The Ramparts of Ice

The Ramparts of Ice

Introduction

On the surface, high school student Koyuki "Koyun" Hikawa seems unapproachable and terrifying to most other students. In reality, Koyun is just insecure and prone to overthinking due to her uncomfortable experiences in middle school. However, her chance encounter with two boys in school—Minato Amamiya and Youta Hino—sparks a change in her. Like her friend Miki Azumi, the boys are never afraid to approach Koyun and see her for who she really is. Although Koyun starts spending more time with Miki, Minato, and Youta, she finds herself torn between her newfound bliss and her fear of getting too attached to others. Meanwhile, each of her friends quietly struggles with their own challenges. But as the new friend group continues to navigate high school together, Koyun and the others start to break out of their shells and enjoy their adolescence to the fullest. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

The first half of the first season was pretty uninteresting (almost deliberately so), however though it quickly pics up and sucks you into its narrative and leaves you wanting more at the end of each episode and leaves you actually caring about the cast (minato and koyun to be exact) Coming from her other work, its quite apparent that the author has a habit of teasing relationships and using misunderstandings as a plot device. Usually this is something I'm not really a fan of in anime, especially it cases when it leads to nothing (was genuinely rolling my eyes during some scenes). But with how it was handled here the sense of catharsis felt after every resolution genuinely outways any annoyance felt before it.

When it comes to this anime, it's simple: If you love trauma, you're in the right place. If not, get out. I think the art is good. Comedy is great. The main roster (Miki, Koyuki, Yota, Minato) make a great combination. Even Hayato, Daichi, Yuki and Tsukiko make great side characters. Those are solid foundations for the anime, that are, in my opinion, ruined by the story. The anime's 2 main genres are Drama and Romance but I feel like it's 80% Drama and 20% Romance. The anime is 14 episodes long yet somehow every 2-3 episodes someone, or something comes along to trigger a trauma response to one of the main roster, if not multiple. Nobody ever gets a moment's respite to enjoy any positive developments. There's always, and I mean ALWAYS something negative that comes and shatters it. That's…

I enjoyed this anime overall. My 2nd favorite male lead and the main female lead were really cute together😍.I also liked that the anime was only 14 episodes,so it didn't feel too long or dragged out.The story had some interesting moments, and I liked seeing how the characters interacted with each other. But honestly,I really didn't like the 1st male lead. Some of his decisions were frustrating for me and made it hard to enjoy his character. The 2nd male lead was much more likable in my opinion.Overall, it was a decent watch and I enjoyed the characters and romance, even though I had mixed feelings about some parts.

As for my opinion on the first season of the anime "Koori no Jouheki", I found the series to be a solid romantic comedy featuring serious storylines centered on the past trauma of the protagonist, Koyuki Hikawa, who shields herself behind an ice wall to avoid being hurt again. Beyond Koyuki’s main arc, supporting characters like Miki and Minato also have their own storylines dealing with the challenges they face. The visual style is understated and realistic, fitting the anime's atmosphere perfectly, and the music is great, especially the ending theme, which effectively builds suspense at the end of each episode. Ultimately, I give this season a 9/10, for me, it was a real gem of this year's spring season. I honestly preferred it to Seihantai na Kimi to Boku, which is a pleasant, sweet rom…

The Ramparts of Ice - Hardened ice walls of misunderstanding, awaiting to be knocked down, one column at a time. I get it, you get it, we all do in some shape or form. Misunderstandings act as silent wedges in human relationships, often transforming minor miscommunications into deep emotional divides. When individuals interpret words or actions through the lens of their own assumptions, unaddressed misinterpretations breed resentment, mistrust, and distance. Over time, these uncorrected errors erode foundation of empathy, turning former allies into strangers and making clear, open dialogue essential for preserving meaningful connections. But what if, rather trying to fight it, there's a mutual being in wanting to understand somebody else better, and even have brighter days than lulling ov…

I have to say I’m surprised. I certainly would’ve never predicted that I’d like a high school romance as much as I liked this one. This story managed to be just the right amount of cute and silly. It was fun, lightweight (in a good way), dare I say fresh?, and adorable. I clicked on The Ramparts of Ice and was fully ready to consider it my new watch-while-eating show, but I somehow got hooked on the story on the way. I haven’t been a fan of shoujos these days, and I certainly ain’t a consumer of high school romance, whatever the media (often too immature). But as I kept saying to my invisible audience that I was NOT the target audience for this show anytime it went down the cringe-and-exaggerated-teen-problems road…. I realized that my recurrent giggles (Yota… all his fault) were NOT e…

Koori no Jouheki touches on subjects that I genuinely find interesting and sensitive, and I can absolutely see what the story was trying to do. The characters have their own insecurities, emotional baggage, and difficulties connecting with others, which should have been exactly the kind of thing I enjoy. But somehow… I just couldn't connect with the anime itself. And that's frustrating because I don't even have a specific thing I can point at and say, "this is what ruined it for me." I understood the themes, I found some of the topics interesting, and I could appreciate what the story was trying to explore. But emotionally, there was always a distance between me and the characters. Maybe it simply wasn't the right story for me, and that's okay. Sometimes an anime can have all the ingredien…

The Ramparts of Ice was easily one of my favorite romance anime this season. I really loved how natural the characters and their relationships felt, especially the emotional moments and character development. The slower romance made everything feel more meaningful and kept me invested throughout the entire season. The opening and ending were also huge highlights for me. Both songs fit the atmosphere of the anime incredibly well, and I genuinely never wanted to skip either of them. The visuals and music perfectly captured the feeling of the series and made the experience even better. Overall, this anime had everything I wanted from a romance: lovable characters, great chemistry, emotional moments, beautiful music, and a story that kept me invested. I’m definitely going to miss it and I ca…

I really enjoyed the first 10 episodes. The slow burn romance, the character development, the emphasis on the beauty of friendship. However there are many unresolved situations that I wish that they had explored more. It was very unfair for viewers to sit through 14 episodes with so many questions without an answer. I hope that there's a second season and that this was not only a way to get us to purchase the original books so we can know the answers. I understand the commercial side of it but ending it without any answers is really unfair. However, the character development is very solid and it touches topics that are very relatable such as bullying which can be sensitive to some viewers. What I love the most is the humour and the celebration of friendship, the chemistry between the cha…

This is seriously some of THE best romance shtuff I've ever seen. For context (and I find this to be very important to actually see if you'll like something), I love Blue Box and Bokuyaba, and really didn't like Kaoru Hana. This is more dramatic and focused than Bluebox, less comedic than Bokuyaba, and just straight up better than Kaoru Hana in everything but animation, lol. Now, let me get my glaze out. I bounced off the show at episode 2 for some reason. Couldn't tell you why anymore, something about the setup seemed slightly generic perhaps, but once I gave it another go I got about as hooked as you can get. This show hit right in my sweetspot in every aspect. It's got drama but it isn't heavy or melodramatic and every inner conflict makes sense, it's got the fuzzy stuff and the heart…

This anime is very endearing to me, not because of the storyline, the plot or the characters, but more of the themes in central messages that it gives you. I constantly saw myself nodding every single time a character said something that was very important and very smart. I am very excited to see what season two holds, because I felt like they did not get enough of the romance aspect in this anime. But back to back, I did see myself, gasping at many parts, and most things were a little bit interesting. But other than that, if you’re looking to find an anime, that’s just about highschoolers dealing with crushes and also coming down to surprising resolutions about their own psych, this definitely can be the “rom”-com for you. (P.S; I hate how that one red haired character had braids that’s…

Like you and I are polar opposites the author has gone 2 for 2 - absolutely incredible anime that is a different tone compared to its polar opposite- imo it’s much more realistic and mature - it can get slightly tedious with the amount of miscommunications but those things tend to happen quite a lot in real life - started off hating the minato but as the plot progressed I started to quite like their dynamic together but as always I tend to prefer the side couple - absolutely love yota and mikis development and can’t wait to see how it all progresses in season 2

Personally I am a big fan of the Anime and I can't wait for Season 2 to air soon! The characters were facing proper and realistic issues in their past and in the present. Some of the topic hit rather close to home but that made it the more relatable in my eyes. The characters themselves also developed nicely throughout the season and made some proper and good changes and started reflecting better on their own actions. On top of that the art style is really beautiful to look at. Its not the typical style but that makes it stand out even more. Glad the wait to season 2 isnt too long! Can't wait to see how it continues.

Amazing. Inspiring. Just what I needed. This anime absolutely had everything I enjoy as a romance anime fan. We had great characters. We had amazing storylines. Flawless transition between these storylines. The pacing and direction of the anime was top notch. The character design was simple yet very visually pleasing. Even though it followed common romantic themes it still felt like a very fresh story. It also broke away from generic romance molds that are in the industry today. I could go on and on about what makes this anime great(and part of that is that the romantic story type was one of my favorites) but I don’t want to spoil any of the perfection that is the ramparts of ice. Kocha Agasawa has an absolutely incredible feel for writing heartwarming and very relatable characters. He…

The anime has a compelling narrative pattern whereas characters' traumas are only portrayed and dissected throughout the series as events trigger emotional responses in them. This brings to the audience the feeling of actually slowly getting to know them as if they were real people caught in dynamics they themselves aren't always fully aware of (or not rarely misunderstand) from the beginning and hence develop organically throughout the story (together with their relationships). The issue though is how unbelievablely self-aware its entire cast is. In real life, most people — even with therapy — take many years in order to even basically connect past events to how they behave (and/or self-sabotage) today. In this show every major boundary or emotional issue is solved with a conversation;…

This show is heavily recommended, more of a romantic drama than a romcom though. It stands out in a sea of romances because 0ne- It explores romantic love, not just the cute bubbly relationship that works, but the ugly where dating happens between ppl with very different views on what they want from each other. Which is very realistic. And second,- it leaves the mold of marketable romcom. The characters aren't tropey, aren't supposed to be likeable, have genuine flaws that lead them to make mistakes. Instead they make you think, what is the reason he is like this? Is what I am hearing really true? Is he right or is she wrong? And the answer to that is everyone in this story is wrong in some ways, and right in others, so you get such varying reactions to the story and the characters. Othe…

I really enjoyed this anime BUT I had two things that I think could be better. First things first I felt like Koyuns love plot at the end really slowed down without a huge reason and I kinda wished there would be more of it~ on its place they just put over and over the same embaressing situation between her and her love interest and that kinda was making me annoyed. The second thing that I did not like and the reason I writing this review is that the season ended without any answers~ it just ended before anything was resolved between characters ~ there was beginning then the climax and then the season ended without the plot ending... So I like the anime but before second season I cannot recommend it to anyone because of the lack of resolution

FUCK MOMOKO. I WANT HER TO BURN. Lots of character development with antagonists that feel real. All around a well played out anime that builds suspense and makes you angry at said antagonists. Little saddened to have to wait for season 2 but the anticipation is high. Not everything is sunshine and rainbows in ramparts of ice; a lot of realistic events happen instead of the typical everyone lived happily ever after. This anime isn’t really like polar opposites that one is more fluff and slice of life oriented. Both are good but I can see why someone would avoid this if they didn’t like polar opposites since they’re written by the same mangaka. Koyun is so hot

The Ramparts of Ice stands as a strong entry into the romcom/love polygon genre with a cast of delightfully fun and complex characters to explore. Koyuki’s titular emotional ice wall that she puts up between her and those around her is intriguingly intricate both in its activating mechanisms and in how that wall gradually morphs and weakens over time as she gets to know the people around her and starts to realize some of the hypocrisies in how she acts towards them. The exploration of the boundary between friendship and romantic interest, as well as how others perceive said relationships simply because of standard heteronormative social dynamics, made the many different bonds formed, strengthened, and broken as the series progresses infinitely fascinating to follow. With this being yet ano…
