Baka & Test: Summon the Beasts

Baka & Test: Summon the Beasts

Introduction

Fumizuki Academy is not a typical Japanese high school. This unique institution has implemented a new and innovative system to sort its students. At the end of their freshman year, students take a test that divides up the student body. The highest scorers are placed into A class, all the way down until F class, for the lowest of the low. Unfortunately for Akihisa Yoshii, his supposedly "great" intellect was not quite enough for such a test, and he is now stuck at the bottom of F class. Naturally, F class has the worst facilities: not only rotten tatami mats and broken tables, but also outdated equipment and worn out furniture. On the bright side, his friend Yuuji Sakamoto is in the same class, and to everyone's surprise, the genius girl Mizuki Himeji has also ended up in the same class due to an unforeseen fever on the day of the test. Unsatisfied with their perquisites, F class rallies behind Yuuji, determined to take on the higher-tiered classes in order to seize their perks by using the school's Examinations Summon Battle system. The participants can summon fantasy characters—whose power levels are equal to their student's test scores—in an all-out battle. Will F class be able to rise to the top, or will they live up to everyone's expectations and fail? [Written by MAL Rewrite]

A fast-paced comedy anime. It's quite endearing, but I'm not sure there's much about it that stands out from other shows of its type. It's an above-average example of its type and quite entertaining if one is in the mood for a tropey, light-hearted show. There's really not much else to say: it's competently made, the designs are serviceable and the story moves along briskly. I will say that is probably the strongest praise I can give it; it just throws a lot of gags and visual humor at the viewer, making it difficult to be bored, but also difficult to remember anything specific about it. It's more of a comfortable haze of returning gags, where enjoyment coms more from recognition and familiarity: nothing really surprising happens at any point. The gags aren't something you laugh at, but…

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu is the run-of-the-mill basic comedy school show with a twist to spice it up, in this case the twist is a system where a standardized test determines your classroom and facilities, A being the best and F being the worst, it adds a system of fights with mini versions of the character which they can battle with and fight to rise classrooms, of course it has its added fan service and cliche character types. To most this "genre" has been oversaturated for years, and I totally agree, however, Baka to Test stands out and surprisingly surpasses my expectations. Where most comedy animes fail to actually be funny Baka to Test does it right, I think the way Yuuji and Shouko interact is mildly funny, the jokes about Hideyoshi are funny. That being said It still is very ba…

It’s surprising that the genre list on MAL doesn't include "parody," as that’s exactly what this anime feels like. While not particularly amazing, it’s not awful either. The beginning was actually quite entertaining and fun, although it took me a little time to adjust to the art style. During battles, the art is typical of most anime, but the “everyday school life” scenes are filled with strange backgrounds, weird shadows, and patterns that initially seemed a bit jarring. While unexpected, this unique approach does add originality, which is a positive. The comedy here falls into the “so bad, it’s good” category. It’s not about clever jokes but rather the sheer absurdity of the situations that makes you laugh. It’s clear early on that taking this anime seriously is impossible, as the relat…

Baka & Test is a very anime-esque comedy anime in the sense that it makes use of a lot of tropes that you won't find in other mediums. It is mostly episodic and is the only anime I know that brought about a new gender; Hideyoshi. Obviously comedy is subjective but I think the way that this anime does comedy is pretty neat. It makes a lot of small jokes and doesn't take them too seriously. So even though I'm not a fan of e.g. jokes about excessive nosebleeds or strangleholds they're all short and unimportant scenes that are over before I can get annoyed. This means that you can enjoy the parts that you do like while easily ignoring the parts that can bother you. The characters are 2D, both because of the animation and because they're not very deep. They are pretty unique though and work…

*Brief Review-Reflections* ~~ *Baka to Test* clearly comes from the late 2000s to early 2010s era of anime adaptations of high school-based light novels, and there was an alarming abundance of them over the course of those years, so much so that the very tag can be a turn-off due to oversaturation. Yet the thick scent *Baka to Test* has on its back revitalized me instead due to a successful execution of that good-ol' anime humor, making me blissfully engaged with taintless nostalgia. Although the anime functions with formulaic components, there is sufficient creativity and imaginative sparkles in making the gears turn. The snappy wits in its comedy never run out of steam and unique ways to be integrated into both mundane and important affairs. And when it comes to unoriginal jokes, e.g…

Even though this review is weirdly written this is still my full on opinion on this anime. ALSO MINOR SPOILER ALERT PROBABLY. Now with Baka in the name you might think this is about idiots trying to become better at school. That is half true, they are still idiots and will forever stay idiots yet the person who made this story can be called an idiot because he is a genius. And geniuses can only make good things. Because that is what a genius is all about right? Now to talk about why you should watch this anime. It is funny that is all I actually I have to say about this anime. If you go with the expectation that this is going to be a serious anime with serious romance and serious jokes you are wrong. The only thing you will get in this anime is goofy jokes, goofy romance and a goofy ani…

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu is something of a forgotten relic of the early 2010s. It’s not uncommon to hear it mentioned in discussions of the era, but praise for it is always qualified in some way, usually by a suggestion that it has probably aged poorly. That’s not entirely unwarranted. Baka to Test is tropey to be sure, and feels generic in ways typical of its era, but what was good about it in 2010 is largely still good today. It has strong comedy, expressive animation, and good characters; that keeps it consistently enjoyable (at least when the high concept ideas aren't at center stage). Those high concept ideas do seriously get in the way of the show rather frequently. There are two of them, one far more obtrusive than the other. The first is a grades based ranking system which sort…

This show isn't a Kubrick film, and it isn't trying to be. Turn your brain off, have fun, and and enjoy. The premise for Fumizuki Academy is really fun, and the test wars are all so enjoyable to watch. The humor is often too pervy for my taste, but this show just has so much heart that I love it anyway. As far as LGBTQ+ representation goes, it was huge for me in high school to see some of these characters, but it also admittedly misses the mark at times. Even with all it's flaws, this is a show that I still love coming back to.

Baka to Test is a random gag and slapstick comedy about idiots in a school that separates classes based on virtual battles of monsters who empower with test results. And as cool as that sounds, in practice it is nothing but random comedy skits. The story is, as usually goes with comedies, nothing but a poor excuse to put the characters in a situation where the method used has nothing to do with the solution. It could be anything about anything leading to anything and you wouldn’t tell the difference. Supposed, each class has virtual battles to improve their studying facilities. For all intents and purposes, there is an objective here; to get better scores and transfer to better classes or improve their own. All of which can fit in two episodes tops. Having virtual worlds where mascot mons…

This is a show that made me laugh and had a fun enjoyable story with fun and charming characters. I may be a little biased but this show just connected with me for some reason. Yuji is the best character and I love the little Pokémon type battles that they have! I also think the romance was really cute and fun to watch. It’s not a hard story driven show, it’s just meant to be watched for a fun time and I really appreciate what this show had to offer! If you’re looking for a show with a fun premise that doesn’t take itself seriously then I think you’ll enjoy this show, maybe not as much as I did but hopefully to some amount.

Part 1 English Part 2 Bahasa Indonesia -------------------------------------- Right, so here we have Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu, or as I like to call it, Dumb and Dumber Go to School. This anime is like a wacky sitcom with a dash of magic thrown in. The premise is simple - a group of idiotic students attend a school where their test scores determine their class and quality of life. But here's the twist - they can summon avatars to battle each other in a virtual world. It's like a bizarre mash-up of Harry Potter and Yu-Gi-Oh. The humor is definitely the highlight of the show. The characters are all lovable goofballs with their own quirks and personalities. And the battles between the avatars are just plain silly. But let's be honest here, the plot is about as thin as a wafer. It's basi…

I've seen the same basic plot done elsewhere but better. School with a social class system based on performance and technology way beyond what should exist in the real world. Is this like it's own genre? I guess what sets Baka and Test apart is the fact that it doesn't take itself seriously in the slightest. This is a comedy through and through. Anything remotely approaching a plot is actually just the setup for the next joke. It's lighthearted and actually had me laughing now and then. I liked most of the characters and their interactions, and the romantic pairings were all pretty funny except the boring love triangle. Don't pick either one, go with the trap Baka-kun. I'm honestly sick of love triangles, it's emotionally exhausting trying to pretend to care about both girls at the same t…

I never watched full-on comedic animes before this one. The only anime I watched before this that made me slightly smile was, believe it or not, FMAB. But that was only a smile, a slight grin, a small chuckle. This anime made me laugh out loud, so loud it probably woke up my neighbours at 12 AM (and yes I do sleep at 10, I do not want to be scolded by mom, however at the time it was the correct decision) Story: School. School has alphabetical letters to determine students' stupidity. Point is to get from last to first, courtesy of the 2nd greatest dumbass in the world, Akihisa right next to Gintoki. Very simple story but the comedy turned a 7ish story into a 9 in literal waves. The story perfectly caters to the knee-slapping comedy. Perfection at its finest, 10/10. Art: It's not that bad…

“It is those who possess wisdom who are the greatest fools. History has shown us this. You could say that this is the final warning from God to those who resist.” – Rintaro Okabe “The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubt, while the stupid people are full of confidence.” – Charles Bukowski I put two quotes here not to summarize or explain the theme of the anime, but I am going to use them as basis for how I understand Baka to Test. It came from a different anime and the meaning couldn’t be considered an analogy if they will be compared; however, I think the anime has a connection to the real world that compares the smart people and the stupid people. Story: 8/10 Discrimination to the idiots is the main theme commonly observed. The main characters are s…

So for this review I figured I'd let you into my experience watching this anime. I didn't enjoy the first three episodes because I feel like they thrust you into the battle system too soon. The whole battling thing is probably one of the weaker parts of this anime in my opinion and the better parts are more when the characters just interact. I didn't get into the groove of this anime until episode 4 which is the first episode that isn't focused on the battles. I think if the first ESB had taken place a little further along in the series after we got more acquainted with the characters instead of right at the start I would've probably enjoyed it more. But yeah I enjoyed it starting with episode 4, don't know how helpful of a review this is but whatever. I think the second season is superi…

First of all, this anime is definitely on my top tier list of funniest comedy animes ever. The anime revolves around the main protagonist Akihisa and his best friend Yuuji with other side characters. The story mainly focuses on comedy the school life and i can't stress it enough how much it makes me laugh the first time and it still makes me laugh the second time i rewatched it. I'm not a person who rewatche animes since i already know the story but man, this anime made me laugh so hard even the second time i watched it since it's that funny. The art style that is very pleasing at least to me :v and the character really shows their uniqueness with every character different from others. Overall i really recommend watching this show during weekend night. Had a Blast watching this

One of the Best Comedy anime out there. The comedy in this anime is nicely timed and you can tell that the VAs are having fun with the way they talk but maybe that what they were directed but the giggles and laughs i have are alot that i needed my feet to count how many i laughed every episodes. Art wise is typical 2011 artstyle but because of that you can feel the authenticity the of when it was made. Character development is average to say the least but oh boy oh boy, the romance is like skin of a fried chicken, you get to taste its deliciousness from the outside already. I may bias with this anime because it one of my fave and have rewatched it more than once so twice only. So please give this anime a chance coz im telling you

Some of my favorite anime are well known and beloved while others may be less known and only fairly well received; Baka & Test is of the latter in this instance. While not mainstream like most shouens are, B&T isn't too unknown in the anime community with seeing mostly passable and "good" reviews but nothing more. For me however, B&T has stayed in my top 20 favorites even since I first watched it back in 2015. Today I'll going to try my best and give it a fair review while also trying to explain the appeal of it. Just as a heads this is a review for both seasons and the 2 OVA episodes, and also some big spoilers ahead Story: 8 As the title suggests, Baka & Test is mainly about idiots and tests. In this series our cast is set in a special school that allows students and teachers to battl…

What a fantastic surprise. I left this anime on hold for over two years, only to find out how fantastic it is. During the COVID-19 pandemic I was looking for something joyful and I only found those tedious harems where the hero is extremely kind and full of virtues while the heroines are weak and always in need of help, in Baka to Test, forget all that! Story: 8 The story is completely unreal, which already makes the purpose of the work clear, making you laugh with the most stereotyped events possible while playing with jargon from other works like Saint Seiya, Yu-gi-oh, among others. The school's students are divided into hierarchical grades based on grades that fight each other for privileges. It looks horrible, but it's fantastic (and it's not because of the synopsis, it's how it was d…
