Dark Gathering

Dark Gathering

Introduction

Spirits have always been attracted to Keitarou Gentouga due to his strong spiritual presence. A traumatic encounter with one had caused his right hand to be cursed, forcing him to wear a glove at all times. Now a college freshman, Keitarou is trying to live as normal a life as possible. With the encouragement of his childhood friend Eiko Houzuki, he becomes a private tutor. Since he is at the top of his intake class, his first client is the tutoring firm's most promising student, Yayoi Houzuki. To Keitarou's surprise, Yayoi is Eiko's cousin, and she possesses two pupils in each eye—allowing her to see into the spirit world and purposely seek vengeful spirits to exorcise. Ever since a car accident killed both her parents, Yayoi has been searching for the powerful spirit that kidnapped her mother's departed soul. Seeing that spirits are so attracted to Keitarou, she ropes him into helping her collect other evil spirits that will assist in her future fight. Although her quest is dangerous, Keitarou reluctantly decides to join her, even as each new spirit they meet has him questioning his resolve at every turn. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Dark Gathering is an amazing horror. It excels in its unsettling nature moreso than anything else. The animation is solid, nothing amazing, but far from bad. The voice acting and sound design are great, so too is the ost. My only complaint lies with the MC, who is a whiney little bitch. That said, he does get better, but it's almost insufferable for the first few episodes. Another pro (or a con, depending on hoe you see it) is that this has little to no censorship. The anime includes straight up gore, although it isn't the main selling point. My verdict 8/10. Go watch it if you enjoy unsettling horror.

It was surprisingly good and clever. I just started to watch because the comments compared Kaya to it, but shortly after it possesed me and forced my eyes to observe the story. In the first few episodes it was more like an interesting story about a psychic girl, but the writing cleverly built up the skeleton of the lore, cleverly used our heros' tools and the enviroment to move forward the plot. The individual stories of the spirits sometimes hit harder, than in Jigoku Shoujo. (Like the meatball and angel incident.) Plot armor was used as a showcase tool, nothing dealbreaker. I never felt once they were in baguvix mode. After this rapid escalation in the end, i am looking forward to the 2. season. Fortunetly it is in production, i hope we can observe the conclusion in 2027. My only down…

Imagine if Fatal Frame and Pokemon had a baby--weird, I know, but hold on. Now imagine it as an anime, This is what you get. This anime is something fresh, but odd. Normally ghosts are the villains, the figure you runaway from, but this anime treats them as pokemons you can encounter and capture, and this show has all the trappings for Japanese urban legends fans. First season is quite good, artstyle is decent, characters are likable enough that they don't overshadow the ghost which are the main point of the show. Hopefully it retains its unique charms and doesn't devolve into a generic shounen anime because it easily can, with a few tweaks in it. Conclusion, I really like it as a fan of Japanese spooks and as a fan of the creature collector genre.

Life is scary. I think we've made death, dying, and the afterlife even more frightening so as to make life seem less scary than it really is. That brings us to the supernatural horror genre, what if living life meant dealing with the dead and afterlife? It's been done a lot, dare I say, it's been to death. So, who better to adapt a manga about such subject matter than the studio who brought us Pokemon? Good ol' OLM. Here comes "Dark Gathering", a show about a trio of youngsters led by the youngest of them all who set out to collect, exorcise, and train ghosts all over Japan. It's right up their alley and promises to be so delightful, I couldn't wait to dig into this show: Let's GHOOO-ST!!!! Holy crap in a sacred Sake bottle, was I not prepared for what I got... When introduced to our mal…

I wanted to like this series so much, truly a pity. The premise, the general plot, the gore art style, the ghost power system and all in all the horror aspect of the anime were great! The little girl MC, Yayoi, was quite nice, too, with a tragic background, a strong motivation and a balanced power base (like she's not op, she's just smart enough to use op spirits and some items). Still on the fence about the detective mystery plot, but it seems fun. That's it for the good part. I know cutesy design can add contrast to horror, it was done pretty well in Mieruko-chan to separate normal and ghost worlds and make viewers sympathise with the MC. But here it does nothing. There are lots of gory scenes with these cute characters, at the same time some monsters are given the same design (like th…

An interesting adventure-like horror anime you shouldn't miss. Started with a simple plot but later gets deep and adds more interesting characters into the mix which makes you want to keep watching. The horror doesn't just come from the ghost stores or urban legends; there's also your common disturbing news like crimes, dark and spooky places and of course, the gory animation. The setting changes quite often too which is different from most anime shows nowadays which is really nice. The main characters have a well-connected dynamic that further makes sense from their developments throughout the story and they all have their own unique characteristics that makes them special and likeable. They all work together to solve the issue and support each other which is really nice. The enemies a…

Well, if you're not an avid fan of horror (like me) you've found an anime to watch, you might even be apprehensive but not to the point of soiling your pants, but the trauma is great with each episode you'll get that taste of I want more, the theme is excellent and fits very well with the characters and their respective developments,You know, I don't have many horror animes in my collection, but the theme of using tales from Japanese culture broadens the horizons of this show, in addition to the opening being simply a masterpiece. (sry for my poor english Im using translutor)

I really wanted to like the show more but unfortunately I struggled for months to finish it as when I would go back to watch the last episode I left in I just got bored. I watched every week as soon as the show came out. I was compelled to watch the show for the animation and genre of the anime, plus the kind of mystery aspect of the show, why does Keitaro have a glove on one hand, why does Eiko seem infatuated and weirdly creepy at times stuff like that. I honestly can't remember most of the show even though I just pretty much completed it. I got to the point where I got to episode 19 and then skipped to 25. Not proud of it but I needed to know where it ended. It ended on a cliff hanger which honestly I was disappointed in since I was hoping for a clean 25 episode anime with a decent enou…

This is a tough one. When I started watching, I was at the edge of my seat. Not out of suspense, but since I was close to dropping the show. It combines a lot of different elements from different genres. It's horror, but also comedy, and even Shonen/action. The pacing isn't great, but maybe horror focused shows need to move at a slower pace. The main child Yayoi is stylized to an almost comical extent, and we're meant to just accept that she looks like some Shonen protagonist while everyone else is wearing relatively normal clothing. I didn't like the dynamic where the main character seemed to be being taken advantage of to attract ghosts, and put in life threatening situations against his will. It gets better over time though. I didn't end up dropping the show though, since with each ep…

I loved it! The story was solid enough to make me bookmark the manga to read for later. I prefer korean mangas too and rarely want to read a Japanese manga, but this one was different. It took me a long time to get past the first episode, but once I did I was hooked. The main reason being was Yayoi, but Ill get to that later. I'm a big thriller, suspense, and horror type of guy when it comes to anime. Especially when it comes to very good ones like dark gathering because its like finding a needle in a haystack. It took me awhile to get past the first episode because of a biased towards Yayoi. I just couldnt take the anime serious at first because she was this young animated girl. Ironically enough though Yayoi ended up being my favorite character in the show because she got that dog in h…

A late review on a new but beloved series. Dark Gathering is one of the few fun to watch and well-executed horror anime adaptions of, well. All-time, honestly speaking. Horror in anime has a terrible track record, and while die-hard Junji Ito fans won't find their kicks here, for someone like myself who loves supernatural and paranormal horror, but a (mostly) happy ending, Dark Gathering is fantastic. The music is good, the pacing is decently done, and while some places did fall down in face of the original manga art (the doll scene is much creepier with the realistic hair constrasting the stylised designs), most of it, from the colour choice, action, tone and perspectives were very well done. The animators didn't censor any of the more violent scenes, and I even felt a genuine chill down…

If you are looking for horror, this is kinda mediocre, there was one very chilling aspect, that gets ruined by playing it off as a joke in ep 5, some parts are downright just FNAF jumpscares, a lot of the more disturbing themes seem too much to have a big effect, a lot of edge. If you are looking for a Shounen, this is also kinda bad, very repetitive fetch quest-like structure, characters have pretty good motivation for what they are doing and are all morally gray, exept for the MC who seems to be the pure of heart kind. The characters are fine, classic apathetic character, pretty tame sadist yandere and easily scared MC, villains are villanous.

Dark Gathering If you’re a horror fan, you’ll enjoy it - if you’re a horror snob, well, why are you even watching a horror anime? I personally, feel catered to. Plot: 8/10 Horror is a genre that anime notoriously struggles with, and often fails at. Which is why I appreciate shows like Dark Gathering that don’t take themselves too seriously and don’t commit too hard to trying to be ‘serious’ or ‘scary’. This show hits horror and it hits supernatural, just not in the way that you’d traditionally expect. Did it scare me? No. Do I expect any horror anime to scare me? No, not really. As a fan of horror generally, did I enjoy this show? Yes. The plot is motivated consistently through each character’s individual goals and desires, all of which make sense and stay consistent - an aspect tha…

A story about a 9 yr old girl going adventures with her friends to haunt ghosts in order to rescue her mother who have been captured. This supernatural thriller anime delivers the right amount of suspense and horror while keeping their audience in check by not overdoing it. As a reference, Gojo in JJK is remarkably strong, but in this anime, the MC is relatively stronger just enough to avoid death each time it came knocking on their door. It is a relatively fast paced "in anime timeline" so the suspense it gives is really kicky. This series is good for those who enjoy horror and thriller while want to be able to have a good sleep. If you are otherwise, you might find this less to meet your expectations. Overall, really good anime, fighting scenes are good, lore is a little complicated and…

I had watched a few episodes of this show, and would start watching something else, so it took me a minute to actually finish it. The first few episodes, did not pull me in. I would say that the show overtime got slightly better giving more context with ghosts/supernatural and horror. I had thought that this show was for a younger audience, but continued to watch it in the hopes to get more maturity. The characters were difficult to connect to. I probably would have scored it lower. One thing that I cannot stand, is when a show ends without resoloving crucial things. If you are unbothered by this, then you might want to check it out. The story itself felt basic for a horror story but felt it got slightly more complex as the story neared the end. There's several things happening throughou…

How many horror anime are even out there? Rarely is there any actual horror anime that gets released, and when they do, it's not particularly executed on a high level. Higurashi? Both adaptations are pretty mid and the source material...meh. Corpse party? Just edgy shock value. I'm basically out of any other ideas. And no, "horror" anime doesn't count. Horror evokes fear. Dread. Stuff like Mieroku-chan, Tokyo Ghoul, etc doesn't even count. They might be good shows, but it's more supernatural than horror. After all, horror is the fear of the unknown and being unable to fight back. The aforementioned shows do feature supernatural anomalies, but there are defined methods of fighting back and the show is the clash between humans and the supernatural. Think of stuff like xxxHolic, Ghost Hunt…

thank goodness headphones exist or else the bone chilling wouldn't be as impactful - just how the artist intended. I was prepared knowing that Dark Gathering (DG) is pretty horror-filled but oh my god i was not 'prepared' prepared for DG at all - if viewers can just be patient and push through the first cour of the anime (which isn't too difficult to do imo, the episodes are all pretty intriguing enough to sit through) - shit just hits the ceiling man - DG is NOT for the faint heart or stomach. The horror is absolutely macabre enough to twist your brain chemistry but i think it really does succeed in fueling the feeling of you wanting to continue despite the terror this anime will put you through (in the end we are all nourishing a yandere in us) here's a breakdown in numbers: story -…

If you like anime that contains ghosts in it, I think this anime is suitable for you. At first I didn't have high expectations for this anime, at first I often saw it on my TikTok home page. I thought this was just a normal horror anime with the MC being a strange little kid. But for some reason I suddenly wanted to watch this anime. And it turns out I really enjoyed it, each episode was not boring at all. The gore is also good and the graphics don't seem too different from the manga. I hope to watch anime like this again, or do you have any suggestions??
