Makoto Shinkai has been exploring natural disasters in his films since Your Name, at least as far as I can remember, but unlike his previous feature films, this element takes on a much greater significance in Suzume, becoming central to the film's very conception. The narrative is not so much focused on character development as it is on conveying a feeling that seems to permeate the entire work: grief. And this is not just the grief experienced by the characters, but also a collective grief, connected to the memory of a country that has historically suffered from major disasters. Throughout Suzume's journey, particularly in the moments when the doors are closed, the film evokes places and lives that have been interrupted but remain present in the memories of those left behind. In this sens…

I finally watched it. I would rather I could watch it in the theater but this was never brought to Cineplex. This is a beautifully animated movie by Makoto Shinkai. It still looks as good as Your Name but its not as good, mainly I think the story of Your Name was better. Also I didn't buy the fantasy elements in this move as much.
Other than the animation the movie the emotion core of the movie is done well, as the show deals with grief and loss. Also the road trip across Japan gives it a sense of adventure.

Suzume takes the best parts of what made Your Name so great and somehow still improves upon them.
The romance plot takes the back seat this time around and focuses more on relationships between friends, family, nature, and the coming of age. Your Name did lots of this, but it was often played for laughs, whereas Suzume I feel as though takes its characters and the audience itself more seriously.
The storyline grapples with deep themes that really wrench your heart toward the end, but in a way that doesn't make you feel as much grief as it does catharsis.
Beautiful art, fun characters, perfect balance of story vs emotion vs humor, and even intrigue at some of the sci-fi elements.
Highly recommend.

Before that, I want to give major appreciation to CoMix Wave for doing an amazing job creating anime with god-tier visuals and cinematography like Suzume no Tojimari and Makoto Shinkai's other works.
Suzume no Tojimari carries such deep meaning, and Suzume is so courageous for tackling a theme that is very sensitive and leaves a lasting scar on Japanese society—earthquakes.
The music collaboration with Radwimps is also extraordinary. Considering that Radwimps has been on board since Your Name, I thought they had past their prime—but that turned out not to be the case.
Unfortunately, nothing is perfect.
I feel so sorry for Makoto Shinkai fans. Even though it tackles a different theme than before, the pattern is just so obvious when you look at Shinkai's previous works. As a Makoto Shink…

Bad things happen, things appear to bear no meaning, yet we dance, and we love.
I admit I didn't like this movie much; it took a very long time to really come together, and most of the characters along the way weren't believable. They were a little TOO nice and cooperative to Suzume, which didn't make for a great time imo. Things just happened, and they kept chasing the cat for over an hour. It felt like an endless setup for something that never came, up until those final few minutes...
Although I admit they would've hit harder had what came before been a little better, it still hit me very hard; The message is the best part of this movie, not the movie itself, which I think is not a great takeaway, but some things were good enough to keep me interested all the way, like the animation/co…

I quite liked it hoenstly, the storyline as always pretty and has a macrocosm of the natural disasters and a loose connection with the passage of time. Through researching the disasters of the movie especially, 11, it showed that it was tied to the tsunami where she was a kid. I liked how shinkai makoto templed with time once again and of course radwimps did not fail to deliver but I felt the romance was a bit too forced this time, and there were a bit of 3D animation that wasnt to my liking. But, overall still happy and again brainwashing soundtrack du dudududududu

Okay, this is honestly one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen in my life. From the very first scene, it felt like something special, something that wasn’t just a movie, but an experience that stays with you long after the credits roll. The animation is breathtaking in every single frame: the colors, the lighting, the movement, the atmosphere… everything is crafted with so much care that it almost feels unreal. The story touched me in a way I can barely put into words. It’s emotional, magical, and deeply human at the same time. Every moment felt meaningful, and every scene carried a kind of quiet beauty that made me completely fall in love with it. I was fully absorbed (the characters, the music, the world, the emotions) all of it blended together perfectly. What I love the most i…

This might be the best Shinkai's piece amongst his other works.
First of all, CoMix Wave do not disappoint me with their stunning animation. Just like their previous work on Your Name and Weathering with You, they served us with amazing visuals, like the sceneries for example. You can just see how much work they put into the animation alone.
Aside from that, the story is great. It was a very interesting concept for sure, and they did not waste any time by dragging the duration. Every second in that 2 hour feels important for the plot. And how they did the intense scene is great, the colors conveys the scene neatly, also you can really feel the emotions of the character during some of the emotional scenes.
Speaking of character, let's jump right into them. The main character (Suzume) i…

Really good movie but something is missing.
I loved the premise and story, but I can't stop feeling that it could have been better as a series.
For over two decades, Makoto Shinkai works have been praised by their beautiful animations and touching music. Suzume is no exception.
Mesmerizing scenarios and a breathtaking depiction of nature and food. Flowed movements of human and non-human characters. A lighting style that feels natural, yet dream-like.
However, there's always something that prevents the stories from being perfect.
Suzume feels particularly incomplete.
Not because of an open ending, but because of a chopped character development and interaction. So many things going on in a single movie, that the characters don't get enough time to interact and properly justify their bonds.…

7.5/10 ~ Girl keeps chase for chair
This move is in the realm of 'Your name', 'weathering with you' and 'A silent voice'. All of which are good and I would recommend all 4 of these movies, if you enjoy 1 you'll probably enjoy all. Great to show your family or Significant other.
✅School girl biking down rural beach town to water scene
✅MC looks like she's the rival in Pokemon SV
✅Love interest is modern day howl (moving castle)
✅gibli-esk intrigue to explain natural phenomenon
✅great character growth that the viewer can learn from too
✅paranormal activity with a realistic and normal response's lol ✅Milf
Its a good time, go watch. Its on Netflix.
The reachability on these types of movies are really high which is a total bonus in my book!

Suzume centers on a fantasy road narrative that blends supernatural disaster mythology with a coming-of-age journey about grief, memory, and healing. The story follows Suzume Iwato, a high school girl living in a quiet town in Kyushu, whose life changes after meeting a mysterious traveler named Souta Munakata. Souta is searching for abandoned places across Japan where strange doors, portals that must be sealed to prevent catastrophic disasters from emerging into the human world. When Suzume accidentally opens one of these doors, she becomes entangled in Souta’s mission, triggering a chain of events that transforms their journey into a cross-country race to prevent destruction. As the story progresses, the narrative expands from a localized mystery into a broader exploration of loss and col…

I expected a more serious Japanese story from Suzume (like Kimi no na wa), but in the end I got more of a Japanese fairy tale, which had nice characters and an acceptable plot, but lacked a bit of momentum – fortunately and to my surprise, it picked up the pace (at least in terms of feeling) and perhaps even a slightly greater depth/adult level in the second part of the story (just past the halfway point of the film – you can't miss that part) and I actually enjoyed it. Considering that it works well as a "fairy tale" for both younger and older people, I'll squint and give it another 5* – I would especially welcome a faster pace throughout the story and perhaps more music, but otherwise I'm satisfied.

It was simply amazing one of the most artistically beautiful pieces of animation I’ve ever seen. Every Makoto Shinkai tries to improve the animation of the previous and while I thought nothing could surpass the comet scene in Your Name, this movie finally gave me something even more breathtaking in terms of pure artistry.
The story, on the other hand, wasn’t the strongest. It felt more like a thread connecting the visual spectacles together than a truly gripping narrative. And because of that, the emotional beats didn’t land as hard as they did in Your Name.
The best part about the movie was the visuals. The scene where Suzume discovers the door in the empty stadium and steps into that night sky horizon it was just amazing, one of the most beautiful moments I’ve seen in animation.
The c…

I liked this more than I expected to, and maybe because it also functioned as a road trip across Japan for most of the second part, and that it animated cities, motorways and all settings really well.
Even though it has overly-sentimental moments (what you would expect from a Makoto Shinkai work) I think it’s a very good film, with an interesting fantasy premise. I don’t care about the criticism his films get. Yes of course the lovely animation is always the best part, but this one is really funny sometimes and has an interesting plot. The characters were… interesting.. if you know what I mean, and there was a really cute cat that was also so purposely annoying at the same time but I didn’t really care because I love cats :D
Anyway so what if Shinkai’s films have the tiniest bit of produ…

An interesting premise!
Suzume has a very different narrative idea than usual. The idea of having to close these “passages” so that enemies don’t come to Suzume’s reality is something very unusual. I don’t remember seeing anything like it. It was really fun to watch. The movie went by really quickly for me, and it wasn’t tiring to watch. The aesthetics of the movie are wonderful. Everything is really beautiful to watch. The animation is a spectacle of beauty with incredible fluidity in the movements. Even the moving chair has an incredible quality (better than the entire season of Nanatsu no Taizai). The soundtrack is relaxing and works really well with the animation, creating a pleasant atmosphere for watching. The story, although a bit confusing, is very straight to the point. I liked t…

Suzume is the next work of Makoto Shinkai after the beautiful Weathering With You which I really loved. As usual, from the visual art style point of view, I once again witnessed a jaw-dropping masterpiece that literally stunned my eyes from the beginning to the end.
The impression I had was of an even more mature Makoto, especially in what I found to be a wise usage of the CGI, not as a mere cost-saving replacement for the hand-drawing like may happen in other anime, but rather as an enrichment of the latter in order to bring out the very best of it.
As for the plot and general rhythm, I believe that compared to his previous works (especially the very first ones), this time Makoto aimed at putting aside the sentimental and emotional aspects a little bit more, in favor of a more vibrant…

As I've expected from Makoto Shinkai works, the visuals are always gorgeous. But, the main problem is the love story that isn't explored more deeply. Unlike the previous two works entitled "Your Name" and "Weathering with You" where the love story is better because the main character is given time and process to approach, meanwhile in this anime Suzume is made to fall in love at first sight until she is willing to travel Japan to help the boy's task and save him. This is what makes Suzume's motivation in helping her love interest seem too forced.
However, the adventures of Suzume and her love interest are fun to follow, but the final act feel flat (maybe lacking music). Although the relationship love story of this anime is bad, one thing that caught my attention was the relationship betw…

tl;dr: Another iteration of the Shinkai formula, that has significantly messier writing but just as fantastic visuals and music.
Suzume is the newest film from acclaimed director Shinkai Makoto. The background to the story is that there’s a great evil worm sealed in the great beyond, but there are various doors throughout Japan through which the evil can escape. The evil escaping triggers a natural disaster in the surrounding vicinity. There are two gods that act as keystones to keep these doors sealed, and a line of people known as the Closer are tasked with ensuring the seal remains intact and the doors remains shut.
However, a high school girl named Suzume accidentally releases one of the keystones, thus allowing the evil to escape from doors all across Japan. Furthermore, said keysto…

A Personal Review of Suzume
There was a time when I felt completely disconnected—from my family, my work, and the people around me. Today was one of those days. After an argument with my parents and my brother, I took my motorcycle and ran away from home, riding far until I reached a bridge. I stood there, looking at the water, the city lights, and the vast night sky. For a brief moment, I thought about everything—about how distant I felt from my own life. On my way back, I saw a man standing by the railway. I asked if he wanted to talk, and he refused. In that moment, I realized—he must have thought I was trying to scam him. And then it hit me. Oh, so he thinks I’m a scammer too. It made me feel even more disconnected, as if no matter what I did, people would only ever assume the worst.…
