Umamusume: Pretty Derby - Beginning of a New Era

Introduction

Running in the highest level of horse racing, the Twinkle Series, is the dream of many horse girls. Although she has only taken part in freestyle racing before, horse girl Jungle Pocket discovers that very same aspiration after she witnesses Fuji Kiseki's tremendous victory on a grand stage. Equipped with unwavering self-confidence, Jungle Pocket is quickly able to accumulate a few victories, allowing her to participate in higher-level races. When Jungle Pocket takes part in her first G1 race alongside another rising racer—the highly intelligent and eccentric Agnes Tachyon—she realizes the enormous gap in their abilities. However, that only motivates Jungle Pocket even further as she resolves to get her revenge against Tachyon by winning the honored Triple Crown Classic title the following year. Although the world of horse racing is never predictable or easy, Jungle Pocket is determined to take down Tachyon and herald the beginning of a new era. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I should start this by saying, that I had watched this movie with a friend (who had previously only seen anything uma musume via Cinderella Gray) after watching Road to the top. By the time we got to it, it was already 1am and the fact I was tired, in retrospect, really didn't help the movie. While my friend seemed to enjoy it a lot, both the character portrayal and mood had me feel more on the fence about it. My friend had frequently joked about Dansatsu flame feeling pointless. However I think she does about what one would expect of a supporting character. However, any dramatic scenes felt a bit weird, because one really doesn't get to see her, or her motivations, much at all, which was definitely a bit of a miss. Manhatten Cafe similarly was a fine supporting character, though a bit c…

SPOILER-FREE OVERVIEW --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Umamusume Beginning of a New Era (BOANE) is my favourite entry out of the entire franchise and is a must-watch for fans. Even if one hasn’t consumed any Umamusume content, the movie does a really good job at explaining the basic premise and its characters. That being said, I do not fully recommend watching it in this manner as it takes away from the full experience. Cygames have always one-upped themselves when it comes to the anime. Thus, the best way to experience this movie would be after watching the prior entries so you can understand how much the series has evolved. Umamusume’s stories have always been based on true events and BOANE is no exception, adapt…

Umamusume: Pretty Derby - Beginning of a New Era Your typical Umamusume, you know what you’re getting and you will be satisfied by the end of it, being the excitement of seeing horse girls running around racing each other. Due to it being a movie, naturally, it will feel a bit rushed. Don’t worry it doesn’t feel so rushed that it takes away your enjoyment or becomes hard to follow. The atmosphere of the movie is a selling point. It does well to sell the moment, get you hooked especially in the races. There are themes of regret and self-doubt, which are handled pretty nicely, considering it’s a movie format. The animation is top-notched, as expected from CygamesPictures. 9/10 If you're already a fan of this series, it's a no-brainer. Here's my breakdown in details: Story 7.5/10 In terms…

As someone who watched all umamusume series this movie is true disappointment. The story is poorly written, full of weird moments and sounds, and scenes that were really cringe to watch, the story lacks point of racing and is full of weird behaviour and something you never saw in earlier series. Also putting Oguri, Haru etc as "support characters" is pure nonsense because they barely have 5 seconds of screen time. This is total waste of time if you are Umamusume fan. The only good thing is the animations. It was really boring to watch and i forced myself to complete it.

The Beginning of a New Era looks undeniably impressive: strong lighting, expressive character work, and race sequences carry real visual energy. Yet that’s where most of the praise ends. The core issue is the hollow narrative. The protagonist, as generic as it gets, leaps from seeing a single race to already being elite with almost no development. The drive behind her rise is a vague desire to be “the strongest.” It makes her genuinely irritating to sit through; she repeats her goal so often that it feels like she says it more in one film than Luffy declares he’ll be Pirate King or Naruto says he’ll become Hokage across hundreds of episodes. At one point, I felt that if I had to hear that annoying girl shout she wants to be the “strongest” one more time, I might go insane. Skipping any mea…

Before writing the review, I'll start by saying that I've seen the first three seasons of Pretty Derby, so I know what I expected in terms of the story, but not the execution. Let me explain. The movie is a "shortened" version of what happens in the other seasons: the umas running, having fun running, and aiming to be the strongest (naturally with different protagonists and supporting characters). The problem, however, is that I lied about one thing: the movie no longer focuses on the goals I listed above. Instead, the whole thing is transformed into a shonen drama devoid of color, music, or any kind of positive emotion, making the work much more serious and macabre, going against the grain of Uma musume, which I also like. This is a negative point, but in the end, I don't want to give it…

They finally released this movie in the states so I finally got a chance to watch it. Jungle Pocket is very interesting because you get to see her imposter syndrome first-hand take place and how it strangles her regarding her losses to Tachyon and how she is unable to overcome them since she has no opportunity to race against Tachyon again and put her apprehensions to rest, which I think is a pretty interesting way to handle a rival dynamic. After I got out of the movie, I saw that the Nintendo Switch version of Pretty Dash was on sale like 70% off, so I bought it up, obviously its just a spinoff, but you know, may as well since I'm in the mood. I wonder if Jungle Pocket's stomach feels ticklish when running, since her racing outfit just has her midriff totally exposed. It would complete…

I haven't written a review on here in a very long time. Mostly I chalk that up having no need to. Any movie I see, I can log on Letterboxd; a more convenient, more slick, more expansive app that also happens to have my friends on it. I also have my friends, ones I see frequently; some who like anime and are happy to discuss and others who indulge me for my sake. I haven't written a review on here in a very long time, but I felt it necessary after seeing this. I am not an Umamusume watcher. I was originally going to drive a good half hour to the next town to play some card games, but I didn't leave in time and decided I should go see a movie. My partner has been sick and I figured I should get out the house and I try to see any anime that are shown at my theater. I have heard people prais…

Uma Musume: Beginning of a New Era is an absolute explosion of a film from start to finish, bursting at the seams with as much vibrancy and intensity as you could possibly cram into a single movie. The exhilaration you expect from the races is present in full force, but with an exponentially more unhinged presentation. These horse girls seem to be practically breaking out of their own character designs during the most intense moments, and the spectacular light show accompanying each push forward was simply dazzling. This intensity is also present in the non-racing scenes, with the many confrontations between Jungle Pocket and Agnes Tachyon oozing with cinematic style and thematic symbolism. Even the calmer moments have an emotional and cinematic tension to them that refused to let me look…

The first part of the film is good, but then it gets really bad. Jungle Pocket is portrayed as a bland character with the "I want to be the strongest" cliché motivation, it wouldn't be a problem if she wasn't the protagonist and this need to have her keep saying that buzzword over and over. Agnes Tachyon is her co-protagonist and she does well in the first part of the film - albeit also being a recurrent type of character in anime -, but they changed the focus in the second part and, for the plot, they force Agnes Tachyon on Jungle Pocket's "character development." It all feels too unnatural, we get some reactions in the film that are similar to what happened in real life - at least from what I could find online -, however the film belittles Jungle Pocket's achievements too much. i think those who has no idea what uma musume is for can enjoy this movie because it's a huge contrast to the light-hearted yet slightly tearjerking slice-of-life the first three season offered it dipped into a more serious, psychological thematics that works for the featured uma musume here i was blown away, it's what i was kinda looking for that i'm bummed that wasn't really utilized in the first 3 seasons no spoiling of what hits me the most because the movie should show it, not with my own words though, if you prefer comical cute girls doing cute things, then this isn't for you

Everything about this movie is shallow and mid. I'll try to keep this review short so i wont really get into details i guess. Also mind you this is my first umamusume media. Characters: Where do i even begin? Jungle Pocket our main character is kind off a Luffy clone who wants to be the strongest uma and thats that, she has obnoxious moments(im not talking about that yelling scene it was fun) but overall typical shounen mc. And then there is Agnes Tachyon which is safe to assume why most people are mainly watching for and what can i say She's a stereotypical "mad scientist" and the whole reason for her yandere'ish looks and persona is so that she could be a dommy mommy rather then some boring nerd that you wouldnt let her do dangerous experiments on your balls😏. Now the reason why i…

After watching this movie i just have to say how insanely banger it was. i don’t know how a studio manages to keep such a high level of quality for so long, and still improve year after year. Uma Musume: Pretty Derby for me is something i simply can’t let go of anymore, and just like all the others, this one stayed banger from start to finish, just like its predecessors and probably like the ones that will come after it too. what an incredible movie. what amazing races. what an unsettling amount of depth. and what an urge it gives me to just go outside and run. this film solidified how good i really think Uma Musume: Pretty Derby (everything about it) actually is, and that’s something i never imagined i’d end up saying. i always had some hesitation before watching it, but now i just feel…

My God, what did I just watch — this is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. I can’t believe how a story about horse girls who just want to race can be this good and move me so much. The evolution from the first season to this movie is insane. I honestly thought there was no way to improve after watching Road to the Top, but they actually did it. This is just unbelievable — such a beautiful and emotional story, insanely good animation, and a flawless soundtrack. And once again, they nerfed the coolest horse girl — why, God, why? Also, I loved seeing characters from other seasons again; the only one missing was Teio. And how crazy is it that I just saw an edit of Haru, got curious about the franchise, and in such a short time it became one of my favorite works of all time.

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Beginning of a New Era may quite simply be the prettiest in the entire series. As a movie, it has the space to capture all that makes Umamusume so wonderful: winning drive, rivalry, and the heartbreak that accompanies the chase for a dream. It also feels distinctly separate from the main series, though. This time, it's Jungle Pocket, who's much more cocky and confident than some of the other heroes, but you can tell behind that attitude that she's got a lot of self-doubt. I enjoyed that about her. She's questioning what victory even is to her and whether or not she deserves it. That mix of swagger and insecurity made her a really engaging main character to follow. Agnes Tachyon, though, completely stole the spotlight for me. She’s so different from any other Uma…

Umamusume fans, you've already watched this. So, I'm going to try and make a case for non Umamusume fans to set aside 2 hours and give this a shot. This movie does a number of things particularly well. First, the visuals are simply superb. Its both breathtakingly high fidelity at times, then experimental and weird at others, like a mix between a Shinkai and a Yuasa movie. If nothing else, the eye candy makes it a worthwhile watch alone. Second, it does a great job of juggling several character stories, which keeps the pacing tight. The characters develop little by little until their arc concludes, and then, like dominos, the lessons they learn help the other characters reach their conclusions too. It's a more subtle framing of the "power of friendship" theme that feels more grounded in l…

This movie must be one of the most successful and beloved entries of the franchise and it's easy to see why, animation and art direction are top-notch, everyone of the main cast have a certain quirk that can make you become a new fan of theirs and the main narrative, while being almost a carbon copy of previous entries, works fine for a spokon. This movie is good, but the reason I don't gave it that much of a credit besides visuals it's precisely because of its narrative, my harshest observation may be my dislike for the main character whom may come as the blandest protagonist of the series, a run-of-the-mill "i wanna be the best and i'll beat ya, believe it!" shonen protagonist that some love it and others hate it, i just dislike it. The second and last harsh observation is its tone, this…

To be perfectly honest, I couldn't finish this movie. I had already watched the 1st 3 seasons as well as the OVAs and expected this one to be a well produced wild ride of excitement. But as others have said, this is not that. It's well (enough) produced, but the problems are numerous to the point of an Umamusume fan not getting at all what they're used to consuming and likely being disappointed as I was. Imagine always going to Chick-fil-A for a spicy deluxe chicken sandwich and one day they give you a corndog. Not entirely bad in and of itself, but not at all what you were expecting. For one, the painfully noticeable lack of a soundtrack made for awkwardly quiet and tense scenes all over the place. The sound design felt like they forgot to match the visuals with the audio, as several tim…

English This is on another level—what an insane movie, simply S-P-E-C-T-A-C-U-L-A-R in every possible way! Starting with the animation: absolutely breathtaking. Since it was made by the same studio behind the game, the quality is undeniable—they spared no effort. It’s easily one of the most visually stunning works I’ve ever seen. The direction is outstanding: the way it shifts from an eagle-eye view to the protagonist’s POV, then to a side shot that captures the intensity of all the racers, and back again to POV. Sure, we’ve seen similar sequences in previous races of the franchise, but here it’s just on a GOD-TIER level. The OST is flawless, and the seiyuu performances are phenomenal. Sumire Uesaka, A.K.A. Agnes—what an incredible aura she radiates with her performance! As for the scri…
