When it comes to an anime that stars tomboy characters getting their own happy love story, even if it's a form of a plate of knuckle sandwiches, Tomo-chan is a Girl is the show that I love to come back to. Since its release back in 2023, it is all fun and games with this show. In both Japanese and English. Watched it again for the second time a couple of years ago as a review that I wrote on my YouTube channel, but couldn't find it to add into this account. So, I think it's fair enough that where I'm at today with how I write my reviews currently is considered perfect timing. This is like my third time watching this anime in both Japanese and English because I love this anime and it is considered one of my all-time favorites in a top six manner in 2023. Well, not perfect, it seems. I'll ex…

ery good, cute, and romantic anime about two childhood friends, a guy and a girl, whose relationship slowly starts to develop when the guy realizes that his so-called “friend” is actually a girl he has feelings for.
There are also plenty of funny episodes and situations that make it really entertaining to watch. I definitely recommend giving it a try!
The animation is great and gives the anime a very modern feel. Even the battles between the two feel like you're watching an actual action anime, which makes their interactions even more entertaining.
There are no weird or inappropriate scenes in this anime, so I would consider it perfectly safe and suitable for viewers of pretty much any age.

Such a fantastic romcom - had a blast watching this - loved all the characters especially the main character tomo - her outgoing nature mixed with how shy she is is a really great watch - not only that but she is strong affff - seeing her always defend her friends and kick ass left right and centre is a great watch - so dam wholesome and the challenge with tomos dad at the end and the confession and kiss and everything was so wholesome- love a romance that had the confession at the start and then shows the progression after even if technically that was the case in this show it was still really different and I loved the fact the MC had a tomboy nature and not just like your average romance protagonist- overall a great watch

This anime was enjoyable to watch. It was funny, the animation was good, and there were parts of the story I enjoyed. It’s definitely not something I see myself re-watching though.
I guess super Tomboy female MCs just aren’t really my thing. I also don’t really like it when a romance is centered around a man and woman who not only are not only in love with each other, but also love competing against each other, especially by means of violence. None of the characters were horrible, but again, I just don’t really like that the entire show revolved around the female MCs super Tomboy personality.
But yea, not necessarily a bad anime, just not really my cup of tea personally.

There's a bunch of likeminded anime in the slice-of-life, shojo subsects. One pretty similar is Lovely Complex. Girl trying to get guy's attention. It's different enough, with the tomboy angle. But, the road there is similar. I do love the main character. She's so fun and proactive. There's some cartoony violence to make it kinda unique in this genre too.
The core of the show is the relationship between Tomo and Jun. It has some depth to what could be overly simplistic. Honestly, this is the Achilles heel of any romance. It all hinges on whether or not you care. Everything else could be great, but if the romance is flat or uninteresting, it kills the whole thing. A surprise to most of these shojo, the ones I've been watching, is that they usually do have some depth to the romance. Having…

Tomo-chan Is a Girl! takes a classic romantic comedy premise and flips it into a surprisingly energetic and entertaining story about friendship, identity, and the awkward chaos of teenage feelings. At first glance, the setup seems simple: a girl likes a boy, but the boy completely fails to notice. The twist, however, is that the girl in question has spent most of life being treated like “one of the guys,” which turns a straightforward confession into a full-scale emotional obstacle course. The story centers on Tomo Aizawa, a lively and straightforward high school girl who finally gathers the courage to confess feelings to childhood friend Junichiro Kubota. The confession itself is bold and sincere, but Jun somehow processes the entire moment with the emotional awareness of a brick wall. Ye…

Different from the rest!
An anime that REALLY hooked me, perfect for just sitting back and enjoying each episode with care! All the characters are captivating and the theme, in my opinion, is very interesting lol. I like how the story unfolds and its rhythm and humor are amazing!
I just don’t give it a higher score because I think it still lacks a bit in some technical aspects, but when it comes to plot, characters, and humor, I found it wonderful. Highly recommend it.

Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko! 💗 (aka Pure Chaos Done Right)
This anime is proof that simple done right hits harder than drama done wrong.
Tomo is an absolute menace in the best way possible. A tomboy who’s strong, loud, honest, and trying her hardest to be seen as a girl by the one guy who treats her like his gym bro. And somehow, that struggle is both hilarious and weirdly relatable.
Jun isn’t dumb he’s just painfully dense in the most realistic way. He doesn’t ignore Tomo’s feelings out of malice. He just genuinely doesn’t know how to process the fact that the person he roughhouses with is also the person making his heart act up. It’s frustrating, but in a soft, human way.
And the little details? That’s where this anime shines.
Tomo trying to act “girly” and immediately short-circuiting.

First of all, the story gives a rather unusual impression from the very first episode. A girl wanting a guy to admire her as a woman is quite a unique premise. However, this originality keeps you engaged, as you naturally want to know what will happen next. Each episode shows clear development, giving the feeling that the anime is progressing smoothly, with events that are well-written and coherent.
The comedic aspect is also well executed, with many genuinely funny moments that bring a sense of joy and help break any potential boredom while watching. The characters are well designed, each with their own personality and perspective. You easily grow attached to them, as every character contributes meaningfully to the storyline.
As for the music and animation, they are simple yet fitting a…

This anime presents a decent enough premise alongside a gimmick . But that's all it does with the gimmick. Presents it as an what if.
This whole premise was only present in the flashbacks, since by the time the actual story of the show begins, dude's already aware Tomo's a girl. And while it made sense in the past, since she was still a kid and she acted that way, later on there's absolutely no possible way you can mistake her a for a dude. Of course one could make a case that the title also reflects Tomo's insecurities or something, but again, those are really far-fetched. The characters... aren't cardboards but they aren't that intresting either.
Now, this show is marketed as a Romance Comedy. It rather fails to deliver on both ends. The comedy is basically 90% physical violence or thre…

The anime that got me back into watching anime—especially romance. I absolutely loved it. Personally, I really enjoy stories where the girl falls in love first rather than the guy. Plus, Tomo is super charming, and I kind of have a thing for tomboys lol. This anime is just so enjoyable to watch, there’s really nothing to complain about. And the ending was perfect.
It’s a shame there won’t be another season since the entire manga has already been adapted, but sometimes that’s for the best—it keeps something that’s already perfect from being ruined. I just don’t give it a 10 out of 10 because I feel like something was missing, even if just a little.
Tomo’s mom 10/10.

Got back into the romance genre after some time of watching Isekai genres. Refreshing to say when watching tomo-chan plots. Even though it is a slice of life with romance involved added being tomo-chan being a tomboy which i am loving it with how it delve into the world of remaining best friends and in a relationship.
It opened my eyes to see that while yes the bonds one make as friend isn't what it used to be when the friendship was new but it doesn't mean it is ultimately nonexistent. Only it takes a new form of mash up (mix) between the two and allows the personality of the relationship to be there but much more cherished to around them. While yes there will be some ups and downs but that is where the friendship part comes in, both characters know their boundaries and have supports to…

A very fun series that explores traditional masculine and feminine qualities when it comes to relationships. What really sells this show is all the likable characters from our two main leads, but also most of the side characters. Everyone just has so much personality, and the show does a solid job of focusing on the characters and the high school setting is a lesser note which is nice in romance anime that sometimes puts an over emphasis on the setting. This shows really plays into that the main duo are childhood friends but now as early high school students they are starting to discover more about themselves and what type of relationships they want.
The comedy is very solid and the dichotomy between Toni’s rough nature and her sensitive cute side is very fun to flip back and forth. The…

I had the chance to start watching the rom-com anime Tomo-chan Is a Girl! early this year, probably between January and February, and as per usual, I am late with my review. 😆 The anime takes a very refreshing approach to romance, and includes comedy, some light-action karate fights, with several sincere moments thrown in for good measure. The story centers around Tomo Aizawa and Junichiro Kubota, whose friendship gradually evolves into that of lovers but with tons of hilariously misunderstood and awkward moments along the way.
Misuzu and Carol, while providing some support and fluff to the main duo, make the story much more fun and exciting to watch. The usual high school-kind-of-romance setting is given its own cool twist with tons of cliches; yet when one looks at it from an Indian pe…

(This review is all over the place but i tried my best to mention the key details of the anime)
Tomo-chan is a girl is an anime centered around a Tomboy who wants to be more girlish
This anime is a very unique one despite the topic, Tomo chan is a girl is a very Typical rom com following the traditional formula of introduction and then the beach episodes sick episodes etc. So it's very basic so there isn't anything over the top apart from the tomboy theme of the anime. The plot is decent but very basic and repetitive at times. The plot is more so focused on the comedy rather than the romance for the majority of the anime so it's more so a comedy including romance rather than a romance including comedy if that makes sense so Don't go in expecting something like horimiya.
The animation…

I, as many, wasn't especially drawn to this series. I was consuming any romcom I'd come across that had at least decent reviews, but the description and art wasn't captivating for me. But I was hungry, and just starting dipping my toes into this anime thing. Oh my, I'm so glad I did. I'll be choosing some words to define my favorite aspects of this anime:
Natural!
The story flows. The characters react to one another. Nothing is too extravagant, no personality is over the top, they're teenagers learning how to deal with their feelings and new situations. They all care for each other. They make mistakes, yet they're able to reflect on them.
Friends!
Tomo and her friend group, Misuzu and Carol, talk about their problems and how they, feel all of the time. They're always clear, they care abo…

Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko, Tomo is a Girl!, is nothing really special.
The overall story is pretty generic and common. I’d consider the romance to be a slow burn, some people like that and some don’t. What I will commend this anime for, is clearly depicting characters realising their feelings. Watching this anime will allow you to truly witness what it means to go from best friends to lovers.
This also features two great side characters, with their own stories and feelings that are actually a lot deeper than you would think.
The voice actors did a very good job in this anime too.
Although this review list labeled as “mixed feelings”, it leans more towards “recommended”.
Overall, yes, the story is basic and it is a slow burn which might throw some of you off. However, I still think this…

I'm 100% convinced Rie Takahashi took this role solely so she can try doing her best Makoto Kikuchi impression. Also HOLY COW, RIE! I knew you had range, but I didn't realize just how much!
The show started out a little slow and the jokes didn't really land at first, but I found myself enjoying this one more and more as time went on. The supporting cast is EXCELLENT in this show! I'd say I even like them more than the two leads. Carol is best girl, don't @ me. So many short slice of life shows like this will often have very forgettable supporting cast members, so it's always a treat when a show pops up that you're actively looking forward to seeing every single character on screen. From their signature comedic bits to their own personal development. It wasn't anything mind-blowing, but it…

This anime sneaked up on me and stole my heart, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
First off, the characters - oh man, the characters! Tomo-chan, Jun, Misuzu, and of course, Carole (my personal favorite!)... each one is so beautifully crafted, it's like they're real people. I loved how the side characters weren't just, well, side characters. They had their own stories, struggles, and quirks that made them just as important as the main duo.
Carole, though... _sigh_... she's just the sweetest thing! I swear, when she cried (you know the scene I'm talking about), I felt my heart shatter into a million pieces. But, oh, the happiness I felt when she got her own happy ending! It was like I was right there with her, grinning from ear to ear.
The last episode was the perfect cherry on top. It wra…

This show has a very interesting and yet realistic premise: a girl (Tomo) who fits the tomboy role, yet struggles with her femininity amongst being in love with her childhood friend (Jun) who reciprocates those feelings. It kicks off very well, displaying the bond between the two friends as an ultimate strength; in a quite literal sense since they have been learning martial arts together since they were kids and are now the strongest fighters in their town at high school age.
However, this premise soon backfires, and is executed poorly. Because Tomo and Jun are already such good companions, there is little room for progress until an actual confession is made. All that is heard for the majority is "wow I like him/her because of [insert character trait]" yet no action is taken to capitalize…
