Wistoria: Wand and Sword

Wistoria: Wand and Sword

Introduction

When humanity was oppressed by mysterious foes known as the Celestial Hosts, five exceptional mages joined forces to defeat them. In fear that these formidable enemies would return, the five most powerful mages, known as the Magia Vander, built a magical dome and a tower to contain them. Since then, the five strongest mages of every generation are tasked with monitoring the dome from the top of the Wizard's Tower. Inspired by this story, childhood friends Will Serfort and Elfaria Albis Serfort promised each other that they would climb to the top of the Wizard's Tower. However, now a sixth-year student at Regarden Magic Academy, Will's future looks bleak. Although Elfaria managed to join the ranks of the Magia Vander five years prior thanks to her unparalleled magical power, Will has no magical abilities whatsoever, attracting the ire of teachers and students alike. However, blessed with an exceptional physique, Will is able to slay monsters in the labyrinth and prevail against skilled magicians with the only aid of his sword and a few magical items. Determined to climb the Wizard's Tower at all cost, Will is determined to not let anyone or anything prevent him from keeping the promise he made to Elfaria. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I haven't seen Black Clover, nor do I plan to anytime soon because 170 episodes is a bit much, but I really loved Wistoria's premise. I was hooked from the first episode, and Will immediately became the centrepiece of the show for me. After Ep. 2, I spent the rest of the season invested in his journey and everything he stands for. Watching him overcome such overwhelming adversity while remaining so pure of heart and unwavering in his determination to reunite with Elfaria may be cliché, but it still made his story surprisingly emotional. His journey is driven by the promise he made to the person he loves most, which gives his seemingly impossible goal so much heart. The discrimination against Will can get frustrating, especially when characters like Sion, Julius, and Edward are so obnoxiou…

Wistoria certainly won't be liked by everyone, but it's not likely you'll hate it either. Most likely, this anime will give you quite mixed feelings. I'll start by saying that from the very first episode, this anime feels like it was made pretty much for kids, but at the same time, it tries to be deeper than just a kids show. It introduces you to a very magical and wonderful world with edgy character designs, common archetypes, with the good guy main character, good girl side character and bad guy side character presented to you right away. This made me think that this does not worth a watch initially, but later episodes have proved that not everything is that simple. I also haven't watched any of the entries other reviewers talk about, so no Black Clover or Danmachi. I will review it kee…

If you've seen Danmachi or Mashle, you've basically already seen this. The story appears kinda interesting at first but since the author also made Danmachi, the similarities just start piling up. This show would be rated higher were it based solely on music and especially animation. but the writing really holds it back. It really sucks because the premise and designs are great but all the interest goes out the window once you realize that it's all just background noise to glazing Bell-er, sorry, Will, the main character. If you want to make a relatable main character, he or she needs realistic flaws. An underdog story about a guy being bad at rock-paper-scissors is pointless if you give him a gun (sword) (and also superhuman speed and strength???) instead. This can work if used comedic-ally…

[Hood Review] So this was one of them anime I had sitting on my “To Watch” list for a little while. I really didn’t know what to expect going in, but this is definitely one of them ones‼️ I’m honestly surprised it’s not a little more popular because this shit damn near completely blew my mind. 😂 It’s REALLY good. You got an overpowered-ass main character in a world full of racist mfs, so naturally you’re gonna be rooting for bro the whole way through. 💀😂 Now that I think about it, this anime is literally like Black Clover in a different universe if you’ve seen Black Clover. The main character is an outcast who uses a sword in a world where everybody else uses magic. Sound familiar? 😂 Black Clover is slightly better in my opinion, but the similarities are definitely there. So if you…

Story This anime mimics a great deal of plots from other shows like Black Clover, I Parry Everything, and Mashle. The overarching main plot has yet to be revealed, meaning the narrative heavily relies on tropes you've likely seen executed elsewhere. Art & Animation This is where the series shines. The art style is very clean, high-quality, and beautifully drawn. While the animated scenes during the fights are nothing extraordinary, they are very well put together and definitely captivating once the action gets going. Character When you begin watching this, you will not be seeing anything new from the protagonist or the side characters. They fit perfectly into standard genre molds, offering little in the way of fresh personality or unexpected development. Enjoyment Seeing the immedia…

It is visually good, but narratively too conventional to deserve a higher rating, the fights are dynamic, the direction knows how to convey speed and strength, the settings have plenty of detail and some confrontations show a quality far superior to what is usually found in a school fantasy of this type, the music also helps elevate the action moments and makes several scenes feel more epic than they really are at a narrative level, Will, the protagonist, is easy to support because he does not abandon his goal despite the contempt he receives, and i liked that his strength does not depend solely on possessing a secret unexplained power, but also on his training, knowledge of monsters and ability to adapt during battles, the problem is that the story uses a formula that is too familiar, a p…

Man where do I even start with this one? I went into Wistoria mostly blind after seeing some hype online and a couple of clips and honestly it absolutely floored me. I sat down thinking I would watch a few episodes over the weekend and ended up bingeing all twelve in basically one go. Time just disappeared. By the time the ending song of episode twelve hit I was sitting there like wait it is already over? That is how you know something is special. The setup sounds familiar at first. A magic academy where everyone can sling spells except our boy Will Serfort. But it never felt like cheap underdog bait. Will is not some secret chosen one with broken powers or a tragic backstory. He is just a stubborn hardworking dude who promised his childhood friend he would reach the top of the tower no m…

I think I misjudged Wistoria (SEASON 1). Its narrative approach is quite unusual compared to what we normally see. The MC is already a largely complete character living in a deeply flawed world. His struggles are mostly internal and stem from a society that simply doesn’t allow him to fit in. The story is built around the gradual, organic, and sometimes violent evolution of that environment to reach his level, despite his status as an outcast. What I find exceptional is that, while constantly delivering payoffs, the series carefully builds a final conflict through steadily accumulated tension. The world initially seems fairly well defined, but the last episodes hint at an almost addictive depth through the lore, expanding on previously established elements that were left intentionally vag…

TL:DR: This will probably be an epic anime to binge once it's completed, but until then, we'll probably be drip-fed 12 episodes a year trying to get to the "meat and potatoes" of the story. I'll get straight to the point. I binged both seasons of this show in 3-4 days, and mostly enjoyed doing so. My main issue with the show is the fact that it hints at things that promise to be interesting, only to leave them for later seasons. I wouldn't really call it a pacing problem, as each episode leaves you wanting to see more, but after 12 episodes, it just feels like we never really got into the "meat and potatoes of the story. Season 1 definitely leaves you wanting to watch season 2 to get to the "good stuff," but after watchhing season 2 it's the same feeling, and season 3 will probably take…

The main story in Wistoria is something that has been done many times. This time it was done fairly well, but without anything special. The animation is incredibly well-made - like, really well-made, but that's about it. Overall, the story is something you want to watch while chilling. Some may see this as a downside, and some as a benefit. I quite enjoyed it, but we have seen these types of problems and solutions before, where the main character gets through challenges through sheer will. There isn't really a lot to write about. You can easily find these kinds of tropes elsewhere. Because of the lack of originality paired with the really nice animation, I can easily give it a 7/10, but nothing more, because nothing special really happens.

Wistoria provides nothing new to this genre where MC is considered worthless. In the magic dominated world, he strives to stand at the top with no magic power and just pure strength to show. Plenty of other anime have the same content but the execution is what separates them and makes it memorable. The MC, Will, is considered worthless and ridiculed throughout the series because he cannot use magic. However, he has exceptional strength which he cultivated with years of dungeon training and honing his battle skills. He is motivated to join the top most skilled mages in the world, called Magia Vanders, through pure strength and determination (and love). Throughout the series, nothing stuck me as memorable. Rather, I was restless to complete the season as soon as possible. The animation how…

There’s nothing particularly special about this anime. Imagine Danmachi combined with Black Clover, and you get Wistoria. The visuals are quite good; the story is clichéd; the characters aren’t particularly special; and the MC is even overly over-the-top. One unfortunate thing is that the pace of this anime feels rushed. For some reason, seeing this rushed story reminds me of the pace of most manhwa. The characters in this anime are over-the-top and feel like the author is deliberately dramatizing them, both the MC with his weaknesses and the other supporting characters. What I mean is, there’s no need to explain that the MC is weak in almost every episode, and there’s no need to dramatize it to that extent. There’s actually a lot more to discuss. But this anime is simply like Fujino Omori…

A total waste of time that will never come back. The show looked promising at first, 7.8 rating at MAL for the first season and a 8.2 for the second one. Going in blind, the premise seemed interesting enough. In a world full of magic users equipped with wands, we follow probably the only useless talentless boy in the entire universe that cannot muster any amount of magic potency whatsoever (He's completely dry on that department allegedly), intriguing surely. But it doesn't end there obviously, of course he's got to have super human strength or else he really will be a useless nobody, and we can't have our MC be that now can we? Here's the funny part, he's op, everyone seems to notice how op he really is at one point or another, and then go back to forget that shortly after. they say "W…

Gonna keep this one short... It's good, it's not great. It's basically shounen Harry Potter with a ton of overdone tropes. A childhood promise between a boy and girl. A main character with a heart of gold. A meteoric rise in social status when he proves hiimself amongst his naysaying peers. A laundry list of love interests fawning over him. A way-too-over-quantified system for describing character/enemy power levels. A ready made for stores cute plush animal sidekick. It's all there. The animation is lovely and the action scenes are intense. If you like watching wizards duke it out this one is golden. If you like intricate world building and storylines that truly captivate then this one might not be for you. The pacing is good: the fights resolve in appropriate time while still carrying e…

Decided to watch it after reading the synopsis. I would suggest it to people who liked animes like black clover or mashle. I have watched a good amount of magic type of animes and i thought i would get bored but the characters really pulled me in. especially the mc, for some reason he reminded me of deku from mha. him and sion ( red hair dude) lowkey gave me deku and bakugo vibes. apart from that, I liked all the characters personalities. and the pacing was pretty good. If your a new anime watcher and love flashy fight scenes, would totally reccomend.

I believe in that everyones time is precious, since time is something thats so scarce and unrewindable. this anime really has a great pacing and doesnt even tries to stall, which most of animes doesnt even try to bother themselves with “respecting reader/watcher (consumer)’s time” you dont have to last 100 200 eps or 400/500 chapters to be a good anime/manga just tell your story without dragging things and pack your finale up sure you might not be the most selling manga but as a watcher ill be making sure to respect your choice to care about consumers time, great serie guys definitely a hidden gem

I can understand why my virgin anime friend recommended this to me, but for me, nothing in this series is new, and none of the tropes are executed well enough to be truly interesting. The main hook for most people would be the animation quality. However, it’s a magic-based power system, so does it really matter if it’s just better-looking dull magic circles spitting fire everywhere? As for the world, you get nothing but a lazy, generic copy of every other fantasy anime. That said, the anime isn’t bad for what it is. I’d only recommend it if you haven’t already watched a handful of magical academy fantasy anime.

Quite good productions values completely trashed by horrible writing. So much of the story just doesn't hold up to even the slightest bit of scrutiny. One of the big things about the world is that there are supremely talented magicians in a tower that apparently need to keep the sky sunny. Apparently the people of this world had lived for centuries or possibly even millenia with cloudy, stormy skies, never having once seen the sun. So why did they all yearn to see a sunny sky? How would they even have the concept of a sunny sky to strive for? And furthermore, we're being told that, if the magicians' barrier fails and the sky reverts back to how it existed for eons, this will somehow be a cataclysmic event that will destroy civilization? Why would it be such a disaster to revert to how th…

The story is definitely incomplete, so do not go into this show expecting a conclusion. There are many mysteries and open plot threads introduced even in the final episode, so for now I cannot explicitly recommend watching this show. If you are fine with this, then you will probably find that this show is a fairly competent struggle power fantasy story about a misfit exceeding expectations through hard work and grit. Lots of flashy fight scenes and the show is entertaining to say the least. It's essentially like a version of Mashle where everyone is a model, but without the hiding. There is a fair amount of substance, although much of it is delivered through flashbacks. I really struggle to enjoy shows that only provide context at critical moments, since it often feels like there is no re…

Wistoria: Wand and Sword was a solid watch that surprised me more than I expected. I really liked the underdog angle of Will being unable to use magic in a world where magic is everything, and seeing him rely on pure effort and swordsmanship made his fights feel earned. The action scenes were easily the highlight, with strong animation and a sense of impact that kept things exciting. That said, the story follows familiar magic-academy tropes, and some characters feel underdeveloped, which holds it back from being great. Even so, it’s an enjoyable anime with enough heart and hype moments to stay engaging throughout. Overall, Wistoria is a fun and dependable fantasy series that I’d give a 7/10.
