Introduction

After the noble Kappa Kingdom falls to the Otter Empire, the Kappa prince Keppi loses much of his power and becomes helpless against the unseen Kapa-zombies. These zombies plague the world, and are the creations of the Otters and manifestations of people's deepest desires. With no other choice, Keppi must rely on three young boys: Kazuki Yasaka, who must carry a box with him wherever he goes; Enta Jinnai, Kazuki's childhood friend; and Tooi Kuji, a delinquent and a school truant. By having the mythical organ called a shirikodama removed from them, the boys are able to become Kappa themselves and fight the Kapa-zombies. However, to defeat them, the boys must connect with each other via their minds, bodies, and—most importantly—secrets. As the Kappa Kingdom relies on these boys, they must reveal themselves as they have never done before, all the while learning that connections are fragile and truly precious things. Sarazanmai it's a unrecognized masterpiece. I accidentally watched this with my father by doing a roulette, and we started watching with low expectations. We laughed so much at the first episode, so we decided to go on. This is with no doubt my favorite anime ever. It looks weird at first, but after watching it, you will get the feeling of crying. I find it surreal how underrated this is. And everything about this anime is perfect, from start to end. It has the trick of making the viewer question everything that is happening, in a funny and weird way, which makes this even more enjoyable. In each episode, you form a new thought, and newer questions, which in the end are answered in a beautiful story of friendship and connections. I have learned from this anime the importance of connect…

This anime walked so that JJK could run. Best episode by far is episode 5 or 6. Best quote by far. "Your mother....was a whore!" *dies Did this anime teach me to cherish my connections. Yes 100%. 1000% even. Is this a great anime to watch with friends. Yes, 1000% Sara slayed so hard she cuntified the land. Watching this is dub is hilarious and Alejandro Saab and the rest of the cast did an outstanding work! They slayed so hard they also cuntified the land. Does this anime contain doomed yaoi? For sure, but with a good ending. :) For real for real I 100% recommend this as a great watch for non-bl lovers and lovers of bl.

Sarazanmai is a very interesting and enjoyable show that I was actually taken aback by initially. the clashing vibes of the stylishness (animation, character design, fashion) with the awkwardness & emotional vulnerability made for a pretty unique and fascinating experience. the magical realism aspects of the show were some of my favorites, and reminded me vaguely of Murakami works like certain parts of Kafka on the Shore. and those transformation scenes were classic as expected from a living legend. the only thing that took some getting used to was the shirikodama removal method. i won’t spoil this bizarre and hilarious part of the show for you, just check it out and see what I mean for yourself. from what i’ve seen so far, Ikuhara don’t miss! For fans of: Revolutionary Girl Utena, Pengu…

First and foremost, if you're deciding to pick this up, I suggest going in completely blind and with an open mind. Definitely makes it more hilarious. If you're a rebel, read on. Ok so i absolutely love the message, but the irony is that I am not able to fully connect with this anime. I thought it was a well done and bizarre take on the idea that people are social creatures who seek out connections, despite the inherently difficult nature of creating attachments. Usually we're so guarded with our secrets, and we believe that hiding those secrets will help connections, but it's really the opposite. Also, I enjoyed how selfish desires can turn toxic and be manipulated to destroy connections as well. I wasn't expecting such a silly show about buttholes and kappa's to make me think and truly…

Gay frog anime made me confused, get way too invested in butthole frogs, then cry, then pray that the gay frog bitches get to be happy Story: 8 I still don't know what happened but it made me sad Art: 8 Pretty color pretty animation Weird butthole scenes but they were pretty at least Frog Sound: 9 Still listen to the soundtracks and they're all bangers Character: 7 Kind of bland but still good. Kappa. Soccer. Boxes. Butts? Normally unrelated, but important within the context of this bizarre show. It's flat out nonsensical. On the surface, this anime is unlike anything I've seen before, or likely will see ever again. But at its core, it is trying to be a melodramatic shounen ai with novel plot points. You'll repeatedly ask what the hell this is and why you're watching, but are also strangely unable to stop. I do respect the fact that the director was fully committed to the weirdness here though. All three of the leads are butthurt for one reason or another. Some for serious reasons like guilt or abandonment issues, others for unrequited love. The inclusion of some other characters seem unnecessary, though that's par for the course here. None of them are particularly deep, but a…

Soiya Soiya Soiya I never intended to watch this anime but because of the anime-watching challenge, I did. And guess what I totally enjoyed it. Sarazanmai depicts the two sides of our personality. First, our selfish desires where we keep everything hidden. It's shameful and sometimes disgusting that's why we keep it a secret. The second side is love where we can sacrifice anything and transcends all of our desire. The story and narration of the anime are so confusing at first. It will weird you out but you'll feel a bit of curiosity as to what this anime is all about. There is also a lot of symbolism used here. As the anime progress, it will make sense in the end. I love the art used in this anime. It really complements the story. I also enjoy the ost and songs used. Overall, I really e…

At first, I thought it was some anime about Cops, from what'd I had seen on social media, but, despite my predictions, it was more than that, yes it was weird, yes it felt confusing but peeling back the layers of butt orbs and kappa, there truly was a beautiful story of the connections you share with those you love and letting go of things you love or lies you kept, even if it hurts, even if it means destroying the world you've created for yourself. Adding on the fact the casual queer representation was so masterfully done, it really perfectly rounds off the show's themes. Enta is allowed to talk about his love for Kazuki and he is allowed to want to have him for himself, he's allowed to be jealous, and it's seen as rather usual like it's just a normal part of being an emotional, stupid ki…

“I want to connect, so Sarazanmai.” As soon as I got to know that Kunihiko Ikuhara is going to direct this, I got excited for it. Kunihiko Ikuhara is a person who made his name in the industry for his uniqueness in series composition and storytelling which can be seen in his previous works such as Mawaru Penguindrum and Yuri Kuma Arashi. Sarazanmai is also one of his bizarre works and it has one of those Japanese folklore creatures called "Kappa", an youkai (妖怪). The first kappa introduced in the series is a Kappa prince named "Keppi" whose noble Kappa Kingdom fell to the Otter Empire and now the Kappa prince Keppi has lost much of his power and became helpless against the"Kapa-zombies" whom are invisible to humans, these zombies plague the world, and are the creations of the Otters and…

Sarazanmai Review Story (6/10) Fine The story to Sarazanmai is a fine one and in a nutshell a giant undertone of accepting your inner desires and love, knowing the difference between them and how to cop with them. If you are a fan of stories like the video game Persona (Particularly Persona 4 and 5) the way they cop with their inner desires is very reminiscent to those games as the main characters have to extract the desires and expose their victims which very similar in fashion to making a person in P4 accept their inner shadow's negative personality trait or taking the heart of someone in P5. The story for the middle portion gets a tad episodic type of villian of the week so if you aren't a fan of that little repetition then you should take that into consideration as well. Art and…

I decided to watch Sarazanmai because i saw a GIF of the transformation scene. I thought it would a fun, goofy anime, but there's so much more to it than the surface-level weirdness. I just finished watching it and I'm in shock, I had no idea that I would love it as much as I did. I cant stop obsessing over it, especially the soundtrack. The characters are so beautifully vulnerable, with incredible depth. My only problem with this show is that there aren't enough episodes. It felt a bit rushed at certain places, nonetheless i still give this a 10/10!!

This was my first encounter with Kunihiko Ikuhara and I really didn’t know what I was getting into. I was expecting a cute little fantasy adventure with the importance of friendship being the central theme, so I was surprised to see this was a visually astonishing and emotionally affective portrayal of queer longing, self-sacrifice, the destructive power of capitalism, and friendship. The main characters of Sarazanmai, Enta, Toi, Kazuki, and even Reo, all devote themselves to a certain "connection" with someone in their lives; a sibling, an unrequited crush, a lover, etc. However, this devotion to their "connection" becomes the source of conflict for these characters as it often leads them to make sacrifices that hurt themselves/others and other regrettable decisions. Simultaneously, Ikuha…

So when I started this anime I was like...this is weird. And honestly? That opinion did not change, BUT Sarazanmai is not JUST weird its funny, optimistic, and cute. I liked the main arch of the story with the kappa and otters that kept me entertained and the three boys and their desires. I also liked that the anime had LGBTQ+ characters and storylines that felt real and not just tossed in like many others. The story is crazy, fun, and interesting. Like there is so much hilarious about this anime. Like BUTTS??? Yes, I said it BUTTS! Overall, I was entertained and found myself smiling along and crying along with the characters. The art was amazing and I liked the songs in the anime. Also those cops??? <3 Watch this anime if you're looking for something NEW and interesting. Sarazanmai w…

“We live in an age where, with our smartphones and social media, connecting with people is a daily activity— so I wanted to ask, what does that all mean ? What do we want to do with those connections ?” - Ikuhara Kunihiko Disclaimer: This is more so an analysis with aspects of evaluation... I won't be discussing the OST or art or other qualities you'd usually see in a review. Sarazanmai is Ikuhara Kunihiko’s most recent work and a fable on how we cannot bond through means outside of the social media sphere— we are desensitized and disconnected to those around us and connect with others through our persona and not our personality. It’s a take on our advanced technology and how it is not evil, but regularly misused and abused. It espouses the concept of true connectivity first adopted by…

It was a slow burn for me. You have to get into it and it takes a while to adjust to the weirdness. That said, this anime had a profound impact on me and left me feeling excited and motivated. My score of 10/10 does not mean the anime is perfect. But, at the end of the series, I felt 10/10 for having watched it. The catharsis more than made up for my initial discomfort. I shall be carrying some lessons learnt from this anime through the rest of my life. Story: It starts out slow, confusing and off-putting. In fact, so much so that it can't have been done so unintentionally. It almost seems as though it is trying to chase away unwanted viewers at the start. It requires you to engage with it, so it is not for superficial watching. Art: The production standards of Sarazanmai were excell…

People reviewing this clearly haven't seen the whole show so I'm going to do it a bit of justice and say it is totally worth watching. My rating of 9 is mainly out of my sheer enjoyment of the show as I think analytically I could nitpick but I won't because all of that is overshadowed by how fun but profound this is. The first few episodes are confusing and repetitive because it starts out as a 'monster of the week' kind of thing and only gives you bits and pieces to go on. I only really kept watching because I was enjoying the weirdness. But once you see it through to the end, everything connects up and make sense. It is definitely a bit of a think-piece and pretty cheesy but actually has a lot to say. If you like those friendshippy kind of anime that examine the importance of friends in…

When I say that Sarazanmai is Kunihiko Ikuhara’s most accessible anime, I don’t mean to imply that it lacks the uniqueness of his other work, far from it. What I do mean is that, while it may lack depth in comparison to shows like Mawaru Penguindrum and Revolutionary Girl Utena, it’s still very much an Ikuhara story, with all the visual flair that is to be expected of something under his directorial control. Surprisingly enough, the lack of depth is actually one of the reasons that I think makes Sarazanmai Ikuhara’s best work to date. When watching other Ikuhara shows, I’ve found that at times, Ikuhara’s tendency to overindulge in his visual style can actually detract from the story and characters, yet he seems to do this constantly. I don’t like using the word pretentious, but that’s ho…

I MUST SAY I'M IN LOVE WITH THIS ANIME FROM ALL THE ASPECTS! IT CHANGED MY LIFE STYLE! At the time when I first saw the first trailer of this anime back in November 2018, I was immediately engaged by the stunning real-life visuals combined with the anime art, which made me wonder if the whole show is going to look like that. It looked so unique from that point of view but at the same time made me a bit sceptical about it, not gonna lie (even tho I wished to be like that for some reason). I gladly said ''Ooh so this is a 'MUST WATCH' hmm'', not expecting anything from it whatsoever. I didn't even know what kappa means, which is another reason what made me appreciate this show even more. This show not only teaches us how to connect with people and how we should take responsabilities towards…

(pt/eng) ENG: "I want to connect, but I want to cheat" Sarazanmai is legitimately about connections, about connecting with people, how these relationships are formed, how they are facilitated or hindered, talks about our desires, and how selfishly we ignore the feelings and reciprocity. others, to have a connection founded on love, if not, is only desire and selfishness. It is about feelings, love, desire, friendship and despair. Sarazanmai is a work full of symbolism, with great characters and subjectivity, I suggest you watch and understand all the madness I'm talking about, a work that is full of good direction and production, making you connected and immersed all the time, with what you see on the screen. PT: "Eu quero me conectar, mas eu quero trair" Sarazanmai é legitimamente so…
