Scum’s Wish is hands down one of the worst anime I’ve ever forced myself to finish, and one of the most miserable pieces of media I’ve encountered, period.
This show is so aggressively unpleasant it borders on self-parody. Every episode after the pilot feels like an endurance test designed to make you hate everyone involved. The characters are not just unlikable, they’re actively repulsive, the “romance” is toxic sludge, and the entire production seems committed to maximizing discomfort with zero payoff, insight, or even competent melodrama.
I only dragged myself through all 12 episodes so I could say I finished it before calling it garbage. That is the sole achievement this series can claim is that it made me suffer long enough to earn the right to shit on it properly.
Don’t bother. Wa…

Honestly, I don't know if I love or hate this series...
Kuzu no Honkai is a somewhat unique experience. It tells a story about the darker, uglier side of human nature, something comparable to School Days, but in a much more realistic and, above all, less exaggerated way. The anime doesn't try to turn its characters into unfeeling monsters; on the contrary, it portrays ordinary people making poor decisions for reasons that, however questionable, we can understand.
When I first watched the anime, I felt something I believe many viewers shared: I really wanted Hanabi and Mugi to end up together. After all, despite all the mess surrounding them, there was a certain chemistry between them. Revisiting the series now, however, I can better understand why that likely could never have worked out.…

You know that kind of anime that throws you into adult situations you’ve never seen in any other series? This one will definitely hook you; it features a storyline weaving together the lives of more than five people as they face everyday situations we never imagined we’d see portrayed.
As Shinobu Sensui once said, watching someone spiral deeper into their own ruin is like seeing a pot of ink spill onto a sheet of white paper—it’s bizarre, yet strangely satisfying. The kicker is that the anime hits you with a brilliant plot twist—the kind that makes you wonder just how far "love" can really go.

I really, really loved the OST, the story, the visuals and funnily enough.. the characters.. depicting the loss of innocence, lust, loneliness, emptiness, fear of being alone, possessiveness.. somehow it all clicked for me. Maybe because of my experiences and my broken relationships? It's all plausible and feels real. Honestly, I felt really uncomfortable watching some episodes, but likely because I recalled situations from my past that I thought I've forgotten.
Overall, it's not for everyone, i wouldn't recommend it to anyone with very few or a single relationship and it may not work for younger watchers (come back in a few years), but if you experienced messy relationships and one sided love in your youth, you will find some peaces of them here for sure and I guarantee it would be worth…

Kuzu no Honkai is what would happen if you took the absolute worst, most toxic, and horny human beings and put them all together. As you might expect, this leads to some fantastic entertainment. On a real note, this anime is actually a fantastic character-driven drama that manages to have a profound impact on the viewer, one that can only be matched by a few others. In the best way possible, Kuzu no Honkai is a hard watch. It’ll make you want to throw up and cover your eyes, yet you can’t help peeking through your fingers.
The story takes place in a familiar high school setting and follows Hanabi and Mugi as they use each other as replacements for their unrequited loves, eventually getting roped into a love polygon. Being a character-driven show, the story itself lacks a singular goal or…

It's an anime that has real characters, real feelings, just overall, real. Many romance animes have such fickle emotions and ridiculous notions of love, but Scum's Wish explores true, ugly, and at the same time, beautiful, human emotions. Many would say it's the "dark side" of humanity, but it's rare to see such themes explored in the anime world. Please DNI with this anime if you're sensitive to 18+ actions and scenes, or, people actually being scumbags. However, it's a must watch if you feel like the normal romance animes just don't scratch the itch within you, since they're normally just squealing and high pitched voice girls interacting with chill guys, or, if they're not in that stereotype, they'll still be about stuff happening in pure, innocent, high schools. It also talks about lus…

I'll keep this short and sweet; I love this anime/manga.
There is a TL;DR at the bottom.
And as for why I love it, it's due to the fact that I've experienced similar scenarios that are in this story. I relate quite a bit to Mugi, losing your adolescence in that sort of way, filling in the gap of someone you love with someone else etc etc. But I also have a bit of experience with some of what Hanabi went through, though not so much with her love interest issues, but more on the mental states she goes through.
I have watched it multiple times now, and it hits just about the same every subsequent time, in the ways that are painful yet enjoyable, if that makes sense.
I genuinely think the reason why these dark romance stories tend not to do well or at least, not do as well as other types…

To put it simply, Kuzu no Honkai tries too hard to be deep, but ends up as a lackluster story that might appeal to some because of its unique premise, but also make some absolutely despise it. Unfortunately, I'm part of the latter.
One of the most common points that I see about this show is that it is mature and realistic. But, seriously? I know that they try to represent how lust can consume one's mind but it genuinely feels like half of the show's time was spent in a bedroom scenario. It felt like an H anime that just got censored. This makes the pacing feel off and also makes it incredibly boring to watch.
The characters are all unlikable and act stupid, genuinely no one acts like this. There's no way half of the characters could get away unnoticed after doing all that, not to mention…

What is love? A question as old as humanity itself. Some will tell you it’s pure, selfless, eternal. But Kuzu no Honkai whispers something darker that love is rarely pure it’s hunger, ego, emptiness, and the desperate need to be seen.
Hanabi and Mugi aren’t searching for love; they’re clawing at the hollow space it leaves behind. They kiss not for passion, but for anesthesia. They hold each other not because they’ve found “the one,” but because being alone is worse. Every embrace is a lie they both agree to believe.
This isn’t your sugarcoated rom-com. It’s a mirror held up to the parts of us we’d rather deny the pettiness, the lust, the ego. It asks, “Do you love them? Or do you just love how they make you feel?”
By the end, there’s no happy closure, no grand redemption. Just two broke…

With Scums Wish I kept asking myself Just who the Scum was. One thing I'm sure of, It isnt Hanabi. She is just a person who thinks she is scum and doesn't want anyone to know it. That is why she agreed to the relationships with Sanae and Mugi. These two use her for their own desires. Mugi knows his is fake. Sanae wants it to be real but probably knows better. The real Scum is Akane. She wants to purposely mess up everyone's life because hers was messed up. In the end Hanabi did the right thing by letting everyone go. She knows she is confused and needs time to get it right. Mugi and Sanae won't have as an easy time of it. This is like a film noir in America. It's basically a show about life with no Character Arc's to get over. it just is what it is. I don't like these types of shows. I wis…

This anime isn’t your typical romance story. Instead of idealizing love, it explores the harsh realities that can unfold in a relationship, showing that not everything is beautiful or perfect when feelings are involved. It raises an important question: Is love alone enough to sustain a relationship, or is there something more?
Honestly, it hits close to home and reflects the darker sides of modern relationships and human behavior. The story is simple on the surface, but its development keeps you engaged. While some parts are predictable, the ending was unexpected, though I didn’t find it entirely satisfying, it still felt appropriate for the story.
In short, this anime leans more toward a realistic take on romance, revealing how messy and complicated love can truly be.

This anime is truly spectacular.
If you can look past the physical romance scenes (which are well animated if that's what you're looking for) like i was able to, you sort of discover what this show truly excels at.
The inner monologue of weighing one's boundaries, expectations and desires against another's and the potential of, if not straight up, toxicity that may manifest.
The show does have a main relationship it follows however it quickly branches into depicting many different relationship scenarios and archetypes across the cast. From loving someone who doesn't love you to being loved by someone you've never considered. Friends with benefits to i can fix him/her. There is plenty of range to be had here and at times it can feel like you are watching a car crash but are too captivated…

Despair can sometimes be the only thing we see around us. Sometimes we don't know who we are, or we have the wrong answers, and so we search for our selves in others who are going through the same thing. However that only ever serves to confuse us even more.
Scum's wish is exactly that: a tale of multiple fucked up borderline dissociative people who need others to feel for them or to help them feel. It feels like, with the exception of one or two characters, each person is indeed a scum. You hate them, but you want good things for them; you pity them. It's what made it such a compelling watch. And the fact that this is one of those anime's where a "happy ending" isn't guaranteed or advertised just makes you want to find out how each storyline is going to end for the characters. Once again…

Scum's Wish is what would happen if the Disney Channel was allowed to make a rated R show
The concept seems interesting at the start- two broken people finding solace in the other, indulging in their unrequited fantasies. This immediately becomes contrived, as said broken people are clearly mentally handicapped. I enjoy realistic dramas with deeply flawed characters, but unless the entire school is a special ed class none of this could or would ever happen in real life.
The worst and most infuriating part of the show for me was the lesbian rape(s) from a certain character, which not only are never properly addressed, but almost feel condoned. She's made out to be both sympathetic and the victim, then they make up and all is forgiven. Despite her ways not changing whatsoever (as we see in…

Tragedy for the sake of tragedy. If there is a phrase to perfectly encapsulate what this series is, this would be it. The anime community at large once again desperately tries to make something out of nothing. Everything in this series is completely fabricated in such as blatant manner, and it's obviously done so to promote this fake idealized vision that people seem to make out of this series: the "subversion of romance." From character motivations, to certain choices made by characters—all of it is very out-of-touch with little to no substance.
Characters are completely non-sensical and pathetic. No one has basic morals. No one has boundaries or standards. And most important of all, no one has any common sense. Practically every character interaction is conveniently shaped to be this e…

"I'm still young, hopelessly stupid, and easily excited." - a typical highschool shithead.
Do you remember being sixteen? Breaking someone's heart for the first time? Having your heart broken, maybe? Making out with a stranger drunk in a dark back alley? Maybe you've cheated, maybe you were cheated on, had your promiscuous episodes that perhaps never ended. This is what this anime is about, it's about experiencing what feels like 'grown-up' romance for the first time.
Kuzu no Honkai is by no means an easy watch, it's not 'enjoyable' in the literal sense of the word, but you will enjoy it if you like stories that don't go easy on the audience. It's a highschool romance through and through, most characters are stupid kids who think they're adults because they tongue kiss each other and hav…

Everyone in this show is a plain loser.
It took me 4 whole years to finish this anime.
I was in a desperate need of a romance anime when someone recommended Scum's Wish to me and I fully regret on watching this boring show, filled with unlikeable characters and straight up dumb decisions.
Just don't watch it. If you want good romance, ANYTHING else is probably better than this.
This review doesn't surpass the character minimum so I need to write a bit, I want to say again just how bad this is, that it took me 4 years to watch 12 episodes. Each episode more boring than the last one.
Cheers

I can always respect an anime that's willing to explore themes of sex, love and relationships with a level of maturity. However, Scum's Wish misses the mark with its execution. Though there's a lot of emotional complexity that you can sink your teeth into, the characters are ultimately let down by the show's heavy use of melodramatic inner monologues. I appreciate the show's portrayal of love- that it's often lustful, confusing and painful- that we're often weak and vulnerable when we've fallen into it. However, Scum's Wish doesn't offer enough insight or profundities to justify 12 episodes of horny, miserable people being horny and miserable.

DO NOT WATCH THIS SAVE YOURSELF!!!!!
Characters were nonsensical, unrealistic, vapid, idiotic, and all of the other negative words I can't think of.
Episodes felt very long and pointless.... nothing felt like it meant anything, and wasn't satisfying to see play out.
A huge waste of time.
Characters are all bad people, yet they make it out that they are all victims in some way (very irritating).
Somehow, Rent a Girlfriend and Domestic Girlfriend were more heartfelt and actually interesting despite the insane premises and annoying characters and situations; I didn't think that was possible.
This is just Toradora, but bad
