Blue Period

Blue Period

Introduction

Second-year high school student Yatora Yaguchi is a delinquent with excellent grades, but is unmotivated to find his true calling in life. Yatora spends his days working hard to maintain his academic standing while hanging out with his equally unambitious friends. However, beneath his carefree demeanor, Yatora does not enjoy either activity and wishes he could find something more fulfilling. While mulling over his predicament, Yatora finds himself staring at a vibrant landscape of Shibuya. Unable to express how he feels about the unusually breathtaking sight, he picks up a paintbrush, hoping his thoughts will be conveyed on canvas. After receiving praise for his work, the joy he feels sends him on a journey to enter the extremely competitive Tokyo University of the Arts—a school that only accepts one in every two hundred applicants. Facing talented peers, a lack of understanding of the fine arts, and struggles to obtain his parents’ approval, Yatora is confronted by much adversity. In the hopes of securing one of the five prestigious spots in his program of choice, Yatora must show that his inexperience does not define him. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Holy underrated peak. This anime deserves far more recognition than it gets. The character development is handled really well and never feels forced. Every major character grows naturally, and their progress feels earned rather than handed to them. What stood out the most to me was the protagonist's journey. The series doesn't just tell you that the MC works hard—it actually shows the effort, the setbacks, and the gradual results, making every achievement feel satisfying. This is an anime that will resonate with people who have a goal they're seriously working toward. If you've ever dedicated yourself to improving at something, this story is likely to hit the right spot. Don't come into this expecting romance. That's not what this anime is trying to be. Its focus is on passion, perseve…

Entertainment: 2/10 I found many episodes boring, or bland. There are some good moments but no comedy, so it's clear the main focus here is art and nothing else. That's why I think this anime is catered to a very specific audience. If you are passionate about art, or are someone who is interested on the meaning or themes of stories, you might like this anime. However, if you're just looking for another anime to watch, I highly discourage Blue Period. Themes: 8/10 I think the themes were well done, but the biggest problem here is Yatora, the main character. It's like the right message but wrong messenger. He constantly says that he has no talent and has to rely on his effort instead, while everyone else doesn't. Yet, this is his first time enrolling to take the exam to go into the art scho…

The thing I hate most about myself is this: I cannot finish what I start. My stories lie broken in the middle like paths swallowed by fog. I write until the pulse fades. Then silence. Then the quiet whisper that perhaps none of it was worth beginning. Then I watched Blue Period. For the first time in three months I opened Notion. I wrote nearly twenty pages. I cannot name what the anime did to me. Some feelings have no vocabulary. Only aftermath. My top ten anime have not changed in seven years. I have seen beautiful shows in that time. Brilliant ones. Shows that moved me. Yet none left a mark deep enough to rewrite that list. Blue Period broke the curse. I have never watched anything where the reach for art felt so personal. So sincere. So thoughtful. Many anime follow a talentless pro…

It’s not my strongest recommendation for sure, and for those who don’t enjoy a slower pace where the story isn’t driven by action it certainly isn’t for you. But if it does somewhat interest you I think it’s worth it to give it a watch, despite its flaws because there isn’t really another in the segment. It’s not life changing in any regard, but as an experience I think you would be better off having watched it than not, though it’s marginal. Despite being an anime about art, its actual art style is basic. That’s it, there’s no other descriptive word to use. However that doesn’t mean bad, just familiar. In the animation department it’s the same story. Characters in general are more interesting in their appearances than other shows who use this style though. Something I particularly liked…

In plain terms - Good story but bad animation, background score, voice acting, flat art etc. basically it could have been a 8-9 if they simply worked on the anime even 20% of what the mc worked on his art in the anime. There were some scenes where the conversations were so awkward that i doubted if it was just the anime studio at fault though. Also the side characters were there only to fuel mc or make him realize things. Even though some of them had interesting stories of their own they weren't explored. One thing I did like was that the story kept on moving. It didn't stay at one place for too long nor prolong unnecessary moments. Lastly it has a lot of internal monologues which I'm fine with but many may not like.

This anime's premise hooked me as in potrayed an unusual theme. but after finished the series, it felt like waste of time. The story and characters were solid but execution were horrible. There were absolutely no sense of time within the plot that confused the viewers. In early episodes, when the MC required to pass the try out after finding art, there were absolutely no context related to time pass. Multiplle episodes can be a few weeks within the show timeline, but instantly in 1 episodes they skipped over summer break completely. The cross-dresser friends arc have nothing to do with the plot whatsoever and just being there. It tried to capture a struggle an aspiring artist faced, but honestly there were no urgency or stakes whatsoever that make us rooting for an actually very well-wr…

Okay, here we go for the fifty-sixth time: Characters: -Main characters: Yatora is the only protagonist in this anime, and he is developed in such a way that his learning process is believable. He is an emotional boy who manages to understand himself through art, and the relationships he has formed along his artistic journey have supported him and taught him lessons, or rather, he has gained something from these relationships. I didn't expect to say this, but he is the protagonist this work needed to succeed. (7/7) -Secondary: All the characters are quite likable, but if we talk about support and usefulness to the plot, there are only about 3 or 4 that are really important in this anime compared to the rest, even though they are all good secondary characters. (2/3) Logic: Even from Yator…

There is just something... that really kept me watching. Staring, as if at a blank canvas. A story, that felt void in a sense, and yet was so captivating to the imagination. This is Blue Period. Perhaps one unknown regret would be not reading the manga instead of watching this anime, since I do enjoy drawing and creating art myself as a hobbyist. But either case, I was going to check out this anime eventually, and do not have the time to really flip pages for the time. And it is difficult to put into words how exactly this anime presents itself. And I say that, since there is a lot of introspection into this anime, and humanity at that. It does discuss some core aspects relating to art as well, albeit far less theory, and more so surface level. For instance, they would allude to the use…

Thought-provoking inner dialogues and an interesting story about defining oneself (as an artist) are completely overshadowed by poor direction, clonky animation, and a sub-plot (Ryuji’s relationship with their family), which, while interesting, never really fits within the overarching story. Side characters are all one-dimensional, except for Ryuji, who, again, is poorly integrated into the plot. If you don’t mind any of these, you’ll probably enjoy the series. But ultimately everything happening outside of the protagonist’s head is just poorly written. This would’ve probably been a 6 or 7 at least if the protagonist’s voice actor was as good as Kyon’s in the Haruhi series.

One of those shows which make you feel like picking up a new hobby. From this quite simple script arises an uplifting story that will leave you slightly sad it's over in only twelve episodes, but at the same time happy you to got to experience that much in the first place. It's not perfect. Certain elements could have been flashed out a bit better. Characters could have been a bit more rounded and with better depth and emotion. But overall it's an entertaining show about a guy who stumbles upon his passion, quite literally, for art and painting. There's not much to spoil since story is quite simple. It is, however, well worth the watch even though it will feel a bit too dramatic at moments and perhaps slightly lacking of a better ending. Barakamon is still a better experience, but the two…

I feel like blue period is not an anime for everyone. At least for me as an artist I enjoyed it a lot, I even came to identify with some parts, such as how stressful it is compared to other artists even when you are just starting to draw. In order not to make this long, I will divide this mini analysis into 3 parts: Characters, plot and music and animation. CHARACTERS: Yatora (protagonist): I think that with Yatora, if you are not an artist, or someone who wants to dedicate yourself to art, you would not be able to empathize, or identify much with the character. But if I'm sure of one thing, it's that Yatora's evolution, at least in the anime, is very marked. He always gave me the feeling that he is the type of character who says "if you want something, work for it." Ryuuji: I feel that…

(Spanish review below). I don't know how to begin to describe how much I loved Blue Period. The funny thing is that for years I thought I wouldn't like it. I don't know exactly why. I thought it would be about a simple art club, but it's so much more than that. The main reason I liked anime is because of the place art has in it. The themes that are addressed around art, how the characters experience art and why they chose it as a way of life. I was never good at visual art, but I enjoy it a lot and I like to learn as much as possible about what's behind the art pieces. In that sense, Blue Period gave me everything. I also really liked the technical parts and found them VERY interesting, although the relationship of the characters with their own art was the best of all. I really liked th…

This is a wonderful show about Yaguchi, a high school student, and the path he took after he discovered that he could convey his feelings and words on a canvas. It was a joy to watch the different emotions he had to go through towards the growth and improvement in the process of creating his art. The portrayal of all his struggles and joy throughout the show, the relationships between the MC and the rest of the cast, kept me entertained without a dull moment. I appreciate that the events in this show happened in a very realistic manner, thus making it easier for viewers to relate to. The art style was also very pleasing to the eyes. It has been an exhilarating experience watching this show.

In today’s world, it’s almost laughable to see a realistic manga dealing with anime. The current trend is dominated by isekai (otherworld) works, and pieces that demand thought from viewers have long since become nearly extinct, with the 2010s marking the end of such works. Yet, despite this, a realistic manga aimed at those still craving such content was released in Japan. At the perfect moment when realism was needed, the author astutely grasped the demand and delivered this work. Plot Summary: Every night, Yaguchi, a high school junior, drinks and smokes with his friends in Shibuya while watching soccer, only to faithfully attend school in the mornings. As he nears the end of his second year, it's time to choose a career path. One day, after realizing he left his cigarettes in the art…

The best art genre anime, period. I don't want to exaggerate but the information about art in this anime is so informative and astonishing. I love how Yatora chooses and discovers what he really wanted to do and his passion which is to draw/paint. He feels a deep love for art, especially when he's eager to learn, express himself more, and continue no matter what the outcomes are. I love also how the artwork is explained in a somewhat detailed way. I know that the artists going to love and relate to this because it also tackles the societal and passion perspective when it comes to art. What's more interesting is it also based on the students' life as an artist enrolling to a prestigious art university in Japan that shows the progress and other things. I also love the characters especia…

A somewhat melancholy show about the creation of art and why we do it, and the relationship other people have with art, its process, and other people. Some aspects of the show hit harder than others but I really enjoy it. One of the best aspects of the show is that the message of it is that anyone can make art, or anyone can follow their passion, as long as they stick at it. You're not born with some innate talent, with practice and guidance you can reach very very high. And that is quite heart-warming, I think. The other character's treatment of Ryuji is sweet as well. They have good friends and a support circle, especially with granny. Slay, queen

What kind of audience does Blue Period appeal to : I am not an art person. I couldn't understand art thus people's love for it. Yet after watching Blue Period, although it may be seemed delusional to say the least, I finally am able to at least apprecaite art. This is what Blue Period is about, a teenager discovering himself and hoping there're others who'd truely understand his burning passion for art. Therefore, Blue Period is a "deep" anime suitable for people who'd gain enjoyment from contemplating what the story is trying to deliver. Even if you're not an art person like me, perhaps after watching this anime, you'd also get a new understanding about "art". Why I give the score 9/10 : · Story Telling Not to be confused with "story", the story "telling" is what I find impressive about…

the usual story of finding what you love and working hard for it, a premise that even though over used in a ton of animes, works, and thats why this is a fairly decent anime the story is nothing from the other world, and the art i cannot say anything because i dont know that much about art (the designs are decent) but from what i have learnt from all the people i know that are artist, its kinda realistic also without falling in spoilers it is kinda realistic on life on some points and charachters wich will make some weebs foam at their mouth tho and since my review wont be relevant to many people and star system tend to be shitty i will just say that if you have time to watch some random anime, choose this one, you dont have to make time for this but as soon you got free time give it a wat…

💙✨ I had high hopes for this show, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. The first episode showed promise, but the excitement quickly fizzled out. The plot was as dull as a rainy day, and the characters were about as interesting as a plain bowl of oatmeal. Especially the main character - he was as bland as plain white rice! The blonde girl was much more intriguing. 💙✨ The story didn't have anything new or exciting. It felt like watching paint dry. I wouldn't recommend this show if you're looking for something thrilling. It's like eating the same boring cereal every day. Boring/10
