Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale

Introduction

In 2026, four years after the infamous Sword Art Online incident, a revolutionary new form of technology has emerged: the Augma, a device that utilizes an Augmented Reality system. Unlike the Virtual Reality of the NerveGear and the Amusphere, it is perfectly safe and allows players to use it while they are conscious, creating an instant hit on the market. The most popular application for the Augma is the game Ordinal Scale, which immerses players in a fantasy role-playing game with player rankings and rewards. Following the new craze, Kirito's friends dive into the game, and despite his reservations about the system, Kirito eventually joins them. While at first it appears to be just fun and games, they soon find out that the game is not all that it seems... [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale, a better sequel to SAO than the whole season 2 itself. The movie is similar to the SAO arc in season 1, same feels but instead of the world being virtual, it's real life. Keep in mind, it's SAO so don't expect great characters or a good plot, but do expect those good fight scenes and animation. Surprisingly, the way they try to give more character to Asuna and the way they try to do drama in the series is pretty nice. That's just it. 6/10 Here's my breakdown in detail: Story 5.5/10: The story is decent. The concept isn't bad. Think of the story as Pokémon GO but SAO with an idol. A group of characters plan a bad thing for their own goal. Kirito is there to save the day. Speaking of him, they tried to make him weak in the beginning (will talk further in t…

This movie is absolutely worth the watch! Has much of the magic of the seasons. The movie has a HIGH production value. The effort into making this movie really showed how much they have improved. It was breathtaking. Plot of the movie was awesome. Does a good job at recalling the past seasons of SAO. The movie was a 2-hour long emotional trip and was fun. The characters were as fun as ever, and how they interact with things and each other was good and unique. Music was sweet. Animation kicked ass. Art was good. The whole plot was a uniqe one.

This movie is absolutely worth the watch! Movie has a REALLY HIGH production value, the thing that left me in awe was the level of SFX (sound) and VFX (visual). The effort into making this movie really showed the level SAO has reached so far. And they showed it quite well in the first 15 minutes of the movie, absolutely stunned by it. Plot of the movie is quite an interesting one, not going to spoil but it has recallings of the old SAO times and it kidna revolves around that. Which was interesting, to say atleast. Anyways, if you're reading this, before or after the movie, I'm sure you won't think less. P.S. Shinon my beloved, keep being the best character, we love you 🙏🙏🙏💙💚

I was surprised a few minutes into watching this—there was a scene that looked like it was from the anime 'Wagnaria' or 'WWW Working.' Or maybe it's just me and I'm imagining things, lol. The animation quality and character design are absolutely stunning and a feast for the eyes. The sound effects are incredibly realistic and lifelike. The details of the trees, streets, and lighting are just as realistic and futuristic. I really feel like there's been an improvement here compared to seasons one and two. The timeline seems to be about three years after the full dive (nerve gear) was released and one year after the SAO tragedy was resolved. It's been four years since the main character met the heroine. In this movie, Kirito is 18 and Asuna is 19 (just my guess), so yeah, they're old enough…

Art - 9/10 : Great animation all through-ought, The more modern character models looks even better than the original, Action looks crazy in the best way, and some more um mature scenes you could say in this movie. Characters - 8/10 : Actually some crazy growth in the characters here, Kirito is still an egotist but it shows his flaws, and actually shows his weaker side, and Asuna is still getting more growth, but is becoming a pretty great character aswell, The side characters comprise of the previous 2 seasons and add some more lighthearted comentary in the pretty damn dark movie, Villains have some strange motives but are better than the previous villains. Story - 8/10 Alot better story wise than either of the previous seasons, Its a far Far darker story and doesnt back down to talking…

I know a lot of anime movies dont have anything to do with the anime itself and a lot arent even cannon, but this movie is so fucking boring and lame i genenly had to watch it 3 times because i kept falling asleep, and even when I finally finished it I was so confused, it had literally ZERO correlation to the show, most anime movies that dont have anything to do with the original anime at least make sense, but at the end all i could think was “so why did they add this new headset bullshit just for this movie???” The only good thing to come out of this movies creation is the music, absolute bangers and i still listen to them sometimes.

Unlike Sword Art Online: Extra Edition which was made mostly just to do a recap of Season 1 before Season 2 was released, Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale has a full fledged story that brings the concept of the Augma to the Sword Art Online universe. What's also interesting is that Ordinal Scale is an original anime interquel taking place in between Mother's Rosario and Alicization. The manga adaptation of it came later. The Augma is a special device that projects a game layer in the user's area of vision while still being in reality. In other words, it's a middle ground between the real world and the virtual reality. It became popular very quickly. The most popular game the Augma came with is called Ordinal Scale, a combat based game where events are held in public spaces where…

Clearly the lesson of this movie is don’t play anymore Pokémon Go. Having watched the first two seasons of SAO, I did enjoy the franchise somewhat, although there’s a bunch of stuff that I don’t care about. Because of this I didn’t have much high hopes for this movie. Ordinal Scale was surprisingly a blast. The animation was the key to this anime. Each boss battle was such a feast for the eyes. It’s not just the fight animation that was awesome, even the death animation was cool to watch. Some CGI monsters were kinda problematic, but the ones at the beginning and the last boss looked amazing. This was a significant step up compared to the first two seasons. It vastly improved the enjoyment of the movie. The story itself wasn’t the best, but it was decent enough to warrant investment. Th…

Ordinal Scale is a Sword art Online movie that takes place after the second season of the anime and 4 years after the start of SAO. It requires watching the first two seasons to understand everything that happens. The story is about a new technology that brings virtual worlds into the real world, meaning people can see virtual objects in real life. Overall the story isn't amazing. The plot isn't solid, there's holes and many conveniences that make the story play out. This doesn't mean however that it isn't interesting or fun to watch. You aren't told about everything that's happening which creates an air of mystery and genuinely keeps you interested in what's happening on the screen. Over time you learn with the characters what's happening working towards a solid ending for the movie. Th…

I only simped for Asuna back in season 1, and ever since she's been a bathroom quickie, nothing more, nothing less but in this movie, the batty's crazy! Jokes aside I actually started to like Asuna, and that's saying a lot since a majority of the females in Sao put me to sleep. I love the whole ordinal scale game thing idea. The character design (outfit) for the game was really something. I prefer it more than the fuckboi black coat outfit that he wore in season 1 and so on. Oh, and this version of Asuna can get it any time anywhere!! ;) Oh, did I forget to say the BATTY WAS CRAZY!! (this version of Asuna had me moving different)

This movie had great production quality but that's about the only positive thing that can be said about it. I disliked how the motivations of the 'bad guys' are not revealed until the final battle, it was just weird and didn't add anything. There was nowhere to direct tension of any sort because the audience was in the dark about what the whole struggle was over in the first place. The 'threat' was also pretty contrived, it doesn't make much sense that he would have to permanently steal everyone's memories; why not just copy them? It's clear that aspect was extremely artificially amped up in an attempt to make the stakes higher. This is the same problem with Eiji's treatment; Shigemura had blatantly lied to him and throws Eiji under the bus to make him look more evil or whatever. And m…

Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale This movie is a mixed bag; fans of the series to this point will enjoy this. If you hate the series, avoid this. People who think the series is just average, may have a good time if they enjoy action and solid art. Characters - 5/10 The unoriginal characters are written at the same level as their anime counterparts. Kirito and Asuna are given the most attention, and the others are on the sidelines (because their arc is over). The main two aren’t give much growth either, but they do go through a challenge that is unique to the series up to this point. Animation & Art - 6/10 There is a slight improvement to both the animation and art from the rest of the series, but it doesn’t seem to really change the overall impact of the presentation. This movie is just…

*vague and mild spoilers for Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale* Things aren't always as they seem. Back when Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale first made the rounds back in 2017, it was lauded as a massive improvement over the first two seasons. Sure, SAO II received some of said treatment for the first couple of weeks and Alicization would eventually be given this reception almost wholesale, but this film is the first time it stuck. Then again, there is a subsect of viewers who consider this the worst major entry to date. Even many who praise the film's improvements won't come out and say it's good, given the franchise it's a part of. A lot of the “improvements” seem rather basic, which does paint a damning picture of the franchise. Kirito is a consistently active protagonist this time…ju…

Sword Art Online, fairly, has come with a ton of controversy over the years. After a fantastic first season featuring Aincrad and ALfheim Online, ratings dropped, at least on MAL, during the seasons in which the arcs for all of Extra, GGO, Excalibur and Mother's Rosario aired. The producers continually put out content and give it a crack in a movie featuring a new type of gaming - Ordinal Scale. As per usual, I'll assume you've seen the previously mentioned arcs for the purposes of this review. Story & Characters: Taken three years after the events of Aincrad, the brand new "thing" launches in Japan, known as Ordinal Scale. Instead of being a virtual reality like it's predecessors before it, Ordinal Scale is run on an Augmented Reality engine. This means that instead of lying down and wat…

SAO is what I would call the anime equivalent of a Michael Bay movie. It's expensive, dumb, and for some reason insanely popular. I have often wondered why people watch such stupid stuff and still manage to enjoy it so much. And it made me realise that I've been thinking about movies entirely the wrong way. What makes a movie/anime good? Is it a good plot? is it good characters? Is it good animation/overall quality? Is it a good score? Overall, I think these are all good, desirable things. But at its core, what makes a piece of media good is if it is enjoyable. SAO is enjoyable. Sure it's dumb. Sure it's stupid. Sure the characters are underwritten. But there is something satisfying about watching Kirito's incel power fantasy. It's still fun to watch him effortlessly beat up enemies and…

Sword Art Online Movie: Ordinal Scale -------------------------------- Story - 8 The Augma itself is an interesting concept. My only concern is that they have already used the same plot twice: a new device comes out, people die, Kirito investigates why. Nevertheless, everything else worked very well. Art - 9 Whether you enjoyed the anime or not, I think we can all agree the art is superb for its genre. In the fighting scenes, however, I would've liked to see more detail. Fortunately, this was added in the later seasons. Spectacular animation. Sound - 7 Near the end of the movie, Kirito and the gang are in a boss fight. The music that was playing was the old music from the first season of Sword Art Online. While the music was nice, I expected something more exciting to conclude the fight…

After this bad Season 2, I didn't expect much from the new movie. But this movie brought back a bit of the feeling that was there in SAO S1. Here is my review and a little explanation: WHAT IS THE AUGMA AND ORDINAL SCALE? The Augma is a new VR device that allows you to experience virtual reality in real life. You wear it on your head or face like a pair of glasses, just like the other VR devices we know from SAO. When you use the Augma, or explore the so-called AR, you are awake and moving in reality, as well as in virtual reality at the same time. Battles are fought in certain places, where you then dive into the AR and move in real life, but see a completely different world. If you activate the augma at a location where no battle is being fought, you see real life and you can find ite…

for the movie after the 2nd season the season that was hated by some people this is outstanding the coloring and animation was extremely live like and when nice, the story and concept was unique to me, ordinal scale is one of the best anime movies ive ever seen. its impressive seeing how good the movie was specially how the 2nd season kinda flopped, the animation was so clean and i can tell the artist really tried hard, and the best part is that the animation of the show passed to the next season which was amazing and stunning how they do such great animation in short time, the story is nice and i love the villian (eiji) of the show how his motives are good to his sense but to others its bad. shows how selfish the villian is that he would do anything just so he can save the person he loves…

Well, Hi there! If you are reading this you found one of my spoiler free reviews! It's where I try to give you more or less an idea of what to expect, so that it would be easier for you, the watcher, to decide whether or not it's worth your while! So without any further ado, LET'S BEGIN! First, I will give some context about my position in this, before I decided to watch the movie and even doing this review. I usually try to take the neutral ground in reviews (otherwise it wouldn't be much of a review, now would it) and in this case it was the same. After the second season I felt like I was in a meh position, because of some of the flaws it had and I actually even took a brake from SAO, because I felt like it's going to be the same deal as with the second season where half was meh and the…

I watched this when it first came out in cinemas subbed and man, i was hoping this movie would change my perception of SAO after the tragedy that was season 2 and it only made it worse. Kirito stays pretty much the same bland character he is throughout the film. The fight scenes and sound design is somewhat decent. Everything went downhill towards the end as Kirito magically unlocks Excalibur through the code and one shots the big final boss of SAO. It throws away ltierally everything S1 built as surely the big final boss of the game would be incredibly challenging but nope, just a typical Kirito one shot.
