Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp

Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp

Introduction

In her first life, the renowned and genius surgeon Dr. Aoi Takamoto was Elise de Clorance, a villainess of noble descent. Elise's selfishness, insolence, and obsessive love for her fiancé—Prince Linden de Romanoff—led to the deaths of her family members and, eventually, herself. Only after being reborn did Elise realize the error of her ways and decide that, instead of ruining lives, she would devote herself to saving them. But a tragic airplane crash robs her of her dreams too soon. By a miracle, Elise wakes up in her original body before her official engagement to Linden. Recognizing the chance to cherish her loving family and free Linden from an unwanted marriage, Elise wishes to use her advanced medical knowledge to continue down the path of saving lives. In a deal with the emperor, Elise is given only six months to prove that her true place is not on the throne, but rather with the wounded and ailing who desperately need her help. so you're telling me she's a cardiologist and a GE and ABLE TO TRACHEOSTOMISE while also able to FIND a clot without doing any ctpa with no contrast dye (nada)...colour me impressed!! it's high time i start holding my dr colleagues to a higher standard. a feel-good, empowering anime but very evidently lacking in substance. personally a very routine isekai watch, but not outstanding or particularly memorable in any way. characters were routine as usual; stony, curt prince who keeps to himself (more of a kuudere), pitted against the likes of a strong, self-assured, Dr Elise who saves the world one miraculous surgery at a time.

Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp Score: 7/10 (Watched – Completed) Story – 8/10 You’ve got a reincarnated genius surgeon trying to redeem her past life as a spoiled noble.. what’s not to like? The premise is solid and surprisingly fresh for the usual isekai/romance-medical-fantasy soup. The anime follows the manhwa/web novel pretty closely at first, but then it suddenly remembers it only has 12 episodes and starts speedrunning character arcs. Blink and you’ll miss a trauma. Art – 6/10 Elise looks great. Everyone else? Pretty decent. Animation? Eh. If you’re expecting smooth sakuga moments or high-stakes surgical drama with flair, lower those expectations. There’s a lot of standing around and dramatic talking with very little movement. It’s serviceable, but you can feel the bu…

I want to say this in the simplest way possible. The anime is/was a good watch overall. Just like how water is good for you. If you want more out of the Doctor Elise, aka going out of your way for sparkling water, I recommend you begin reading. It will not disappoint :) long ver: In the world of Isekai which is I am a high consumer of, this one stands out like a lot :). It's unique and original, its fun without being "too in your face". The art style was beautiful as well, some scenes are generic animations but they went over the top on some scenes; and the voice acting is chef's kiss. As for the characters, I think if this had more episodes we could see how much more vibrant they are. But, overall, they're pretty good. Overall, I would highly recommend this series to diverse "consu…

As a lover of comically bad isekai manhwa, I was relatively prepared for this show to be, well, comically bad. It wasn't that far off. Pushing aside the fact that the main character woke up one day and, without any previous experience in this world, decided "let's become a doctor, that's certainly won't be suspicious," the writing, the animation, and the characters all leave much to be desired. To be honest, I actually wish that this show was comically bad because, in reality, it's just cringeworthy. I believe that the isekai genre, as a whole, is fun because of the absurdity in most situations, but this whole thing just feels plain lazy.

General Opinion: A fine, if not flawed Anime. Plot. Gekai Elise (Americanized to "Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp") is a story about a girl who was an awful human being and forced her way into a marriage with the Crown Prince in order to become the Queen. Her world and evils eventually unravel, she is killed (literally burned at the stake), and is (for unknown reasons) given a chance to repent by being reborn in the modern world, where she devotes every ounce of her strength and time to become the foremost general surgeon in the world. He then dies in the modern world in a plane crash by spending time giving first aid to all the survivors, rescuing all of them, but causing herself to die by not treating her own wound which she bleeds out due to just as rescue arrives. She is th…

As a doctor, I really enjoyed this. I finished it in one night. I enjoyed both political part and medical part. I'm surprised the doctor part was pretty good except the emergency scene at the airplane. Apart from that is pretty much realistic especially the outpatient service - the questions she ask the patient to approach to the disease are real and do investigations for diseases that needs to do, not like some other medical-related fiction that only mention the difficulty of surgery and it's almost always super rare disease or tricky cases - -. I love that this story is not cliche and not overdramatic. This is how real doctor's life is. I think the author did a good research. This is a mix of isekai-medical-politics-((and a little romance)). I'd say if you're a doctor who does OPD and…

It's a time killer. They attempted to cram transmigration, villainess redemption, doctor house, women empowerment, mary sue "wow that girl is amazing and can do everything!", unachievable love, political intrigue and reverse harem into 12 episodes, with predictable results. It's not a bad story, but due to time constraints it's all very shallow and smudgy. The general plot fails to interest me, with it being "MC makes a wager with king-sama so that she can escape the fate of marrying the bishounen, kind prince and become and empress; only that way she can be a doctor and save a lot of people". Watch out, bitch, how i'll smack you when season 2 rolls around and she becomes either "Doctor Empress" that will release the modern medicinal knowledge, or just a "normal empress" that realizes tha…

The art was a downgrade from the webtoon (main reason why i have mixed feelings). However, I personally felt that the story is more well-paced and there's more character development in the anime, considering the length of the medium. My main gripe with the webtoon was the heavy focus on Elise's talent and how everyone from all walks of life is impressed by her medical skills, dedication, and kindness. It can be very repetitive. The anime tries to address this to some extent by including more interactions between Elise and other characters that do not glorifying Elise's talent. Other characters are allowed some time to showcase their emotional turmoil. I would recommended this anime to people who want little to no drama, and simply wants to feel good by seeing the main character excel w…

Below average adaptation of the manwha Almost all criticism and complaints I see for this anime would have been or are resolved in the Manwha adaptation. Things to note Pacing The pacing is very odd and often feels like no progress is being made or suddenly all the intense scenes happens with little to no build up. They definitely cut and rush many parts from the manwha and added some irrelevant things... Such as the festival day? And the whole of episode 1 being based in modern day. Also there has been removal of characters most likely to not go into the bigger storyline that existed in the manwha Medical aspect They medical aspect is a little more in depth in the manwha and they go into it slightly deeper. Still very surfaced level however it definitely shines a bit more. Character…

they changed so many good scene from the webtoon, the character aare so flat, elise is not like this, they change her character too much, the only thing that stayed is a "bad writting" the ml is suposed to be more serious(why the cleaning scene exist?!), they ruined it with a bad writting, it's one of my fav but the anime is really not good. I recommend to read it instead. itt go too face, the pacing is strange, so many important moment are innexistant and they focus to much on the realtion instead of the actual action. the idea is really good, but they tried to make it child friendly when it'sd a darker story, it''s not supposed to be that "cute". The voice actors are really good, but really why

Everything is fine, but the writing is crazy bad There is a scene where a fire started inside a theater and our main character, Elise (of a very high ranking family, second only to the imperial family), tells some nobles not to breathe the obviously toxic smoke. Well... the show, out of thin air, pulls a nobles vs commoner girl cliché, and they start ranting about how they are nobles and superior and she is no one to tell them what to do, all this while breathing the smoke and coughing. It was so absurd that had me laughing, however, the other times this happens are not so funny. The show is filled with these moments where clichés happen without any regard to the story. Most of the times they are small things, like a character saying some line that doesn't make any sense, however, somet…

If you are looking for a medical show, this is not it. If you are looking for a period drama/romance, this is not it. If you are looking for a villainess/reincarnation story, this is not it either. This show squanders its many ingredients and shows no signs of life throughout. There are not many medical anime shows out there (to my knowledge), so I was really excited for this one. Unfortunately, the medical aspect is seriously lacking. I am not a medical professional so I cannot comment on realism, but I can say that the medical problems and solutions feel very simplistic. Elise makes some observations, rattles off medical terminology like she is reading off of Wikipedia, identifies the condition, proceeds to administer treatment, and then the patient is fine. The whole process is very “A…

As a fresh take on the villainess reincarnation trope, Doctor Elise started out promising. The medical drama aspect is fairly unique for anime, presenting a variety of detailed and somewhat intense medical procedures. The romance is engaging too, with plenty of time spent on the leads growing together naturally. However, the confused time period of the setting really threw things off. Despite the rest of the setting being vaguely pre-industrial, the medical knowledge and technology is more advanced for some reason, kind of all over the place but usually something like 20th century. A show about an alternate medical history to our own would be fascinating, but it feels like very little thought went into this aspect. It boils down to them having many modern tools for safe surgery, but lacki…

Have you ever had that feeling when a series is too fast and too slow at the same time, when it somehow feels completely off the pace? I had exactly that feeling with "Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp". Apart from the fact that I don't know where the lamp is supposed to be in the series, the anime is about a noblewoman who was executed at the stake by her husband. However, she wakes up in our world and wants to make up for her past mistakes and becomes a doctor who is considered an absolute genius. She is so talented that she rescues every injured passenger after an airplane crash without having any tools. In the end, however, she dies from her own injuries, only to wake up again shortly before her engagement! In order to really make up for her mistakes and prevent all the suffe…

Deeply disappointed I liked the first few episodes then it hit me how medically all over this setting is. It’s supposed to be a medevil society but it has the medical tech of 19th century while have medical tools of 20th century. It would have been so much more interesting if the author knew anything about medical science besides what they googled. Have a person with 21st century medical science have to deal with not having the tools she needs to do anything, calling her a genius while not have to adapt at all is so terrible. When watching this I just wanted to pull out my copy of Black Jack instead of this minimum effort medical drama “romance”. The romance is non existent he doesn’t even interact with her as himself most of the shows run time. Why is thier no consequences for her pa…

At first glance, 'The Anime' didn't seem to offer anything new. It fell into familiar tropes of reincarnation and second chances, leaving me somewhat disinterested. However, after giving it a chance and watching the initial episodes, I found myself unable to look away. The anticipation for the next episode was palpable, but rather than waiting idly, I delved into the source material—a Korean manhwa. The depth and detail I found there only heightened my excitement for the anime's continuation. Yet, upon returning to the anime, I was sorely disappointed. While the characters and storyline remained, the essence of what made the manhwa captivating seemed lost in translation. Alice's transformation from a mere noble to a remarkable doctor was glossed over, robbing the series of its emotional…

I've seen many isekai and reincarnation stories over the years. The more recent ones have developed somewhat of a bad habit of excessive power fantasy and heavy wish fulfillment. It's a guilty pleasure to be sure. But every so often we get a story that offers a bit more. Gekai Elise is an anime adaptation of Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp, a Korean web novel that was later given a webtoons adaptation in 2017. My first impressions of the anime were strong enough that I decided to pick up the webtoon and read ahead. I read a lot more than watch anime, so if one has source material, I start by comparing that if I can. First off, the anime takes a few liberties in adapting the story. The romance is more subdued in the anime and there is greater emphasis on proper medical practices.…

I will be honest, this was a disappointment. I read the story (multiple times) and I was looking forward to see it happening in an anime, but they butchered the story and the characters a lot resulting in an incoherent and messy story that could've been soo much better. If I had to describe how this anime feels, then I would see it feels like watching a Hollywood adaptation of a beloved anime. Look, the new story isn't bad. It's passable. But is that what you want from an anime? I do recommend this anime simply because it's pretty unique, but I recommend reading the story more.

Gekai Elise is one of the more original isekai, or should I say, “reverse isekai”, in recent years. What makes this one cool is that Elise is given another shot at life in her original world AFTER being isekai’d to Earth. This allows her the unique experience of combining both her original life’s knowledge and the medicinal skills she gained on Earth making for a really fun watch. Now, there’s going to be some party poopers who say the show isn’t accurate or realistic in its portrayal of some medical stuff and to that I’ll agree, but it’s ultimately anime not grey’s anatomy. I’m not watching this for 100 percent accuracy. The fact we’re getting a show that handles medicine and doctors in a somewhat realistic manner in a fantasy world is so cool. I’m so used to healing magic or fantastical…
