Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night

Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night

Introduction

Mahiru Kouzuki, a skilled artist, gives up on her passion after her elementary school classmates ridicule her colorful jellyfish mural. Several years later, upon encountering an unexpected admirer in Kano Yamanouchi—a former idol with a troubled past—Mahiru decides to pursue her childhood dreams once more. Tasked with designing the mascot for Kano's new music project, JELEE, Mahiru enlists the help of her childhood friend and professional streamer Kiui Watase to make JELEE's first music video. Together with Kim Anouk Mei Takanashi, a pianist and fan of Kano's work as an idol, the girls aim to turn JELEE into a global hit. However, if they want to succeed in this ambitious endeavor, they will first have to free themselves from the shackles of their pasts. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I really loved this anime, the art was beautiful and the story was so fun. Honestly, the only reason I watched it was because I was trying to watch Princess Jellyfish and mixed it up with this (ᵕ•᷄ ᴗ•᷅ ), but I'm really glad I did ! What I really loved was that there wasn't a single major character that was a man, not one! Everything is so male centered, it's nice watching something without having to see a man. I loved the genderqueer representation from Kiui and the (very obvious) romance between Kano and Yoru !! Fav character 100% has to be Mei, she's so cute. The only thing I hated was the fan service in episode 7... like why?! We were going so well with little to no fan service and then we have this bomb dropped on us... it was just so weird. I hate the perverted character trope s…

i watched this when it came out and i just remembered it as i was going about my day, and remembered that i rated a lot of these things when i was a teenager who liked anything id get served holy shit this is the definition of rushed piece of media, feels like they had the first 8-9 episodes paced like they planned and quickly got told they need to cover the entire arc they planned to have span an entire nother season into the last 3 episodes also i know its not meant to be realistic but the amount of coincidences that "end up" happening, the amount of stars that align during the show to let these things happen, make me feel so disrespected when watching it

This is the only anime I've truly fallen in love with because of its characters, story, animation, setting, and message, which is why I also consider it my all-time favorite anime. Story 9/10 Jellyfish's story is simple but incredibly well-executed, with each line of dialogue compelling us to learn more about the protagonists' stories and their world. It touches on themes like self-acceptance, fighting for your dreams, insecurity, and high expectations. Characters 9/10 Mahiru, Kano, Mei, and Kiui all have incredible development throughout the series. Some are better than others, but in the end, they all achieve something in their lives or aspire to be professionals in their passions. Secondary characters like Miiko and her daughter Ariel, who also have equally good development, are gre…

Alright, I suck at writing reviews, but I’ll try my best. I love this show and everything it does. It feels a bit rushed towards the end and I feel like some things are left too open, but in the end, I loved every second of this show from start to finish. The characters were very well done in almost every way, with only a few characters I felt weren’t utilized to the fullest. The animation was stunning, the soundtrack was obviously great and I think the writing got a little worse after the halfway mark, and even worse after the episode 9 mark, it never got to the point of me being mad at anything it did, just a little underwhelmed. But with all these minor complaints came a story that genuinely made me happier than any other story has in a while. It has some small flaws here and there, a…

I love the "cute girls doing cute things" kind of trope as long as it doesn't fall into extreme cringe and if the vibes are good. "Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night" does this really really good for the first half. The VA really delivers, the art is great and the group coming together feels so uplifting it just feels good and is extremely enjoyable. Halfway through pacing starts to crack a bit. We have some side characters out of nowhere that we didn't feel the need for take the spotlight, as well as some forced drama about some of the girls' past that is just, plainly said, badly written, and the resolution is kinda meh. But still, there's few parts that shine and the show keeps going, and as i was saying i'm happy to give a lot of way as long as the vibes are there. Unfortunately the…

I binged "Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night" in just two days, and it was a fun experience. It features a straightforward yet compelling narrative from beginning to end. Unlike many series that follow a “rise to the top” arc, this one is distinctly character‑driven rather than plot‑driven. Each character is well-developed, complete with genuine flaws and personal struggles. Instead of forcing them to “overcome” their weaknesses, the story emphasizes the importance of accepting them and continuing forward—a powerful message, especially in a society that often demands turning every weakness into a strength, and views vulnerability as unacceptable in adulthood. What I found most impressive was the constantly changing ending sequence. It’s rare for productions to invest the extra effort in t…

For about three quarters of the story, Jellyfish is an interesting mix of CGDCT and serious topics, with each protagonist having a difficult past, ranging from insecurites to actual trauma. Although the tone remains mostly light and uplifting, it grounds the story and gives it depth. Unfortunately, episode 9 destroys everything the story tried to build. One of the character behaves horribly toward another… selfishness, egotism, borderline cruelty, take your pick. It could have led to an interesting redemption arc, except that the story decides that the other character—hence, the victim—is at fault. From there on, all characters are twisted to adapt to this new logic and nothing makes sense any more, until a happy ending that doesn't flow naturally from the story's premise. Either the sce…

I'm confused. Everyone is saying this was a great anime that fell apart in the last 3 episodes. That is absolutely NOT what I think. The final three episodes are the only half-way decent part of this show. The first 8.5 episodes were just an absolute nothing burger. They left me with absolutely nothing to latch on to and made me feel numb more than anything. It's not that there was something wrong with it. Try as I might I couldn't find anything to fault it for. It does everything right, but nothing well. I guess you could fault it for some inappropriate fan-service and yuri-bait, but I don't really care that much about those issues. If there's one thing I heard a lot about the start of this show, it the "potential". People had high hopes for this series and I think that's what carried…

I can't understand how they blew it all up.UUA An anime with good animation, a good premise, good characters, but they managed to ruin everything. A story forcibly pushed toward a fake happy ending. Meaningless character development. Everything is resolved in an awkward way, going to frustrate what happened before. It is not a tender ending or a pleasant ending. it is just a fake ending. I do not recommend it. After the first 6 episodes it is just torture to see how it goes on. I gave 5 as a rating and not 4 or 3 just because the animations are really good. But the story would deserve a lower grade. Too bad. Good potential totally wasted.

When looking at the listings before the Spring season this year got underway, this entry likely went beneath the radar of many, especially with many powerhouses like Demon Slayer, MHA, Tensura, Mushoku Tensei, and the galactically-anticipated third season of Konosuba also on tap for the season. Seasonal watchers like myself who don't mind digging amongst the weeds find comfy homes with these types of titles, an original anime from a proven studio and staff with an intriguing VA listing that somehow received little to no hype coming in whatsoever, but I digress. The music genre has enjoyed a resurgence these past few years, and this entry seeks to capitalize. Some will recognize Yuki Yaku, the original creator of this series, as the original creator of the Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki nov…

I loved watching this anime, the story is so simple, yet speaks volumes in and of itself. It is just a simple dream split between four friends to make music and improve their skills, and how their formation of JELLE impacts those around them. Everything from the visuals to the music, to the storytelling was phenomenally done, and I hope that there is more content of these four friends, even if it seems like there might not be now. This anime also managed to touch on some darker themes as well, especially with one character, who was a former idol was treated both in their idol days and by their own family. Another thing I really appreciated was the show's overall message: just be who you know you are, and don't be afraid to let yourself (and your gifts) shine, even if people think you're…

I'm not big on reviews and especially not fond of cute girls doing cute things even shojos are a stretch (i still think old school shojos did it best) but for whatever reasons this series found a way to conquer my heart. I can't speak about the quality of said characters or whatnot not even if the story was satifying at the end but for me it made me care about this group of four girls. They are kind of lost kind of not and just need the right people to be able to realize their worth. They tear each other from time to time but that's how they always find a way back to each other that i find very endearing. People who truly know you tends to be able to inflict the most sanity damages but being this vulnurable that you can create true bonds between people. Also the art feels very warm and inv…

Easily the best Anime Of The Season (Spring 2024) Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night is INCREDIBLE. Its an Anime Original that hits harder than your asian moms slipper flying across the country. The Characters is without a doubt its strongest selling point, each member of JEELE brings something new to the table, different background, personalities and its just awe inspiring and I've never felt this sensation since Hanasaku Iroha, Silver Spoon and A Place Further Than The Universe. Each episode fills you up with its positivity along with its contagious vibe and speaking of vibe next is the Music. Music is one of its strongest points and its one of the reason why I got hooked, episode 1 showcases it along with its character Kano and Mahiru. The ART is simple yet visually striking, the art s…

YoruKura is an anime that was incredibly close to being a solid recommendable show. Sadly, the final few episodes felt messy and ended up detracting from all of the good themes and ideas it was building up along the way. This was a result of failing to utilise its characters effectively, sidelining positive plotlines and pointless pandering. The art and animation quality is the one positive thing which remained throughout this anime, with a unique style. However, the music is subpar for an anime that is meant to be partially about music, and none of the songs particularly stand out as memorable. In most cases, this would not count as a negative, but given that music is a big focus in YoruKura, viewers should expect to at least have one or two songs that resonate with them for the show to…

"The reason Yamanouchi Kano sings! See, I want to be a reason for people to keep looking forward. For the fans who support me... No, not just them. Anyone lost about what they really love, And anyone who struggles every day, and hates the world. And even the ones who used to make fun of me, just everyone! I want them to feel happy, that life's fun, and just the best! That life's worth living until the next gig" - Yamanouchi Kano. Jellyfish can't swim in the night is one of those anime I wish that were given more time to explore their ideas. A standard season of 25 episodes will benefit it so much because it's one of the most relatable show I've ever seen. An anime for the social outcast, for those who are lost in life, for the broken-hearted and for me... I personally love watching Idol…

After watching two Bang Dream anime and being completely put off by everything about the early episodes of Girls Band Cry and drop it, I tried my luck with the actual title of the girls band/idol-ish subgenre I wanted to watch, which is this. As expected, it is the only one I enjoyed and the only one I thought it was overall decent and worth a watch, but still only so barely. Despite grouping it into that subgenre, the truth is that the girls here do not actually form a band, but more like an artistic group where just one of the girls writes and sings. The others add illustrations, compose the music and make arrangements, and do the video editing and organize the events they take part of, stuff like that. So it is not an anime just about the musical part of a band, but about the whole art…

What a precious anime. How good it is to see anime like Yorukura. Firstly, this is an anime that brings a lightness right from its first moments. It's clear that it will be a pleasant experience, but it also seemed to be unpretentious, which it certainly wasn't. Yorukura brings into debate very current and important moments and reflections for today's world. Several times I caught myself thinking while watching this anime about my decisions, my future, my regrets and my past. It was an incredible feat for this anime that addresses these themes without losing its charisma. Charisma that oozes from all the characters. They are all extremely charismatic, especially those from the main cast. The episodes pass in a pleasant way, there are few dull moments and it is generally humorous or excit…

Anime originals have been hitting hard recently and I watched this a enjoyed the aired episodes of this one while half expecting the ending or latter half to be fumbled as some other popular anime originals, but Oh was I wrong. Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai which literally translates to Jellyfish cannot swim in the Night is a new girls band anime that flew under my radar in the new anime season which was until Mother's Basement's recommendation video came in. I was immediately intrigued and went ahead and watched the episodes that had aired thus far and needless to say it did not disappoint. The show follows a young artist who stopped making art when she realized that her friends didn't really vibe with her art, and lives her daily life putting on a social mask of sorts to blend in with frien…

4 girls finding each other and helping each other get over the each individual's struggles with life by having a common goal and being together. While this sounds like the power of friendship, that's because this is the power of friendship (quite a bit). The story in short is about an ex-idol that wants to sing again, an artist that lost her love for art, a huge fan of that said ex-idol that was very influenced in a positive manner by that idol when she was active and a reclusive that is a vtuber. The story isn't hard to grasp, they each meet trough certain circumstances (perfect circumstances sometimes), and they set the goal of becoming a band and work together towards that. While doing so, they each encounter problems that they had in their pasts and get over them somehow. Saying mor…

I really liked this anime, especially in the first 10ish episodes. It was strong in it's story, the characters got me so invested, and I will not lie and say I didn't tear up at certain scenes. As an artist online it hit so close to home and was very beautiful. I wish it had more than 12 episodes to work with. The last big arc felt so rushed, I wish there was more time to let the characters breathe, with a few more episodes the writers could have done so much more. This is one of those anime that I watch anime for. Though I see it's flaws, I can't take this anime and say that is anything short of breathtaking.
