Azumanga Daioh: The Animation

Azumanga Daioh: The Animation

Introduction

Chiyo Mihama begins her high school career as one of the strangest students in her freshman class—a tiny, 10-year-old academic prodigy with a fondness for plush dolls and homemade cooking. But her homeroom teacher, Yukari Tanizaki, is the kind of person who would hijack a student's bike to avoid being late, so "strange" is a relative word. There certainly isn't a shortage of peculiar girls in Yukari-sensei's homeroom class. Accompanying Chiyo are students like Tomo Takino, an energetic tomboy with more enthusiasm than brains; Koyomi Mizuhara, Tomo's best friend whose temper has a fuse shorter than Chiyo; and Sakaki, a tall, athletic beauty whose intimidating looks hide a gentle personality and a painful obsession with cats. In addition, transfer student Ayumu Kasuga, a girl with her head stuck in the clouds, fits right in with the rest of the girls—and she has a few interesting theories about Chiyo's pigtails! Together, this lovable group of girls experience the ups and downs of school life, their many adventures filled with constant laughter, surreal absurdity, and occasionally even touching commentary on the bittersweet, temporal nature of high school. Such a cute show with funny jokes dedicated to all types of people i feel! my favorite was sakaki, but i definitely relate to Osaka the most! the ending was so sweet, i was trying not to cry! i definitely recommend it if your just looking for a medium length, sweet, cute, and funny show! the story isnt unique per say but you dont see too much of it now a days! (highschoolers simply going through their high school years) but its definitely played out in an adorable way! the art style definitely fit to the characters, the silly, simple art style is perfect for all the characters! The characters were all so cute, but i loved the contradictory in a few of the characters, it makes them seem like normal girls with different personalities! I can totally get that this show might not be for ev…

Sata Andagii Azumanga Daioh is to CGDCT (cute girls doing cute things) as The Lord of the Rings is to fantasy. This anime makes you laugh and cry. Even though the characters don’t have too much development, it’s a great slice of life. The heart of the anime is the characters; everyone is heartwarming. Personally, my favorite characters were Sakaki-san, Chiyo-chan, and Osaka-san. The plot is just a slice of life; it doesn’t have romance or big dramas. You can just enjoy how the heartwarming characters interact together. As a result, they don’t have big character development, but it’s entertaining. Something that I don’t like is Kimura-sensei; it’s so uncomfortable.

ENG: The beginning of the end for comedy in anime, foundational to the "anime about cute girls who do nothing" genre. I simply can't give it much credit; moe with zero…

Azumanga Daioh holds a special place in my heart that no other anime can fill. It's a really silly and absurd slice of life about these high school girls that become friends and hangout with each other. This show beautifully showcases the important of friendship at a young age. I love each and every character (except for the creep, Mr. Kimura). Each of the girls has their own unique personality that anyone watching can quickly become attached to and even see themselves in that character. 10/10 from start to finish, I don't care what anyone else says. If you watched other animes such as nichijou, then you'll definitely love this one and its absurdity. Give this a watch and make sure to check out Yotsuba&! once you're finished! :)))

Azumanga Daioh is a 10/10 comfort anime that still feels fresh because the comedy comes from real character moments. Chiyo-chan is the heart of the show — her optimism and pure reactions are genuinely wholesome and can even make you tear up during the school trip and graduation episodes, not from sadness but from how warm they feel. She’s like a cure to the heart in character form, making every scene she’s in brighter just by trying her best. The whole cast works the same way: Osaka, Sakaki, Kagura all get laughs from personality instead of forced gags. At 26 tight episodes with zero filler, it’s the kind of slice-of-life you rewatch when you need to smile. I just finished the anime minutes ago and am literally in tears, which doesn't happen to me often

Azumanga Daioh is simply legendary—a true pioneer of early anime memes from the dawn of internet culture. After nearly twenty years watching all kinds of series, I finally decided to revisit it, and it still left me completely satisfied. There isn’t a traditional plot here. Instead, you follow the everyday lives of six students, with Osaka easily standing out as my personal favorite. The comedy is masterful—light, natural, and consistently funny—and the group chemistry is so warm and effortless that you quickly grow attached to every character. It feels a bit like a female version of Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, but with its own charming twist of cuteness and absurd humor. And the color palette? Pure early-2000s iconography—instantly nostalgic just to look at.

This may be one of the most overrated overglazed boring and barely entertaining animes i have ever watched. It isn't good as a slice of life neither as a comedy. There is no plot or story, the characters are just walking tropes lacking both meaning and humor. The whole show is a poor excuse of a comedy, the only way I'd be entertained by it is if i was 8 and had nothing absolutely NOTHING to do. Most of the jokes come as intrusive thoughts or random events (not the good kind) while having barely any setup or great execution, with some jokes being unbelievably repetitive. The characters are as bland and as boring as they come, dilly dallying and acting silly. Which is alright in most cases but not when the whole show is that and only that.

I can't believe I just finished this show... Azumanga Daioh is 26 episodes of down-to-earth high school life. It captures the joy and whimsy of youth, shown through a lovable main cast. Each member has a "quirk" that makes them so much more lovable as you follow their activities throughout high school. They go on vacations to the beach, to amusement parks, different cities, participate in school sports and culture festivals, just like regular high schoolers. We get to see inside their minds, what goofy and silly thoughts each one may have, to the point where we may even spend most of an episode in their headspace instead of real life. Not to mention their amazing dynamics with each other make everything so much better. There are so many wholesome and calm moments that I would consider it…

Educated experts sad "Its like Nichijou". Nichijou from temu at best. Osaka-san at the end very well summarised what happened in the entire show. Chiyo-chan gained few cetimeters in hight, Sakaki-san in chest. It had its moments ...a few, but mostly just girls and women screamed or shouted, sometimes to eachother. Absolutely no one, not a single charachter developed a tiny bit by anymean. It hadn't said anything meaningfull about lonelyness, love, friendship, decision making, strugling... caring... BUT ALL OF THIS, IS IN THE SHOW! For the fuck sake... sometimes a character raised the actual interesting question, with her mouth! BUT! When the slightliest opportunity appeared to try to tell a story about something, what had actual weight or influence, the writers just droped. Left behind.…

People are taking this anime too seriously. If you came to turn off your brain and watch a "slice of life" type anime then it's good. The anime is simple and it knows exactly what it wants to be. The characters are good and they compliment each other. The story again is random as it's a slice of life. If you don't mind watching random stuff then it's fine. Voice acting is done really good as well as the music and OSTs. The jokes are okay, I've had a few laughs but never really laughed super hard. Overall I'd give it a big fat 8 or 9 since Azumanga was pretty different for the time it was created.

Reviewing Azumanga Daioh in 2025 is difficult. It’s impossible to ignore the elephant in the room, that its success is pretty much singularly responsible for the development of “CGDCT” as an independent genre. Moe had not yet broken containment as a term, nor had iyashikei. One can see the symptoms here of what was to come, but Azumanga Daioh on its own is a refreshing delight. Adapted from a 4-koma manga, Azumanga Daioh originally aired with each of the five segments running Monday through Friday, with the compiled episode airing on the weekend. Looking back on it now, more than 20 years later, it feels strangely empty in its lack of anything but slice of life: there’s no gimmick, no club or interest or raison d’etre that ties the characters together. The only thing approaching this i…

Azumanga Daioh: The Animation is an influential piece of work that changed the industry for the better. The great narrative elements used in this show have echoed in the anime industry for the past 20 years trying to catch the spark that Azumanga Daioh: The Animation once lit. I personally watched the dub in Vietnamese and I really liked the characters! The characters are really well written and analyzers of media can appreciate the thought that went behind writing them, such as Osaka also known as Ayumu Kasuga who is called Osaka because she comes Osaka and speaks like someone from Osaka. For those unaware, Osaka is the 2nd biggest city in Japan and they are quite unique over there so that's why she has the nickname. She is a smart girl with a great bright future in teaching in front of h…

This is a comfort anime in its natural evolution. The characters are great—no overarching plot, just people being people! And silly—really silly! It’s quite repetitive, probably due to the source material, but I think that actually helps it feel more grounded. It was my first slice-of-life anime, and I loved it! There’s no need for Kagura to even exist—not as a character, not even as a concept. He just wasn’t necessary. Azumanga is a great anime to just tune out for a bit. Despite the lack of plot, unremarkable animation, repetitiveness, and Kagura, it’s not a hard watch. The jokes are genuinely funny, and the characters are lovely. And it’s just 26 episodes!

I love azumanga there's a lot of reasons why this show holds a good place in my heart. One it was my first real slice of life anime and got me into the moe genre as a whole! Two I think it's a nice and enjoyable watch. But that being said a lot of the negative reviews i've seen aren't wrong at all. Azumanga doesn't have a plot, azumanga can be boring, azumanga is for sure overated, but so what there's also a very big reason it's enjoyed so much by ppl. The characters are probably the show's strongest suit! With my favorite being kagura (Best girl idc lol), The characters are silly very relatable a lot of the conversations they have with one another are very much like conversations I have with my friends. And that's another big reason I love this show it's RELATABLE. Truth is life is ver…

When you're happy and you know it say "sataaa andagiii"! If you're happy and you know it say "americaaa yaaaa"! You're happy and you know it and you really wanna share it say "haloooo everynyan"! 100/10 anime really recommended. In modern times when new animes and mangas fail to implement even the most basic story and their adaptations seem to be ppt for whatsoever reason just one episode of peak comedy is enough to overcome the grief of watching soul less stories. Why can't i post a shorter review MAL? everytime a 100 words essay is not required to convey the feelings of one for the anime they watched.

Absolute peak. There is no slice of life anime (Except maybe lucky star) that reaches this level of perfection. The soundtrack is iconic and very easy to become emotionally attached to. The op and ed are especially beautiful. The characters aren’t very deep, but that doesn’t really matter given the genre. It’s not a particularly long show, it’s only 26 episodes, but it doesn’t over stay it’s welcome and that’s great The show is purely episodic, meaning it barely has a story outside of the plots of the episodes themselves(like most slice of life anime). Or um I mean OSAKER AMERICA YAA!! OHH MAH GAW

This is a work that the public normally starts watching without any expectations, just to have a laugh and pass the time, but this anime surprises, and surprises a lot. Obviously every good comedy needs to be funny, and in this regard, this work is essentially better of most comedies I've seen when it comes to anime. Even renowned comedy animes usually lag behind here in the West because many of the jokes only make sense to the Japanese, this leads to some unfunny jokes for us, or even ones that don't make sense here, but Azumanga Daiou doesn't, every joke is hilarious, all the characters are memorable and captivating, the aesthetics are incredible, and it's not even possible to give enough praise here. The way the author handled the relationships between the characters without leaving a…

Right, I have no idea how this review is going to come out, since this show is basically like getting a lobotomy. If I were to take an IQ test now, it would come back negative. So if what follows here makes no sense, now you know why. Azumanga Daioh is one of the animes of all time. It is definitely of of the animes ever. Of all the animes to come out, this is certainly one of them. There seems to be some kind of consensus that this is some groundbreaking masterpiece and some zenith of storytelling, but I honestly can't see that and mainly because the story is so nonsensical on many levels. I mean, when you're so absurd that you make Asobi Asobase and Daily Lives of Highschool Boys make sense, then you're really on something. It's all over the place, it's chaotic and my brain has been fri…

I know giving a show like this a 10/10 almost always comes off as over exaggeration and something only done as a joke but this rating is my genuine feeling. It took me almost 8 months to watch all 26 episodes and it's because after the first couple of episodes I had a realization and made the conscious decision that instead of just binge watching and getting it over with, I would instead save it for those rainy days where I REALLY need a pick me up to keep me goig. After thinking about for a bit, I came to realization the best way to describe why like this show so much would be a comparison against non other than Neon Genesis Evangelion. For as wild as it sounds, I think this actually works especially because NGE is a much more known show and one that you're more likely to actually watch…

This is indeed a review. Everything that is stated is my genuine opinion, which I think I need to say so people know this is not a shitpost review. But, I will keep it short(ish). Azumanga Daioh was a comedy manga serialized by Kiyohiko Azuma, an anime produced by JC Staff in 2002, and a series viewed by only the coolest people on the planet for the last 22 years. I love Azumanga Daioh with every fiber of my being, I live and breathe it...and it's a show you can view any time of the year without feeling an ounce of boredom. Even so, stating exactly why the series is good is a lot more difficult to do than simply proclaim. At the surface this really is just about some Japanese girls who went to high school. Some may sit through it and end up hating it by the time it's over, some on the oth…
