Release that Witch

Release that Witch

Introduction

Modern man Cheng Yan unexpectedly dies and his soul travels to a medieval European-style otherworldly continent, becoming Roland, the fourth prince of the Kingdom of Graycastle. This playboy prince saves the witch Anna at an execution scene and is shocked to discover that magic really exists in this medieval-style otherworld. When Anna, as a witch, displays her magical skills, Roland realizes that magic can replace some modern technology, so he formulates a "great development of magical industry" plan. Thus, in an era where everyone hates witches, the independent Roland begins to recruit witches, using their magic to transform Border Town and improve the lives of himself and the locals. In addition to using magic to develop industry, Roland also introduces modern business ideas to Border Town. Under Roland's leadership, people manufacture firearms, and Roland gains public support. As the number of witches in Roland's camp increases, the magical industry continues to improve. At the same time, Roland will face battles with great families and other princes and princesses. As his territory expands, Roland successfully creates a harmonious coexistence between witches and ordinary people, gradually bringing the western territory of Graycastle and even the entire kingdom under his rule, and slowly uncovering the secrets of the devil race and the Witch Empire. Excellent anime might even give it a 10, but unfortunately the plot did not move forward enough to get to the good parts. Not the shows or the studios fault more the sponsors for trying to change the story to be more cutesy which ended up in the show being cancelled hopefully it gets picked back up eventually. Nearly all the characters are interesting and character development is on point. It definitely reuses some isekai plot points from other anime, but feels unique. It gives me a Dr. Stone vibe but darker. One of the best Anime to release in 2026.

Grounded Take on Kingdom-Building Isekai Having previously read and enjoyed the original web novel, I approached the donghua adaptation of Release That Witch with plenty of curiosity. The source material boasts a genuinely strong storyline and well-developed characters. Fortunately, the animation team made a brilliant choice that instantly sets it apart from the current donghua landscape: they chose 2D animation over the standard 3D, and it completely pays off. A Middle Finger to "Generic" Donghua Aesthetics The absolute standout feature of this adaptation is its character design. If you are tired of the cookie-cutter, "industrial pipeline" look dominating modern Chinese animation, Release That Witch is the antidote. The studio purposefully avoided tailoring the aesthetic to a modern fanb…

Really enjoyed the darker medieval tone which is more faithful to the book than the manga was. Even with my badly translated version of the book I've been enjoying the story, it explores kingdom building in a fantasy setting far more thoroughly than anything else I’ve come across and I was sad that the anime ended so soon as there is so much great source material to adapt. (I'm not kidding these 8 episodes are like <5% of the book) If you have ever daydreamed about what it would be like to leverage modern science & engineering in a medieval fantasy setting, I can highly recommend you check out this series and continue with the books as I did. Needs a season 2!

One hell of an anime, after a long time a good pacing, simple but strategic, the studio has rushed it due to production conflicts, but they made it good, I do not know whether a season 2 will come, but I wish for. The chinese animators can work on characters basic motion, action scenes are perfect, I'm taking about during convo, many chinese animes lack that, LOTM, RTW, that is one drawback for all chinese anime's. This anime style and color is little backwards, again due to budget, elemnts were good, music was average, action scenes were done nicely. You should also work on subs man, really need to work on that.

It should be said right away that this is hard to call a full-fledged work. The production hell the project was trapped in left a very clear mark, the most visible consequence of which is 8 episodes out of the 12 planned. Moreover, the incredible graphics and level of detail the series began with are barely discernible by the final episode. It should also be noted that, due mainly to the low quality of the source material, the depth of the work and its characters is not particularly impressive either. Yet at the same time, in those parts that were made and completed, one can feel the passion of the people who worked on it. The series immediately captivates with its atmosphere and direction, which first and foremost harkens back to Game of Thrones and recalls many other serious dramatic wor…

Released the Witch surprised me in the best way. I expected a typical isekai story, but it turned into something much more interesting. Instead of focusing only on battles or overpowered abilities, the series puts a lot of attention on kingdom-building, technology, politics, and how knowledge can change the world. What I enjoyed the most was watching Roland use modern ideas to improve everyday life and build a stronger nation. The witches were also written well, each with unique personalities and abilities that made them feel important instead of just supporting characters. The pacing can feel slow at times because of the world-building and political discussions, but I never found it boring. Seeing the gradual progress of the town and the relationships between the characters was satisfyi…

Damn this is so good they got the cruel and dark of the medieval times and the story is really good im just glad they did not go the manga route cause that was shit but the story itself is so good cant wait for the next season. Story and setting is kinda unique but it has tons of parts that is all over mainstream manga. The art style is just so good with the dark and grimy feel of it especially the armor weapons the clothes and the and the realistic look of the equipment, houses the techniques of inventions.

-That blend of fantasy, politics, science, magic and civilization building is what works most in its favor, because it does not feel like another generic isekai where the protagonist simply arrives powerful and that is it, here there is a more strategic idea, using modern knowledge to change a kingdom from its foundations, a concept with a lot of identity, the witches are not just decorative magical figures but important pieces within the world progress, and that gives a very interesting focus to the conflict against the church, the nobles, the conspiracies and the external threats, i also find it positive that the story has that air of the beginning of a revolution, where each advance can change the balance of power, as a viewer that hooks you because you are not only watching fights or p…

As someone who has read the Release That Witch manhua, I have mixed feelings, the character designs have been drastically altered looking nothing like their manhua counterparts and the atmosphere is quite different, too. I started watching the anime without realizing the connection, so I didn't even notice it was an adaptation until the second episode, which left me very confused at first. However, after watching a bit more, I began to appreciate the adaptation on its own merits. If you’ve read the manhua, you definitely need to prepare for changes and a period of adjustment, but once you get past that, you might really enjoy it. One disappointing aspect is that, due to production issues, the first season has only eight episodes instead of the intended twelve (if I recall correctly), mak…

Smart, pragmatic. A carefully built narrative about a world that can only be survived through heart, witchcraft and science. Need more. 8/10 I just finished Release That Witch, and my first impression is that it’s a shame it’s so short. The series has a restrained, polished tone paired with somewhat rough animation, yet it’s as intelligent as it is pragmatic. It patiently builds its world, its conflicts, and an intricate narrative that unfolds step by step before our eyes with remarkable care. The conflicts are logical, and their weight is tangible. Consequences matter, and every step reminds us of the cost of surviving in this world. If I had to point out one weakness, it would be the speed at which metallurgy progresses, although that’s probably a consequence of the show’s short runtim…

Holds serious potential to be the best "kingdom building" animated series. The show follows a simple premise: Witches are real, and persecuted for their powers. The main character seeks to help these women, and also utilize their powers for the betterment of humanity. As most fantasy kingdom building shows tend to be, the writing certainly has a tendency to just make things fall in place for the main character, but beyond that the show retains a serious tone with pacing that's easy to follow. I also like the setting. The graphical style is comparable to Wit / Mappa, with a dash of Castlevania. I overall really like the character designs, visual style and atmosphere created. Some people also praise the animation quality, though I found it a bit rough around the edges myself. However, the…

Just watch it !! The story is incredibly hooking and has a great, engaging pace. Even if you find some parts of the fantasy setup familiar, the fast pacing keeps you glued to the screen. It avoids getting bogged down, making it a thrilling watch from start to finish. the art style fits the action and world-building well. It does a great job of bringing the blend of magic and technology to life, which helps immerse you in the story. The characters are highly engaging, and their choices keep you invested in their journey. Their smart decisions and realistic reactions to the dangers around them make the stakes feel real. You genuinely root for them as they navigate this world. It is a fantastic series that does a wonderful job of grabbing your attention. Even though it is short, it is wel…

I really enjoyed the show, and feel the need to show support to the hole series that has been tangled in executive related reasons. It is indeed another isekai, however it does not repeat many of the cliches associated with the genre. It has a dark medieval setting, and works really well establishing the world building. I think it's a great recommendation for people that are into dark phantasy, and is refreshing to see something different and serious. I felt like it end right before really getting into the climax, after building so well into the season. I really hope that there will be a season 2

If witches existed and actually wanted to help humanity, this is probably what it would look like. It reminds me of Lord of the Mysteries mixed with Vinland Saga rich worldbuilding, brutal realism, smart politics, and characters that actually feel human. You get the mystery, strategy, kingdom-building, and darker themes. People suffer, people die, people make selfish choices, and the world reacts realistically. The witches aren’t just fanservice or overpowered plot devices they feel like actual people trying to survive in a cruel world. The art style fits the atmosphere really well too. It has that gritty and grounded feeling, and when things get violent or dark, it doesn’t hold back. Gory in its own way, but not just for shock value. Nobody feels unrealistically perfect or stupid just…

Imagine if they took slime isekai and somehow made it even more boring. There is no tension and there's pretty much no plot because the main character can perfectly solve every problem through deus ex machina. Roland can somehow perfectly recall how to create concrete, steam engines or muskets, and there is no explanation for it like how he might have been a mechanical engineer in his past life or anything. And on the off chance he upsets someone in power, he will just get rescued by some random character that hasn't even been introduced until that point. It's witch magic. I ain't gotta explain shit. It should be named omniscient engineer's viewpoint instead of 放开那个女巫 since the 女巫 don't really do anything other than act as pawns for Roland and seemingly have no real agency. If a witch mig…

Amazingly done show It should definitely get a continuation I sincerely hope for it to continue and get enough popularity and funds for more episodes and multiple seasons. The story is uniquely done and follows the novel more than the manhua wich is actually a good thing. The characters are correctly shown as far as i saw. I think that anybody who watches this show wil enjoy it. just try to get into it even though its in Chinese dub with English dub. All in all amazing show it really should get more attention and the love it deserves. I know for certain that many people will like this show it really shows Its unique style with engineering added too.

This is a GOATED anime that I think can surpass even the popular animes out there. Sadly this only got season 1 and the source novel is something you can't ignore. Believe me, if this gets another GOATED seasons with 12/24 eps, then the anime fans will be crazy to be even willing to buy on Chrunchyroll! The main character is a reincarnated modern world person who is going to turn that old era he reincarnated in into a modern era. The concept is quite unique here and the story with world building, character development, politics and magical powers are truly executed with completely different way. You will see the art is perfectly blended in, not too bright nor too dark, the character designs are marvelous and the way it executes every scene strongly complies with logic and realism. You wil…

if the manhua had stayed true to the novel’s mature tone, it could have been exceptional. Instead, the anime adaptation succeeded in capturing what fans loved all along. Story and Uniqueness The story starts with a familiar isekai trope a modern man reincarnated as a prince but quickly distinguishes itself through its focus on technological and societal development rather than brute power. Unlike typical harem or battle-focused series, Release That Witch emphasizes scientific progress, industrial revolution, and political strategy, making it unique in the genre. While the overall direction is somewhat predictable (the MC will succeed), the execution of inventions and world-building keeps it engaging. The integration of magic with science using witches as catalysts for progress is clever a…

The best isekai ever. This anime is definitely good stuff, and honestly, it would not be a crime to rate it a little higher than usual. It is even unique, in a way: an atypical isekai with none of the standard isekai nonsense like “adventurer guilds,” “skill-point grinding,” “systems,” overpowered edgy protagonists, and all the other clichés that make up 99% of the genre. While Japanese animation, especially in this genre, has turned into a conveyor belt of degradation, the Chinese suddenly stood up and actually made something good. So, what do we have here? The art and animation are not expensive-looking, but they are done very well. You can clearly see that the artists tried their best with the budget they had. At times, the visuals look slightly gloomy and grey, matching the medieval…
