Introduction

In the early 20th century, the discovery of the substance Cavorite allowed the production of advanced military technology and steered the country toward conflict. A group of girls from the prestigious Queen's Mayfaire school work as undercover spies for the Commonwealth. Led by Dorothy, an experienced driver with a striking personality, their group includes the talents of Ange le Carré, a cold-blooded liar and expert sharpshooter; Chise, a proficient samurai; and Beatrice, a voice-mimicking specialist. In the shadow of the war, they have only one goal in mind: completing their mission. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

So I saw a gun in the cover and decided I was going to watch it. I also saw that it was an anime original which means it has potential of being good since most anime original's I watch have ended up being good. Anyways, the show was pretty rough in the beginning because of how the story was executed. It also doesn't explain a lot of things properly so it makes it harder to watch in the beginning. Aside from the major issues, the show as a whole is pretty decent as of the 1st season. WATCH IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER Another decent show ruined by pointlessly arbitrary rearrangement of its simple chronological episodes into an arbitrary release order for achronological storytelling that ruins the narrative in multiple ways(loss of suspense due to spoiling characters and adding inherent plot armor, a main antagonist popping in for 1 episode way earlier than she should only to reappear at the end, random meaningless characters doing random things with no emotional weight only for their backstory to be given in now equally spoiled flashback) for absolutely no benefit. These artsy slop directors and corporate asshats just love to stick their fingers in a pie to satisfy their own narcissism without any understanding. Peach Boy Riverside flashbacks for days. Other than that the s…

Overview: Back in the 2000s, the 'girls with guns' anime genre was popularized by a trio of similar but unrelated anime ("Noir", "Madlax" and "El Cazador de la Bruja"), and while the anime themselves have faded into obscurity, the genre itself remains popular to this day. "Princess Principal", a 2017 anime about teenage girls who moonlight as spies, feels in many ways like a successor to that trilogy of anime, keeping their strengths while also fixing their weaknesses, and while not without issues of its own, the end result is a unique, complex, exciting and highly entertaining series that should appeal to anyone who likes anime with strong female characters. Story (7.5/10): The setting for "Princess Principal" is Albion, an steampunk alternate version of early 20th century England that,…

Even though the ending was a bit disappointing, overall, from the very beginning, this anime excited me with its well-balanced writing and beautiful visuals. I generally prefer a style of storytelling that uses dialogue that 'doesn't underestimate the audience'—meaning it doesn't over-explain to the point where it treats the viewer as unintelligent—but instead focuses on showing us things with a 'less is more' approach. This is the crucial part that made me like this show. While a few points might have seemed slightly illogical, they were understandable for the sake of simplicity, because if some parts were too verbose, the main point the show wanted to convey wouldn't be achieved. Although the character design wasn't particularly outstanding, it wasn't neglected either. The most regre…

Imma keep this straight and short. This anime is super underrated, I mean the genre of Steampunk itself is on the lower end of Sci-Fi genres. I found this anime of the fact that it was yet another piece of work from Okouchi and When I saw how it was a spy/steampunk with girls I thought it would be some simple and nice story but boy did it blow past my expectations. Princess Principal is a episodic spy steampunk with non linear story structure that is brilliantly executed in its core. Each episode is a new mission and new plotline while still undergoing with one main storyline in the background and you never forget that which is a good thing because sometimes with episodic shows, it tends to lose its value and purpose through such issues. It also helps of how well paced the story is espe…

This anime is literally a dream come true for my childhood self. I've been searching for a spy anime, and this just happened to be perfect. The ART. I love it. I'd see all those game openings with this cute art style and wish for an anime with it. There is a pretty obvious use of CGI and 2D blend in one scene that I don't think looks right, but all the 2D animations are beautiful. The characters. Our main character, Ange is exactly what my 9 year old self wanted in a female protagonist. She's trained as a spy, calm and collected during missions, and great at acting. All the boxes checked. The other characters also have very distinct personalities with backstories woven well into each of their missions. The story telling is really something else. Even the background characters become rat…

Among the most underrated works I've had the chance to watch! In just 12 episodes, Princess Principal takes us through a wide range of emotions. An incredible universe in a Steampunk style that, in my opinion, is more than noteworthy. The Steampunk genre is severely underrepresented in anime, with a few "references" in other works like "Violet Evergarden," but those works aren't entirely set in a Steampunk world. Princess Principal has managed to seamlessly blend its story with this genre! A very rich storyline in only 12 short episodes, which isn't surprising considering the script was written by Ichirō Ōkouchi, also known for his work on the masterpiece "Code Geass." Princess Principal is an original work, not adapted from a manga, light novel, or anything else. The music is excellent…

Keeping short to avoid TLDR. This one...took me by surprise. I'm not that into slice of life. I'm not a huge fan of anime girls in general, nor high school age friend groups featuring anime girls. I often dread shows like this since I'm into historical accuracy even with parallel and fantasy histories. But this was a good show. Individual character motivations were fairly complex and layered. The relationships were believable and had actual traces of nuance. The spycraft reflected historical precedent with more accuracy than I ever expect out of an anime. The plot-twists actually got me a few times, and that is rare. I became invested in a bunch of teenage girl characters, even more rare for me. I'm a BL kind of guy. And miracle of miracles, the fanservice was plot-appropriate and there…

Fantastic atmosphere and action sequences backed up by strong, complex characters and an engaging overall plot. I don't know if I'd say the story is unique really, as it uses a lot of spy movie cliches and tropes, though to me it felt more like a well-made ode to a good spy movie/book/show than a tired retread of the genre. It's silly at times (the English dub really adds to this with its American voice actors doing a variety of accents that can be described as British-ish), but the production values are good, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed every episode--even the more episodic ones that in another show might feel like filler. Good stuff!

Princess Principal is a mid to late 2017 original anime from Actas (the studio behind Girls und Panzer & Tales of Phantasia) and 3Hz (a studio I've never watched anything from. Still, the stuff I've reviewed from Actas has a strong track record. So, let's be hopeful. Story: The narrative is set in an alternate history where the great nation of Albion has been split in two, the Kingdom and the Commonwealth. The two parts are separated by a wall and spies from both sides conduct covert missions encroaching into each others' territory. Yeah, I know what that's like. We follow a group of young girls sided with the Commonwealth and allied with the Kingdom's Princess, Charlotte, as they conduct a variety of missions. The one issue I have with this anime is that the episodes are in a really…

Thoughts: This anime was decent and I think deserves more attention. I found that it couldn't own up to how silly the plot was every time a "serious" scene came up. They release episodes at random points in the timeline but I don't think it helped and just made things confusing at the start. They keep repeating the same lines of dialogue about how being a spy means you have to lie and it got annoying. ^These were nitpicks and when I looked past them I got a fair amount of enjoyment. Story 6.5/10 The anime takes an episodic approach to storytelling meaning some episodes were not as good as others but overall I think majority of them were good when they focused on our main cast. I wish that there were more tense drama but everyone got along too well for it to happen even with villains. C…

If there's one word I feel I'd use to describe this show, it's balanced. 'Princess Principal' juggles a fair few ideas; a couple of genres, a decent amount of characters, and a couple of different tones, and manages to stitch everything together and keep it from tripping over itself. Primarily, it's a spy thriller, set in an alternative version of late 19th/early 20th Century London; now I think about it writer Ichiro Okouchi clearly has a thing for alternate histories, between this and 'Code Geass'. Mixed in are some light steampunky sci-fi elements, although it keeps itself nicely restrained in that regard; there is one core sci-fi concept, and it never feels overused to the point of stopping it still feeling like a believable period piece. Within that framework, we start to see where…

Cute girls pretty much invaded the Anime culture, so much so that it's hard to see an Anime without Cute Girls. You have, - Cute Girls doing Cute Things; - Cute Girls doing Camp things; - Cute Girls doing Idol things; - Cute girls doing Magical things; - Cute girls going an existential trip; And then you have, Cute Girls doing Espionage things, which is "Princess Principal" Princess Principal is an Espionage Anime in an alternate London where the gentlemen finally realized that cute girls are the most deceiving things in the world, and made them spies to do spy things. As someone who watches SoL a lot and finds almost every cute girl in SoL to be the most delightful thing to watch, seeing an Anime with cute & cool girls is kinda refreshing for me. Steampunk has to be my absolute favorite genre of science fiction. It's aesthetic is just so pleasing--those muted browns and grays intermixed with soft yellows and oranges that remind me of drinking a hot cup of earl gray tea on a cold but colorful autumn day. Candidly, I'm a bit of a soft Steampunk NUT. If I wasn't so lazy I would probably deck out my room which is painted that soft and relaxing muted brown and orange with tons of useless steam- and gear-related décor. Frankly, I'm amazed that there hasn't been an explosion of Steampunk media as nerd culture has gripped society--particularly among anime, since Princess Principal has shown the respective art style and genre are an absolutely beautiful pairing! One thing is for sure, this series has only helped my love for Steampunk to gr…

This tale of steampunk loli spies was more brutal than I expected. I thought it would primarily be an action show, and while there is a lot of that, the main focus is on spycraft. That's definitely to its benefit. This isn't all the bombastic James Bond style of spy story either; it reminded me more of the tense, grounded ruthlessness of Spooks. What we end up with is a tonal mix that can feel somewhat jarring in places, consisting of 60% Spooks spycraft, 30% Lupin III action, and 10% K-On tea parties. The girls aren't brain-washed zombies like Gunslinger Girl, so it takes a while to get used to them being all genteel and giggly one minute, then mercilessly executing unarmed civilians the next. It works though, through a combination of interesting individual episodes, engaging characters,…

As soon as I started the series, I didn't understand anything, just 0, after watching 5 episodes, I realized that something was wrong, so I thought "maybe I don't have to see episodes 1 to 12 but I have to watch them in based on the "case". watching the episodes based on the case and not based on the episode number, I was able to understand everything better, and in the end I liked the anime, I would like to understand why the anime adaptation and the number of episodes is not in chronological order, but completely random. Basically, instead of watching the episodes from episode 1 to twelve, in an increasing way, you have to watch the episodes in this order: 2, 3, 5, 4, 9, 1, 7, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12. By following this order, you are able to look much better. All in all the anime is nice, I lik…

Princess Principal is an anime that tries to do a lot of different things and does all of them very well. I was impressed and immersed with this anime from start to finish and I definitely want more. Even though the ending isn't conclusive (and there are sequels planned), this anime really does feel like the complete package. Let's take a look at why I feel that way. Story This anime is ultimately the story of a group of friends (especially two friends in particular) doing everything in their power to stay together in a cruel world trying to tear them apart while also undertaking dangerous missions to try and change the world for the better too. While the anime is largely episodic, it does a superb job juggling the episodic plot, overall plot, and character backstories. Princess Principal…
