Barakamon

Introduction

Seishuu Handa is an up-and-coming calligrapher: young, handsome, talented, and unfortunately, a narcissist to boot. When a veteran labels his award-winning piece as "unoriginal," Seishuu quickly loses his cool with severe repercussions. As punishment, and also in order to aid him in self-reflection, Seishuu's father exiles him to the Goto Islands, far from the comfortable Tokyo lifestyle the temperamental artist is used to. Now thrown into a rural setting, Seishuu must attempt to find new inspiration and develop his own unique art style—that is, if boisterous children (headed by the frisky Naru Kotoishi), fujoshi middle schoolers, and energetic old men stop barging into his house! The newest addition to the intimate and quirky Goto community only wants to get some work done, but the islands are far from the peaceful countryside he signed up for. Thanks to his wacky neighbors who are entirely incapable of minding their own business, the arrogant calligrapher learns so much more than he ever hoped to. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

When people recommend slice of life anime you'll hear the same names over and over again. Yuru Camp, Non Non Biyori, March Comes in Like a Lion... and somewhere in that conversation, Barakamon always shows up. At first, I didn't really get the hype. The story is literally about a calligrapher who gets sent to a tiny island after punching an old guy that criticized his work. That's it. No crazy mystery, no romance to keep things interesting, no big emotional hook in the first episode. But after a few episodes, it clicked. Barakamon isn't trying to tell some huge, dramatic story. It's about watching one stubborn guy slowly become a better person because a bunch of noisy island kids and weird neighbors refuse to leave him alone and somehow... that ends up being one of the most satisfying ch…

I just finished Barakamon, and honestly, it feels strange not to consider it excellent. I think it is a solid anime that does some things very well and one thing exceptionally well, but it lacks ambition, complexity, and deeper thematic weight. What it does beautifully is portray an island and its people with a folkloric atmosphere that feels both genuine and charming. Through their aesthetics, dialect, and everyday routines, the series captures a way of life that feels slightly frozen in time. A rotary phone, a store that sells everything, a stubborn fisherman, a local festival, sharing a plate of food — everything feels deeply human. What I find exceptional is Naru, an incredibly charming, spontaneous and sparkling child, like a freshly poured glass of Coke. Her voice acting is magnif…

Barakamon is a comforting, Slice Of life anime but meanwhile it's little bit Painful for me. i find Myself in sensei's Character, I became mad, feels that i am right in everything, But sensei grow up little by little, how about me? i remain that boring character. i wanna go to an island or village but i can't, so i try to change without help of any one. anime visualize Nature beautiful like real nature, leaving in a small house with tatami on the floor isn't a bad Option, i think it's very good but i never tried. i love the parallel scenes start of Episode 1 and End of Ep 12 when sensei and old man talk about ocean.

Barakamon is a fairly straightforward and predictable story, one that you can attempt to summarize after watching only the first episode. That's not to say it's uninteresting or not entertaining, far from it, but it leans on hooking the viewer in on the episodic journey more than the destination. From an animation and art style standpoint, there is nothing to complain about. The Goto Islands are brought to life in sharp, vivid colors and the series never fails to capture the easy-going atmosphere of rural island life. This is complemented with a calming soundtrack, well-cast voice performances (I completed the series in the English dub), and all of these elements are tied together seamlessly and to a high level of overall quality by director Masaki Tachibana. The problem with this series…

Pretty entertaining but sometimes I couldn’t shake the feeling that there were some pedo undertones, or at least, some scenes made me feel weirdly uncomfortable. At first, I thought I was just overthinking it, but the beach episode (5) with the sea slug… that scene had some very strange dialogue and the imagery they choose made things even more suspicious. It doesn’t help that, in the same episode, the teenage girls tell Sensei he could date Naru one day (a literal elementary kid), just fucking gross man, even played for laughs is fucking gross. I definitely laughed and enjoyed some parts, but the pedo vibe was strong and it wouldn’t surprise me if the author, or perhaps, someone involved in the anime (I haven’t read the manga), is a pedo. Call me weird. Episode 5 has some very question…

There are very few anime that brings a piece of peace to your life, it calms and soothes your mind to such an extent that there is a constant smile on your face without any specific reason. Barakamon comes under that special category. Personally I watched this anime during a stressful and hectic phase of my life and thus i believe I was able to enjoy this anime even more, so you can call this review a bit biased but i believe overall this anime is definitely worth watch. With a fresh plot the anime blends the Brilliant animation with it's calm music and bgm in a commendable manner which give the anime a healing sort of vibe. The scenario is realistic and down to ground with good character writing, making the story more relatable. Moreover the passion of Sensei for caligraphy adds a needed…

Barakamon presents a story about artistic frustration, personal growth, and the unexpected ways in which environment and community can reshape a person’s outlook on life. What begins as a professional crisis for a young calligrapher gradually transforms into a quiet journey of self-discovery far away from the pressures of the city. At the center of the story stands Seishuu Handa, a talented calligrapher who has built a reputation for technical precision and elegance in traditional Japanese calligraphy. Despite recognition from the art community, Handa struggles with a deeper insecurity about originality and identity within the craft. The turning point arrives when criticism from a respected calligraphy curator provokes an impulsive reaction. Handa physically confronts the critic during an…

In my MAL bio, I describe how I recently gave up a high-paying position with many hours of overworking to get back in touch with myself and what I love. Before college and my career I watched anime. I thought it was fitting that one of the first anime my spouse suggested we watch in my new life with free time was Barakamon. The anime explores the theme of breaking away from caring too much about one’s career to instead focus on one’s life and what brings happiness. People have careers often to make ever more money to spend ever more money and get sucked into a never-ending cycle. They have careers to be proud of creating something they can be proud of yet it consumes them as they constantly have to manage and maintain it. In this “leaving the city for the country” anime… friends, famil…

The Goto Islands are an archipelago of 140 islands in southern Japan. Administratively, they are part of Nagasaki Prefecture, and the largest island is Fukue. The Goto Islands are considered one of the cradles of Christianity in Japan: Portuguese missionaries began to spread Christianity on these islands in the 16th century. For this reason, there are many Catholic churches on these islands. The local inhabitants of these sparsely populated islands speak the Goto dialect of Japanese, which is considered part of the Hichiku dialect spoken in western Kyushu. A notable feature of the Goto dialect is its simplified structure and lack of long words. The word "Barakamon" is a Goto word that means "energetic/cheerful". The anime "Barakamon" is based on the manga of the same name by Satsuki Yoshi…

Inspiration is hard to draw in a confined environment, especially in artistic avenues, as the world around you fuels your idiosyncrasy. Our individualism is often more pronounced when in the company of diverse personalities, shaping us through newfound experiences, and Barakamon focuses on the impact of nature on personal growth. Seishuu Handa is a gifted calligrapher with little control over his emotions, following his father’s footsteps while making a name for himself. However, his inability to handle criticism prompts his father to banish him to the Goto Islands, a necessary change of pace for him to reflect on his actions and discover himself in the process. The show follows a simple structure, with every episode featuring a set of characters and some activities that they involve Seish…

Growing into adulthood, this anime does a wonderful job showing how the hole that becomes many of our lives becomes a slope in which our world becomes boxed in. As it goes, the main character would arrive to a small town island with the sense of urban spite and closedness that's all too familiar. Yet this ice is broken down by the unlikeliest of people, children. As I've come to know as a parent, children are wonderful at reminding us that the world doesn't need to be so linear and gray. They are creative, and their emotions come without prejudice. What the series does a notably wonderful job of doing is showing how decompression, friendship, and visits to a simpler world can do wonders for our mental health and creativity. I genuinely appreciate the message of this anime, and the mind…

Barakamon is a show I never really expected to watch. It had been on my list for a while, but I never prioritized it—until today. I was just mindlessly scrolling through my 'planned to watch' list and thought, 'Why not?' And let me tell you, it was one of the best decisions I’ve made! The show isn’t flashy, and it doesn’t have a complicated plot, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. The way the events unfold is incredibly heartwarming, and the whole experience is just so wholesome. Plus, having nieces with similar behaviors made it even more relatable and added an extra layer of joy. I absolutely recommend giving it a watch!

This is a Great Anime. It's extremely wholesome. I wanted to write this so that others can get motivated to see it. It's extremely funny and can even make you feel emotional, which is hard to pull both off in the same show. You get a feeling of understanding and a connectedness between you and the mc with his feelings. The characters were a breath of fresh air because not only was everyone very down to earth, but they were all different to each other, not one character was a copy and paste of someone else in the show. I heavily recommend this if you want a chill wholesome comedy while also still getting a sense of connection to the anime and it's characters within.

Story: A person with artistic skills seeks nature to support him rather than luxury or materialistic support. This is already such a masterpiece. I had gave thoughts before trying but the truth is its one of those anime where a wholesome of life is giving hope! Characters: Obviously main lead sensei made such a cool role in it. Had got to know how men could handle kids in far pretty way at times than women. Also those kids, village people (island residents) and all the ones made such care alive. It never felt like an artistic show focused for artist. It is really awesome. I couldn't help when short series like these makes up a whole lot of musings :(: Episodes: they're slow paced yet onto the moment, funny, lovable, new to know and awesome at anyway.

Not gonna lie, this one caught me by surprise. For one am not a big fan of this kind of shows. While slice of life can be interesting it's usually not developed this good. Perhaps my emotional state was degraded and my enjoyment of this series can be partially attributed to that but nevertheless, if you look at my profile... slice of life shows I liked are few and far between. Everything here is great. Story is awesome and well paced, even though predictable. But we are not talking about mystery or some adventure type of show. For slice of life, being predictable is fine if you enjoy the story... and I did. On top of well told story stands a cast of well played and believable characters. Art style is great as well. Sound design is capable and doesn't stand out. Even though I have not a s…

A delightfully wonderful comedy, slice-of-life, and chill series about a twenty-three year old city boy going to live on a country-life island. Our main character, Seishuu Honda (often referred to as Sensei) is a struggling calligraphist trying to find himself and his own personal art style. He still has the maturity of a child, which is both unfortunate and fortunate for him. He acts on his impulse to punch a high-standing calligrapher judge in the face. Seishuu’s father sends him to live on Fukue Island for awhile to cool his head. It was fun to watch Seishuu grow as he met the kids on the Island and came to slowly open up and accept himself. The show was a wonderful mix of comedy to heartwarming, and gives a brief glimpse into life in semi-rural Japan. The pacing was nice and had some…

I watched this anime last year so don't remember everything clearly. But overall I was pleasantly surprised. The animation was decent and the characters were enjoyable to follow. The slice of life style of the anime made it particularly enjoyable to watch. I would definitely rate this 8 out of 10. While the animation was pretty good, it was enough to serve the story and the characters well. I found the characters to be particularly well developed and engaging, making it a joy to watch. The comedy and lightheartedness of the anime also made it an easy watch and I very much enjoyed it. All in all, this is a solid 8/10 and worth watching if you're looking for a lighthearted and enjoyable comedy slice of life anime.

Barakamon is a game changer when it comes to slice of life. It has everything that life needs; art, humor, nonsense, realities of careers, and generational interactions. The overall aesthetic is gorgeous not to mention, the main characters art process is quite beautiful especially as you see his talent unfold. The interactions between Seishuu and the children is probably the cutest thing I've ever seen. There are genuine sweet moments and moments that remind that kids are not as sweet as they appear. I love that the teens are just as inappropriate as teens should be. And the recognition that their influence on a small child is hilarious. It's a reminder to watch what you say around children! They hear and will repeat everything (and it's hilarious). The overall theme of art is what keeps…
