Going into this show, I expected it to be a well-animated but otherwise fairly standard romance visual novel adaptation, with girls that behave more like tropes than people and a wet noodle of a protagonist; I am very happy to say that Kanon absolutely blew my expectations put of the water! The show is well-animated as expected (KyoAni, so no surprise there), but the girls...while odd, they do act more grounded than I had imagined. But more than the girls, by far the best aspect to me is actually the protagonist, Yuuichi: I don't recall the last time I have seen a more accurate depiction of an older brother in anime (like, an ACTUAL older brother, not the "onii-chan I got stuck in the washing machine uwu" nonsense that's normally depicted). He's out the gate with teasing these girls, imme…

Are YOU looking to watch an anime with a banger of an opening theme? Are YOU looking to watch an anime that makes you feel nostalgic about winter, especially from the early 2000s? Are YOU looking to watch an anime that will make you laugh, shocked, and even bawl your eyes out... ALLL in the same episode at times? Most of all, would you like to watch an anime that once you've finished, you would definitely rewatch it when the opportunity arises? Well look no further, Kanon should be next on your list! I would highly recommend it to those who are looking for an anime that is so engaging that it makes you even question about life at times. I got attached to all the characters to the point I felt like I was even in the show at times. To be honest, maybe my heart is in such bad shape becaus…

The first few episodes of Kanon are interesting at first because of the quiet mood and sense of mystery. That interest doesn’t last very long. As the series moves forward, the repeated arc structure becomes obvious, and the emotional impact starts to weaken. Each new storyline introduces another girl with a tragic past, but the show rarely gives the audience enough time to form a real attachment before moving on. The emotional writing is inconsistent. Because of this inconsistency, it is hard to feel truly connected before the story moves on to the next character. The Makoto arc works because it slowly builds connection before taking it away. The later arcs rely on sadness rather than development, which makes the emotional moments feel forced instead of natural. Feeling bad for a characte…

The first time watching this I thought it was going to be boring but it was very fun and sad to watch Many unique characters and they made Yuichi not a self insert anymore! Yuichi is one of my favorite characters The story is also so fun to watch and it made me shocked at the end! This story might have 24 episodes but they nicely wrap up the story and it made me want more. I wanted to play vn after this! I can’t wait to play the vn. I just wish people payed more attention to Kanon. I also wish they make a second season where Yuichi picks a different girl in the vn.

It is legitimately unbelievable to me that there is actually a visual novel adaptation that's as close to perfection as it can be... I come back from reading the VN and let me tell you, the level of detail and care that was put into this adaptation is close to nothing else that exists in this medium. Incredible how they not only flawlessly combined every single route and paced through them seamlessly, but they also paid attention to including every single soundtrack and CG from the VN...AND IF THAT WASN'T ENOUGH, they even expanded upon various key scenes and moments and provided meaningful additions to the original material, all the while perfectly staying true to the spirit, vibes and personalities of the VN's setting, themes and characters. None of the little changes they made feels fo…

One day i decided i wanted to watch sad anime and many people and places recommended Kanon as a very sad anime, and some in fact put it like in top 5, and i delayed it for a while since i was on a sad spree and after few months i finally decided to give it a try... AND O BOY WAS A SURPRISED...... in a negative way sadly I have no idea how most of it is supposed to be sad when you get random characters thrown in with no background info or anything just the basic oh they were in the childhood but he remembers nothing so yea have fun ! That made me not to connect with them and they didnt do any better job trhought the whole anime. Honestly no idea how this can be even close to top 5 saddest anime when the main thing thats supposed to be doing is the kinda the worst thing in this whole anim…

If I had to describe this show in a phrase, it'd be "Moeblob Torture Porn: Season's Beatings" Because yeah... However, I quite enjoyed it. It's got the trappings of a VN adaptation that presumably runs through each individual route but that works if your arcs are strong, at least for me. And I thought most of them worked... most of them. But before I go a bit more into that, let me discuss it as a general show. I thought it nailed the feeling of a late 90s/early 2000s romantic VN, if that makes sense? It just gave off a really good vibe, which gave me a good mindset to watch the show in. The music was really good, usually, shows have "serviceable" music where like it might be good or even great but it's kind of in the background for me but Kanon had music that I was like "wow, that's…

Oh, Kanon. I watched the 2006 version of this anime back when it first aired and got fansubs, and while I did get a majority of the DVDs, I never managed to finish the English dub beyond the first few episodes due to other obligations. I wasn't sure if I'd ever go back to Kanon, even though I liked it. But due to...recent events involving the original visual novel, I decided it was high time I stopped putting it off and rewatch it. I wondered if my feelings for Kanon would change in the decades since I first watched it. I liked it back when I was younger, and rewatching it now as an adult...surprisingly, I still like it, even if I find other shows that came later to be better. The original visual novel from 1999 was Key's first solo foray into the eroge business after they split from Tacti…

I never thought an anime would come close in rivaling Clannad for me, in terms of pure character drama and emotional value, but Kanon managed to do that. I'm man enough to admit this got me more than twice, which is a feat that only four other anime can claim, Your Lie in April, Anohana, Clannad AS, and Assassination Classroom. Media that can make the viewer emote along with the characters is no easy task, and this series managed to rope me in this time. The way the story is weaved together I love, while I absolutely love Clannad, I will admit I would have liked to see bit more continuity, and while yes I know it is adapted from a visual novel with different paths so it would be hard to do such a thing, Kanon is adapted from a Visual Novel as well and does it perfectly, every single thing…

Overview: Kyoto Animation may be a studio that's been around since the mid-80's, but they didn't start actually making anime until the 2000s. While their two "Full Metal Panic" seasons "Fumoffu!" and "The Second Raid" are what got them noticed, they truly came into their own with their take on the Key visual novel "Kanon", which despite being one of two versions of the story is by far the most well-known one, and for very good reasons. To put it simply, "Kanon" is a very touching tale about the pain of loneliness and the importance of past connections and will likely make you tear up at least a little bit. Story (8/10): The series is set during winter in what appears to be the north of Japan, in a city that's covered in snow even on the best of days. Yuichi Aizawa, a snarky, cynical, snow…

Forgotten memories and a whole lot of tragedy. I'm really unsure what to make of Kanon. While watching I was never bored, as a matter of fact I was very invested in the story (at least past episode 10, the first 10 episodes are very slow). It isn't quite the tear jerker that some make it out to be and like some of the bad reviews have said it tries to emotionally manipulate the viewer almost exactly like some of the other works by Key. But I can't deny that Kanon brings a heartwarming, melancholy feeling that can really put one at ease. Kanon isn't a much watch, for most watching Clannad would be the better choice and could just leave Kanon alone. But for those who are willing to to get lost in a story, even if its not perfect. There is something here that is worth seeing.

tl;dr: An anime with some incredibly emotional moments, but that overall isn’t very good at balancing the bitter and sweet elements. Kanon is a KyoAni adaptation of a visual novel by Key, and though not as highly regarded as the similarly produced Clannad, it is still generally viewed in high esteem. Clannad was one of the first anime I saw and one that probably had a major impact on how I became such a major anime and visual novel fan. Despite that, I had never actually seen Kanon, so I decided better late than never and finally decided to watch it. The anime involves the high school aged protagonist, Aizawa Yuuichi, returning to a city that he used to visit as a child before abruptly stopping at some point, though he doesn’t seem to remember why, nor does he really have any memories at…

This was an uneven series. I gave up on the 2002 version after a few episodes because the characters didn't grab me and nothing interesting was happening. The 2006 version likewise starts with several episodes where nothing of note happens, but I've enjoyed enough KyoAni shows to persist and give it the benefit of the doubt. Unlike Clannad, which quickly started focusing on the arcs of each girl in turn, Kanon gets stuck in an interminable holding pattern where the protagonist spends one or two inconsequential scenes with each girl every episode. These are often near-identical scenes each time that only exist to remind us that all of these girls exist. It barely counts as slice-of-life when we're just seeing the same slice over and over. Thankfully it's made more watchable than that part o…

Far be it from me to question the decision to do another anime adaption of the same visual novel just 4 years after the first time they did it. It's understandable, Toei did an alright job adapting the story but the characters were just so ugly looking and visually the show was just painful to watch. This does a great job bringing the original visual novel's art style to the medium of animation in a way that doesn't make my eyes bleed. Character's face proportions now look more like faces and less like eyes with noses hanging in-between them. So all around a lot of improvements in that department. Where it fails I think is in it's run-time. It takes twice as many episodes to tell the same story, and while some might prefer a slower pace for this kind of story to allow room for plot points…

The term "atmosphere" can often feel a bit broad or vague when describing something, but I feel entirely comfortable associating this term with Kanon 2006. Something about the vastness of the snow, the bloom and light overlay effects, and that distinct KEY fantasy surrealism, all meshed together to form an atmosphere that enveloped my senses when I watched this years ago, and continues to linger in my memory. I often judge an anime by its OP, and Kanon 2006's OP is best representative of the alluring atmosphere of the show. It's one of my favs. I think the closest experience I have had, equivalent to that of watching Kanon 2006, was this one time I came down with a 107 degree fever as a kid. I was bedridden in a cabin on a snowy mountain trip, and had a pretty sublime (literal) fever d…

Much like the snowfall that permeates the town, in their 2006 adaptation of Kanon, Kyoto Animation managed to masterfully blanket an otherwise ordinary story with a thick coat of atmosphere, successfully elevating its predictable plot and the shortcomings of the 2001 series into an engrossing drama. It's not as sad and won't leave you with the same lasting impression as Key's later story, Clannad, but what you get here is a story with a lot of heart, simple yet likable characters set in a serene snow-swept city that will hook you into clicking the next episode button. Story (6) - Both predictable and bizarre at the same time. The central plot point of the main character, Yuichi, having no recollection of his past gives the show an almost unsettling vibe and keeps you watching. Just be awa…

I actually had a struggle whether to rate 9 or 10. Enjoyment:If it is the anime alone, probably 9.5, but including the visual novel as a series is 10. Story and Character: In the visual novel, the story goes different character routes, every route is main in the game, the anime kind of combines all of them and makes it a main route and other sub routes. So in the story part, the anime does a pretty job of adapting every route except one or two. Not perfect, but still fantastic. As the story progresses, you will start to really love the characters, they are all lovable and memorable. Art and Sound:These two parts are really just god tier to me. The winter scenes, environment, atmosphere, visuals, lights, op and ed, bgm, are just beautiful. Overall: I love this series, it is one of my al…

The town that hosted the young boy's future. (May contain spoilers.) In 1999, Kanon's release marked the begining of a beautiful story in the history of visual novels; one that would inspire that company's future and would also inspire the hearts of many. After AIR having a huge success, KEY wanted to see their first project have a new light after the 2002 anime which was probably outdated by 2006. The 2002 adaptation wanted to recreate the visual novel's story. The 2006 adaptation inovated the story. One boy, by the name of Aizawa Yuuichi, returns to the town that he made plenty of memories with 7 years later. However, he can't remember anything that happened throught that time. Meeting the new people(specially girls) in town, Yuuichi would embarck on a journey to remember those lost ti…

"A Kanon is a kind of song where the melody keeps repeating, with each repetition the song grows more and more beautiful and vibrant wich each other. Wouldn't it be great if the progression of life would be the same als the progression of this song? Nothing would seem to change but everything would seem to get richer." - Sayuri Kurata, episode 14 Well that explains the name. This anime is REALLY Clannad-like, since it's in the same artstyle, from the same people and even has the same VA's. (There is a character that's basically Sunohara from Clannad with the same voice actor in the DUB). This anime is a weird one, and I'm really lost in the episodes after the first half of the season. The Mai arc shifts the theme of the show drastically where I said WTF out loud multiple times, altought…

* zero spoiler * but at the end of my review a MAXI spoil + my personal alternative ending ... ( sorry, English isn't my first language, I tried my best ) Kanon notation first part solid 8 and then fall fall fall end with a 3 ... Kanon is the perfect exemple of a good pitch who could become very good anime. BUT, BUT, BUT it's an incompatible mix of styles with an over use of easiest trick to create emotions and what to say about this ending coming from nowhere ... the ending really kill the anime story because it's just an absurd episode , ruins the drama as if the author was forced to make a fan service episode . I don't regret watching Kanon. LIke for many anime, I wish I could give 2 notations on animelist : one for the first part and one for the second. I'would give 8 and 2 to seco…
