Mr. Osomatsu

Mr. Osomatsu

Introduction

The majority of the Matsuno household is comprised of six identical siblings: self-centered leader Osomatsu, manly Karamatsu, voice of reason Choromatsu, cynical Ichimatsu, hyperactive Juushimatsu, and lovable Todomatsu. Despite each one of them being over the age of 20, they are incredibly lazy and have absolutely no motivation to get a job, choosing to live as NEETs instead. In the rare occurrence that they try to look for employment and are somehow able to land an interview, their unique personalities generally lead to their swift rejection. From trying to pick up girlfriends to finding the perfect job, the daily activities of the Matsuno brothers are never dull as they go on all sorts of crazy, and often downright bizarre, adventures. Though they desperately search for a way to improve their social standing, it won't be possible if they can't survive the various challenges that come with being sextuplets! [Written by MAL Rewrite]

** A big disclaimer about this review: I am a big fan of Osomatsu-kun ('66 and '88), and I think this review can basically be dismissed by anyone who experiences Osomatsu for the first time because my opinions are heavily biased. However, if you're like me, a kun fan looking to see if the sequel is worth it, this is for you. If you don't watch Kun first, you will likely like this series more. "How do you adapt a Showa Era anime into the modern age?" a question the first episode asks, and it is one I was certainly curious about myself. And this series had a lot of promise in the first episode. The first episode was one of the only times this show got an audible laugh out of me as it parodies the many tired and pretty terrible tropes modern anime suffer from. I was excited it was self-awar…

Osomatsu-san may be hard to get into at first, but after diving into its waters one will find a lot of enjoyment and relaxation out of it. CHARACTERS = 20/25 The series' protagonists are Osomatsu, Karamatsu, Choromatsu, Ichimatsu, Jyushimatsu, and Todomatsu. Side characters include their parents Matsuyo and Matsuzou along with Iyami, Chibita, Hatabou, Dekapan, Dayon, and Totoko. As you can see, there are already many characters about which comedic stories can be written. After getting the hang of each sextuplet's identity, one also finds one or a few sextuplets that they relate to the most. Each of the sextuplets is rather unique and they often play off each other, much like manzai, and often two of them are in a scenario as the stars while others play supporting characters. This allows…

Never knew I would love it this much. Osomatsu-san is clearly now one of my favorite anime. I already like a lot comedy anime but damn this one hits hard. I went from not knowing how to differentiate them to owning all 6 nendos and translating stuff. It’s an understatement to say I enjoyed it Story It is a comedy focused anime so of course the story is nothing too extra. It is more about how the jokes are written, and there are mostly all very well made. Speaking of writing, shout-out to the french translator for crunchyroll who made an amazing version, I was very impressed Art Fucking love it. I usually love retro styles remade to today’s standards but man this one is so good. The colors, the designs, the animation, everything is so pretty to look at it is astonishing. Sound Let’s talk…

This show to me is what jojo is to jojo fans aside from the fact of jojo overtaking the internet from its memes while osomatsu-san being the anime which is least discussed, but what they do have in common is that they both have a very specific niche of audience (which also makes it harder to recommend), So people would either drop it from the first episode (Like what I did with jojo) Or Love it so much that you feel bad for the series for being so less discussed (Like I feel with Osomatsu-san) what they have done is nothing short of brilliant, Instead of sticking with the old formula they builded upon It. They did a thing that shin-chan can't even dream of... Getting older, I'm sure 500 years from now shin-chan will still be 5 yo the Art was quite unique but wasn't mind blowing but It doe…

As someone who has watched the 1988 version of the Osomatsu series, I admittedly was a bit nervous as to how this adaptation from 2016 would pay off now that the Osomatsu brothers have gotten older and still reportedly have turned into NEETs. In the end, I’m just glad I was proven wrong, since this updated version of the anime managed to shut me up entirely with how very good this was. The 2015-2016 season of this anime would no doubt be one of the biggest surprises as to how eloquently and well-done this version of the anime had turned into. Over the years, the style has evolved immensenly, so the first season would change the course as to how the other two seasons (and movie) would get better as time goes on. There’s not much I can say here that others have not already posted on here,…

This was a Tobuscus adventure! I can’t believe to describe how good season 2 was. It had me chortling so hard, I couldn’t get Gryphon to stop barking. He was so mad. I can’t believe Osomatsu got so much development and the plot went a long swimmingly as always. Whenever they’d set up a joke, it always comes round, with many punchlines and many giggles to be had. Each time I’m upset due to past or present allegations, I go to look at this and it gives me and Gabuscus a wry laugh. Audience, this is my top pick. Thank you, Osomatsu san. Bless *your* face.

I found Osomatsu-san to be pretty similar to family guy in a few ways, I'd call Osomatsu-san the Japanese Family guy. Both shows have a similar sense of comedy in a way. Sure, the jokes, gags, and punchlines are completely different, but the one thing that they have in common is that jokes drag on for such a long time. Just like Family Guy, Osomatsu-san has a lot of jokes and scenarios that could have been funny if executed in a timely manner, but instead, some stupid scenario that should have been one minute long goes all the way anywhere from 2 minutes to the entire episode. Plus, when it comes to the "creative" scenarios, just like Family Guy, it's some lame joke/setting that happens to be the basis for the setting that everyone's in for the next 10 minutes. However, just like Family Gu…

A good satirical/dark comedic anime that has a quirky relatable cast. The storyline is interesting itself, despite romance not being in it. There's a lot of references to specific pop cultures, yet even if you don't understand said so reference, the studio still makes the scenes funny and creative. If you want to be excited and have a quick laugh, I'd suggest this. If you want something serious, or expect a romance interest from the main cast, I would not suggest this show. However, I genuinely recommend that you watch it or at least give it a try, because it's something that is genuinely exciting and fresh. It made me, a person who has a hard time showing emotions, feel happy for these characters and have genuine interest in them.

I really enjoyed Osomatsu-san. At first, I was reluctant to start it and confused with all the sextuplets. But it turned out to be a very good show. It was very funny, and it actually had some emotional moments. I really enjoy comedy that actually has moments that make you attached to the characters, like Nanbaka. I'm not usually a big watcher of comedy anime so when I find one I enjoy it's especially rare. The characters were very funny, their unique personality's and problems kept me laughing and crying all the way through. This isn't a show for a younger audience, however. It is full of inappropriate jokes and cursing. Though it looks harmless, it's definitely rated R for a reason. However, it's still a very good show. I even had a bias with the sextuplets, which I didn't expect. (I lov…

After putting it off for a while I've finally come back to write my review of Osomatsu-san, why I absolutely adore this series and why it's my favorite anime of all time. It's a little lengthy, but I hope that this can help explain why I hold this anime so close to my heart. STORY: There really isn't much of a plot in Osomatsu-san, however, it's also that lack of plot that makes it so fun to watch. The main bulk of each episode comes from the characters reacting to their situation as hopeless NEETs and trying to find a way out of their social grave. That isn't to say there is no plot though, while most episodes are standalone and episodic, there is an overarching set of themes about maturing and finding your place in the world. Through each of their failures, it not only leads to humour…

Story 8/10 If you like wacky, random comedy with characters who are bouncing off the walls then this is the anime for you. What I like about Osomatsu-san is how random and unpredictable the story is; for example, there’s an episode where, after a trip to Sea World, Jyushimatsu decides he wants to be dolphin! It really makes you want to keep watching just to see what crazy thing these characters are going do next. Furthermore, throughout the series there’s a running joke where the brothers’ parents tell them to stop being NEETs and find jobs, but they are determined to just be NEETs forever. Even if they do get jobs or find girlfriends, the always screw things up somehow. If there is one thing I don’t like about the story it’s that some of the jokes can be hit and miss. It’s especially…

Osomatsu-san is an anime that captures Humour and Slice Of Life really well. I always find myself crying in laughter at least once when I watch this show. It has a good balance between a proper story and progression alongside the skits in each episode as there are references and such used from episodes previous. It also has characters that are so low that it comes around to be really funny. Once you start this anime, it will strap you in and you will get addicted. The humour is so hilarious at times that I catch myself laughing even after watching it. This is of course my personal taste as I like most internet memes or gags. Honestly though, each skit is so different from the last that you will find at least something that will make you laugh. Even though this show is made up of skits, t…

Osomatsu-san, the best anime I’ve watched. I was entertained during every episode and I am currently waiting for arriving episodes for season two. Story: 9 Story was great, things were all over the place and some episodes didn’t make much sense, but were still comedic. Only but a few episodes kind of connected, the rest were on different topics and themes. It’s basically just these sextuplets, who are unemployed and virgins. It’s a parody of the old show made in the 1900’s. Art: 10 I love the simplistic old 1900’s artsyle, it’s differs from the nowaday highly detailed anime artsyle. It makes it easier for them to animate episodes, and they can get them out quick but still make them enjoying. The artstyle, to me, is just very pleasant to look at, and it’s easy to draw fanart in the style…

Osomatsu-san is at heart a very comedic driven gag anime. Personally I absolutely adore this anime, If I were to rate this based on my personal preferences, it would be a 10/10. My overall rating of 8/10 comes purely from analytical thinking and drawing different perspectives into the picture. Osomatsu-san has very little story and character development going on, this is expected as a gag anime of course, this makes for an easy viewing as no real continuity takes place, with the exception of a handful of jokes that carry over every now and then and the final two episodes, which is shortly lived. Rather the comedy driving the story, Osomatsu takes liberty by having the story drive the comedy, this is used effectively, as the stroies are short lived and the diverse cast of characters’ help…

Short Review Summary: - a few hidden gems in a mostly unfunny show - great performances by voice actors - nothing special or great about art or animation - very hit and miss I feel like I can’t give a proper review of this show because it was a skit comedy show, and with comedy, everything was a hit and miss. With this show, there were many hidden gems, but I am not sure whether one would find it worth it to go through the entire show for those few moments. There were a few parts where I was laughing my head off, but most of the time, the humour fell flat. One episode that stood out to me was the second part of episode 9. That episode was one of the best out of the whole show. It had the spectacular mix of comedy and seriousness which is not usually seen since it’s a self-proclaimed “ga…

Osomatsu-san is a sequel to an older show from the 60s and 80s about sextuplets who still live with their parents at the rip age of 20(give or take). I originally was put off by this series, as I assume others were as well, as the art style was outdated in my mind, but I had heard some good opinions about it. After watching the first episode, which sadly isn't available legally now, I saw the potential in such a show. Now, the first episode may not be available, but there were plenty more gags and jokes to come as the series progressed. Now I should probably get to my actual review. Story: 9 I admit, the story sounds a bit lack luster. Just some NEET brothers all trying to survive and get on their own two feet. There are shows that cover similar premises and would be a lot "easier" to wat…

Tbh, I really like this show. Sure, it doesn't have the best art nor comedy, but it's definitely enjoyable. Story: 7 While the show is mostly silly jokes and some inappropriate jokes here and there (usually the Matsus stripping, something about "old man's ass," or related to sex), there are some angst and sadness. You can relate to some of the characters on a deep level as their sad stories are played. As for the comedy, it's not really funny until you get to know the characters. The only parts of the show's content that made me mad and frustrated is the Iyami Kart and episode 25. Art: 7 The art is quite lazy-looking and simple. It slightly gets better over time, though, in the official art. I like how it is made to imitate the original show's artstyle (Osomatsu-kun), yet modified to fit…

Osomatsu-san is a comedic anime from 2015 to 2016, recently adapted into a manga, brought to us by Pierrot. Yes, the studio that worked on Yu Yu Hakusho & Hikaru no Go. Along with a bunch of stuff I haven't reviewed. It's also set up as a sequel to a manga/anime originally from the 60s. I'll be up front, I haven't seen or read that one, so I won't know how well this one follows it. How does this one compare to Pierrot's other works? Well, let's have a look at it and see. Story: We open with a black and white scene of a group of identical sextuplets being told that they're getting a new anime after their long absence from the air. We'll ignore the fact that identical sextuplets make no sense since it is a comedy. From there, we get a bunch of stand along gag episodes, most of which have m…

Comedy. A notoriously difficult genre to approach, mainly because of its notoriety as a ridiculously subjective area. Sure, to an extent everything is subjective- whether an art style is appealing (also relevent with Osomatsu), whether something is "scary" and what "good" even is. But comedy is especially difficult. Making people cry with laughter is quite the task, and when you've directed an anime like Gintama- renowned for its comedic content- then the task becomes even more difficult because there are certain expectations. If comedy is intended to be the driving force- the "story" itself- then it better measure up or the entire thing will just flop. Osomatsu-san is a funny little series because I'm still not sure whether it worked all that well comedically. I didn't drop it so I can…

What happens when you make 6 lookalike sextuplets that are utter vermins of society (Lazy ass NEETs), place them into a batsh*t insane world, complete with highly contrasting personalities of the 6 thirsty dudes and entertaining as hell side characters? You get Osomatsu-San, A celebration of the late mangaka Fujio Akatsuka, It definitely lives up to the legacy of the apparently Really popular anime of the 80s, and I am definitely sure Akatsuka-san will be really proud of studio Pierrot, the studio known for ninjas in orange jumpsuits getting a prostate exam from their teachers. (a neverending series....) Characters are easily recognizable, even though the brothers look alike, they are very easy to tell who is who. Osomatsu: Selfish bastard who has a bad gambling problem and no logical sen…
