Josee, the Tiger and the Fish

Josee, the Tiger and the Fish

Introduction

Equipped with his passion for diving and admiration for marine biology, university student Tsuneo Suzukawa tries his best to juggle several part-time jobs to earn enough money to study abroad. But one night, in a fateful accident, he meets a girl in a wheelchair, driving his current path into a detour. The girl, Kumiko—who prefers to be called "Josee"—initially comes off as rude. Tsuneo, however, is then convinced by Josee's grandmother to take on the paid job to be Josee's caretaker. Despite being annoyed with her bossy demeanor, Tsuneo sees the opportunity to save more funds to support his academic dream. Nonetheless, after putting up with Josee's behavior for some time, Tsuneo tries to quit, only to discover Josee's dreams of traversing the outside world—to experience a life free from her crippling condition. Changing his mind, Tsuneo decides to accompany Josee in exploring the wonders that the world has to offer. Through their time together, the two begin to realize that the traits that bind them may be vital toward fulfilling their respective aspirations. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

It's a movie that certainly has all it needs to be popular: great visuals, memorable soundtracks (especially the Eve songs, I love them!) and a cast of likeable characters that make you feel like you're alongside them, sharing the same pains and joys together. And perhaps the most importantly, a duo of main characters you can't help but root for not only romantically, which I must add I did not particularly care for, but also as people who are striding through life with struggles of their own. Grand depictions of nature as it is and how small we humans are in comparison, be it through the eyes of Tsuneo as he dives deep into the embrace of the ocean, or be through the main question this movie constantly asks us at any given moment, whether or not we are prepared to fight for our dreams,…

A friend of mine recommended this overrated shitshow of a movie to me, giving me straight BS about how sentimental, touching, and wholesome it is. Now that I’ve actually wasted 90 minutes of my life watching it, I felt compelled to write a brief review of it. I get that it’s hard to convey a deep, touching story within the timespan of just an hour and a half. But they did NOT do a good job AT ALL with the scenario. The relationship between the MC and his love interest seemed superficial and uninteresting to me. It felt more like a codependent relationship where the MC constantly looks after the disabled girl, and she occasionally makes subtle amorous advances to keep him around, rather than an actual romantic rapport. The upbringing of the MC itself seemed childish and weird. He apparentl…

A very beautiful story that captures the very essence of what it is to yearn, first for the dreams of one's life, then second for one to share that life with. Josee was such a fascinating and sympathetic character. Her initial defensiveness and rudeness feels so nuanced when viewed through the lense of her insecurities and fears. Watching her develop and grow was not just satisfying but deeply earned emotionally. She is the heart and soul of this movie even though the rest of the cast was enjoyable too. This movie deserves a whole-hearted recommendation. A single word to describe it would truly have to be, beautiful.

The story and moral was good, but the character development wasn't all that smooth. I watched it and the art style was good. It was very captivating. I liked the characters, and they had me hooked. I just feel that mc and Josee relationship was rushed and was not that smooth, and some point i couldnt really understand the ''emotional scene'' because it had no build up and was unexpected. There was this scene where mc and Josee went to mc's work place and Josee left because she was mad, I had to pause and think because it was unexpected and random and eventually got the grasp of it. The feelings in this show weren't shown that well and would be nice if the characters personality and emotions were shown better (Josee was blushing to random people so it was quite hard). If it wasn't for the…

Amazing movie, amazing visuals, really good story (in my opinion anyway i know a lot of the other reviews say its mediocre but i at least i thought it was good anyway), great climax and great low lights along with other amazing scenes throuought. However i did feel like some of the other characters were useless to a lot of the story and were quite shallow and merely there for plot convenience and not much more, however its fine because it is a movie after all and it would draw focus away from the main characters in the limited time there already was. Also their would have been something i think we all would have wanted to see in the credit or post credit scene but i wont mention what to keep this spoiler free. So apart from those small critiques and even with them 10/10 would recommend.

--- NO spoilers --- The movie is quite cliché in many ways, but it does these clichés so well that I'm not annoyed at all. Everything in the movie is either symbolic or has a bigger meaning; nothing is meaningless. Pay attention while watching, because it'll must likely be referenced later on. If you like romance stories this will be right up your ally. If you enjoyed "A Silent Voice" you'll love this story as well, not nearly as depressing, but just as hopefull. The characters, as said, are quite cliché, and I would like for them to be more utilised, but it's a movie not a series. The motivations behind each character makes sense, and they develop over time. Especially Josee. As a character she develops the most during the movies duration. Great movie loved it. Highly recommended.

Easily the best romance anime I’ve seen so far, and honestly one of the best romance stories I’ve experienced in general. The first thing that stands out is how well written the characters are. Not just the main two, but even the side characters feel like they genuinely belong in the story rather than just existing just to fill space. Everyone has a role that supports the development of the main relationship. At first glance, the story seems like a fairly typical romance setup: a boy and a girl start off on bad terms, the girl wants nothing to do with him, and over time they slowly grow closer. It’s definitely a familiar structure, and in many ways the story is predictable, but in this case, that’s not a flaw. What makes it so special is how that relationship develops. Tsuneo doesn’t win J…

((Review: English - Español)) ** English= This is a fast-paced drama and romance about self-improvement. It follows a young disabled girl, her overprotective grandmother, and a young man determined to give her the freedom she longs for. The movie gets right to the point—don't expect deep character development or an extensive backstory—but it definitely delivers on its premise. If you’re looking for a quick watch filled with drama, romance, and an uplifting message, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it.

Really, really cute movie. Depicts a kind of love that's more emotional and focused on enjoying all the small parts of life alongside the person you love. In my opinion the best kind of love that not so many people can feel, and this movie presents it really well. Great music, beautiful animation, good and realistic dialogue. Great characters, epecially the main lead. Story is not extremly original but it's much better than a western romcom movie. Only downside would be some small inconcistencies in the pacing/ speed of the scenes. Overall 10/10. Wish there were more anime movies like this one.

How is Josee to Tora to Sakana Tachi a phenomenal film? Josee to Tora to Sakana Tachi is based on a book of the same name. This film tells the story of Tsundeo, a young man who works in a diving shop. One day, he encounters Josee, a girl in a wheelchair, in danger. He saves her. Josee's grandmother hires Tsundeo to work at her house as a caregiver, and they begin to grow closer, until Josee develops feelings for Tsundeo. But why is this film so phenomenal to you? I'll tell you now: first, the film's story is simply beautiful, as it was very well constructed from the beginning. The protagonist is a guy full of dreams, and I like a protagonist with well-developed goals. The main heroine is a character you quickly warm to, because she had a really cool background, a really cool backstory,…

While it isn't a particularly memorable anime, it does what it does very well. At its core it's a cute movie about a disabled girl with a diminished self-worth and a boy who is always working hard toward his dreams while being overly optimistic. It's an anime that tries to portray the difference in perspective from able-bodied and disabled people while also trying to drive home how quickly that perspective can shift for either party. There is some amount of character development but it's not something you'd write home about, none of the characters are inherently "broken" in any case. So yeah all in all it's a nice feel good movie. If you want a happy afternoon go for it, but it won't leave you feeling satisfied if you want something to leave you mesmerised or questioning your own choices…

I don't think I was prepared for how much Josee, the Tiger and the Fish would completely steal my heart. From the very beginning, there's something so warm and intimate about the story. It doesn't rely on grand gestures or dramatic twists to make you care. It just slowly pulls you into the lives of its characters, and before you realize it, you're emotionally invested in every dream, every setback, and every small victory they experience together. What I loved most is the relationship between the two leads. Their connection feels natural, messy, and deeply human. They don't magically solve each other's problems. They challenge each other, support each other, and help each other grow in ways that feel authentic. Watching them slowly become such an important part of each other's lives was ho…

Great movie, and definitely recommend you watch it. The story is in my opinion good, with a lot of things that could catch your interest. So was the animation, too. It looked really good, smooth, and very enjoyable to watch. Though, I'd wish some of the side characters got more story and background, as it makes some moments a bit "meh"? Also, I'd wish there was more story before anything really happened, as it would make the bond between the viewer and characters deeper. Making the few heavy hitting moments better. Besides that, maybe if it was a series, it would turn out better, as there would be time for both the points mentioned above. But still, a great watch, enjoyed it a lot.

absolute cinema ive got nothing else to say(okay may be a bit more) as a man i cried (not saying that a man isnt allowed to cry) if you like romance i absolutly recommend it its got fellings emotion and its realy touching its realy focused on the 2 main carracters and even in less than half the time of an anime series (1h38 / 20m (~the time of one ep) = 4.9 eps.) it tells us a story not a fairy tale and a butifull one at that (not all good not all bad) -> (what happens) and for the french like me its got vf and hell if its got vf its probably got ur language too now if youve read that far into my not so well made review ive got one last thing to say sit back relax and dont forget the popcorn ;)

Overall great and unique movie. The story gives important messages of how miraculous an encounter with the person who's tied with red string on your pinky can be. Also, to certain whom that read this; the fact that you can stand on your feet without problem means that you could go everywhere you want! Don't forget to exercise the wings inside your heart. The art and the storytelling are also very good to you who's looking for a short, but special anime to watch! Beside the main characters, the side characters in the story are packed enough and functioning, having their role in the story.

The art in this anime? Straight-up beautiful, man. It made me feel warm and comfortable, like I was just chillin’ in a safe space. I really liked how it looked — soft, clean, and full of emotion. What really got me though... was the story. No powers, no magic, — just real human stuff. And that’s what made it a masterpiece for me. The way it was told, the emotions, the struggles... it all felt real. Like, I actually connected with the characters in a way I haven’t with any other anime. Josee's journey, the way her world changed, and how Tsuneo played a part in it — all of it touched my heart. It’s a simple story, but damn, it hit me hard. This anime proves you don’t need wild action to make something unforgettable. I 10000000000% recommend it to anyone who wants to feel something real. N…

This might be the nicest movie I’ve ever watched. It’s not necessarily the kind of story that stays with you for years (looking at you, Kimi no Na wa), but there’s something about it that really stood out. The plot isn’t unique per se. It follows a familiar romance/drama setup, with moments you might see coming. Still, it’s one of the most moving portrayals of human emotion I’ve ever seen. It feels incredibly genuine in a way that’s rare. It kind of makes you feel good about the world. The characters are charming and enjoyable to watch, the music is nice, and the movie is generally beautiful.

Josee to Tora to Sakana-tachi is an extremely underwhelming experience. The uninspiring narrative, plain characters, and absolute spam of clichés all culminate in sheer mundanity. After 90 minutes of watching absolutely nothing happen, the movie ends in an incredibly abrupt manner—just to really drive home the fact that it completely wasted the viewer's time. Plot-wise, it's predictable enough to make you feel like a prophet, while simultaneously managing to get you as emotionally attached to the story as Buddha is to worldly desires. I usually praise shows when the dialogue feels realistic, but in this movie, the trick to its realism is sheer awkwardness—not in an entertaining way, but in an... odd way. If I wanted to watch people feeling awkward, I'd just go make small talk with a gas s…

Beautiful movie with a heartwarming tale that was a well executed push and pull on the emotions, both to the plot and the charming cast. An experience that asks very little of the viewer and does a great job not trying to forcefully pull tears out of you. Unlike a lot of movies in this sub-genre of drama and realism. It was soft, but powerfully emotional, and was "real" most of all. Often times, "romance" in anime means exuberant showcases of adolescent emotions, to the point of feeling like their only purpose is to fulfill some lost experiences in the writer or viewer. This movie is not that.

Honestly I didn't like it, I thought when I was half way through the movie I was going to get caught up in the story and they just made me angry with what happened to Tsuneo. Personally I hate characters with “tsundere” personalities and I really tried to empathize with the main character, but I failed, I hated her until I saw that there were changes in her, I think the only character I liked was Tsuneo's friend, he was the only one that never made me angry and I liked that he proved to be a good friend despite his questionable personality. Despite hating the characters, I must admit that Bones never disappoints me in terms of character design and drawing style.
