I can understand the appeal and charm a show like Gintama might have for some. It does have a bit of everything: the comedy, the badassery, slice of life, with settings ranging from space and aliens to isekai, breaking the 4th wall and more. 201 episodes and at no time did one feel a lack of content or originality. Its diversity is what defines the series at the cost of its weakest aspect: consistency. Gintama misses a clear goal, a golden thread – or rather, it does not care much about that, as it shamelessly and absolutely ignores what it could grow into. Now, I do know there is a multitude of sequels following the first season and I still very much prefer to believe everything will eventually cumulate into something making all the tedious buildup worth the trouble and time, however, cur…

The best comedy anime I have seen hands down. It does not have the best start but once you keep watching and get familiarized with the characters the show really starts to click. Its surprising how it manages to give so much depth to each character when it has such a large cast. The fact that it can still make a person laugh even a 100 or so episodes in by subverting expectations is proof of a good comedy show.
When the show does get serious though, boy does it get serious. The actual proper story arcs are equally as good as the comedy arcs. It finds the right balance between the two. Gintoki is one of the best shounen protagonists out there. The trio of Gintoki, Kagura and Shinpachi is iconic. Thank you Sorachi for making this masterpiece.
For anyone wanting to check this anime out, I w…

At first, I came to Gintama for the comedy, but I stayed because of Gintoki.
Gintoki is the kind of character who hides his pain behind a smile. He acts lazy, jokes around, and makes everyone laugh, but underneath all of that is someone who has been through a lot and still chooses to keep moving forward.
And the comedy? Absolutely peak. The timing, randomness, character interactions, and absurd situations are on another level. There were so many moments where I genuinely couldn't stop laughing.
But the script is on a completely different level. The way Gintama can spend an entire episode being completely ridiculous and then suddenly turn that same cast into characters you genuinely care about is insane. The jokes aren't just there for comedy—the characters, their relationships, and all…

The High's are high but the Low's are really low too. That inconsistency is annoying. I really like the comedy. The toilet paper and barbershop episodes were absolute comedy gold. I laughed my ass off hard. The other unserious comedy themed arcs and episodes are all fun to watch as well.
The problem is definitely the unneeded and forced seriousness. I don't want to fucking listen to every character yap about their childish philosophies about goodness and friendship. The shounen cliches are definitely too much to handle sometimes. Every time someone tries to talk about anything serious after a fight or something I roll my eyes back. The monologues are too long and boring. I don't want to listen to it. The fights aren't that great and most of the times there is stupid logic, fake deaths, st…

The start of an absolute gargantuan anime and my top favourite anime - this season was absolutely fantastic and I loved the layout of the show - the min 5-6 episode arcs is such a great way to do this - they way this anime can effortlessly switch from comedy arcs to serious is genuine talent - one moment it can make you laugh ur lungs out and the next it will make you cry your heart out - I absolutely adore gintoki kagura and shinpachi and the 3 goofs just goofing around having fun and saving edo is enough for this anime to be special - the voice acting is truly splendid and because of it all of the jokes and comedy lands extremely hard

This is the LONGEST anime I have ever completed and while technically “season 1” is only 2/3 of the show, I would say it’s fair to finally write a review. Gintama at its best is a masterclass of the genre. It blends shonen and comedy seamlessly. HOWEVER at its worst it is simply unfunny toilet humor. It can be widely unfunny at times, as well as outdated. That being said, it has such a wide cast of characters that are so strong it is hard to get bored. When Gintama decides to finally get “serious” it does it well. Some of the shonen arcs are worth the watch themselves. (Yoshiwara in flames arc perhapssss???)
I usually always skip openings but never for this show! (OP 7 is my favorite)
You grow to love all the characters on screen. It’s such a wide and diverse cast of characters that you…

Back when I first started this I quickly grew bored with the episodic nature of the show, aside from it rarely being funny at the start, so I ended up dropping it in no time, around episode 19. A couple of months later, at the start of the year, for some reason (probably guilt for dropping it) I decided to read some reviews of the later seasons. Seeing again how adored this series was, I decided to pick it up again, without dropping it this time. And I'm glad I did.
If had free time, I would watch it. Even though some episodes or arcs were not interesting at all, or there were huge stretches of episodes which really missed the humour, it never stopped me coming back. Everything was amazing, from the characters, to the comedy, to the emotions, there's nothing else quite like it.
Gintama…

One of the rare comedy anime that truly made me laugh.
When I think of Gintama, the first thing that comes to mind is how unexpected this work was for me. I watched it many years ago, at a time when my repertoire was much more limited (basically more traditional shounen anime), and suddenly I encountered something completely out of the ordinary. It was, without exaggeration, the first Japanese comedy that really worked for me.
And the most curious thing is that Gintama doesn't try to be "accessible" at the beginning. The story is complete chaos: samurai in an era dominated by aliens, extremely eccentric characters, episodes that seem to make no sense at all… but that's where the difference lies. If you accept this madness and get into the game of the work, everything starts to fit togeth…

Take it from me.
As of today (december 14, 2025), i've watched Gintama 29 times. And the best time was ever always the next.
I've stumbled upon the show due to a reccomendation from my then younger brother, who saw cool swordfights and said that would be for me. When watching it, all i met was some over the top comedy, with an absurd amount of raunchy jokes and references to both other shounen anime and events from japanese culture. I didn't understand at first. But i decided to keep trying it.
As the show picks up, you'll find yourself in a rollercoaster of emotions, you'll cheer, you'll laugh, you'll cry your guts out. How it's possible to cry your guts out on the same show that 5 minutes before was making vomit jokes? Gintama does that for ya.
The show also abuses physical comedy a…

Gintama is the Japanese equivalent of Family Guy, a disgustingly long-running cartoon show held together with eighth-grade dick and fart jokes, paper-thin reference humor, contrived slapstick and people making loud, horrible noises, with the very occasional glimmer of something kind of resembling good content if you squint.
The show stars Gintoki "We Have Kenshin Himura at Home" Sakata, a manic underemployed diabetic who stops mugging for the camera long enough to do all the cool fight scenes everyone remembers and not a second longer. Joining him is Kagura, whose humor can best be described as "what if girl... but she beat people up?" and Shinpachi, who's humor can best be described as "what if we had somebody who just explained the joke at the top of his lungs, every time we told one?"…

No matter how many times I rewatch it, it’s never boring. It makes you laugh, cry, then laugh again with tears in your eyes from crying just now. You know it’s good when even the straight character is crazy compared to other anime’s crazy characters.
It’s one of those anime where if you haven’t watched it you don’t get why so many people like it so much, but after watching it it’s like that gif of Danny DeVito saying “I get it now.”
One of the best thing about Gintama is you think you know what’s gonna happen and something completely unexpected happens. And it’s not in a bad way either.

It's been years since I made a review and it's my favorite anime of all time, GINTAMA. I effing love GINTAMA, I grow up with this sh*t.
The one thing I really respected about GINTAMA especially while it was coming out is that it started off obviously as an episodic comedy series where like each episode would have it's own self-contained story, but then a couple of volumes in they introduced an actual story element that was incredibly serious that actually explored each of the characters backstories and relationships because there's a sh*tload of character in the show, but sometimes you read a story and it just makes sense that these characters know each other or have this relationship and it doesn't seem like someone else purposefully written it to make sense.
It's written in a way that…

Excellent, sublime, wonderful, for me, Gintama is a masterpiece without any doubt.
I've been trying to write a review for months, and I still don't feel satisfied with this one because I feel like words aren't enough to describe how much I love Gintama and how much it has given to me.
It has masterfully developed characters, many of which are female and many are secondary.
The female characters are excellent; they have their own individuality and don’t depend on a man.
You will love every secondary characters too and in some cases you will even cry.
Forget the usual main character who wants to fight and become strong at all costs; here we have Gintoki, an unconventional protagonist who breaks the mold, a man who has lost everything and suffered, devoid of any purpose and limited himself…

Gintama is a rare gem that effortlessly blends absurd comedy with gut-wrenching drama, creating an experience that’s both hilarious and heart-breaking. The show starts lighthearted, with its witty humor and quirky characters, but as it progresses, it takes you on an emotional rollercoaster you never saw coming.
What hits hardest is its ability to make you care deeply for characters who have nothing but their flaws and past scars. When the story shifts into darker territory, you realize just how much these moments mean — the weight of every loss feels real, and the silences between jokes are full of unspoken pain.
By the end, you can't help but feel a mixture of love and sorrow for this series. It’s a show that will make you laugh until your stomach hurts, and then break your heart, leavi…

Gintama is the anime that every person should at least commit a couple of episodes to. It's a blend of many genres, including comedy, action, and satire. If you like Gintama, it will be in your top 5 anime of all time, however, it is not for everybody. It's the kind of show that rewards you the longer you watch, and it can be difficult to get into it until you watch around 20 episodes.
Gintama has one of the most vibrant character rosters of all time, in my opinion. Every character is well written and intricately created. The jokes are legitimately funny, which is important for the main appeal of the show. This also emphasizes the serious beats of the occasional story-driven arcs, which are well told and perfectly fit in amongst the beautiful chaos of this show.
Overall, Gintama is at l…

This has to be the most complicated “recommended” review I could write, especially for a show I am rating 6/10. Is the show good? Kind of.
Gintama is first and foremost a product of its time. We don’t really have 200+ episode series anymore, and we certainly don’t see comedies that typically present episodic plots last as long as the original Gintama series has.
This series relies on paradox of anime and manga series that were either popular at the same time Gintama aired. It also references popular actors, musicians, and even news anchors that I wouldn’t expect anyone outside of Japan to know. It also has a ton of references to Dragon Quest. If you didn’t watch much anime that aired before the 2000s, you won’t really get a lot of references that are thrown out there. However, the show p…

I spent most of my life watching Naruto, DB, Once piece and other famous shonen anime. I also watched all kind of comedy and romance anime. I am obsessed with so many characters that I can not stop thinking about how their story would be if things happenned differently. And somehow after watching Gintama fell uncomfortable putting any of the other show in my top 100. All I want and need in my top 100 is Gintama and Gintama alone.
The comedy is just 100/100. The word plays may seem too much but each rewatch of the show, interview of the anime, discussion with other fan you start to find something new to laugh at every single time you watch it. IT took me 5-6 years just to get the Mantama joke out of nowhere while watching a random Gintama interview that was not even related to the episole…

This is the best anime for the comedy genre, maybe even the best of all anime, I'm serious about it
from the beginning to the end (finished) in which season I forgot because there are so many episodes, I never get tired of watching it. a very extraordinary comedy in my opinion, adult comedy, classic comedy, parody, politics, and so on. even the story can enter our dimension. my favorite characters are of course the MC, Gintama and also Hijikata and also Zura, all three are clowns in their respective groups haha. I even really hope that a new series of this best anime will be made again. the voice actor from Gintama (Tomokazu Sugita) is the best in my opinion, with his distinctive style that is very suitable for playing the stupid character haha.
I give 100 out of 10 for this extraordinary…

Gintama is the capstone of a generation of manga. The requirements to enjoy it are simple: Do you like gag and toilet humor? Are you familiar with the more popular manga and anime from the golden era up until the mid-2010s? If so, you'll most likely love this perfect blend of action, humor, and drama.
With that said, let’s dive into Gintama—its themes, structure, and how it compares to other works. We’ll also look at whether its beginning is misleading and how leverages the medium to deliver its themes.
So, what is this show about?
This show is set in Edo, the land of the samurai—a clear metaphor for Japan. The central thesis is that while the Amanto (foreigners, aliens) arrive and transform it into something entirely new, the core of what it means to be a samurai endures.
Gintama reim…

Gintama is one of the best shows I've ever watched, but it's not for everyone. I've tried recommending it to a couple of my friends, but I feel like they won't enjoy it as much as I did. The closest show I can think of that sort of resembles the same feeling is Saiki Kusuo: stupid, hilarious humor and a deep understanding of human nature.
Gintoki is one of the best main characters that I have encountered. Despite everything, he had to live. And as hollow as he appears, he is not. Because Gintama shows you that it's the people that surround you, that make up what you are. Caring for others is in return caring for yourself. And as long as you care, you will never be alone.
Anyway, I can't believe that a show that recurrently makes poop and fart jokes (which I usually hate) made me laugh so…
