For the people who worship the OVA and can’t accept changes, this review is not for you.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a story filled with rich characters and philosophy. It’s realistic to the point where you’ll never look at life the same again after you’ve completed it, even though only four seasons right now have been animated (still enough to pack a punch). There’s two protagonists and they’re different in worldviews and views of war. You won’t get tired of one because the other exists.
This anime explores every corner of humanity through its cast. There are noble people, people who act horribly because they think they can offset worse people, and people who try to reconstruct things that are impossible — all set at odds with each other, and all dragging the universe towards what…

I don’t know why many people don’t like this remake of LoGH, because I found it really enjoyable and if I would have the original a 10/10 this one is a solid 9/10. the graphic is very modern and it shows you the “science fiction” side of the story, while the original is more focused on static scenes during battles. plus it has a more modern way to portrait characters, and it’s very similar to the book written by yoshiki tanaka. it conveys emotion though not in the dramatic and intense way as the original ova. I really did like this a lot. more light and enjoyable then the ova, it has many pros and some cons. I still believe the first is unbeatable

Very rarely do I get upset when watching an anime. Regardless of it is bad, I can normally get through it without actually being upset at the decisions made in production. This is one of those exceptions. Having the OVA being one of my all time favorites, I was already coming into this remake with relatively low expectations based on what I'd heard about it, and even then I was extremely disappointed. This is a poor bastard shadow of the 1980s OVA, and you should not watch this and instead go watch that.
Worldbuilding: 1/10
It is incredibly ironic that this gets such a low score even though its source material is so good. But this anime visually and narratively skips over almost everything interesting in the world, such as political events, narrating every minute detail of the world, as…

I can’t believe I never heard of this whole series before, I binged it all and loved it. It’s almost a cross between code geass and death note but without any magic. This show watches unlike a typical anime, unpredictable, fast and well paced with no unnecessary stretches of drama.
Also great animation quality, art, voice acting, likable characters;I really hope this show continues to be made. It’s my number one space related show for sure! There’s only about 48 episodes so far but if it had 1000 episodes I would happily watch it all. This is one of those shows I wish would never end and now I’m just rambling to try and fill the text requirements.

First things first: I don’t really consider myself a seasonal watcher. Sure, I’d watch one or two shows per season, but I’m fairly adverse to binge watching multiple anime at a time. Funny enough, I used to be an avid seasonal watcher about 3 years ago. Probably was a mistake, because I got completely burnt out with disappointments after disappointments to the point where I even took a short break from anime entirely. It also really didn’t help that my tastes were starting to see changes during that time. I got to the point where I was sick and tired of all the clichés, exposition dumps, overly dramatic characters, numerous ecchi scenes, and just flat out badly written elements that plagued the anime industry.
But alas, I did watch an anime during the Spring season. I watched three in fac…

This is a remake of the original 1980s OVA series (which in turn was based on the novel series) of Legend of the Galactic Heroes. If you remove "Legend of the Galactic Heroes" and made this it's own sci-fi anime it would be worth a watch but for someone who saw the original it can't compare.
For one LotGH had a score that was entirely classical musical (with no exception except the endings and openings). They had a classical piece for almost every scene and it was all appropriate. It never felt forced or pretentious either.
Instead Die Neue These has its own score and it's really boring and at times awkward. One of the major appeals of this show is the music and it got ruined.
Also the character designs were changed severely. It seems like the demographic of this remake is for girls and…

First time watcher.
It is very good. The score is the result of purists who are upset that the show is getting a reboot when there is a perfectly fine OVA adaptation already available. Fact is, there is nothing wrong with this adaptation. In many ways it is the superior adaptation. My suggestion? Start with this and then watch the OVA series. You are going to want to sort of "review" the series following some key events anyways, so why not let this remake tempt you?
As for the story, it is incredible. Something truly transcendent in it's messaging. Stands out alongside other masterpieces such as Berserk and Vinland Saga (and Monster so I am told, it's next on the list). The characters and events will have you in tears from their execution and relevance to modern events. 20th century war…

The biggest draw is the scale of the conflict and relatively mature treatment of how our societal structures, government, and wars interact to produce history and historical figures, with Characters written well enough to handle such a setting. However, you will have to overlook the human bowling pins that are littered throughout the story to triple underscore all-caps confirm the striking difference between the brain mass of the main characters and your average Homo Space-iens.
To get through the basics, the sound is brilliant, the dialogue is top-notch, the dub is excellent. The character designs are more realistic, which matches well with the story. I enjoyed the show. I even enjoyed the Star Trek "captain's log" feel of the narrated segments, coming from someone who is firmly in the "…

LotGH is an absolute masterpiece of space sci-fi drama, and if you haven't, I highly and eagerly recommend the 10-volume novels. The novels are filled to the brim with details and descriptions that explain the inner workings of the LotGH universe deeper.
Die Neue These (DNT) is a re-adaptation of the original novels, and Kaikou adapts all but the last two chapters of Volume 1: Dawn, thereby leaving Kaikou with a cliff-hanger ending and Seiran completing the adaptation with its first episode.
To preface this, I have yet to see the original 1980s OVAs and Movies, so I'm only going to compare Kaikou to Vol. 1. I've both read Vol. 1 and watched Kaikou in alternating sequences to be able to point out the differences between the two. It was a pretty tiring experience and I wouldn't recommend t…

This is more of a review for both seasons, given how the start of season 2 is what the end of season 1 should be and the stories are otherwise so connected that you probably couldn't tell where one ended and the other began.
This review won't spoil anything though.
My biggest weakness with anime is that I really can't sit down and watch a sub. I am far more willing to put up with the same 10 voice actors providing diminished dialouge in every anime I watch simply because I have an autistic lack of attention. However, this HIGHLY underrated remake is about to help me overcome this weakness. I simply cannot let myself undermine just how awesome this anime is.
Despite its slow moments and weaker first season, I found myself completely gripped by this intergalactic sci-fi war story. At fir…

I've watched the original Ginga Eiiyuu Densetsu series and everything else that followed.
Visuals:
1) Obviously an anime released in 2018 will look a lot more polished than an anime released in 1988. I really liked the animation of space battles. A lot of CGI work was put into vehicles but not in a way that it would completely break immersion.
2) Most side characters got their character design completely changed and I cannot be happy about this.
Audio:
1) The original anime and this remake have 30 years between them but most of the original cast is still active and doing voice work. However, not one of them got the chance to perform again. I honestly cannot understand or respect this decision.
2) To not have the legendary Horikawa Ryo as Reinhard and Hironaka Masashi as Kircheis wa…

After just finishing the first season of this show, I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't have high hopes for this anime, and it definitely got me interested right after the first 2 episodes. I never saw the original, but seeing the high praise it received, I decided to give this version, with up to date animation, a try.
It's definitely not a typical anime, and dives deep into aspects of society and government. It shows a society with democracy, a society ruled by dictatorship and tyranny. What I love the most about this show, is despite being in the future, it makes social aspects feel very accurate and real. Such things like, corruption and uprising are big in this anime. This might not be for everyone, not everyone watches anime to see a struggle in idealism, or how people believe soc…

I haven't watched the original LoGH anime but I have to admit, this anime left a good impression on me. I am a gundam fan after all.
Sound: 9/10
Ima start with sound cos this is one of the best aspects of this anime. The sound, especially the opening, was very enjoyable. I usually listen to the opening twice or thrice and just skip it in the following episodes. BUT, this one was different. At the last episode, I was literally singing "Binary!!!!" while the opening played. The opening is also quite deep and reflects the series in a way. The ending was slow and a little solemn, showing the true nature of war. The sound effects helped me to imagine the atmosphere in space and really reflects the mood. Though sound can't travel in space.
Art: 9/10
Its great. Attention to detail. Splendid sc…

This series had the deck stacked against it from the get go, the original 1988 OVA series (which I have seen twice at time of writing) is one of the finest pieces of media I’ve ever watched. So immediately this series had one hell of a legacy to live up to. Did it manage it? Well yes and no. On the one hand I love the new visual style and incredible opening theme from the always amazing Hiroyuki Sawano, on the other hand I was disappointed he didn’t compose the whole score it would have greatly benefited from his genius, but the music by Sin is no slouch. But perhaps the biggest question was how on Earth was it going to cram 110 OVAs into 12 Episodes? The answer? It didn’t. Hence the fact we have 3 movies afterwards to continue the story.
Overall, I’d still recommend this series as it’s c…

I understand this anime might not be for everyone. Those who have loved the previous adaptation might be a little bewildered by the new animation and the fast developement of the events when compared to the previous version. On the other hand, those who have no previous contact with the franchise and approach this anime expecting what modern shounen shows usually have to offer, may find it disappointing as well, because this anime is anything but common.
Animation and Art:
The battles are not the most epic. The names of the characters are not the easiest to remember. CG animation is used, and that's often annoying for those of us accustomed to "regular" animation. But honestly, I'm finding it very hard to find negative aspects to enumerate as possible reasons that would make people dra…

Something that needs to be said about this series before anything else: this is not a remake, it is another adaptation of the book series by Yoshiki Tanaka. That needs to be said because it is not seeking to be a remake, and referring to it as such, and making the due evaluations, is simply incorrect. It must be considered its own separate work, independent of the old. With that said...
"Legend of the Galactic Heroes" is, of course, considered a classic, and rightfully so, with its expansive, and intriguing cast of characters, its high stakes story, intelligent and sometimes provocative themes and discussions, and a setting that suits everything. It's left its mark on the science fiction genre, and I'd be surprised if a number of other anime didn't take influence from this one. The new se…

Finding out there's an english dub of the new Legend of the Galactic Heroes anime has finally got me to watch the series in it's entirety. I know, unpopular opinion, but I tend to prefer english dubs over the Japanese originals, cause why not.
So about the series. Everything is technically there, it covers the first book in the novel series, which mostly serves as a set-up to the rest of the story. We get to know Yang Wen-li and Reinhard von Lohengram, who are both enticing characters and serve as a good contrast of major actors in the war between the Free Planets Alliance and Galactic Empire.
The ups of the show are, that the world-building is there, the main characters are established finely and the initial skirmishes between the Free Planets Alliance and the Empire are interesting and…

It's always interesting when you poke your head into something that your own culture, even a subculture like anime enthusiasts, tends to go unregarded, but in its home culture is considered an essential masterwork. I've started dipping my toes into the "Lupin III" franchise, a hugely influential and fun thing that most anime fans barely know exists, and one of these days I know I'm going to have to try "Hajime no Ippo", but perhaps more obscure than either of those series is "Legend of the Galactic Heroes", an epicly long OVA series from the 1980's based on science fiction novel series. "Die Neue These" is a remake, trying to bring this classic into a new generation, so it seems like a perfect jumping on point...but is it?
I'm going to be up front with the fact that, while I love science…

This is the first time I've watched Legend of the Galactic Heroes (LOTGH) anything, so I can't really say if it was a good remake or not. I did, however, compare it a lot to Code Geass (CG). Even if I heard (by "heard," I meant randomly googled) that CG was actually inspired by elements of LOTGH and Death Note, because Die Neue These came after it and I watched LOTGH after, it feels the other way around. I am reviewing the 2018 release as a stand alone anime, never mind its supposedly epic history (the 1988 version of 110 episodes has a 9.11 score). Either way, adaptations are not supposed to be dependent on their originals.
The Galactic Empire, which was born from the iron first of a tyrannical emperor (CG reference: If this does not spell out Britannia and Emperor Charles zi Britannia,…

The reason this show was not successful is not because it was bad. Personally, I actually enjoyed it and would recommend it to people if the original did not exist. But it does. And to make a long story short, this show is just a slightly inferior version of the original.
What made this show unsuccessful was the conceptual planning of the show as a remake and certain creative choices by Production IG.
See, the problem in remaking the first 12 episodes in Legend of the Galactic Heroes is that these episodes are objectively the least interesting and eventful part in the show. They quite literally took the worst part of the show and made it into a series. I get the feeling that if this remake had been a COMPLETE remake of the entire original series, by the end of its run we would have a ver…
