Great Teacher Onizuka

Great Teacher Onizuka

Introduction

Twenty-two-year-old Eikichi Onizuka—ex-biker gang leader, conqueror of Shonan, and virgin—has a dream: to become the greatest high school teacher in all of Japan. This isn't because of a passion for teaching, but because he wants a loving teenage wife when he's old and gray. Still, for a perverted, greedy, and lazy delinquent, there is more to Onizuka than meets the eye. So when he lands a job as the homeroom teacher of the Class 3-4 at the prestigious Holy Forest Academy—despite suplexing the Vice Principal—all of his talents are put to the test, as this class is particularly infamous. Due to their utter contempt for all teachers, the class' students use psychological warfare to mentally break any new homeroom teacher they get, forcing them to quit and leave school. However, Onizuka isn't your average teacher, and he's ready for any challenge in his way. Bullying, suicide, and sexual harassment are just a few of the issues his students face daily. By tackling the roots of their problems, Onizuka supports them with his unpredictable and unconventional methods—even if it means jumping off a building to save a suicidal child. Thanks to his eccentric charm and fun-loving nature, Class 3-4 slowly learns just how enjoyable school can be when you're the pupils of the Great Teacher Onizuka. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I wrote mixed feelings, but I think if you're a big anime fan - a true otaku - then GTO is one of those classic (now considered "retro") titles that you can't miss. The mixed feelings really comes from two crucial parts to this series: the outdated, sexist, creepy humor that is repeatedly shown...and the lackluster animation/art style. However, the main premise of Great Teacher Onizuka - an ex-gangster-turned-teacher tryna reform a class of delinquents - is the biggest appeal and most successful aspect of this show. This 43-episode long anime is extremely episodic which then turns into 3-4 episode arcs by the end, thus making it very easy to sit back and watch. There's not much of a plot, though every now and then things will occur which will play into later eps. I switched between the E…

I enjoyed the overall premise of Onizuka going above and beyond for these kids that the other adults have given up on. Sometimes using some extremely unorthodox methods. This anime has a great balance of slapstick comedy and heartfelt drama. This series has strong themes of redemption, helping troubled kids and some genuine life lessons but those moments were sometimes undercut by the pervy gags and tropes of old anime. It makes the humor feel dated and it could be off putting for some. If you can get past certain aspects of the humor it can be an enjoyable watch. It’s still a standout school series about flawed people helping each other grow.

DO NOT WATCH! Disgusting sexualization of teenage girls, main character is a pdf file, the creators and everyone who loves this show should be investigated... The story isn't unique, but it has potential. Unfortunately, it's ruined by the pdf file jokes and overall disgusting attitude toward the female characters. The best part of the whole thing is the art style. It's cute and old-timey. The facial expressions are so ugly sometimes that it's funny. The characters are over the top caricatures which isn't necessarily bad but the comedy isn't landing in this one. I'm pretty sure if you're a decent human being you cannot enjoy this garbage.

Hello, hi, and howdy. :) Great Teacher Onizuka was another one of those classic anime that I had put off on watching for a long period of time. If you've read my Fruits Basket review, I mentioned that I had a list of "last protocol" anime. A somewhat lengthy list of anime that are highly respected by annoying otakus who just can't seem to let things go, well-regarded by all, and have stood the test of time; reigniting my love for the medium of anime. Ghost in the Shell, Baccano, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, any Satoshi Kon film, and so on. Those anime may seem arbitrary, but I was literally just reading off my list as I was writing this part down. I'm sure you can guess that Great Teacher Onizuka was also on that list. It was an anime I heard nothing but immens…

GTO is one of those rare anime that manages to perfectly balance comedy, drama, and heartfelt moments. Eikichi Onizuka is an unforgettable protagonist—part goofball, part rogue, but completely dedicated to helping his students in unconventional ways. What starts as a seemingly over-the-top comedy quickly evolves into a story with real emotional weight, exploring themes like bullying, self-esteem, and the struggles of adolescence. The humor is outrageous and often absurd, but it never feels forced; it actually reinforces the charm and unpredictability of Onizuka’s character. delivering genuinely touching moments that make you reflect on life, friendship, and the impact a teacher can have. The supporting cast is memorable, and each student has their own quirks and growth arcs that feel s…

Let's get this out of the way: Great Teacher Onizuka is a stone-cold classic, and it absolutely earns that title. But when you sit down to watch it today, the experience is a bit like finding a beloved, slightly scuffed-up mixtape from the late 90s. The energy is infectious, the heart is absolutely in the right place, and it has moments of pure genius, but you also can't ignore the occasional hiss of a worn-out tape or a track that cuts off a little too soon. That's why, for all its legendary status, I'd firmly place it at an 8/10—brilliant, but with a few undeniable scratches on the surface. The undeniable, roaring engine of this entire show is Eikichi Onizuka himself. To call him a "breath of fresh air" is an understatement; he's more like a tornado that smells of cheap cigarettes and d…

I preface that this is an older anime, coming out from 1999 to 2000, and with it comes certain problematic subjects and themes that are either not explored as often, or not as cavalier, and the perversion is more freeing compared to more current titles. If you are someone who is unable to separate that it is an older work where such things were accepted and be able to view past that, then this show isn't for you. However, if you can go in with that open mind then I do recommend this series, especially in a world that looking at almost 25 years ago, hasn't changed much. GTO is a modern anime classic with a focus of a wild teacher who walks to the beat of his own drum, and by that I mean there is no way any school would ever hire such a man despite his approach and feelings on teaching and…

you should totally watch it, this anime is sick, i was skipping it for like half a year but damn its even better than grand blue, makes you laugh like hell, and each episode has its own lesson, this anime is 10/10 but its manga is 11/10 one of the best old school anime. nothing in this show was predictable, like whatever you would think could happen there wont be happening, the art style was just like early 90s to late 90s anime which suits it the best. also if anyone wants to watch an anime of onizuka's past when he was in high school and leader of biker gang watch- shonan junai gumi it aired in 1994 i guess.

GTO unbiasedly acknowledges the hardships of every walk of life and refrains from blatantly ostracizing any group without proper inspection. It promotes living carefree as the principal philosophy of life, but not at the cost of morality and personal growth. And while it is primarily a critique of the education system, it doesn’t specifically target educators as the wrongdoers in every situation, holding students accountable where necessary, thereby suggesting the need for cumulative effort for any kind of correction. Onizuka functions as a brilliant bridge between the two, as he’s incredibly flawed as a person, yet the only one who appropriately understands both sides for their flaws, being a teacher and a young adult. He teaches practically in the form of examples and experience, throwin…

It's just what it says on the tin: great. I watched this show a short time after watching Golden Boy. I'm not going to be comparing to that show, but it had a similar vibe to it, and I think in many ways this is a broader realization of the ideas of Golden Boy. In many ways, this show probably shouldn't work. When your premise is that Onizuka is becoming a teacher to perv on high school girls... yeah, it's not the best, especially since he doesn't really drop that throughout the story. Hell, a substantial arc in this story involves Onizuka getting one of his students work as a model using some very revealing outfits to display her ample... assets. But that's also kind of the point. Onizuka is a good person at heart, even if it's hard to see at times (like, a lot of times), but he also d…

An unique, silly, thrilling, yet thoughtful story. Great Teacher Onizuka probably isn't your best anime and to be honest the animation already felt outdated by today's standard, but what a journey with ups and downs especially how the progress of relationship between Eikichi Onizuka and people around him. It's not just about how teacher and student should act together but how true friendship being built with trust even when others think it's impossible. Even if the storyline somehow kind of different from the original manga, it has its own charms and prove to be still watch-worthy. Also take a note that the anime can be serve as a different version of the story which for some might enjoyable due to alternative. SOLID 9/10

GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka is a classic, must-watch anime. Story/Pacing - I've enjoyed watching Onizuka's students go from hating him to loving him. The story can be very inconsistent at times. Animation (7/10) - At first, I was not too fond of the animation. But as you gradually get used to it, you become a fan of it. Characters (9/10) - Eikichi Onizuka: Eikichi might just be one of my favorite characters of all time! A GREAT character. You can insert him into any story, or situation, and it'll automatically be more fun. Onizuka doesn't teach school lessons. He teaches life lessons; ones that will personally stick with you. I would love to be friends with Onizuka, he's full of good quotes, jokes, and will be always there for you, and will take the blame even if it means sacrifici…

The subject of the story, Onizuka, is a former leader of a biker gang with an aspiration to become a teacher. He is not a conventional hero but his character transformation throughout the series is fascinating. His past reveals the transformation from the “bad boy” to a good man. The vagaries of the show leaves you craving for more to come. The style in which the writer writes makes it easier for viewers to guess. The animation is not the selling point of this anime. It depicts a traditional hand-drawn animation style similar to anime classics such as Trigun, Ruroni Kenshin, or the early Dragonball Z, so it is not outstanding yet has its retro feel that makes it different and unique from current anime. The sound quality is simple and reflective of the series’ down-to-earth attitude. The…

There is no piece of media that is equal parts heartwarming, badass, goofy, and sad as GTO. I picked up this series on the account that I thought Onizuka looked cool on the cover. I’m easily sold when it comes to anime and manga that deal with delinquents who have bleached hair. I had no idea that after I’d finished my watching experience, that I’d change my life for the better. For an anime to send the viewers on their way with something they might carry with them for the rest of their lives is quite the impact to leave. And I’m proud to admit that Onizuka had left that impact on me. What was it about this show that makes it so profound? To get to the bottom of that, I’ll have to tell you what it’s about. Onizuka is a former highschool delinquent and mobster who decides that he will beco…

Great Teacher Onizuka, or GTO, is a comedic gem in the world of anime that commands a solid 9/10 rating for its unique and irreverent take on the teaching profession. The series follows Eikichi Onizuka, a former gang member turned unorthodox teacher, on his mission to inspire and connect with his students in ways that defy conventional norms. Onizuka's outlandish behavior and hilarious antics provide a refreshing twist on the typical high school setting, ensuring non-stop laughter and entertainment. The character of Onizuka is larger than life, and his unconventional teaching methods challenge both his students and viewers to think outside the box, making this anime an enduring classic. What sets GTO apart is its ability to balance uproarious humor with poignant life lessons. While the se…

A great anime although it was slimmed down extremely from the manga. I saw snippets of GTO from youtube and the comedy was great from what I saw so I thought I'd give it a binge and oh boy was it worth it. Even for an anime which came out pre 2000 while it didn't have any fancy and smooth looking art style like what we have today and disclaimer, I don't believe you need it to be UFO table level art style to be good, especially when the setting is school and comedy. All you need is a good plot, characters with enough depth and alot of funny drawn faces for it to be at the level it needs to be. The plot itself for the anime was about a delinquent man Onizuka who wanted to become the best teacher in all of Japan and his job is to win over the students who from their past experiences hate te…

At some point in my life, I wanted to be a teacher, but that dream never really materialized. Nevertheless, I can confidently say I got to be one through Onizuka after watching GTO. Despite me never becoming a teacher He mirrored my interactions with kids when I worked as a camp counselor during high school. Looking back, I realize I was simply being myself, and the children seemed to appreciate that. Each morning, I brought cards and snacks, would be over-competitive in sports and activities, gave every kid in my group a nickname, and drew both positive and negative feedback from fellow counselors, especially my manager. One day an incident occurred that got me in big trouble, but after the child's apology and confession, I avoided being fired. To emphasize my point, Onizuka is a lot of t…
