I cannot believe this is a One Piece movie. It’s far beyond your average shōnen and presents deep-cutting, even twisted takes on camaraderie, courage, and the genre as a whole. It is genuinely disturbing at times, and instills real fear.
The premise is fun and starts off happily in typical One Piece fashion. The Straw Hats travel to a new island, but it certainly isn’t what it seems. The unraveling and buildup is paced skillfully and the story is written very well. The Straw Hats bring their old antics, but it feels elevated. It blends eeriness, intensity, and comedic relief with ease.
The animation is unique and it’s a refreshing style. The graphics are indeed old, but have a charm to…

Ok, I'm so confused. This is basically 2 completely different movies, divided right down the middle. And it was sudden too, like a light switch. The first half is genuinely awful, so much so that I was making a list of everything I didn't like about it because I expected the entire movie to be bad, and even with only the first half the list is still pretty long. But then, all of a sudden, the second half of the movie is genuinely amazing. The story takes a hard left turn in the best way possible becoming so much more dark, serious, and heart-wrenching all of a sudden, and even starts blending in some psychological and body horror elements. Even the animation gets progressively better throughout the movie. It's still not amazing by the end, but it's way better than the unfinished looking sl…

one piece: baron omatsuri and the secret island Is what happens when you go off script and give a talented director the ability to tell the story he's want, with the characters We enjoy. it is amazing.
From the first minute you know something is different, the animation and character style is something distinct from the usual one piece we know, but it works well with what the story is trying to tell, and I would even say that the story would not work as well, If it was the usual character design we see in the TV show.
The movie feels like a dream, in the Beginning it is full of smiles and laughs and happy moments, but the longer it go on, the more Small Things begin to crumple and you realize that this is not a dream, This is a nightmare that is happening.

Baron Omatsuri was a one of a kind masterpiece. The market is flooded with "slop" shounen movies where every popular character shows up and it's simply a big promotional action scene the entire movie. Dragon Ball does it. Naruto does it. My Hero Academia does it. Even some other One Piece movies do it such as STAMPEDE or RED. They have some flimsy reason every fan favorite shows up at one location and fights some omega-tier villain, the hero usually gets a one-time power up they can never use again after that fight to win and it's just fan service porn.
Baron Omatsuri is unique in actually having a plot, having unique animation and exploring psychological themes such as the nature of friendship and feelings of loss and despair, rather than just OOOO THIS VILLAIN SOOOOO STRONG. You also qu…

One Piece and psychological horror? Two things I never thought I'd hear in the same sentence, but here we are.
I was first introduced to Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island when I saw clips of some of it's creepiest moments; it seemed interesting and equally horrifying, so I came into the movie with high expectations. I'd be lying if I said I enjoyed the entire thing though. I was definitely underwhelmed for the first half of the movie; which was reminiscent of the Long Ring Long Land arc, that was ending around when this movie was released.
The bait and switch storytelling really caught me. The lighthearted first half of the movie leads you to believe the rest of it will be the same, until the mood changes; fast. It goes from being a typical story of the Straw Hats having a fun adventu…

A One Piece movie with a darker atmosphere and unique story.
Beautiful animation with an artistically pleasing style. I loved every bit of the movie and enjoyed the different dynamics shown between every Straw Hat members, showing a realistic display of conflict without purposefully turning it into a comedy sketch.
Loved the horror elements sprinkled into the mix and how the movie kept pushing the protagonists limits.
Highly recommend the movie, already for being so vastly different from the other One Piece movies. It's also enjoyable for people only starting with the Manga/Anime.
The animation style is simplistic yet unique on it's own.

I mostly watched this because Mamoru Hosoda directed it. He has such a distinct style which I find breathtaking.
My expectations weren´t that high. I haven´t watched One Piece since elementary school. But at that time it was probably the first thing I would look forward to when I came home. Funnily enough, the movie is set around the time I stopped watching and it was kind of nostalgic seeing all these characters again.
Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island follows a very basic shonen anime setup. It´s a story about friendship as well as not being able to let go and sets it in the Carribean background of One Piece. While the story was very by the book there were some surprises tone-wise. Especially the ending scene looked like something out of a Junji Ito Manga which I did not expect at al…

Damn ok they actually cooked with a One Piece movie. Didn’t think the movies would get good until I got to the more modern ones but this was really good. The animation is in a completely different style to the original anime and it’s a nice breath of fresh air and it really compliments the scenes in the amazing third act. The story in this is actually interesting and plays off of the already built dynamics of the characters and then culminates beautifully in the third act. All the movies so far have been missing a villain that’s memorable or even good but this one delivers with one that has good story and is actually a threat to the crew. While the first two acts in this are nothing incredible they had funny moments and nice animation and then in the third act things take a complete turn g…

This movie is great but definitely different from what we've come to expect from One Piece.
First of all I think a lot of people don't like the changes. Like the animation or slight differences in characterization, but I honestly love it. Knowing this movie was directed by Mamuro Hosoda (Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, etc.) was what convinced me to watch it, because he can do no wrong. I love how this movie was animated and the creative liberties taken with the character designs and animation style. It looks amazing visually, the backgrounds are super well made and very detailed compared to the main One Piece series. A quick compliment to the music as well. While most of it is the usual One Piece music we're used to, it's remade and sounds more orchestral and definitely, in th…

I was excited for this one as soon as I started it. I'd known Mamoru Hosoda directed one of the One Piece movies; I just hadn't been sure which one. But I recognized his style immediately. And apart from a few jarring CG moments and a couple awkward scenes where the backgrounds looked super realistic but the characters were pure cartoon, this movie looked great. For what was out at the time-- I believe this movie is meant to fall around episode 220-230-- I'd say this was the best One Piece had ever looked. (And if Hosoda has never done a zombie movie, he should totally look into it-- those creepy scenes where the life was sucked out of some of the characters were phenomenal.) So no, it wasn't perfect all the way through, but I know it's the places where the animation was really great that'…

Non-Spoiler Summary: Watch it if you want a dark twist on One Piece, but its not for everyone. I'm not even going to go in depth with this review. The real attraction of this movie starts after the first 30 minutes. Watch it for yourself. It is very subjective in terms of enjoyment. Its not canon but watch it at least after the Alabasta Arc.
Story: 7
This story is not for everyone. The story is simple with its thrills and overall feel while watching it however feels a bit lacking in my opinion.
Art: 8
Again, not for everyone. This is not the usual One Piece art style. In my opinion it suits the movie well.
Sound: 8
The sound in this movie was a big contribution to the aura this movie had. The music played when it needed and stopped when it needed to let the voice actors shine.
Characte…

Hi, your resident #1 One Piece fan here. I've started going through all the One Piece movies after dropping the series, simply because it's far too long. I love the world they've built, and I really like a lot of the characters. So, watching what is essentially a 90 minute arc kind of sounds perfect for me, right?
The first 5 movies I think have ranged from great to okay with Dead End being the standout thus far. It is very much a typical One Piece fun-filled action movie with a good story told in such a short time. Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island is not your typical One Piece story, it is far from it. At the very beginning you can notice a change in the animation, not just to how they're drawn but the way they move, and that isn't a bad thing at all. I've never been on…

I'm watching all the films in order of release and I must say that this film exceed my expectations. Most of the reviews of this film describe as a dark film in comparison to others. The description is more than enough to catch the attention of any fan, although the greatness of the film lies in more aspects than in its dark atmosphere.
The animation cannot be more different than what any One Piece fan (pr even just a casual fan) is used to. It remind me sort of to the first films of Digimon or even to Monogatari, even though this is more my opinion. It is quite shocking at first, but it matches the narrative that we are going to be told perfectly.
The story starts with the usual plot of One Piece stories, but the plot twists in terms of what we could except are darker and more focused on…

Call me a cheater, but I saw this movie without seeing the whole anime first. Why? Because I heard the animation was ambitious & the story was darker/different from regular One Piece. Truth be told, I've seen a handful of episodes with my One Piece-addicted friend, & it felt like torture. I gave this film a chance in hopes that it was "unique".

The main driving force that carried me through this journey was the art. The character designs often annoyed me because of how god-awfully ridiculous they looked; though, others may find it humorous. However, the backgrounds were nicely detailed, & the characters moved fluidly, especially Luffy with his noodle arms. Some creative animation techniques & odd CGI are thrown in, but they mix better than water & oil.

So, is the story dark? Kinda. I…

This movie was everything I hoped for and a little more, it's probably my favourite One Piece movie. It has its fair share of good and bad aspects, but the good stuff was a lot better then the bad stuff was bad.
Positives:
The art style is quite different, it felt like a really fluid wavy version of the early One Piece style and I thought it was great.
The tension was amazing, it felt very natural for the most part and when it hit it hit hard.
The mystery is really interesting, it doesn't exactly tell you what is going on but you piece it together gradually.
The villian is great, he's scary and punchable but he's also sympathetic and in denial.
Neutral:
The character writing was really great but it failed to resolve certain plot threads, a simple few line…

Wow, out of the 6 OP movies I've seen this one takes the cake. Very unique art-style paired with a dark and disturbing plot line not seen in OP alot. Nami looked so pretty especially! And the 3-D backgrounds paired with the water color backgrounds made this a visually enjoyable piece.
*SPOILERS*
The theme here is evil covering up as innocent. The little shoulder flower was such a fun little character and it's transformation was so creepy. Loved it. But I didn't understand the plot entirely.
Atleast the background of the island and the antagonist. From what I can tell they crash landed here, all his nakama were killed except him. I guess there was some evil plant like thing infecting the island and infected him? Or maybe his mindset created this evil being and it transformed into a fest…

This movie was very interesting. It did have the traits of One Piece, but the direction und scenery was very different, which was an excellent choice because it worked in this movie's favour.
As I mentioned the art is really different from the "usual" One Piece and it was at times imo really creepy at the other half of the movie.
What can I say, this is a must watch for any OP Fan and even for any that haven't watched/read OP yet. It shows One Piece at a different approach.
Had a fun evening with this film and because I personally haven't disliked anything about this movie it's a 10/10 for me straight up!

Damn that final battle was Berserk tier horrifying
The art is great, most shots could make great wallpapers, the vilain goes from ok to absolutely terrifying and the side character are endearing
I like to keep my reviews short so the rest of the review is only so I pass the dumb review length rule
I cannot think or comprehend of anything more cucked than having a daughter. Honestly, think about it rationally. You are feeding, clothing, raising and rearing a girl for at least 18 years solely so she can go and get ravaged by another man. All the hard work you put into your beautiful little girl - reading her stories at bedtime, making her go to sports practice, making sure she had a healthy diet, educating her, playing with her. All of it has one simple result: her body is more enjoyable f…

This is the sixth One Piece movie, theoretically taking place after the Navarone arc and before they go to Water 7. Once again, it takes place around the same time as the previous two movies because the anime was by now slow as hell. An interesting thing about it, is how the formula so far was to make each movie being dedicated to a crew member (the first for Usopp, the second for Sanji, the third for Chopper, the fourth for Robin, and the fifth for Zorro). In this case, there wasn’t any focus given to anyone in particular. The hero ends up being the main rival (he is not really a villain) Baron Omatsuri. And if you stretch it, since everything he does is for the sake of his nakama, we could say he is the dark side of Luffy and in a way the movie is a tribute to him and the despair that ca…

I'm writing this review from the perspective of someone who’s always been interested in - and wanted to get round to - watching One Piece, but has yet to do so. I came into this movie not knowing any of the characters, story, or even really what genre the original show was in. “Just pirates” is all I really thought of it, but watched the movie anyway because it’s a work by my favourite director: Hosoda Mamoru. I think the fact I liked it enough to breech my silence and write my first ever review on MAL after over a decade of using the site is an important aspect of what made this movie so good, however. So, without further ado - here’s a brief, spoiler-free review.
The plot is no different from what you’d find in an episodic isekai or monster-of-the-week shounen: it’s not what you watch t…
