I want to start this off by saying that if you dropped this anime very early on, give it another chance; give it at least halfway. I understand that people think the jokes are overplayed and stuff, but man, you will not get anything if you watch this show for only a few episodes; you need to watch way more to actually understand it. I only say this because i came into this show wanting to drop it, i thought it was stupid, mermaids, the main character, everything, but there was a sudden shift that happen. i watched seto no hanayome when i was around 11 years old. i thought that it was the funniest thing ive ever seen. i come back to it probably once a year for a full rewatch and its still the funniest anime ive ever seen. its a genuine 10 based on how much it makes me laugh each time I watch it, i love the over the top characters and how stupid the show is in general. if you enjoy stupid characters and even stupider situations then you will love this. it will probably be in my top 10 anime for the rest of my life …

I must admit, I saw this anime when I was almost Nagasumi's age, and believe me, I didn't understand it, I got bored, now what's good? The anime is about Nagasumi who, during a summer vacation, went to his paternal hometown (near the sea) and met a mermaid named San, and he accidentally saw a mermaid so he married her. Also there is a code about mermaids never being found out by humans so reason reason reason they are engaged now and she's moved in. So the exact set up of " Urusei Yatsura" only more romantic and less fanservicy.
The rest of show is a mix of romance & comedy as everyone is in love with either the MC or the mermaid and trying to win them over while the couple stay glued together.
While the original show and manga were fine they were the definition of mid. Something that doesn't really leave a mark and lacks it's own sense of style. As mentioned the show pulls ALOT from Urusei Yatsura but without the bite that one had coming off as the diet version.

Seto no Hanayome is a parody cum romcom cum harem. I watched this anime over a decade ago and recently decided to rewatch it. I remember enjoying it back in the day. Is it still worth watching?
The long and short is maybe.
It started when Nagasumi nearly drowned on Seto Island. A mermaid, Sun, decided to save him. But under mermaid rules, she has to die because being seen by humans in mermaid form is unforgivable. Nagasumi also has to die.
The alternative is for Nagasumi to marry Sun. Nagasumi decided to take this option, and the rest was one hilarious ride.

Watching Seto no Hanayome was quite the experience. The humor didn't quite resonate with me overall, as the show heavily relies on comedy. While there was one episode that had me in stitches, most fell flat, and some were downright dreadful. The characters also left much to be desired, with many being simplistic comedic archetypes. The female lead is passable, and a few side characters manage to stand out, but the male lead often comes across as rather weak. However, I've seen worse, and he does have his moments of brilliance. Romance is a significant aspect, though it's just average. While there are better romantic narratives out there, this one manages to exceed expectations slightly. Believe it or not, this anime is actually hilarious. Not because it is a train wreck - it is legitimately funny to the point it makes you laugh out loud.
Seto no Hanayome starts off somewhat bland. There are some good moments early on, but the setting - while being quite ridiculous in its premise - does not sell itself. However new characters keep getting introduced progressively. And with each new addition to its cast Seto no Hanayome reaches one new height after another.

I want to warn some people because people might have wrong expectations. In general I like this type of comedy but still it was one of the worst I ever seen because of main character and his family. Main problem? There is huge focus on suffering without enough mitigation measures. Main hero want but can't escape from hardcore bullying and in general suffering that grows and at some point push him to think about suicide which actually wouldn't be so unreasonable in such situation... In most comedies in such circumstances at least main hero is just immune or almost immune to pain or at least have some escape (just something), but in this anime hero have half baked immunity and sometimes try to be serious which makes everything harder to swallow as comedy. 7/10 for me, it's not bad but not that great. I've watched a lot of animes all ready, if you click my profile it'd show you (400+ animes and 8k+ episodes; not including manga (around 50+ I think), hentai (40+ probably), hentai doujins (I'm definitely sure it's around 200), and some manhua/manwha (20+)). As far as rating animes, I'm pretty confident on it. So why write a review now? No particular reason :). There was one moment I vividly remember from this show that nearly had me crying from how hard I was laughing. It was that one moment that kept me painfully crawling towards the final episode, only to be left disappointed.
The premise is interesting enough. The characters aren't great, but you don't always need great characters for an enjoyable piece of entertainment (I am much more forgiving of this in comedy shows in particular). Save that one joke that beautifully stuck the landing, I just did not have the same sense of humor as the writers did. One particular gag (that unfortunately recurred throughout the show) regarding the poor MC's dad left me disgusted, and the remainder of the jokes were forgettable.

My first experience with Seto no Hanayome was at a friend's house, and back then I watched only the first episode and thought nothing more of the show, being a high school harem romcom, a genre that I am generally averse to. Half a decade later I decided to revisit the series with a different perspective after watching and liking the director's other shows, Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita and Asobi Asobase (being a recent fan of the Yakuza games helped too) ,and, ho boy, have I overlooked this gem of a show.

I remember watching this on Netflix as a child and not understanding any of the jokes. Then I invited my mom to watch it with me, and was no longer allowed on adult Netflix. I don't remember what happened in the story aside from a few basic pieces, like the mermaids "training" and the whole marriage thing, but the absurdity of that memory puts it in a special place in my heart.
so... yeah. I can't fairly review the anime without watching it again (which I may do in the future), but I do remember enjoying it. :)

Seriously I just finished watching it for the 3rd time and I've come to the conclusion that this anime is perhaps the most underrated anime of all time. Not only does the current 7.88 score on mal confuse the heck out of me, it also makes me disappointed that some people may see that score and be turned away by it, although it's not "low", it doesn't do this anime justice. This anime is among the best, among the big boys and definitely a classic that has stood the test of time, I watched this is 2018, it came out in 2007, and I somehow felt like I'm seeing something new and refreshing, absolute fantastic masterpiece that would guarantee you a great time, I'll tell you why.
It proves that you really can't judge a book by its cover, or review on MAL.

Seto no Hayanome is one of the most funniest I have watch till date. This anime made me laugh a lot, with their nonsense comedy. While watching this anime you will not know whats going to happen next, is quite unpredictable.
The story is about a weird couple, between a human and a mermaid, who is also daughter of a Yakuza (japanese mafia), and the anime tells us their story, the story about their relantionship. I don't want to say too much because I don't want to spoil it, but I will say that Seto no Hayanome has to be in your must watch list, it's truly worth to watch.
I personally like it a lot, and it's one of my favourite animes of the genre of comedy.
