the premise of this anime is something that i would've appreciated quite a lot and wouldve related to which is why i decided to pick it up in the first place. it's about an awkward teenage girl and her struggles with social situations. She's the type of geek who seeks out a purpose to life and that purpose is being popular in school. but the anime executes almost everything terribly, and the weakest point is pacing
Watamote is really repetitive, which causes it to be boring. the charm stayed for the first four episodes because it's what you would expect for an introduction of who she is and her goal. it stops being funny when it stops being new, because it's no longer spontaneous and it's actually extremely awkward to look at. the "slow burn" of Tomoko going through social interactions fe…

I have mixed feelings about this anime.
The story focuses on an extremely introverted girl who can't even talk properly with people except few of them including her family members. The character, Tomoko, is shown as someone who genuinely wants attention of people, but can't get it. Sometimes, it's the situation that she creates herself, sometimes it's genuinely fault of people around her. There are many instances where it seems that her classmates are completely clueless of her presence, and are ignorant. I mean, how can that possibly happen? Like nobody in her class bothers to talk with her, to know her. And her family too, don't they care too about her? Like, don't they notice her being in her room all day. not socializing with anyone, no friends visiting her? It's sad to watch this.

I always find myself coming back to this one.
"Watamote: No Matter how I Look at it, it's You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular!" is a relatable, slice-of-life/misery series about a young teen girl named Tomoko, who struggles with social awkwardness and is constantly putting herself in situations to be noticed by people. She is desperate for attention and acceptance from others, which is the part that makes the show so special to me. It's for those kids who always felt overlooked by their peers.
It's uncomfortable sometimes, it's depressing sometimes, and Tomoko can be seen as gross or creepy sometimes, but it is a genuine depiction of what being socially outcast is like.
I love this show.

Another cringe comedy, at first episode I was ready to love it, because of its main character(Tomoko), who seemed to be a caricature of the anti-social and awkward tendencies in us all, the solid writing, the great art, the AMAZINGLY delightful ending song(and other great music in later episodes) and steller voice acting performance by the lead VA. But it suffered greatly from its lack of character development and episodic nature and just threw away most of its potential to turn into a memorable story. Everyone was hooked on Tomoko, and they were ready to watch her bloom into the beautiful flower she was inside(TM), but she never did, and you mostly just realize she is deluded and most of her problems stem from within her self, which make you hate her, and yourself. In the end, it was simp…

This anime may be conflicting for many viewers: the main character is relatable to extremely socially awkward people, but the show's tone is inconsistent.
This is a character-driven slice-of-life cringe comedy. It focuses almost entirely on Tomoko, an extremely socially awkward girl navigating her school, family, and daily life. There is no worldbuilding or plot development. I found the character dynamics between Tomoko and her brother Tomoki to be funny, they resemble grounded sibling dynamics as they frequently annoy eachother. However, there is sexual fanservice through camera framing, jiggle physics and the main character's perverted thoughts and dialogue. Some perverted humor includes incest related tension, which may be uncomfortable for some viewers, though there is no direct roman…

You might like Watamote, or you might not. Either way, it is designed to make you reflect on yourself as a person. It is a mirror that laughs in your face.
Watamote felt like an interrogation. It made me sink into my flaws as a person, and I barely realized this was fictional. I relate to her social rejections as I was deemed a weirdo two times, once by a friend group in elementary school that knew me for over 5 years and the other was this year (2026) [that one really hurt me]. There were moments where I almost wanted to cry because I'm not far off from how much of a loser she is. Tomoko is the embodiment of my flaws, my deepest regrets, and hesitation to try.
I want to feel bad for Tomoko, but it's clear that she is an asshole. If I did the same things Tomoko did to Tomoki onto my irl…

this show is awkward. painful. oddly funny.
It's a straightforward setup: tomoko wants to be popular and she's not. what distinguishes it are the relentless ways the show refuses to buck tomoko's misfortunes. there's no change in moving towards coolness, no "turning around" or curveballs tomoko simply faces relentless social tragedy and maximum second hand mortification.
the art is great. it is very expressive, and slightly uncertain at times, and really captures tomoko's train of thought. the reader is supposed to feel cringe at some of the actions that tomoko performs/ thinks.
i do feel like tomoko makes a huge presence in the overall scope of this anime and despite how frustrating she was, she still somehow manage to seem a little bit human under all the craziness. i do like how the v…

I had dropped it but decided to give it a chance... I regretted it!
First, I must say that this anime gave me the impression of being a comedy for teenagers with a more realistic touch; I also believe the focus is on women in that age range. Based on my previous comment, I affirm something: this anime is not for an audience like me. Even so, if that were all, my rating would be higher, yes, I will detail it below.
The premise was already something that didn't captivate me, and the narrative development also doesn't seem very attractive. However, I only disliked what I saw, but keeping that in mind, along with the fact that the story seems to have no evolution whatsoever, ended up making me disgusted with the story.
The animation is nothing special, neither good nor bad. I think the only…

Honestly, I started watching Watamote expecting it to be one of those morally and legally questionable anime, but what I found instead was a cringe-comedy series that plays a lot with its direction and loves referencing classic anime from the 2000s.
It is one of those works where there is clearly the protagonist and everyone else, as everything is entirely centered around Kuroki. The entire narrative and humor are driven by her perspective and social struggles.
If you enjoy this type of awkward, second-hand embarrassment humor and do not mind occasional questionable situations, I think this anime is a solid recommendation.

This anime is weird. But i had a lot of fun watching it, I'm kind of sad I'm finishing it because it's that anime I've been watching once in a while for months just to laugh, it's no masterpiece but i rated it an 8 because i liked it way more than i expected
Everything about it is weird, and i feel weird that i relate to the mc (sometimes) Its objective IS being a hard watch, it's pretty realistic most of the times, the animation is good, the jokes are funny (sometimes) and it genuinely made me smile in some parts
It depends on your taste and personality but I liked it
Also the op and ed are peak.

SHE IS LITGIT SO REALLL... she is just shy but obv she has a lot in her mind and is iffy when trying to come up with ways for ppl to notice her..
The art style is soooo good ligit one of my favs the soundtrack of the opening was so funny bc of how out there it was. I think if you like dating sims and are always in ur room 24/7 or just a nerd this one will suit you a lot lol.
I think im more ao her beatie but i also have that side of her so i tend to just jump back in forth sighhhh.
I would say some parts are odd but at times i just look past it and enjoy it as is since this was made a few years ago they do touch on other themes and even sad themes which i like in an anime without too much in trying to be all the time sad.

A true love story to the introverts, socially awkward, and at times delusional people we have been or even met. Very good style of comedy that also makes you laugh at yourself if you ever been in similar situations.
The MC is a misunderstood girl who craves for the healthy attention and normal high school life, but lacks all the social skills to make it work. She goes through many situations in which the reality and fantasy never intersect. The misunderstandings make for many hilarious moments, but also a sense of pity for the MC.
Her daily life is filled with a sense of wonder, even if she’s just at home figuring out how to become popular. I couldn’t stop watching her moments of despair and dread, with a hope that she would rise again and think of a new plan.
Very entertaining with ma…

Watamote is one of the most brutal animes out there.
It's not of being scary, violent, or having horror elements, or being stresful - it is, in purest way, death of an innocent.
My review comes from a mind and experience that is apparently unlike most others'. Watamote was recommended to me heavily due to how 'funny' and 'comedic' it is. Anybody who thinks Watamote is funny or perhaps finds Tomoko a funny heroine is exactly what makes Tomoko a shut-in, isolated from society and scared to her bones from any social interactions - she is, most absolutely, not to be mocked.
I lost all comedy around episode 4, without spoilers, her incapacity and inability to handle a conversation becomes so brutal to her she gets on the verge of crying her eyes out. This is tragedy, it is more saddening tha…

*Brief Review-Reflections*
~~
WataMote defines an era of anime where meta and satire rule social media anime pages and blog posts and where protagonists deviate from the agreeability scale, self-aware of their own insufferable character archetype. This one's gimmick is told through the LN-styled title (and I was shocked the source material is a manga, not an LN) of being unpopular and blaming others for one's misfortune and paralyzing sloth, something the socially inept may truly connect with. I, for one, as part of the gang, perhaps have lost my affinity to overt role plays of the said issue done in the early 2010s characteristic presentation; not much lasting relishing of fourth-wall breaks, seamless OP transitions, ED variations and whatnots of an insufferable and depressed (INFP 4w5…

Watamote is a dark slice of life cringe show? Its about a girl who desperately wants to be popular, the methods she does to even grab a nanosecond of attention REALLY seems desperate, creepy, or just duff. Quite the pervy disaster at it. She's into that computer and anime boys like! I hope she's relatable! But uh, no, she isnt. Hopefully, There's plenty of uncomfortable scenes, especially episode 4. As a concept Watamote is actually unique, the actual show itself? Much to be desired. But I really resonated with this anime when I was 14 so to an extent I have somewhat of a softspot for it.

Watamote is an anime that tackles the POV of someone unpopular and honestly mentally ill. It tackles the mannerisms, behaviors, and thought processes of someone trying to be well liked but also scared of direct interaction and is frankly a bit of a loser. This leads to some interesting, quite relatable situations if you are that kind of person. It does it more effectively and honestly than others like it I see, like say Bocchi the Rock. Don't expect a happy go lucky story on this one.
The thing about Watamote though is if you are an empathetic person, you want to see the main character Kuroko develop through and improve and at leas get a tiny bit better but this doesn't entirely happen. There are some powerful moments, ones where Kuroko does develop confidence to try something and change…

this anime was silly in a good way, it's a good anime to watch if you were a weird kid in high school. You'll remember how embarrassing you were and how trivial your problems were compared to now as an adult. My priority now is to have a stable job, but for high school kids, their main priority is to be popular or at the very least a normal person. Watching this anime gave me that sense of nostalgia, about how things were much simpler back then.
The one thing I didn't really like is how Tomoko was sometimes an ass to her brother or mom, but weren't we all?
Overall good anime to watch if you were a weird kid in high school and are in the mood to remember simpler times

WataMote is one of the biggest surprises for me and I regret I did not watch it ten years ago when it came out.
If you've been watching anime for any period of time, you have probably already heard about it. Our main character, Tomoko, had since long become a meme and a caricature of a female shut-in with her baggy eyes and disheveled hair that had never felt the touch of a brush. She plays otome games, she listens to Yandere BF ASMR, she fights with her family and she does not have any friends at school. "She's just like me" is what you're expected to think.
What makes WataMote truly great is how gruesomely real it is. While the show frames itself as a lighthearted SOL comedy with many references to SOL titans such as Haruhi and K-On, in most cases Tomoko's blunders make you pity her, r…

I never laughed when watching Nichijew, I cried (in boredom) watching Azumanga Do'h, I watched Daily lives of High School Boys stone faced as the minutes of my NEET life faded away watching unfunny shit. But Watamote changed that, this is the first anime I've genuinely ever found funny, this is the first anime in existance to do Japanese humour well. This anime will literally change your life.
Then again I want this anime to remain obscure and not be tainted by pleb shits who watch 0IQ unfunny stuff like Dandandan or like Vinland Saga...hey if you liked Vinland Saga don't watch Watamote, it's not for you, infact it really sucks11!!11 Go back to your wannabe seinen shounen crap Vikings my ass they never existed and Vinland (and in extension Northwestern Europe) does not exist.

Every now and again, I'm reminded of WataMote, and it's difficult to parse my own memories of being a socially anxious teenager at the time I watched it from my feelings on the show itself. WataMote perfectly captures the combination of embarrassment, slight trauma and the twinge of endearment a lot of people associate with that period in their life
In a sense it's the perfect anti-slice of life series, that loves to play with the tropes of the genre, acknowledging the escapism viewers usually come to this type of show for, and reflecting them in the actions and desires of Tomoko. She's an intensely fun main character and watching her navigate popular scenarios for slice of life shows with her misplaced sense of superiority, social awkwardness and depravity.
For the most part it succeeds…
