Danganronpa: The Animation

Danganronpa: The Animation

Introduction

Makoto Naegi, a teenager with no remarkable talent, is surprised to learn that he has been accepted into Hope's Peak Private Academy: an elite school that gathers the best students from various fields. Despite believing his admission was just a fluke, Naegi is delighted to attend an institution known for ensuring success to those who graduate. Determined, he enters the front doors of the prestigious academy. However, after losing consciousness inside, Naegi wakes up in a seemingly abandoned classroom. Failing to comprehend how he got there, Naegi begins to explore, and to his surprise, finds his classmates assembled in the gym. While everyone is trying to figure out what happened, they are confronted by the school principal—Monokuma, a robotic teddy bear. The mysterious toy explains that the freshmen are trapped inside the school with only one means of escape—kill a classmate without being discovered. Tension fills the air as Naegi and his classmates realize that they are faced with two choices: participate in Monokuma's killing game, or reside together in the school for the rest of their lives. Incredible story, incredible cast of characters that you immediately become attached to. The atmosphere and vibe is great, they really capture the vibe that the original game had. And the trials and murders are incredible, they start of believable and quickly become clever and intricate. The cleverness is out of this world, every piece of evidence and dialogue matters to the case. Even the most miniscule of dialogue can make or break a case. After the first murder I had to mentally note to myself not to underestimate the writers because they genuinely write stuff I never knew a murder mystery could do like obfuscating evidence, switching crime scenes, multiple victims, etc. There are the small individual mysteries tied to the current murder, and then the larger overarching mystery of Hope'…

The story was both serious and lighthearted, with humor woven throughout. It featured a unique animation style that changed at times. The portrayal of gore in the anime was both impressive and distinctive while maintaining a comedic tone. Overall, it was beautifully done. Although it was confusing at first, the anime was great, with high-quality animation. Would rate it 9/10. And on the anime tier list, it will rank |A+|. As for recommending the anime, it's not for someone who only enjoys serious titles, nor for those who can't handle any gore. While it doesn't have intense gore, it does get serious at times. Some scenes may not feel serious even though they are, which might be intentional to prevent the anime from becoming too heavy. If you can handle a bit of gore, you might enjoy this…

I Loved this show. Hate Me or Love me for it. Its the best Anime ive ever seen. I really dont get the critique on this anime at all. Im gonna be honest i Didnt Play the game nor have i watched gameplay of it, and im not somebody who watched this back in its days. I only know this because of the kyoko kirigiri execution meme. At first i thought that this is gonna be the Worst shit ive ever seen and Oh was i proven wrong. I think this is the Greatest piece of Fiction ever Created, hate me for it. Of course you aint finna agree Because my Taste on Anime is mostly about ecchi romance slop. Just wanted to give my opinion out there since i really dont think it deserves the Hate in any way.

This was one of those anime I started ages ago, watched about half of the first season… and then completely forgot about. It just slipped out of my mind somehow. But now that I finally came back to it, I’m actually really satisfied with the whole experience. I won’t lie, the episode order and the continuation were confusing at times. The structure is chaotic, the pacing jumps around, and sometimes you’re just sitting there like “wait… what?” But once I pushed through and finished it, I ended up being pleasantly surprised ^^ The twists, the characters, the insane atmosphere, it all came together in a way that made the return totally worth it. I’m glad I gave it another chance, because the ending hit way better than I expected. A messy journey, but a surprisingly rewarding one.

I'm going to tell you why I've watched this anime three times and I never get tired of it! Well, it was only after watching it so many times that I went to play the game, and now I highly recommend it even if you know everything, because the experience is much richer and more immersive. And don't think you know it all, because the anime rushes through the crimes, and in the game you analyze everything in detail. First, the unique aesthetic: with so many generic anime where all the characters look identical, Danganronpa breaks the mold by making good use of "overdesign"—where you can recognize a character just by their silhouette, their characteristics are so "exaggerated." The girls in this anime were a major focus of my attention because they are so stylish; they really make good use of…

Danganronpa 1 is an absolutely amazing game with a fantastic atmosphere and art direction, great gameplay, amazing music, and an engrossing narrative. Now take everything away from it and you get the anime adaptation The art direction was changed pretty heavily, likely to fit an anime budget, and feels very cheap and nothing like the VN it's based on. The great narrative is still there, but heavily worsened by awful pacing trying to fit a 25-30 hour VN into a 13 episode season. A lot of the gameplay experience from the original game is obviously not here which is a major issue since a majority of the gameplay in this series is trying to figure out the mysteries and murders yourself in the class trials. It's a very messy adaptation that, while still giving you the overall story of the ori…

this was a breath of fresh air when it was first recommended to me and when I first watched it. Honestly, still is today. Unique animation style that stands out, outstanding world building, great smokescreens and red herrings (or maybe im just dumb idk) and lastly, a masterpiece idea of a game/game concept. I re-watched this around covid and i'm still on the edge of my seat. I'm a sucker for these kinds of unique sortascifi-killing-thriller-mystery games, what stood out to me from Danganronpa is the concept of the game is easily graspable yet it's hard to make a great story out of it and this animation pulled off both effortlessly and you would want more of it due to its great yet curious world building, you would want to know what's happening outside of that school or why these are the pe…

I just finished watching Akudama Drive, which took a lot of inspiration from Danganronpa, so I figured I had to check out the OG inspiration behind such a solid show and I wasn't disappointed. Although I understand its based on a murder mystery game of the same name I think they did a great job at adapting it into an anime as there are some things in the game that just don't translate to the anime format. If we spent enough time to "hang out with" every single character in the series to get to know them the anime would be insanely slow. We got enough from the more important characters in the series to really make the loss felt when they were killed. With that said not every character got the spotlight but I will say the pace and the development was overall really good for a show that adapt…

Danganronpa: The Animation exemplifies the problem with game adaptations, the inability to contrive ingenious modifications to imbue idiosyncrasy into the anime counterparts. Following the game’s structure almost identically isn’t an issue in and of itself; however, plagiarizing assets that appear misplaced in the medium is an obvious blunder. Coupling that with the breakneck pacing produces a vapid and inconsistent narrative flow where there isn’t enough time for the viewer to comprehend either the severity of events or the psychological motivations involved in such compromised situations. The investigations are the best aspect of the game, but the anime is unconcerned with providing satisfactory exposition concerning the murders, automatically eliminating the prime purpose of the story.…

Honestly it’s fine as a recap, but it’s really not a good idea to watch as your first introduction to the series. It’s not a fantastic watch and will spoil the story that’s presented a lot better in game. The best thing about Danganronpa 1 is the setting and atmosphere but it’s almost impossible to capture that feeling of dread in 13 episodes. It’s made worse because the work it’s adapting is over 20 hours long with a lot of incredibly complicated plotlines and 15 major characters. As a result all the characters lack depth and each storyline feels very rushed. The villain is somehow made even more grating and nonsensical than in the original, and the dub voice acting definitely doesn’t help. The investigations and mysteries are also a lot less investing because they all happen so sudden…

Coming in never having played the game, this was rushed, and full of things that are pulled from nowhere. Admittedly, maybe if I had played the game it would have made more sense, but they don't bill it as something you need to have played the game to understand. I did not really care about any of the characters, and the things that happen are not the sorts of things you can even remotely guess on your own. The twists and turns feel like they are unearned, and all of the worst mystery tropes are on display here. The first 3 episodes are ok, but then it just completely went off the rails, and the last episode is not great, and full of stuff that makes absolutely no sense. The only reason I finished the show was so I could check it off. Dialogue is full of lines that sound like they are s…

"Killing game? More like Killing the game." Danganronpa: The Animation is an anime adaptation of the beloved game Trigger Happy Havoc, a murder mystery game that exploded in popularity. Personally, I absolutely loved it, and have played through all 3 games. Does the anime live up to the hype? I'll be rating this anime based on these factors: Story, Characters, Art, Sound, Efficacy, and Personal Enjoyment. Story - 6 The anime does a fairly decent job of touching on the story's key points. It's never deviates from the plot, which is fine for something like this, but it makes the overall story feel empty. Danganronpa involved numerous moments of exploration and character interaction that helped to fill in holes in pacing and plot. This just feels like a start to finish marathon. It's servic…

As a brief note: The anime Danganronpa is adapted from a game. The playtime is supposed to be around 20-30 hours. So the question is, how do you fit 20-30 hours of gameplay into 13 episodes? Quite simply, by skipping relevant parts and running the show like a speedrun. In the first episode, students pass out after entering the school grounds. Explanation? None! After they wake up, they are already in the school and in a game of life and death. Why, how, or for what reason? No explanation! You will find logical errors more frequently in this anime. I noticed several in the first episode alone. What feels extremely unnatural is the apparently most important part of this show, the trial. During the trials, the characters have a change of heart every time, and evidence suddenly comes to mind…

Don't watch this unless you've played the 'Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc' game first. The show just basically recaps the events of the game, but with very rushed pacing. The story of the original game is excellent, but the anime adapts it very poorly. I'd recommend watching a Let's Play video on YouTube instead of this. The Original Story 10/10. The story of the original game has a lot of unpredictable plot twists and it's one of the best I've seen in any media. Characters: 9/10. Most of the characters have very likable and unique personalities. Sometimes, certain characters might be a bit annoying. Animation: 7/10. Nothing special, but gets the job done. The Adaptation: 3/10. Overall, a very poor adaptation. The anime rushes and spoils everything that is good in the original game.

Having started this immediately after beating the game, my expectations had already been set and, to be honest, they weren't very high. I thought that there was no way a measly 13 episodes was going to be able to adapt the story of Danganronpa's first game in a satisfying way. While not entirely true, my expectations were mostly met. The way they handled the investigations and free time was baffling to say the least. For most of the first half, all of the character interactions and evidence gathering are squished into quick 1 minute montages. Lots of characters got shafted in favor of moving the story along so it was hard to get that attached to the ones that die early on. Granted there's more time to breathe in the second half when there's less characters to worry about, and it was actu…

It’s a fine adaptation. After completing the games and giving it some time in between I found myself missing this cast of characters and ended up watching this to fill the void. I watched the dub, because I played the game in English and was disappointed to find that the voice actors didn’t return (For the most part - Makoto sounds identical). It’s not distractingly bad but some characters like Hiro or Monokuma are absolutely butchered. I feel like the game had a crucial advantage over this anime as well and that would be pacing. Every character in Danganronpa is a trope taken to the highest level it can go and I feel like the anime doesn’t spend enough time with every character for that level to ever really be achieved. I love Hina, she’s my favorite in the game and now in this anime as w…

This is probably the best video game adaptation of all time. I watched this back when everyone was obsessed with Danganronpa, and it was such an interesting anime to watch while in quarantine. The characters are lovable, the animation isn't bad, and the voice actors are amazing picks, and suit the characters well. Even if some of the actors aren't the one from the game, they sound similar, or even fit the characters better than the original voice actors. The executions are beautifully illustrated, and are more polished and clean in the anime then they are in the game. The music from the video game is also prominent in the anime, so hearing the soundtrack from the video game along with the new soundtrack is great. The main storyline is also perfectly compressed to fit the 12 episodes, an…

this is a great example of an amazing game, but a horrible execution of an anime. the story is very rushed and everything is just very flat and disappointing if you're expecting every detail from the game implemented into the anime. i didn't even watch the full thing because of how bland it was - i feel like watching a playthrough of this game could even be a better "anime", however i give an A for effort for them to make a whole anime adaptation of it and spending time to actually animate the whole thing. my review needs more words so id like to say that the game is crazy intense and immersive so i give that a 10/10

I remember liking this anime so much, but the game is just so much better. My Danganronpa phase went hard af tho. Story feels kinda rushed. It's only 13 episodes and one game of Danganronpa should take a lot longer than that. The game helps you get emotionally attached to characters after a long period of time, but this ones just like "BAM now that guys dead!" Plus it takes away all the fun of solving the case. Cases like Trial 1 was fun in the game even if it was obvious, you still had fun minigames to play during the trial and finally figuring out the hole in someones argument after a long time is GOLD ...but for the show you seriously have to just be like "welp its pretty obvious who it is, now I have to watch like 2 episodes for them to figure it all out on their own." It takes the e…

Haven't played the game but SERIOUSLY the story is amazing , the ending and the plot is also unquestionably on point ! Lemme give you a overview : Hope's Peak Academy is an elite high school that accepts only the most talented students. And out of ALL the 15 students makato naegi is a normal individual, who has been accepted , And been given the title of "Super High School - Level Luck . Naegi and the other 15 students were happy to have been accepted but it was all short-lived . Check the anime for more context!!!
