork quilt but deals with an exciting and well-thought-out topic. The story lends itself to being gripped. Pacing / narrative flow: 20 % 8.5/10 The pacing is very good, there are both calm and fast-paced scenes. Nothing feels stretched or too short, the movie conveys the emotions very well. Animation: 15 % 7 /10 The animations are drawn exactly the same as in the anime, it doesn't differ visually from the anime. They are again quite pretty with their own charm but nothing breathtaking. Character depth:…

Well, this is my first review of an anime, please don’t be harsh😅. To be fair, I enjoyed original series a lot, but I didn’t expect the movie to be THAT amazing. I am not a big anime geek or something, so it’s hard for me to judge drawing. I enjoy watching anime once in a while. And a lot of them are romance anime, so I was prepared for somewhat loner MC, but it was a pleasant surprise for MC to be that interesting. I really loved this movie, the plot was actually amazing. It made me, a grown man, shad a tear, not even one, probably:). I really loved it, probably because of a lot of factors, but the music made the experience SO much better, more beautiful even. After all, this was a wonderful series. I watched it all in a single evening. Thank you for reading.

Watched this with my boyfriend from his recommendation and had to take 30 pauses to cry my heart out. wow. a real tear jerker. would recommend, really made me invested in the character's and i geniunely felt the emotions conveyed. such a unique story and uique set-up of the story, nice art style cool outfits. really teaches me a lot. each character has distinct personalities that made it interesting to follow. they were cool characters. wouldnt call it realistic since puberty syndrome is quite a fantasy idea. I think you'll really enjoy this series anyway, especially if u wanna cry/comtemplate life.

Ugh, I'm still trying to process my emotions after finishing this anime. I mean, what even is this show?! It's like a beautifully crafted puzzle that slowly destroys you from the inside out. I went in expecting a quirky rom-com, but what I got was a thought-provoking exploration of mental health, trauma, and the human condition. Sakuta's dry wit and Mai's adorable awkwardness had me hooked from the start, but it was the supporting cast that really stole the show. Futaba's complexity, Nodoka's vulnerability, and Tomoe's... well, Tomoe's Tomoe-ness - each character added depth to the story, making it impossible to look away. And that animation? Stunning. The way the show blended surrealism with reality was pure magic. But what really got me was the way the show tackled tough topics. I mea…

A Satisfying Conclusion “Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl” serves as a poignant coda to the anime series, effectively wrapping up the narrative. Despite the ongoing source material, this movie delivers a complete story in one sitting. Fans of the series will find closure and resolution, making it a must-watch for those invested in the characters and their emotional journeys. Seamless Integration with the Series The film seamlessly continues the story from where the anime series left off. It doesn’t feel like an afterthought or an unnecessary addition. Instead, it enriches the existing plotlines, providing answers to lingering questions and deepening our understanding of the characters. Viewers who followed the series will appreciate how well the movie integrates with the establis…

Compliments the series really well, in my opinion it even surpasses it. Doesn't really differ from the series, this could've easily been an extension of the anime if it was chopped up into ~4 episodes. However this storyline is even better than the ones in the series and focuses more on romance which was lacking from the series a bit. Just like in the series, the characters are very much alive, they're very well written and this movie pushes these characters even further. The only reason I'm not giving it a 10 is the ending. I explain it below with light spoilers. --- LIGHT SPOILER --- The emotions were strong throughout the entire movie up until the end. The ending is cowardly, it pleases the viewers with a happy ending where everyone gets what they want, which is wrong. The entire mo…

Forgetting the absurdly long and weird name, this was a good movie. But one thing plagues this movie. This movie is amazing no doubt, but it just oozes Haruhi Suzumiya vibes for some reason. It is a good thing for sure, but it is to the point where I felt like it took heavy inspiration from it. The plot is about saving Makinohara from heart failure. The MC had a bunch of debates with himself on if he has to save himself or sacrifice his life for Makinohara. There were a lot of challenges and struggles. We also meet a future version of Makinohara and there are some time travel elements to this movie, really really similar to Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. But then again it was different enough. I liked it. Animation is good, ED for this series still slaps. All in all would have b…

Bunny Senpai movie is an absolute fucking tearjerker that I love coming back to and showing it to people so they also suffer. Despite having watched it three times already, I still cry with it because it's a story done to hurt you specially when you know what's gonna happen. It explores our desire of "I could of have done something better" a lot which is something I find incredibly interesting. It is definitely not a movie that can be watched alone without the anime so be aware of that. In the movie we finally get to explore Makinohara Shouko's character in an extensive way which I truly appreciate because it's the only character that still had some questions around some might argue that we got edged way too hard but I definitely feel like the context of the anime was needed and that the…

"Seishun Buta Yarou wa Yumemiru Shoujo no Yume wo Minai," also known as "Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl," serves as a compelling and emotionally charged continuation of the "Bunny Girl Senpai" series. Released in 2019 as a film, this installment delves deeper into the complexities of its characters' relationships and psychological struggles. To fully appreciate the emotional depth of "Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl," it's essential to have watched the previous series and to view this film as a continuation. The film excels in further developing the established characters, particularly Sakuta and Mai, while introducing the enigmatic Shouko Makinohara.
