To be completely honest, this movie feels like it exists more because someone decided the Hunter x Hunter cast needed a cinematic mission than because there was an essential story left to tell.
It's not bad, but it also doesn't come anywhere close to the level of the main series. The idea involving Netero's past and the concept of Nen could have resulted in something much more interesting, especially considering how rich the Hunter x Hunter universe is. Instead, the story feels relatively predictable and doesn't fully take advantage of its characters.
Still, it's fun to see Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio together again. I think that's the main reason to watch it: getting to spend a little more time with characters you love, even knowing they've had much better stories befor…

In the last mission move we're shown a one-off story that wasn't written by the manga's author, and it shows.
It presents an interesting but poorly executed concept: "On" basically it's corrupted Nen spawned from resentment, it lazily mirrors every Nen type instead of being its own thing, it also kind of contradicts Nen's own rules, as Nen is life energy present in every lifeform, not something with an evil twisted twin.
In it we see a hijacked tournament, where old enemies of Nero want revenge, it is an exceedingly formulaic plot, the villain writing is weak, Jed's grudge against Netero feels odd and misdirected. Finally, something new from Hunter x Hunter, and what a great feeling that was!
Hunter x Hunter: The Last Mission, for me, perfectly represents that pent-up anxiety of a fan who's gone a long time without new content. After following Hunter x Hunter and becoming so attached to that universe, any new material generates anticipation, and this film arrived precisely with that promise: to deliver something different, even if outside the main storyline.
I remember the time of its release well. There was a huge desire to revisit that world, see new characters, new conflicts, and, above all, feel again the unique atmosphere that Hunter x Hunter has. i really enjoyed this movie, though I think I liked the previous movie slightly more. Like the previous movie, this felt very much as though it could be a story inserted into the canon with a little wiggling. A lot of favorite characters appeared and the stakes were interesting to me. I also really enjoyed the character interactions though I feel a little cheated on how they handled Kurapika. Other than that, I don't really have any complaints. I had a good time and laughed at all the funny parts and shrieked at a few of the more dramatic parts. It was also interesting to watch this movie kind of use some themes from one of the canon arcs in a different way, which I can see might be annoying for some but I didn't mind it because it was a different set of circumstances and in character.

I went to the movie with high expectations being HxH a beloved series and popular enough to warrant a reboot.
What i found instead was a sock puppet show. Yes they are the same characters, behaving the exact same way as you would expect, but it felt like they were trapped in a weird limbo state. Let me explain. When movies try too hard to fit into the canon of the story they know they can't overstep their place in the timeline... And oh boy, this movie suffers greatly from it

That was disappointing. After I watched the first Hxh movie I was like alright that's not too bad and decided to watch the second one right after.
Story was alright and pacing was ok but was pretty predictable. This movie isn't even considered even in the canon in the first place but I decided to give it a shot since the Hxh series was pretty good. The art was awful but the animation and effects weren't that bad such as the fighting scenes and Killau's electricity. The characters were the same from the series except for couple of new introduced characters which were all meh. This movie had too many flaws and the dialogue was just so cliche.
Overall an ok movie I wouldn't watch it again though.

This movie was amazing. I finished watching HxH back in 2014 but for some reason I never watched the 2 movies. It was great to hear all the soundtracks again and see the characters not to mention seeing Netero fight again, I thought I would never see it again.
The movie was almost non stop action for it's entire duration, with pretty good looking animation btw and much better than the first movie. In the first movie the characters were empty shells that just looked like Gon and Killua but here we actually had Gon acting as Gon. Hisoka was kinda just standing around doing nothing though.
The only criticism I have is that the ending felt a bit weird with Gon being able to easily overcome everything just because he's the protagonist, they should have made Netero be the one to finish things…

Don't watch this if you love HxH. This is like watching someone butcher your favorite series. It's all the HxH characters with NONE of the flavor. The story is basic as fuck, and extremely predictable and boring. The reason why HxH was so gripping was because it deviated from this and had a fun spin. Even down to the very art. The same animation was used twice. It was a put off because it shows how little went into this. The way they drew Killua and Gon is remarkably different. You can tell the quality is thrown out the window. The sound design pales greatly in comparison as well. This film is a gem, a masterpiece. Every Hunter x Hunter fan will be pleased with the great result, but you can also watch it without being a fan, it's easy to follow the plot.
Once again, the best friends, Gon and Killua, are the clear protagonists, with an acceptable participation for Kurapika, and as usual, a minor presence for Leorio. There are also familiar faces such as Netero, Hisoka, Zushi, Wing or Biscuit.
The story is well elaborated. Many things happen all the time, you will not be bored. The combats (one of the strengths of Hunter x Hunter) combine strategy with strength, which makes them especially interesting.
On a design level, it's excellent, as is the 2011 version. The music accompanies the fights and other events well.

After the mild let down that was the first movie; a let down in a sense of expecting way too much after experiencing the marvelous Anime series, tackling the second movie was approached with a careful gaze, no expectations built up for this one, a harsh lesson I learned in after watching the previous movie indeed.

It's hard to measure up this movie to the main series. Overall, I would recommend this movie if you're looking for more HxH content, but wouldn't mind that it's not something that can top the final arcs of the main series. It's not bad from an "anime movie/spinoff" stand point and better than the other movie, but just okay from a "Hunter x Hunter" stand point.
Story (7/10): Where this falls within the timeline can be a little confusing since its not entirely clear when this takes place. It looks like it takes place between the Greed Island arc & Chimera Ant arc, but the 2 story arcs as so back-to-back that it's hard to fit this story in.

Ok so after reading and watching all of Hunter X Hunter, I decided to watch the Hunter X Hunter movies, I enjoyed Phantome Rouge who was not as good as the source material but still try to make a good story and respect a little the characters, and then i watch this SHIT!
While Hunter X Hunter is most well known for it's impeccable system of power that show us that being a "good" or a "bad" guy doesn't influence your mastery of nen, the on came, at first it could have been a great idea, showing a system of power that is different could have been good, and then they assimilate this to "the power of darkess" and the nen by the power of goofd (not especially said in the movie but HEAVILLY implied) it's the beggining of shit.

The story is nothing to write home about. It's pretty obvious Togashi wasn't involved in this movie because of how flat the plot is. There's nothing particularly surprising or really emotional about this movie. The movie tries really hard to get you to sympathize with the villains but it's very sloppily done. Hunter X Hunter 2: The Last Mission is a sidestory before the Chimera Ant Arc, it begins with a glimpse into chairman Netero's past, a fight and sealing of a new character (Jed) controlling what is often described as the "shadow" to Nen, something known as On.
With this movie compared to "The Phantom Rouge" it feels like they wanted a more serious approach from the beginning. There were very few light moments and comedy spots in this movie. Which to some might serve as something they are happy with the movie exploring more, but with how much HxH i have watched i prefer more of a balance to this.

To be honest, it has been 4 years since I have finished the "Hunter x Hunter (2011)" series, but I have only decided to watch the movies now. I was quite satisfied with the endings, but after a bit of reminiscing, I watched "The Last Mission," and it is not as spectacular and thrilling as the series was because it was very basic.
With the concept of good versus evil and with Jed releasing all the criminals to defeal all the Hunters in the first few minutes of the scene, I was actually reminded of the stories behind Thor and Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Despite its basicness, "The Last Mission" is a sweet edition that reminds me of how strong the bonds between the characters are especially when every character had a cute, unique role.

I think this is a really good story, if your gonna understand it more logically. The thing that they wanted to tell us is really inspiring. People did not like the ending because tall the unbelievable things ended up by "Friendship". Well I think is not the friendship they want to tell us. The antagonist is full of hatred, grudge, and revenge, he had been conquered by darkness, and we know the opposite of hatred is love, and love represents light. Killua showed his love to Gon by telling he is his friend. Killua became Gon's light when he was about to be eaten by darkness. The movie shows that hatred can be conquered by love... love is the most powerful weapon in this entire show. And to all the shits out there.

This is the second of the two films based on the 2011 Hunter × Hunter anime, and by all accounts this is the one I should hate the most. Phantom Rouge, which I reviewed a few days ago, tried to emulate what the series did and failed in a non-spectacular, but still jarring way. The Last Mission clearly isn't trying to do what the series did with the shounen genre, but that I think that's why I like it more than I did Phantom Rouge.
