The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Introduction

If a survey were conducted to see if people believed in aliens, time travelers, or maybe espers, most would say they do not; average high school student Kyon considers himself among the non-believers. However, on his first day of school, he meets a girl who soon turns his world upside down. During class introductions, the beautiful Haruhi Suzumiya boldly announces her boredom with "normal" people and her intention of meeting supernatural beings. Dumbfounded, Kyon learns of her frustration with the lack of paranormal-focused clubs at their school and unwittingly inspires her to start her own club. She creates the Spreading Fun all Over the World with Haruhi Suzumiya Brigade, otherwise known as the SOS Brigade. Following the SOS Brigade's founding, Haruhi manages to recruit Kyon and three other members: quiet bookworm Yuki Nagato, shy upperclassman Mikuru Asahina, and perpetually positive Itsuki Koizumi. Despite their normal appearance, the new members of the SOS Brigade each carry their own secrets related to Haruhi. Caught up in the mystery surrounding the eccentric club leader, Kyon is whisked away on a series of misadventures by Haruhi and the SOS Brigade, each one bringing him closer to the truth about who and what she is. PLEASE CONSIDER WATCHING RELEASE ORDER, NOT CHRONOLOGICAL I have never written a review for any anime, but finishing this anime left me feeling so conflicted that I had to express my thoughts. I believe that the way I watched the show and my high expectations really set the anime back, which ultimately led me to score it a 6.5. It was recommended to watch this in chronological order, and I personally believe that was not the right decision because it removes the mystery and climactic feeling of certain events. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part Six, the 6th episode in chronological order, makes sense, but I wish I had watched it in release order because it would have been a great finale for season 1. I also had high expectations because of the praise this anime received. After watchin…

[CONTAINS SLIGHT SPOLIERS] Haruhi Suzumiya. It's a show that you'll dive into expecting a cute, moe slice-of-life and maaaybee slight romance if you've only looked at the cover and not the synopsis. Whether I was the only one who thought that or you're thinking it now, it's best to drop it. "What the hell is happening?"—this line will repeat in your mind as you watch the first 3 episodes. However, you will get used to it, positively or negatively. Randomness and its amusing absurdity is what builds this show—if that's what you're into, then you're in for a ride. Story [7/10] The story was interesting; it gets you hooked early on in the story, showing various strange incidents that will be dealt with by the characters. It starts with a comedic monologue by the main character and then…

While I greatly prefer the Haruhi film, the series is not altogether bad. Certain episodes are decent, but once most of the supernatural and sci-fi gimmicks have been revealed, the series relaxes into moeblob slime of life, filled with cliche anime high schoolers, with the addition of a sarcastic main who monologues in his head while being girlbossed. Each one of his sassy lines kind of lose their impact when you realize every veiled objection he has translates to "Yes, mommy, please step on me, mommy. May I have another, mommy?" I feel like Kyoani has used this kind of aloof "I don't wanna (but secretly I do), yet I will do anything you tell me" passive MC over and over--oh, wait, that's just how it is in anime, only it's more extreme here because Haruhi is one aggressive ball-busting tsu…

I'm giving this an 8 just because I really liked the movie and OST. It's also ironic I gave it an 8 considering that number is the main drawback of this series. The Melancholy of Harui Suzumiya is a high-school anime sprinkled with a bit of fantasy, mystery, and fan-service. Think 'Hyouka' but without the Detective-mystery stuff. In fact, this show is more upbeat than Hyouka to be considered SoL. It also incorporates a lot of fantasy and sci-fi elements. The premise is similar to Hyouka in a sense that Kyon (just like Hotarou) unknowingly finds himself doing verious activities at school (against his will). Harui and Chitanda also share similar traits, except Harui is more aggressive, self-centered, and highly energetic. And Kyon acts as the guardrail that prevents her from going too far. T…

This series annoyed me SO much. It starts off acting like it's gonna be some cool thing with lots of details and with the multiple watch orders. It doesn't matter. It truly feels like the writers had ambitious ideas that they didn't commit to. For example, in episode one Haruhi changes her hairstyle each day, there's a long scene about it. And then that's it. She has the same hairstyle the rest of the show. What was even the point. And this is a RECURRING THEME. So much "what was the point" throughout the whole show. We hardly even get to see any of the cool sci-fi stuff. There are probably like 5 things throughout the show that you need to remember, and half of those you don't REALLY need to remember. Also, the way Haruhi treats Mikuhara is just SOOO gross. It genuinely bothered me so mu…

You know, I always envisioned God as a kooky Japanese high school girl delicately toeing the line between spontaneity and sociopathy. Jokes aside, as lighthearted and comedic as this series can be, it kind of turns existentialism and religion on their respective heads. What if God walked among us but didn't know they were God? What if it were someone you knew? What if you found out before they did? Haruhi and Kyon kind of represent the gap between optimistic escapism and cynical realism, or lingering childhood and sobering adulthood. Haruhi is obsessed with aliens, espers, generally paranormal or supernatural concepts, whereas Kyon's concerned with what's in front of him, only accepting what he knows to be real. The two end up sitting next to each other in class, and though they don't e…

Haruhi is both intensely charming, but equally intimidating and grating. Both the show (especially in season 2) and the character. The first season, which I watched in broadcast order, was one of the most unique and interesting shows I've ever watched, literally had me glued to the screen. Having to piece together and connect the first season was also really fun and was paced incredibly. Despite some episodes taking place after the finale, they still kept up Haruhi's emotional arc to where it needed to be in the finale so well that I really think that watching it in broadcast order for the first time is the way to go. When I first heard this show I thought it'd be one of those CGDCT animes about a repressed girl coming out of her shell and I'm glad it was so much more than that. The title…

This is a review of the first 14 episodes of “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” in chronological order (not airing). Haruhi Suzumiya is a show that I’ve existed on the fringes of ever since I started watching anime. I remember picking up the first 5-ish episodes (in airing order) on DVD from the library in the 2000s, but I never got much further than that until now. While I have yet to complete all 28 episodes in full (or watch it in the original airing order), there is something so uniquely special about Haruhi Suzumiya, and I think that is largely because of how weird it is. The entire team behind this show does a great job of making you feel unsettled as you watch it (from the unique angles of some of the shots to the overall music/sound design) in a way that more recent shows (i.e…

So, you heard The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is pretty damn good, but you're questioning whether the first two seasons are worth watching for the sake of the movie. Well, I'm here to answer, yeah, they are. Look, as my rating will suggest, I can't in good conscience say that The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is particularly good. The characters are cliche (to the point this is made fun of by the show itself, multiple times), no plot development matters (to the point where people will literally tell you the order in which you watch these episodes just does not matter), and hell, that's like 70% of the stuff that makes me watch anime! What this show does do pretty damn well is pure dumb fun, and ridiculously good set-up. Now, while the pay-off to that set-up rarely makes it worth it,…

[Outdated Review. I plan on making a more rational one eventually. Feel free to laugh until that happens] PLEASE READ THIS TO THE END!!! For starters, what the hell was this???? I mean, I know it's a parody show but... having tons of unjustified fan service, cringy OVERRATED internal MC dialogues, and the most boring and random cast you could ever think of... is absolute missed potential here ladies and gentlemen. But hold up! I said it has tons of crap but is still "missed potential"??? The hell am I talking about???? (Note : I will be talking about both seasons here and not just the first. I'll explain why at the end) Well, the thing is, this show starts as an actually geniune mystery/supernatural show. The first 6 episodes titled, you guessed it, "The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya", se…

Despite the rating I gave it, I don't necessarily think it was a bad "show" - it has an ok animation, and to me, it wasn't a torture to watch, like, for example, flcl was. But just like flcl, this show is just too pretentious for what it is. I get it, it's a "parody" - but having still shots that last a couple of minutes, barely understandable philosophical rants and other "quirks" is not required to make a good parody show. Because in the end, even if it's just a mask, it's one of a cheerful SoL comedy. Lucky star, in my opinion, is an example of a parody show done right - not being overly dramatic or philosophic yet steadily breaking the 4th wall with the viewer. Because of this show's specific, I don't think you'll be disappointed watching it, but I still can't give it more than 3/10 -…

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is an anime about an unaware reality warper named Haruhi Suzumiya getting into wacky hijinks with her friends because they have to make sure she doesn't get bored and tear the fabric of reality itself. No, that's not right. Let me try again The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is a 2006 anime adapted from a 2003 light novel series written by Nagaru Tanigawa. No, that's not it either. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is one of the most popular anime of all time and a sheer cultural sensation from the mid-to-late 2000s. No, no, no! The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is...not very good. I know, I know. "Blasphemy!" I hear you cry! Revoke my weeb card! But truly, I do not understand what had people so captivated by this anime. Actually, that's a lie. I kn…

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya should be watched in a chronological order. The broadcast order deviates from a linear timeline, which can cause confusion. It is an exciting story, full of unpredictable twists and turns. One of the most intriguing aspects in this story is a developing relationship between two main characters, Haruhi and Kyon. The characters are unique and well-defined, and each has a compelling personal story that adds brilliance to the plot. It is the character of Haruhi who makes her different from others because she has unnatural sense of right and wrong. She constantly seeks amusement and craves for adventures, which often leads to funny moments when she drags her club the SOS Brigade. While there is a slight romantic undertone, it doesn't lead to anything substanti…

If Haruhi was a guy, everyone would hate them... Since years I wanted to watch the show cause it was so popular and I really liked to watch something that would start simple and funny and turn into romantic drama. Well, the romantic drama wasn't really such a long part, so forget that. The other part was just pretty boring. Or even annoying. Guess, maybe that is the message of that anime. It is so boring, so we can feel Haruhi's boredom. And when something exciting happens, it gets better. But even if you see the anime in that light, it is... only 4 stars for me. Most is just inner monologe and whenever Haruhi does something "funny". It is harassing Mikuru. It is soooo uncomfortable to watch. Even for ecchi Anime fans... There are such better ways to implement funny moments like these, wi…

This review is for the entire show, taking into account both seasons and the movie. If you were around and watching anime in the late 2000s, this show constituted an all-consuming obsession which was impossible to miss. For a time, it was the biggest show that didn't break containment into the wider culture. If you went to a con, you saw people trying that dance every half hour at least, and even fewer getting it right. Furious debate wreathed all discussion of this show, and if you didn't watch it yourself, you definitely saw your friends or relatives who did, worn down by the endless eight. In short, this anime is a monumental cultural touchstone, both for the otaku that lived through it, and those who are only just now discovering it. Even for those who have no idea what I'm talking ab…

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is quite a bit hard to describe and, to my knowledge, entirely unique. Attempts in any terms that seem ‘objective’ would almost seem to be missing the point that seems alluded to throughout the entire show. You won’t get a clear message, you won’t even get a clear story for different points (you will feel the broad strokes) I can’t affirm whatever it is talking about or trying to convey, but I can say how I started thinking and engaging with it. Certain media can incite that kind of power, and this for me is one of them. I can’t really put it on a ‘this is an objective masterpiece I will worship’ type of acclaim, which to me feels pointless, but I can say in all the manners I feel why this is enjoyable. It uses a variety of means to provoke certain feeli…

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu is an anime with a unique and nostalgic feeling when someone watches it for the first time these days, as it has aspects that bring together slice of life, school life, comedy and even science fiction, especially due to the adventures of Haruhi Suzumiya and the Brigade SOS. A great classic from Kyoto Animation and it is an anime that shows many of the aspects presented in the anime produced by the studio, the nostalgic and unique aspect is something that catches my attention, it seems that you want to see more episodes of the anime as soon as you finish watching it. The soundtrack is excellent and striking, the animation is unique and well produced, the theme is excellent for an anime of this genre and the character development is very good. It's an anime that de…

Wow, where do I even begin with The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya? This anime has completely stolen my heart with its captivating storyline and hilarious characters. Let me just say, the comedy in this show is top-notch! Haruhi Suzumiya, the main character, is an absolute riot. Her boundless enthusiasm and wild ideas lead to the craziest adventures you can imagine. I found myself laughing out loud so many times, it's just pure fun! And the characters, oh my goodness! Each one of them is so well-developed and likable in their own way. Kyon, the protagonist, is the perfect straight man to Haruhi's antics, and their interactions are just gold. The whole gang in the SOS Brigade, Mikuru, Yuki, and Itsuki, have such a fantastic dynamic together. They really feel like a close-knit group of frie…

This covers the two series, and I suppose the franchise in general (I just watched the two series) The title of this review should be: THIS IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. The anime. This is a really weird anime, but the weirdest thing about it isn't what happens in the plot itself (which don't get me wrong, it is weird), but the relationship with it's audience. Why? Because it's only enjoyable if, and only if, you're the target audience. What is the target audience? Teenagers that are weirdos/who doesn't fit really well in... well, school. Let me elaborate on this. This anime is somewhat reassuring for people like this (people like me years ago!). Is that kind of story you need to watch when you have few friends, and you feel that the world doesn't understand you and yada yada yada. And the se…
