Shakugan no Shana: Season I

Shakugan no Shana: Season I

Introduction

The world has become a slaughtering ground for the Crimson Denizens, mysterious beings from a parallel universe who thrive on the life energy of humans. These merciless murderers only leave behind scant remainders of souls called "Torches," which are mere residues that will eventually be destroyed, along with the very fact of the victims' existence from the minds of the living. In an ambitious endeavor to put an end to this invisible, hungry massacre, warriors called Flame Hazes relentlessly fight these monsters. One fateful day, Yuuji Sakai ceases to be a regular high schooler—he becomes trapped in a crevice of time and is suddenly attacked by a Denizen. Coming to his rescue just in the nick of time is a nameless hunter who seems no different from an ordinary young girl except for her blazing eyes and burning crimson hair. However, before Yuuji can learn anything more about his situation, he discovers that he has already been reduced to a Torch—merely a scrap of memory waiting to be extinguished. This is absolutely beautiful. By far one of the very best anime I've ever seen. This story has well developed characters and adds just enough on the side to make everything work. The plot moves along smoothly and I find no gaps. There are no dropped plot lines. It's really just been one of the best rides I've taken through a show. The way the show begins and immediately dives into the progression of the story with ease is just fascinating to me. There is no hang up on any one bad guy then two episodes of the time, which keeps things fresh and they didn't get a chance to just sit there and grow stale if they have a head-to-head meet that never ends. I was fully expecting with a show they had this many episodes to fall prey to that caveat, but I'm thrilled that it didn't. There were many…

This is one of the underrated action/supernatural/romance anime. I remember watching it when I was a kid then after rewatching it now, it all made more sense to me why it's one of my faves. You'll appreciate more the scenes, story, dialogues and the entire thing even more as an adult regardless of the PG-13 type of audience. But.. why is Yoshida Kazumi one of the main?!?! like.....??? just why???? I couldn't think of any reason why would she be considered as MC... ANYHOW, I loved how catchy the intro was. Imo, your curiosity will be tested after watching the first ep. It'll let you crave more of what'll happen next and next and next. Whenever the situation started to heat up, you'll feel more the intensity because of the music. It gives more chills and impact to both action/emotional…

I'm going to start by saying, I love shojo and shounen titles, it's fun just to watch people duke it out and turn your brain off, or watch a blossoming couple as they go about their relationship. Now this anime has both, but in my personal opinion they don't do both particularly well, except for one fight in one of the earlier episodes and the romance doesn't make me root for any particular relationship cause non of them seem believable or fun to watch. We learn bout Shana's job as a "heat haze" which sounds like a '"soul reaper" type gig which they don't explain or show really well, like we're supposed to think she kills monsters to counter evil or somthin but she only kills like 2 in the first episode then these small fry never show up again cause we gotta focus on the bigger human looki…

With Lodoss, I covered a fantasy anime from an era in which I was born but never a part of. This time then, I decided to cover a fantasy anime from the era when I did become a weeb. Or, well, sort of. Y’see, while there was never a distinct point at which I became a full and proper weeaboo, my transition being a long, gradual one over many, many years, I can safely say that the first time I became a part of the larger weeb community was some time around the mid to late 2000’s. This was the period of the Big Three, a uniquely American phenomenon as far as I know, and TOM 3, a uniquely American character as far as I can tell. And it’s during this time that Shakugan no Shana came onto the anime scene. But y’see, I never actually watched Shana when it first aired. So many other shows I did w…

With the enigma of Haruhi Suzumiya's character, ※Noiji Itō's other lead heroine, by design, is a firecracker: she's strong-willed, intuitive, and a badass fighter. In the concept of parallel dimensions, Shana is the centripetal force, freeing the souls of slaves to the "Crimson Denizens"! That premise and her iconic personality alone, was enough to get me to give this series a watch-through! ※Ms. Itō sure knows how to attach herself to good projects! ⚠️ This review will have spoilers ⚠️ —Story/Characters I have always been drawn to stories where a lone warrior fights the treacherous, supernatural entities to release humans as their slaves! That's why I loved "Vampire Princess Miyu" so much, as a teenager. There was just so much at stake, when the possibility of mortal death was readil…

Note: This will be a review of the series in its entirety, as in all three seasons plus the OVAs. Overview: It's a shame not many people talk about "Shakugan no Shana" nowadays, because at the time of its release it was one of the most popular anime on television. Unfortunately, this has caused many other series to replicate it, causing a lot of newcomers to go in and find nothing special. Having watched it myself, however, I feel this reputation is largely undeserved. While there are some parts that haven't aged well, it still has plenty of strengths that keep it several steps ahead of most of its children, chief among these being some of the greatest character development I have ever seen. Story (7.5/10): The story is set in the fictional Misaki City, where unbeknownst to humanity, a w…

Shakugan no Shana manages to be one of the most unbalanced watches I've had in recent memory. It has strong character development, and basically nothing of anything else. The characters really are great, especially early on in the show. Shana and Yuji are especially good, though some of the side characters also get decently developed. Sure, it's somewhat predictable, but considering that most anime doesn't include any character development, it's easy to praise the show for it. The villains are significantly less developed and mostly just feel like they're out of a B-movie. They're wacky enough to keep you entertained, but nothing to write home about. The show does drama really well, and manages to create realistic feeling situations where there is interpersonal conflict between the c…

I’m gonna be short. *REMEMBER THIS IS A SUBJECTIVE REVIEW WITH SOME OBJECTIVE POINTS* Story: 7/10 It’s not that original, and there are a lot, really, A LOT, of “objects” with specific names and sometimes you may not remember them all. However, some events have some sort of explanation. For example(WARNING SPOILER WARNING SPOILER), in the last chapter after destroying the Balle Masque(I think that was the name), Yuuji didn’t die because he was wearing the anti-flames ring. Art: 5/10 Pretty mediocre Sound: 9/10 SNS excels at this. The OPs and EDs were really good. Specially the first OP, it’s great. Character: 8/10 The only characters that needed a bit more development were Ike and Yoshida. It felt like they were just there to do nothing. Yoshida is pretty annoying not gonna lie. The worst…

A great first season of the show. The storylines were consistently interesting throughout, with the exception of a few slice-of-life/romance episodes, and seamlessly blended realism and fantasy elements in a satisfactory manner (as opposed to being "slice-of-life THEN fantasy", they were intertwined). The show did a great job of showing just how unfamiliar the whole situation was to it's protagonists (especially in regards to Yuji and Kazumi), and conveyed their shock at the truth about the world and themselves very well. The fight scenes were consistently exciting, and the emotional moments usually hit their mark. Humor didn't really, though there were some moments. The animation and direction were great throughout the show, the art-style and character designs were great and cute, and…

Lame ass over rated piece of shit anime with lots and lots of flaws appearing every episode. The only good thing about this anime is the first episode. Take my advice and don't waste your time on this shit. The anime tries to keep you watching by using the usual romance slice of life anime shenanigans but nothing deep or masterful in here. In fact, the series seems so poorly planned later on as there are so many contradictions emerging one after another. Absolutely horrible experience tbh. The music and soundtracks are good but they always use the same soundtrack at the same time over and over again so that it's effect seems to become negligible over time.

Let's have a review starting at the end: Shakugan no Shana is a good show; if you're at all interested in monster-fighting urban fantasy with magic and powers running around keeping the world safe on the secret, you'll probably like it. More interesting, I feel, is why Shakugan no Shana works: because it's far from unique. There are a million other stories like this one, both older and newer, both in Japanese and in Western media. But in my opinion, Shana does kind of stand apart from the pack as something memorable and good. So if it's not the core concept being unique and engaging, what is it? It's... a little bit of everything. For one, we have the story. Again, this is sort of every urban fantasy story: something supernatural is menacing the locality of the writers' choice (City, in…

This review will contain every season as I'm to lazy to go through each one.. SPOILERS AHEAD Story 7/10: Let me just say that was not worth 3 seasons to see how they ended up together in the end.. I knew there was a happy ending because for some reason I'm always looking things up and getting them spoiled for me and I'm cool with that! Anyways.. The story line is decent but not the best I've ever seen and I expected that since episode 1! Alot of people talk bad on season 2 and 3 and I don't understand why? They were just as enjoyable as season 1.. The story did get confuse me at some times and I'd find myself skipping through parts that didn't seem important to the current story line like either when they'd be talking about feelings or just random shit they had done.. Seemed like they dra…

I recently re-watched Shakugan no Shana and am still amazed how much I enjoy the series. Don't get me wrong. It's not perfect. It has quite a number of flaws. But if you can get past the negatives, the show is quite enjoyable. Shakugan no Shana starts out with Yuuji Sekai. He's your average everyday kid with very few problems. One day, he gets attacked by a monster. Luckily, Shana comes to the rescue and saves him. Due to this courageous act, Yuuji and Shana form an unlikely friendship. For the rest of the series, both of them team up to protect one another from the monsters, villains, and other beings that are trying to destroy the world. The animation here is very well done, especially during fight scenes. Usually, during a fight scene, the entire show is glazed in bright red. It make…

Yuuji Sakai thinks he is just a normal high school student until he finds out the truth; that the world has been deceived from the truth and that he is only a “Torch”. On his way home one day, time suddenly stopped. Shocked, confused and with no time to figure out what the heck was going on, Yuuji is attacked by a demon. Before the demon can actually do him damage, a young girl dressed in black, wielding a sword appears in front of him, slaying the demon. She tells him she is a “Flame Haze” and he is a “Torch” and that her job is to stop the “Denizens” and any “Rinne” they send from stealing human existence and upsetting the balance in the world. My thoughts: I very much enjoyed watching this anime. I love Shana and how she always says “shut up” 3 times. I had a little trouble liking Yuuj…

Ok, This was the start on my quest of what would become my favourite anime of all time. We're thrown in straight away to the scene where the Flaming Haired, Blazing Eyed Hunter, Shana is fighting the enemy known as Crimson Denizens. So I thought, hmm, Standard affair. Main character is shown fighting. Then Shana drops the bombshell that Yuuji Sakai, the male lead is dead. I started laughing thinking like we're in the beginning of the series and he's already dead, how does that work? From there we find out about the Midnight Lost Child treasure tool and how it lets Yuuji live eternally and more. A great start to the series showing how Yuuji finally understands the struggle between Flame Haze (what Shana and many others like her are known as) and Crimson Denizen.

short review I hated watching this and even remembering it just to write this review makes me hate myself for watching it. Don't ever watch this pile of garbage. Shana was so unlikeable I want to murder the writer who created her, the voice actor's voice was awful and Yuuji was just a husk of a character, I'd compare him to an NPC in a video game with no dialogue and is completely useless and is just there to fill up the scenery. I could only watch one episode a day and I don't think anyone should watch a single episode

Before reading please remember: This is just my opinion! You might like or hate the anime, it really depends on your personality TBH. This is my first review on this page so go easy on me pls ;-; Okay, so let's start: Story: 6/10 Nothing special, nothing new. Has a few filler episodes. Boring at times. Art: 8/10 The art is amazing for a 2005/2006 anime. The anime also had a pretty good budget. Sound: 8/10 Again, nothing special, but I really liked it. Just my opinion. Characters: 6/10 Now, this is what really ruined the anime for me. First of all, Yoshida Kazumi. Probably the most hated character by everyone. She just decides to butt in the relationship of the male and female MC and try to take Yuji (male main character) for herself. It gets really annoying and to be honest, without Kaz…

The world of Shakugan no Shana is a fascinating one. It is rich with lore and completely developed into something surreal yet believable. Unfortunately, there are many times in the first two seasons where we become lost in the "comedic" school lives of Yuji & co. or slice of life-esque drama, all of which are irrelevant to the plot. It distracts from the things that make the show interesting, to the point of being boring. It doesn't help that there are entire arcs of the show that move at a snail's pace, with episodes of buildup leading to each confrontation. Rather than creating suspense, it loses it. Plus, the villains are forgettable and their motives can be far-fetched. The entire third season is just building up to the final battle, where tons of new characters are shoved into the st…

In many ways this is your usual shonen story: a plain, unremarkable guy suddenly gets involved in an extraordinary situation when his life is disrupted by a girl that has fallen from the sky (not exactly but I hope you get my point). And yet there's something very special about this series and the way it deals with the emotional issues affecting their main characters. It was just adorable to see Shana struggle with the conflicting emotions she was having. They also were a sign of just how young she truly was despite the great responsibility she bore. I think that emotional struggle is something all of us can relate to from our younger years. On other accounts the anime is very weak. The enemies "schemes" were usually very nonsensical and a very sad excuse for action. I couldn't take any o…

This anime gives me strange feeling. I can't say I I really enjoy the show. If there is one thing I have really enjoyed the most, it's Shana's voice actress. She sounds so cute and lovely that it was the only reason why it kept me watching the show. But story itself just lacked the kind of development and flow that makes one keep watching. In fact, the story is rather dull. While I understand how it may be interesting to some, the fact that the story is based on one man's value due to what he holds inside just doesn't make it all that interesting. They've done their best to protect the man because he is extremely useful. But that's about it. Usefulness, whether in wit or analytic skills, the flow of the story is at times vacuous, filled with half fillers and slice of life, while other fil…
